This was the Statlers first big hit. I love the Statler Brothers music so much, I play it on a regular basis! There have been many, many great hits after this one, and they also had a long running TV show. The bass singer is Harold Reid (on the left) and his cousin Don Reid is the lead singer. Two of my favorites are "I'll Go To My Grave Loving You" and "The Class of 57". The fellow on the right with the guitar is the high tenor with a rather unusual voice, but it worked like magic. When he passed away at a fairly young age, a young singer named Jimmy Fortune took his place and stayed with the brothers until their retirement a few years ago. Sadly, Harold died in 2020.
Don was his brother.
I was ten! I heard all kinds of things on Top 40,from the Statlers to Sinatra.
I always watched their show on TNN at my grandparents' house. Some of my best memories 😢
The happiest most upbeat song about crippling depression ever! 😆
Definitely danced around to this! As a young lady I got to see them in concert with Johnny Cash! It was so fun and they got several of us young ladies on stage dancing with them!
This song was featured in Pulp Fiction in a scene with Bruce Willis. One year later, Bruce said that he was “smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo” in Die Hard with a Vengeance.
Harold Reid the gentleman on the far left has the deep voice. He recently died due to the virus
The deep voice was Harold Reid. He recently passed away. There are many many other Statler Bros. Songs out there. Check them out.
Yes. He was the gentleman on the far left. What a voice
The Statler Brothers, The Oak Ridge Boys, Glen Campbell ... they and so many others were staples on American network TV in the 60s and 70s. Sadly, today's TV audience does not see this kind of talent, outside of the music 'competition' programs.
I remember listening to this in 1966 when I was little. I was 12 yrs old.
They opened for Johnny Cash for years! They wrote a song called “we got paid by cash”
I was dancing around the kitchen while doing the dishes! Mom and dad were big country music fans. They both played guitars and their friends played bass and piano. They played for all the local dances in the tiny towns where we lived in Washington state close to the border in the mountains. My dad was a logging truck driver back then. 👵🏼😎☮️❤️🙏🏼🌈
You would be hard pressed to find many Statler Brothers song that didn’t have great harmonies. Lew DeWitt, the original tenor, wrote this song and won the Statlers a Grammy for it
This was my favorite Statler Brothers favorite song.
I never danced around the room to their music, but every road trip or vacation we took in the 70's involved listening to my dad's favorite 8-track of Statler Bros greatest hits. I thought it was painful at the time, but the Statler Bros are a part of some of my best family memories and there are several songs by them that I love!
I was listening to this in my dorm room saying, 'Dang, that's my song!"
Grandparents? Hell no - it was me! 🙂 Still singing it now and then . . . you don't forget this song, especially the chorus!
Guilty as charged lol my Grandma loved this song
Home Free did a cover of this song dedicated to the late Harold Reid (Bass). Tim has a short statement afterwords if you listen to it. The Statler Brothers have had a major impact on groups like Home Free.
This is a wonderful song, and it became popular when I was having a very hard time in my life. It cheered me up and my daughter would laugh at it. It may have saved my life.
This was hard to miss when it came out, it was such a popular hut not just to Country Music lovers.
As you see them onscreen, L to R: Harold Reid (bass), Phil Balsley, Don Reid, Lew DeWitt. [Harold and Don are literal brothers.]
The Statlers first came to prominence as Johnny Cash's male backup singers. (Johnny's wife June Carter's family were the female backup singers.) "Flowers on the Wall" was the Statlers' first hit single. You're absolutely right. It came out when I was in high school (1966), it was a cool semi-novelty song and was on the jukebox at our local teen pool hall.
The Statlers had a long career, and had their own TV show at one point. The only personnel change was that Lew had a debilitating illness, retired and was replaced by Jimmy Fortune. I got to hear them live at a county fair, near the end of their career. It seems that they retired because radio stations no longer played classic-style Country.
Their repertoire included originals and covers, everything from semi-depressing stuff to Gospel to patriotic to novelty to nostalgia.
Take the rabbit hole. Maybe start with their early stuff like "Class of '57" or "Do You Remember These." Even at that point, they were already pushing the nostalgia button.
I knew after seeing your reaction to The Oak Ridge Boys and hearing the deep voice, I knew you'd love this song.
