- This is rare Metallica performance of "Orion" with Jason Newsted.
It was a Metallica concert in 1993 in Basel city (or Bâle), Switzerland. Видеоклипы
I see a lot of people hating on the fact that Jason uses a pick in this song, you’re forgetting that Jason physically cannot use a pick because of injuries to his fingertips, just like Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath had difficulty playing in standard tuning because of his injured fingers, Jason is doing the best with his limitations.
Green Teletubby I see you just watched his EMG video.
Chuck shulder yeah I watched it last week I think, even though he is making the best with his injuries this definitely isn’t his best performance
Well Metallica isn't a beginner band either. Look how effortless James and Kirk are. Jason is definitely the weak link. The band was weaker with him. Rob gives them a much higher ceiling with talent and sound. Watch both play the intro to for whom the bell tolls and if you think Jason belonged on stage with Hetfield and Kirk you're insane
@@chriscrocker6783 you're delusional lmao
@@user-uc7ui8lx9f you mean on point? Who was Jason Newsted without Metallica. Nobody. His net worth and popularity have dropped and his stint with Ozzy was super short lived. Remember Echo Brain, the band that got sued for being so original they stole ideas. You want to know why you never saw Orion or anesthesia? James and Lars didn't trust him to play it because it was over his talent level. These guys give interviews you know.
1:30, I'm sure Kirk is thinking about Cliff and the bet he lost that night that saved his life. Such a beautiful song.
Watch his pick hand closely in the beginning ... You can -clearly- see him saying "There are more notes there"
because Jason refused to play this song, it was Cliff's song, and he revered that. and to all those wondering where to find a great quality version of this (the only one I know of) look up Jason Newsted bass solo 1992. the concert was San Diego I think. Enjoy.
No. ... They refused to let him play it because he butchered it. ... ... Notice how Bob gets to play "Anesthesia" ... Cliff -brought that- to Metallica. It's a Bass Solo, if Anything is "Cliff's" it's Anesthesia (personally, I don't think Bob -should- play it). ... Bob kills Cliff's notes. ... Jason butchers them!!
@@ChurchNietzsche Bob who? Oh you mean ROB? What a joke.
@@Kruegernator123Bob Rock
@ChurchNietzsche how do you know Jason butchered it? He didn't play it with Metallica at all (and Rob shouldn't either, because it's Cliff's song not Jason's or Rob's)
Jason couldn't play the song. Don't get it twisted
Amazing... I thought that Jason has never performed Orion. Thanx for the video!
The band never played Orion live until 2005.
They hate him because he replaced Cliff. I personally think Jason is awesome. It still pisses me off when I hear ...And Justice for All that James and Lars made the bass inaudible. If you listen to it with enhanced bass, it sounds awesome.
PLUS, he's a phenomenal singer, and his voice complimented James's perfectly. That Creeping Death.... wow. James even sounds better now in those concerts they do with Jason.
Jason also uses a pick and he strums a lot harder than your average bass player. Robert has a great sounding bass because he played a lot of flamenco when he was younger, so he has a very natural strum style with his fingers just like Cliff did. We can keep going on how Cliff was better than every other bass player in Metallica, but truth be known Cliff would have enjoyed Roberts and Jason's style of playing because he would have been honored for someone to play his music.
i agree! cliff was the coolest dude out there, along with dimebag and so many others
Why do they never play the first half? The bass feature right before this section is awesome.
I love this bass tone
That’s the alembics straight D.I signal, it didn’t like sound that at the concerts
@@ionehkontehdiabo7627 can you elaborate in layman’s terms please?
@@AbstractMan23 you are hearing the super banjo like sound straight from the pickups and the output jack of the bass. It’s not an amplified sound. It’s sterile and gross sounding. Also I don’t know what Layman’s terms means I’m a little slow
that solo kirk drops at Call... it's so cool, it fits right into it
thats just great!!! 3 instrumental songs played in one nigth!! the rock!!
I don't understand why people hate Newsted. He made a great job with Metallica.I am sure that if James and Lars had talked Jason wonders during those fourteen years, people would love him.
He is a great bass player, and Metallica look heavier on stage with Jason.
This is gold, man. Thanks for sharing! Unbelievable.... simply perfect.
i love the harmony kirk and james do!
I have to be honest. Life was going well. Then I found out this existed. Now life is going better!!
I love this song sooooo much.
@minusjason i know the whole crowd mics part but now i know that. thanks dude!
AWESOME DUDE!!!!!!!
@Lavourrin thanks!!! now i can learn how to play that part..
absolutley beautiful , I heard an audio of this years back , but it was chopped up between to live is to die and call of ktulu , so I thought it was fake , nice to finally hear the whole thing , even tho it is many years later lol. they played trapped under ice last time I saw them :)
I totally agree. By the way, I've got a quick question: there is no video of Cliff playing this live? How about just audio?
It was not played live in Cliff's time to my knowledge
@@MoreCazador Correct. Orion in its entirety was played live for the first time live on November 13, 2005 in San Francisco.
james' guitar is so cool..that fret board design is savage
Kirk with Ibanez??? Wth??? Unbelievable 😁
I was about to comment on that too lol
lisen to it in 93.
it rocks
I would love Metallica if they were with Jason again. We was just the greatest Bassist they ever had :3
@bogdankirk It's written ESP on James' guitar. On Kirk's it's Ibanez.
supreme!!!!
Stop fucking hating on jason he is great at picking and this song was written for finger style he has his own style although i use both finger and pick i cant play this song with pick
AWESOME
this video and audio is not a fake,is 100% original.
lol, you had me laughing on the floor there :D
Jason, best bassist ever
Many people say this performance sucks, but in my opinion I think it's great.
