    I started at the lowest federal government salary in 1976, just to get “onboard”. Over 32 years I went from $6,000 per year to $137,500 per year when I retired ten years ago. The best part is my retirement, which is the old CSRS law enforcement retirement. Those checks are the sweetest. Two best days were the day I was hired in 1976 and the day I retired in 2008😁 Everyday is Saturday except for Sunday now. And it never gets old

    Thanks Rachel, those were great Questions and answer’s. Thank you for taking the time to give us a better understanding of “A pilots life”. My son is a volunteer @ Charlotte Douglas International Airport. He enjoys teaching the Flight Simulator. He is 16 yrs. old and he knows without a doubt “A pilots life” is for him as well. He will certainly be going to aviation school soon. He is so excited to meet Captain Sullenberger and the entire crew and their families this Wednesday the 16th of January at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport. We love your videos so very much! Wishing you all the very best and safe happy adventures always.

    I found your advice for the middle schooler really interesting. I’m currently a senior in hs and I started flight training through a school program junior year. By the time I graduate I plan to have my PPL. Flying is the best part of my life! My schedule isn’t stressful at all. I take flying and ground school seriously but since I’m so in love with it, it doesn’t feel stressful or like a lot of work. It’s so enjoyable and has really made my teenage years better than they ever could’ve been!

    Getting a window into a young pilot's lifestyle is so rare, so thank you for sharing! I'll be starting my instrument training in a few weeks - can't wait. Best of luck to you !
    Also, question: how easy is it for you and Alex to match schedules and get time off together? Don't have to answer if its too personal - thanks!

    • @ReyVolare
      @ReyVolare  5 лет назад +3

      Thanks for the support! Good luck with the instrument rating. That's one of the tough ones just because it's a lot of new information. Alex and I are able to be with each other a lot and line our trips up pretty well. We usually bid for types of trips and/or lengths of trips and then if we want to create time together, then we post trips for others to pick up so we can then pick up trips and line things up. We've been very pleased with how we can make things work together.

    I got a degree in business and hated it and I became a photographer. I also got a degree in photography. I shoot editorial and advertising and have been doing it for over 35 years now. Made a good living and but at this point I have reached a burn out. I guess any career can do that. I always wanted to be an architect or a pilot too. I wonder if I would had liked those careers better? It is too late in my life to change things but I am glad I became a photographer because it was one of my passions. I only got a degree in business to satisfy what my parents wanted but I would recommend to any student is to follow your passion.

      I had once an unpleasant moment when I thought that I will lose the fuel pressure, because the fuel pressure indicator started to show readings between zero and normal. I switched the feed to another tank, but the indicator still showed unusual readings. However, the engine was running normally, but I returned back and landed. Later I heard that the failure was only in the fuel pressure indicator.

    Great Q & A and love your videos. My question for your next one is as follows, why do you not record your various flights or does your carrier not allow it? There are so many airline pilots doing this and awesome to see, mainly the larger planes. There are no regional small jets pilots doing this that I am aware of. Would love to see some of your routes that you fly.

    Hearing about your scheduling and the need for the airline to organize scheduling of its pilots and FAs to meet flight plans and the demands of the public reminds me that even if I had a trillion dollars, I'd never invest in an airline. Too many issues....the crude, rude public, unions, weather, fuel price volatility, FAA, government regulation, terrorism, etc., etc., etc.
    Has your airline's HR department or those in the airline with authority over you expressed any concern about your videos or blog?

      Sciencetobedone I am just going off the rule of thumb for calculating pay at OO. Which is where she is probably at. 7 years there, never had a line with less than 86 hrs or 1032 credit hours for the year. Then add in holiday pay, profit sharing and performance bonus, which made it a safe bet to add three zeros to your hourly rate to give a ballpark estimate of your yearly income. This rule didn’t work for my friend at EV.

    In your opinion, what determines if a flight is "desirable" or not?
    How much did all of your flight training cost you?
    With that industry relying so heavily on seniority, would it be worth it for a 40 year old to get into it? Right now, I'm a 1st year truck driver making 50k-55k
    Thanks for your time and effort to do these videos

    • @ReyVolare
      @ReyVolare  5 лет назад +1

      Not completely sure what your first question is referring to. My flight training cost roughly $80K all the way through to my CFI ratings. Seniority does make a ton of difference as you move on with the companies, but it wouldn't take long at all to get into the triple digits from my understanding. I say that if you want to fly and you really want to do it, then heck yes it's worth it to get into it. It's just up to you if that's what you want to do with your time and your money. Realistically, if you got your training done in 1-2 years, then built flight time for roughly 2 years, you could be at a regional airline in that amount of time and be making roughly $35K-$47K your first year, and it goes up from there. Upgrading to captain makes a huge difference in pay and you could do that after roughly 2 years at a regional.

    • @ReyVolare
      @ReyVolare  5 лет назад

      Are you referring to GA flying or hand-flying the E-175? I choose to hand fly the plane most every chance that I get. Sometimes it's smarter to utilize the autopilot so you can assist your co-pilot in monitoring the aircraft and accomplishing certain tasks, however I enjoy the challenge of hand flying with no autopilot when it's a safe option.

