It must have been a lonely and sad time for Jason... Seen him many times walking behind the pack and avoiding.. Hope he has a better, calmer life now.. Miss your music Jason.. Always
Lars asks James if he doesn't play half of the solo like he used to, James says no, Lars asks him if he's shy, James gets annoyed and says he can play the solo, Jason says it's not a fast solo, James is now pissed lol, Kirk says oh a split solo that would be cool haha Kirk the diffuser always.
Kirk learning police defusing tactics to survive in the band.
There's just something fascinating about this video, and I revisit it every once in awhile. It's like being a fly on the wall during the last glimpses we see of Metallica with Jason where they're not on stage. The tense rehearsal, James throwing that bottle across the room, you could just tell everyone was fed up being in Metallica. It's basically a preview of what's to come months later in Some Kind of Monster.
Totally agree
Something happened between 1999 and 2000, cos there was huge tension growing as you can see here. I think a lot has to do with James addictions, he was definitely grumpy, and that was the feeling you get every time you see 'tallica performing in 2000. Echobrain was just another excuse James had to disrespect Jason one last time, and I'm glad he finally stood up.
Totally agree with you !
That's correct..!
@sluana1 I know, that was a douche move.
“Jason was FIRED for shitting on some dude for $5, as well as his usual annoying coattail riding faggotry.”
That's the most plausible I've read somebody speculating about this.
If I had a dollar for every pixel in this video... I would have a dime!
Man, I can feel James’s anger permeating through my screen. That shit was real! You get the impression that the rest of the band was more cohesive with each other and they had to tip toe around James who was obviously raging at this point!
You can see the tension and the build up that is about to lead to some kind of monster.
Jeez!! I love Jason's bass tone.
Yeahh a real gorgeous punshy sound 🤘
Lars still had a good drum kit, James the drunk asshole, Jason the metalhead rocker, Kirk the "I'm still going to try" Hammett. Yeah, this is 2000 for sure.
Rob is fucking better than all of that shit

Today, 20 years ago Jason left the band
Exactlly !! Excellent memorys !
Yesterday he did an interview mentioning how he can't play Metallica stuff anymore as his physicality just isn't there after his surgeries. We're now past the time of a return
I hoped he would be there for some of s&m2 he did say there was interesting stuff brewing with Metallica a year before that
@@jord9261 he mean that he cant do it in his brutal style but if he performs like metallica today he can do it
@@ozzystation Of course, he could be part of Metallica to this very day! It's just another excuse for him to not think about Metallica, so he says he doesn't fit anymore.
sorry but it's not exactly true... he fockin' left the band!
it's nice to see how happy they are all now
This is actually late December 1999. Rehearsing for the M2K tour
If this was in any doubt, there's a christmas tree in the room
I was at the December 28th 1999 show in Miami. I was right up front, no one in front of me. Nice to see this footage.
Is it me or when Jason tried to say something about the riff, Lars instantly made a gesture and Jason discretely moved away?
yeahh i was thinking the same, but it's not clear :/
Charlie_33 because of the quality I can’t see what gesture Lars made.
At what time stamp?