Jason could play it the way he likes... pick or no pick.
Say what you want about Jason but if you can’t feel the sadness and the soul in this performance then you’re just wrong. Jason did phenomenal work with cliffs legacy no matter what anyone says. Just forget about load and reload...
awesome the call of ktulu
@TheAerosmith3 This is recorded directly from the sound board, where all the different signals go to be mixed by the engineer or whoever is doing it. When you see a live video and there are crowd sounds, it's because there are mics for the crowd. If those mics aren't there, you just hear the musicians, and it ends up sounding kind of dry without any crowd or studio trickery.
amen!
Fucking beautiful video! Thank you!
3:26 if that shit doesn't make you wanna play live i don't know what will
somebody tell me please, why Jason cut off his hair?
jason newsted sos el mejor, aguante jason yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhh
He is awesome bassist
love jason newsted..
Hahaha, thankyou... i dont know why people hate on Jason so much! It makes no sense to me
Clearly a real video, listen to the drum sounds in particular, trademark Ulrich during that era.
Also, Newsted did play with a pick.
Great performance!!!
Ok, you're right, they did perform it, shame is it wasn't the full song and it isn't on the audio version, that's what I was hoping for. (N)
@Twirree yes absolutely true.
james fretboard is fucking badass, coolest i've ever seen
@xrobwx Thank you for those kind words.
i finally figured that version of orion on bass
Jason Newsted FUCKIN ROCKS!
Holy shit! What Kirk is doing from about 3:00 to the end of that video is a f...ing masterpiece! These were the great times of Metallica!!
@FireBoa1 Yeah, Kirk is playing Ibanez. It's Ibanez RG470 and as far as I know, it's the only Ibanez he payed on.
@LamerH You are absolutely right
For anyone doubting the authenticity of this video, it's real.
The sound is a straight mix from the board, hence no crowd noise.
I have this concert on video, and the whold video sounds this way.
Occasionally you can hear crowd bleed through from the mics.
The crowd isn't "mixed out", it was just never recorded. It's a sound board recording of the band only, which means only the stuff coming in through instrument feeds or open mics would be on the recording. Since this is an instrumental medley, there aren't any open mics onstage to pick up any crowd noise.
@MrFreemusicplayer
I agree!!!! he is the best!
this is epic
@MASOMAN1AC they played the orion bit all the time, but this is the only time that i know about where they played to live is to die and call of ktulu
This is fucking amazing hell yeah dude
freaking awesome, that's all I can say!
Jason Rocks !
That makes sense then!
Jason Newsted is the best
@V3rs10n1 Tape. Constant palm muting can rub the hand raw, so he uses that to help.
I'm trying to find a full version with Jason
there isn't
wow kirks solo in this one is amazinggg!
I HAVE THIS DVD
That is one badass of wolf and man ESP.
Yeah. Jason came into the Band, and they got fucking famous!
I love this Lars!
DAMN it´s a fucking awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
exactly...
i lik the harmonies
GRANDE JASON!
Jason Newsted, Metallica if they touched the metal, he was the spirit and the heart of the band, i like metallica but today they lack that spark they had when was jason
Jason was more like a cheerleader of the band. The heart, soul, and spirit is James Hetfield.
They have low testosterone because they are old now
Xavi Storm What they lack is Cliff Burtons Psycho energy. Maybe you're too young to have seen him live. NOT even close.
@@davidtrevino5211Cliff was a stoner. He was probably the most laid back out of all of them. Jason was a raging inferno on stage.
Totally awesome!!! But what is that white thing on Kirks hand?
@kagazmazter wait are you talking about the scoth tape well if you are, he uses it so he wont get bruises on his hand or bleed from palm muting so much on his guitar
please tell me where's i can download this fuckin' great full video, thanks everybody....
So I just checked through the Bass Solos track on my Binge and Purge albums, and I'm afraid I didn't hear a single bit from Orion. Maybe on the DVD it shows it, but as for the audio version. Doesn't exist.
jason is the best
@bigGaza1 :P
I only read cliffs biography since i am a bassist myself and i was interestet. All i know comes from there. And when learning a bass track like this i like to know how it came to live since that is always helpful for writing new stuff.
OMG!! I see Mr. Kirk Hammet playing Ibanez for the first time!!
i want the bass solo that come first....
this is a part of the san diego tour back in 92 i think, i have it in vhs somewhere
@SoWahtPeple just this video... he really is very good. you could hear him well normally
That was the only Instrumentaly Medly in all Metallica years...
You can read on the Metallica website...
@necrosatanico Actually they were playing in Basel, I think.
Man, that's cliffs wolf ring around James neck and his kill skull ring on James finger. Is the plague ring on lars' neck or with Kirk?
@1980Molle no its not cause there is just the amp sound what you can hear ;) this was in the 90s^^
Kirk on fire! much better solo than the studio vers tbh
@MrKoreankid17 Look, I wish he was still in Metallica too, but what can we do?
@metallica10028 Yes, that is true.
HOLYSHT KIRK WITH AN RG
Jason does NOT suck. He's a great bass player and so was Cliff. They're both legends. :/ Leave Jason alone already.
@LamerH absolutely right m8
jason rules
JASON.....
@jonyr90 The orion live in korea is played in a different key from this one. It's lowered a half step compared to this one, which is in standard E-tuning. You obviously don't have a "good ear," mistaking this for the Korea performance.
@EnRaGeDxSuB Cliff was never used 5 string basses. It's sounds differen because Jason playing it in his own way.
Fuck i love Jame's guitar neck motives!
