So, Which Quartet was best, Statler Brothers or Oak Ridge Boys? I really can't say. my favorite Statlers song is "Child of the 50s." You might give a couple of these Oak Ridge Boys songs a listen "I'm Setting Fancy Free," "American Made," "Leaving Louisiana In The Broad Day Light" or "Day Light."
The natural progression would lead you next to The Oak Ridge Boys, if it does please lead off with something other than “Elvira” preferably an older selection like “Y’all Come Back Saloon” or “Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight”.Enjoying the journey.
I'm from the Class of '76. Yeah, we had big hopes & dreams, but how many actually fulfilled them. These guys are so talented, just a pleasure to listen to.
Reading through the comments several people have recommended The Oak Ridge Boys. I must say you can't go wrong with them. If you like the Statler Brothers, which I can tell you do, I think you would enjoy them.
Harold Reid was the bass singer. He died not long ago. I know you love yourself some Home Free.. they did Flowers on the Wall to dedicate to him when he passed. And I agree with the others, you like the Statlers, the next stop would naturally be the Oaks. (Oakridge Boys)
Bass Harold Reid, God rest him, really did marry Brenda. The song mentions the people from his real "Class of 57" That's what I loved about these guys, real songs about real people. They are my all-time favorites!
Not too bad for a group of guys who took their name off a tis box. I love them. I am class of '69 but this song hits each of of our classes. Bass is Harold Reid Thanks for playing this. ❤❤❤❤❤

ok. you have listened to Statlers with Lew singing tenor. Now you need to listen to his replacement, Jimmy Fortune. Too Much On My Heart also written by Fortune from album Pardners In Ryhyme album. Elizabeth also written by Fortune supposedly inspired by Elizabeth Taylor from album Today. My Only Love also penned by Fortune from album Atlanta Blue.
I saw a video of Jimmy Fortune singing the song “Elizabeth” to actress Kami Cotler - Elizabeth Walton. Very sweet! No surprise that Jimmy is a big fan of the Virginia based show
Harold Reid's wife was actually named Brenda, he was the tailor who made the suits, and is the bass singer, also co wrote this song with his brother Don.

The Stats! I love it! More to check out - Vern Gosdin - "If You're Gonna Do Me Wrong, Do It Right" and "Do You Believe Me Know." Vern's voice is so moving and powerful. Gotta add one more - Johnny Paycheck. He's got a lot of good one's but listen to, "The Only Hell My Momma Ever Raised."
It's so relatable. Behind that person in a dull job or an unfortunate circumstance is a person who was young once, and who had so many hopes. I can't listen to this song very often, it makes me tearful.
Definitely not to divert from these guys, but if you think of delving into bluegrass, check out Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder doing Rawhide, it’s off the charts 😀
If you would like some newer country here’s some Billy Strings,Sierra Ferrell, Ian Noe, Tyler Childers, Sturgill Simpon and the Statler brothers are from Staunton VA in the Shenandoah Valley where I’m from I live about 40 minutes north from there…
Oh, yay, thank you for doing this, glad you enjoyed it. Love Harold, he is so funny. Every song they sing is my favorite. lol Lew DeWitt's voice blows me away., it is like a bell. After Lew died, he was replaced by Jimmy Fortune.
Statler Brothers had a long career. Loved their songs. They also had their own tv show in Nashville. In 1982 Lew Dewitt tenor singer left the band because of cancer. They hired Jimmy Fortune who sang for them until they retired in 2002. Jimmy Fortune still sings. Jimmy Fortune Hugh hit with the Stats was Elizabeth.
What a group to react to! The Statlers sound is so good! This reminds me of my parents(R.I.P) when I hear these songs. Love hearing these songs and artists that you don't hear much anymore. The older I get the more I appreciate these songs. I love how you research these artists as I learn also. Keep up the good work!
This song was written by the Reid Brothers. I do not know if these are the true facts of Harold's (the base singer) classmates, but he and his wife Brenda did graduate in '57.