      Congratulations on starting your flight training! At this point (outside of this coronavirus) you do not need a degree to get hired at a regional airline, just the flight experience. You'll most likely still need it to move onto a major carrier.

  • @jayburrow7826
    @jayburrow7826 5 лет назад +1

    Is it true that your industry is going to experience a mass wave of pilot retirements? If that's the case, will that mean you'll be Captain faster? Will it be easier to be hired by the big carriers?

    • @captaindasbomb6862
      @captaindasbomb6862 5 лет назад

      There's no faster way of being a Captain. You still need a couple of thousand hours of flying. Legally minimum is 1500 but when you factor in seniority its more like 2500

    • @StevenJohnson737
      @StevenJohnson737 5 лет назад

      Yes it will mean faster upgrades with most regionals and faster transition to a major. Seniority used to be the limiting factor with upgrades. Now it’s hours with some regionals. 1000 hours of 121 or 135 time and you’ll go left seat. At my airline upgrade time used to be 6-8 years of seniority and now it’s the 1000 hours regardless or seniority. So probably a year to 2 years to upgrade depending on how much you are flying. If you already have the time you are qualified to go directly to the left seat as a new hire with some regionals. Legacy retirements peak in the next few years and will require larger classes to combat attrition

    If you move to the majors, say American, and you want to eventually fly the 787, do you start on the 787 or start on something else like the 737 or a320 and then move up to 787?

    • @joelbollinger5502

      And if you start on something else do you have to become a captain before changing to the 787?

      Usually, depending on the trip, you're gone for 3-4 days at a time. Sometimes more. Sometimes less. I dont think that's ideal circumstances to take care of an animal. If you live with someone then its different, but if you're on your own, its doubtful.

    Is it possible that you were able to get the holidays off because of low seniority and those holiday trips are more desired because they pay more??

      Usually the senior people bid to have the holidays off so the low seniority folk get assigned the trips during that time. It's common for people to go a couple years without the holidays off.

    Hey, sorry for the late question 😂, what would I/someone expect in training, and will I/someone still manage to be a pilot if physics in specific wasn't a subject taken in high school? This is kinda stressing me out because I didn't take physics, but the person that I spoke to at the flight school said that they'd teach everything at the school anyway, even if I don't take it, I'm just worried that I won't manage with the physics, is it really difficult?

    • @ReyVolare
      @ReyVolare  5 лет назад +2

      I don't think that you'll struggle because you didn't take physics. Much of the understanding of many things in flight school can be explained in a way that anyone can understand. A book I'd recommend if you do go down this path is the Everything Explained for the Professional Pilot. The author compiles information on each topic from multiple resources all into the book. He also does a fantastic job of simplifying information and "dumbing it down". He writes it in "English". It's one of my all time favorites!

    What books can I read to get ready for flight school.. I don't want to start as a novice!!

    • @ReyVolare
      @ReyVolare  5 лет назад +2

      Most people start as a novice so don't feel bad if you don't know something starting out. However, my favorite book outside of the FAA handbooks was the Everything Explained for the Professional Pilot. The author explains things in plain English and compiles information from every source into one section for each topic.

      You can also look at what the required texts are for flight school. My required text was the FAA airplane flying handbook 2016 edition.

    What airline do you fly for? I am in middle school and I want to be a pilot after high school and I also want to know what airline is the best in your opinion

    • @ReyVolare
      @ReyVolare  5 лет назад

      I won't be sharing what airline I work for. Nor will I be sharing my opinions on what the best airlines are. My advise for picking the airline you'd like to work for would be to narrow down your top 2-4 priorities that the airline can offer and go from there. That may involve location of pilot domiciles, aircraft, pay, flow-through programs, reputation, etc.

    I have always loved to travel and it is my dream to see the world. I would love to become a Pilot I think it would be so exciting. I have customer service experience and travel and tourism qualifications. I am nearly 30 and nearly broke. Going to travel school is going to cost $116,000 but could give me a future that i currently could only dream of. If you were me, what would you do? Sorry for the long message, Amanda

    • @ReyVolare
      @ReyVolare  5 лет назад

      Hi Amanda, sorry for the late reply. I think if flying is what you really want to pursue, then you just need to come up with a plan to make that happen! It shouldn't be impossible. At first glance it seems like you need to save up as much money as you can over some time and then apply for a student loan to cover flight school. Once flight school is done and you can get a job flying or instructing then it's just about building flight time and living frugally until you can get a job at an airline so you can bring in more money. You'll pay off the student loans for a while, but if it's all worth it then it sounds like something to consider! I hope this helps!

    You really didn’t answer the question lady.
    1) someone said how much you make, just roughly say a range you make like if you make 60,000 a years just say 50,000 - 70,000 so that you not actually saying what you make,
    2) process in what to become pilot, you can say for example ; you find a bank ( the name) , then you went to flight school, then you applied to airline after you got 1500 h or you have restricted time. Like answer like this, you generally just give answer that doesn’t answer the question.