Thinking about the fact that this tension-derespect-lost communication-lost of connection happen in families inside houses. It’s an hard way to live
I hope they cry looking back on this. Such a wasted line up
It's amazing to see this. You can just see how miserable they all are and compare it to now. James has fought demons his whole life but seems to do it in a much healthier way these days.
Yeah it only took him 30 years better late then never I suppose
I'm pretty sure this video is from December of 99/January 00 and it's rehearsals for the M2K brief mini tour they did. The big clue is they play Phantom Lord and are seen jamming on 2x4 and that's the only time I can ever recall those two songs being played together on the same tour. Also it's before I Disappear came out so it's cool to hear them jamming on it before it was released.
Yeah and notice the Christmas tree. December 1999 most definitely.
This is rehearsal for the new years Eve 99 show in Detroit
0:23 Hetfield on the Jäger! lol
He fucking left the band I love u jason
3:16 that throw was fucking intensive, he deffo did not have any anger issues at the time❤
3:07 is it me or does Jason saying something here cause a reaction from lars and James. Jason immediately turning away seemingly annoyed then James launching a bottle in anger.
Yikes
Looks like he's pissed off with Lars... Lars says "You don't play half the solo like you used to"
Lars then says "What's going on, shy? Shy?"
James says "I can play the solo"
Lars says "Well you used to play the second..."
Jason chimes in "[inaudible] fast or something..."
Lars "Oh split the solo?"
James throws bottle
Lars "That'd be even pretty cooler"
@@bedford4383 i think Jason said "is that even fast?", that might have got james since he was playing slower or worse, probably probably because of the addiction. I think you may have understood what happened, james wanted to play the solo, he wanted the others acceptance, then jason cuts that energy james had by diminishing what he wanted to play. Or maybe it was because of lars, im not sure
He seemed annoyed with Jason's comment because he said "isn't that like really fast?" insinuating he may not be able to keep up, then he immediately looks down with an "oh shit, probably not a good time" kind of reaction, then James throws the bottle across the room. At least that's how I always took it; might be totally wrong, cuz the sound isn't great and there was a lot of cross-talk.
If they listen to the whole conversation it is clear that James is starting to get angry with Lars. Since Lars ironically told him if he was "shy" to play the solo. (James expression says it all and then I say "I can play solo" ) Jason's comment is currently inaudible, but I think it's in favor of James (maybe Jason is referring to me playing the solo fast, improvising a solo "faster and something" uses those words That anger of James is clearly with Lars.
James is tipping that beer up!!!
This place would be revamped into HQ.
Jason's the best 'tallica bassist
But yet James says, "other arrangements can be made" absolutely shittiest thing to say...
Jason newsted made a lot of people listen to Metallica he is better than Metallica ever was
Wait, hold on! I like Jason, but let's not exaggerate, the "magic" in Metallica comes from James
The reason behind me followin’ them, and the same reason why I don’t follow’em anymore
Wait what lmfao
True. Jason and James was the best duo ever.
Agree, i started listen Metallica when i saw Jason singing Wiplash
I like, only, Jason.
I thought it was outtakes from them jamming in the studio for classical albums.. Jason according to that dvd the classic albums thing was few weeks before he left.... But James haircut looks like they did playing there last song with Jason outside then he quit the band in early 2001 Jan I believe...but like I said figure out the classic albums thing and he's jamming there with thrm in the studio 2001 it's like he quit the day after

3:44 what’s that guitar riff from?
I think is just a jam riff, with few note of "Sanatorium"

If U think about it, it doesn't exactly look like the absolute worst period in 'Tallica's history...
He's still getting paid from metallica
i really hope
teemmiee temeee He gets publishing royalties
So he should be
From my understanding via reddit. He still get paid from albums he done. Example Black album, he gets paid on that whilst Rob does not!
@@ibrahimsmasood Why should Rob get paid for it, he wasn't there
The tension here wow, something happened in 2000 because Metallica were pretty awful people to be around back then even if you take away the Napster stuff.
i definitely think the Napster stuff had a lot do with it. maybe they were somewhat regretful of the situation since the entire controversy turned a lot of people against them. just that alone probably rubbed a lot of them differently and wasn’t something that was needed on their conscience at all times. also, music was just one of their responsibilities. im pretty sure all of them were married and had kids aside from Jason, and while I’ve never had kids or been married, I’ve heard how stressful that can be for some people. 1999-2001 was just a super rocky and inconvenient time for the band. so many variables, problems, and egos all clashing together. happy it’s better now.
As a Metallica fan I must say they weren't the greatest people, they never went to rehab or anything to deal with their problems so it ended up showing itself in this way and then after Jason leaving is when they started to changed as people
4:56 they should play "2X4"!!!
Yep 🙌
3:16 what did he throw?
good question ! personally i don't know.

From the time period where Metallica mostly played songs from their shitty albums and Jason usually had to insist to get them to play anything from Kill or Ride. Now they play those songs terribly and in the wrong tuning to "accomodate James voice."
Totally agree with you !
Considering they have been playing those songs in the erong tuning since long before Jason left...
Also Kill and Ride are the shitty albums
@@ESPHetfield Obviously I blatantly disagree. Kill, Ride, and Master are literally landmark metal/thrash albums. They did a lot to define an entire genre. Even Justice heavily influenced a lot of death metal bands with it's commitment to uncommon time signatures and overly complex song structure.
During this period they mostly played songs from the black album, Load, and Reload. Opinions on the black album aside Load and Reload are a poor mans attempt at making Alice In Chains albums. They're god awful.
