I live in Nashville. I was once at a restaurant and Jimmy Fortune was there. He is the lead high tenor you hear singing here. He also wrote this song. I said hi, and he actually walked over to my table to spend a few minutes to talk. Super guy!
Some other Statler greats ... Is it Your Place or Mine, Maple Street Memories, Silver Medals and Sweet Memories, My Music My Memories and You, Am I Crazy, The Best I Know How, Your Picture in the Paper, We Got Paid By Cash, Don't Forget Yourself, Tomorrow Never Comes, Holding On, and so many more. Love your Statker Reactions, i hope you'll do more from them soon. I love those guys. They gave me much joy growing up. I miss the them!!
I grew up with the Statler brother's Oakridge boys and and Alabama so these videos bring up so many childhood memories for me I absolutely loved hearing it thank you.
Jimmy Fortune has a new band called Brothers of the heart and it’s mostly a cover band but they are absolutely awesome! They’re also know by Fortune/Walker/Rogers/Isaacs. Amazing harmonies
They hit the jackpot when they found Jimmy Fortune. He replaced Lew Dewitt and he is a prolific songwriter as well as an amazing tenor. I'm so glad you finally did this song! It's one of my favorite Statler songs. My sister named her first baby girl Elizabeth after hearing this song. Thank you for reacting to this.
No he did not replace lew.ask him for yourself.lews talent speaks for itself Jimmy made his own place.both were perfect for the group.we mix them terribly
"Silver Medals and Sweet Memories" and "More Than A Name On The Wall" are two great songs. I highly urge you to react to those,. Also their Gospel songs are really good too.
The origin of the song is interesting. I'd heard they sand it for Elizabeth Taylor, but didn't realize it really was based on her- "Elizabeth" is the first song written by Jimmy Fortune, which he wrote soon after joining The Statler Brothers (Fortune had replaced Lew DeWitt, who departed the group in 1982 after a chronic illness). Fortune already had a tune in mind, and he was inspired to title the song "Elizabeth" after watching a film, Giant starring Elizabeth Taylor, before a show, and then met a young girl who introduced herself as Elizabeth in the audience during the show. The Statler Brothers would later perform the song for Elizabeth Taylor on her 52nd birthday.
I'm glad you did this song I wrote Jimmy who wrote this song to tell him thank you I had a second niece named Elizabeth she died in the womb the week she was to be born and this song reminds me of her Jimmy was so kind to write me back and told me that the same thing had happened in his family and that he was glad I loved the song this is my second fav song of theirs
Check out their "Silver Medals and Sweet Memories", "That Summer", "The Junkie's Prayer", "When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder", "Class of '57", "Some I Wrote", One Takes the Blame", More Than a Name on a Wall"...the list is endless. The bass, Harold Reid, passed away a few years ago.
"Elizabeth" was inspired by two people. Jimmy Fortune had been playing around with the tune for the the song for a while but didn't have a name picked out. One evening, before a show, he decided to watch a film to kill some time. The female lead in the movie was Elizabeth Taylor. He enjoyed her films and started wondering if "Elizabeth" would work. During the concert later that evening, a girl from the audience introduced herself and her name was Elizabeth. He thought it was too odd a coincidence, took it as a sign and went with "Elizabeth" as the title.
Taylor Elizabeth was the name of my middle niece who I never got to see grow up she died in the womb the week she was to be born Jimmie was so nice to write me back when I contacted him about how much I loved this song and why
The Statler Brothers, The Oak Ridge Boys and Alabama have some of the best harmonies, yet all three are distinctively different. The best and most powerful one of The Statler Brothers songs that I can think of right now would be More Than A Name On The Wall. It would be a great one to react to any day, perhaps even more so on Veterans Day or the day before(November 10th)which is the Marine Corp Birthday.
Audio only is how I remember the Statler Brothers - with my dad in his pickup. 😊 Thanks for the reaction. 💖🦋 "American Made" is one of my favorites. It's more upbeat 😊
This is my favorite group. They have so many great songs. I would like to recommend another group that I think you would really like. They are called Shenandoah. Two of their great songs are THE CHURCH ON THE CUMBERLAND ROAD and MAMA KNOWS.
I always loved the Statlers, that is probably one reason I love Home Free. Other great songs by Statlers: I'll Go To my Grave Lovin' You New Yourk City Class of 57 Do You Remember Me Bed of Roses Do You Know You Are My Sunshine More Than a Name On a Wall (Vietnam Wall tribute) Susan When She Tried Whatever Happened to Randolph Scott
Hello several people have mentioned that the song was written by Jimmy Fortune. He was the tenor that took Lew's place. Yet the picture here shows Lew instead of Jimmy. 😮
Statlers were great.Harold Reed the bass was marvelous, very funny guy. Yes you tube has almost ruined some songs with the videos that artist think has to go with them. Back in the day when you had pure sweet talent, not auto tune made better vocals, out of mediocre and bad singers.. They come from a gospel background.
The sound was different with Jimmy replacing Lew. It was smoother and a little more mainstream beautiful. Jimmy probably is a better singer but Lew gave the group a very distinctive sound. This is very pretty.
Yes. I listened to the Statler Brothers growing up in High School with my father. He is deceased now, but when I listen to The Statler Brothers, it reminds me of my late father. Thanks for playing this particular video.
The lead singer here is Jimmy Fortune. He has been singing with the Gaithers in his retirement years. He also has an album with 3 other guys that is amazing. Here is a link to their session together.....ruclips.net/video/NpQK6vzunsA/видео.html . Jimmy has quite a few albums out on his own as well.
This is one of my least-favorite Statlers songs, along with 'Too Much On My Heart. In the eighties, tenor Lew Dewitt had to retire from the group due to illness, and he was replaced with Jimmy Fortune; Jimmy was used to being a solo act, and I don't think his high tenor mixed well with the other three voices. I'd like you to react to a song or two by the original Statlers lineup, like 'I'll Go To My Grave Loving You,' or 'Bed of Rose's.'
Jimmy Fortune wrote this beautiful ballad and I do believe it was the Statler Bros second biggest hit after Flowers on the Wall. Jimmy sings with a group called Brotherly Love. His voice is just as beautiful as ever. If you want to hear the most beautiful song ever written listen to Brotherly Loves "Where No One Stands Alone" You dont have to react to it just listen to it.😊❤
Elizabeth is fictional. They were extremely great at creating characters. I think the name just fit the syllable count. I have the anthology that tells the story of the song. Also, their best songs never hit the charts. Vice, virtue, rich, and poor. The Statlers really captured the human condition in their music. There were two songs about prostitutes. "Charlotte's Web" and "Bed Of Roses." "Carried Away " is on The Short Stories album. Poignant and sad. But all carcters were given total respect.
Sadly, I cannot enjoy these types of videos when you keep hitting the pause button to talk about the song. Please let the Songs play all the way through, non stop, start to finish, then talk about the song at the end. And please don't try to say that you "have to hit the pause button to avoid copyright issues" because I know better. There are several other "Reaction" Videos to songs posted daily, and none of them hit the pause button every other word of the song to comment, and not a single one of them have any copyright issues due to allowing the Song to play all the way through, non stop, start to finish. They just hit the play button, let the song play all the way through, non stop, start to finish, then make their comments after the Song is completely finished. If they can do it, you can too.
I live in Nashville. I was once at a restaurant and Jimmy Fortune was there. He is the lead high tenor you hear singing here. He also wrote this song. I said hi, and he actually walked over to my table to spend a few minutes to talk. Super guy!
Listen to them all. They are all good.

