Well, the LT1 cars back in 1993 (I had one of those too) would smack the car in this video around. Everybody knows the GTs were never speed freaks. I just wanted to show in this video that a GT can pick up power from bolt ons...despite people saying that bolt ons are a waste of time.
Straight forward video. It's nice to finally see one on a New Edge GT, from a mature person. Most SN95 videos are made by people under the age of 22, and they just rip on the car for being old, slow and made of plastic. Those were respectable numbers! About 20HP more than I thought. Nice ride! Enjoy.
I was always amazed my 03 GT ran as well as it did for the lack of power...it was consistent at 13.50s with only exhaust and tune...I decided in 2006 to get a 04 Cobra ! I've had it since and its the best money I've ever spent lol ...no power issues there lol
Bro very respectable power for that gen 4.6 i have a marquis with same mods (intake, exhaust, pulleys, etc) making 242 to the wheels. Mine has the stock 3.55 gears if i recall correctly. Love that people still have 04 and under GT's those were my favorite car wen i was younger and yours looks very clean inside and out.
Great video, I have been wondering what gains these mods make and am glad to see someone verify it besides the videos from the parts stores like LMR or AM. So why does everyone always trash these cars and imply they were bad or weak? As opposed to what? They had way more horse power and a bit more torque than any 1979-1993 5.0 GT/LX did stock for stock, and they even had more than the famed 1993 Cobra. When I got my 1999 GT there was nothing on the road for a similar price but a GM F body that could touch these GT's. I regularly smoked GM F bodies because of the traction issues they had with the 6 spd. when paired with an average driver from light to light. Hell consider BMW M3's had 240 HP back then and Corvettes only made 300+ as opposed the 500+ they make today.
Although these engines are fairly bulletproof, the reason they get so much flak is because of their heads. This isn't limited to just the 2v either. The 3 valve 4.6l in the 04 - 09 Mustangs and the 5.4 Triton in the 04 - 10 F150's also have pretty anemic heads. They don't flow as great a say a comparable ls1 or ls3 head stock for stock. Another issue is that at the time, there was simply no aftermarket head available. Sure you could have some made but they would have been extremely expensive and time consuming. Now Trick Flow makes a 2v head called the Twisted Wedge which is made specifically for 2v 4.6's from 1992 to 2004 and for the 5.4 Tritons up to 2014. They say they flow really well but I'm not really an expert on them. The caveat is that they are pretty expensive. The full top end kit (i.e. heads, valve train, gaskets, cams, gears, timing chain) depending on website goes anywhere from $2900 to $3599 shipped to your door. And depending on what supporting mods you have, you may make around 350whp to around 400whp. Most builders will basically upgrade the bottom end and this point and that too can be quite expensive. I've seen full bottom end forged kits go for like $1600 and if you really want to make peak N/A power a stroker kit is where its at. Again a bit expensive at around $2000. At this point you start to realize why some people choose to go the LS and LQ route. Parts are way less expensive and you much more available. Still there are quite a few 2v stangs kicking ass out there.
Very good points. I had a 1998 C5 Corvette LS1 350ci making 350 hp stock but look at the price of that Vette new ($45k) vs the Mustang GT new ($24k or so). It's really an apples and oranges comparison. Now look at the $40-$50k Mustangs and what they put out stock.