Too much on my heart. Is another great song from the Statler Brothers
You should listen to “ more than a name on the wall” especially with Veterans Day coming up.

Take a look at "Bed of Roses" by the Statlers. I know you'll love it!
My favorite of theirs too, but they really don't have a bad one out there.
They hit the jackpot when they found Jimmy Fortune. He replaced Lew Dewitt and he is a prolific songwriter as well as an amazing tenor. I'm so glad you finally did this song! You can't ever go wrong with the Statler Brothers and the Oak Ridge Boys! Great harmonies!
Flowers on the wall will always b my favorite but u can't go wrong with anything they sing. The harmonies r unmatched. I love this group.
"Silver Medals and Sweet Memories" and "More Than A Name On The Wall" are two great songs. I highly urge you to react to those,. Also their Gospel songs are really good too.
One of my favorite song is I ego to my grave loving you❤
Do Flowers on the Wall, and Do You Know You are my Sunshine.

This song was a tribute to movie star Elizabeth Taylor
I love "Whatever Happened to Randolph Scott".

Of the ones you've seen & heard this is my favorite as well. But! You HAVE to listen to More Than A Name On The Wall! That one WILL be your favorite!
the ultimate "Barbershop Quartet"
"Elizabeth" was inspired by two people.

"Too Much on My Heart" is a beautiful song.

Not that country music isn't good but the oldies are what country music is about.
Jimmy Fortune wrote this song to Elizabeth Taylor….
I love Jimmy Fortune , who wrote this song. After The Statler Brothers disbanded, Jimmy went on to a solo career. I love listening to him sing.