It was a great hit when we were young and the mention of Captain Kangeroo, an American kids show, sent us into fits of laughter. Lots more Craig. Hope you've cooled down. Great reaction. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
I was 6 years old with my brother and sister. My dad stationed in Germany in 1977...my mother loved them and would paint. Great memories...we loved that song because it mentioned Captain kangaroo. We had one tv channel. Sesame street electric company captain kangaroo....then MASH the muppet show Sanford and son all in the family. So interesting
The Statlers, they travelled with Johnny Cash for a little over a decade. Harold Reid is the Bass, he passed in 2020 at the age if 80. My grandmother listened to Lawrence Welk, but my parents listened to the Statlers and yeah, they danced. When Harold died, Home Free did a cover of this song as a tribute to him. Tim saying that Harold was a huge influence on him. There is a lot more with these guys, have fun with it.
It really *does* just make you smile, the minute it starts! Definitely check out their song, "Do You Know?(You are my sunshine?) too!
My favorite groups were The Statler Brothers, Alabama, and Shenandoah. The Statler Brothers had the most distinctive sound of all of them. You knew from the first note who it was.
My Only Love, New York City, Bed of Roses, Class of '57, I'll Go to My Grave Loving You, Do You Remember These, Do You Know You Are My Sunshine, Elizabeth, More Than a Name on a Wall (Vietnam Tribute), Whatever Happened to Randolph Scott, Susan When She Tried
These are all great!
I listened to Statlers regularly growing up. They have many great songs. Please do more!
Home Free did a great cover of this one. It was one of their lockdown videos. They did it shortly after the Statlers' bass passed away.
I absolutely loved Everything that the Statler Brothers made. Thank You!!!!
❤️. Love the Statlers!
Yes, this was playing at both sets of my grandparents when I was growing up!
From 1964 to 1972 they were also the opening act and back up singers for Johnny Cash.
Check out Bed of Roses
Class of '57
I'll Go To My Grave Loving You.
I've seen The Statler Brothers several times in concert when I was younger. A great group for live performances!
Love this band, this was a cross over hit in the 60s. There is definitely a rabbit hole to go down. The deep voice belongs to the fella on the end without the guitar. Harold Reid. They had so many great songs it is hard to choose just one. They also sang gospel music. They were the fore runners to the Oakridge Boys. The Statlers basically had the market cornered for many years as far as Quartets went. They wrote most of their own music. I have several favorites by them, More Than A Name on A Wall is one, I also love Church in the Vale, Mary Lou, Class of 57, too many to choose from.
Loved the Statler Brothers! I think they (like the Oak Ridge Boys) started out as Gospel singers. They were the backup singers for Johnny Cash & were his opening act! Harold Reid, the big guy on the left, was the bass singer. Sadly, he died in 2020.
Home Free did a fantastic version of this song to honor the Statlers during the beginning of the "plandemic" right after Harold died! You should check it out!😊
Love the Statlers. Harold Reid was the bass and the comic of the group. My favorites: Class of 57, Bed of Roses, Do You Remember These, Do you know You Are My Sunshine. I’ll go to My Grave Loving You.
When Harold passed away. Home Free did a cover of Flowers to honor him. You’ll like it too.
My favorite Statler Brothers song is More Than A Name On A Wall. I always listen to it on Memorial Day.
More Than A name On A Wall is an awesome song. Hope he reacts to it.
I remember my mother having 8 track and cassettes of the Statler Brothers. Their stuff was also big in the 70’s and heavy radio play.
1965. This was a crossover hit. Right in there with the Beatles and Stones. we liked everything. One of my favorite groups.
Now that you have heard the original of "Flowers On The Wall" by The Statler Brothers, I hope you will check out Home Free's version that was done during quarantine. It is very creative.
If I'm not mistaken they did it in tribute to Harold when he passed in 2020 from kidney failure.
@@amandapatch7496 Yes they did. Harold Reid was the bass & was a big influence on Tim Foust.
The Statler Brothers were amazing. My all time favorite is " Elizabeth". Written by Jimmy Fortune.
I love watching your reactions to music I grew up with, it brings back all the good memories.
I love love love the Statler Brothers!
Yes, I remember listening to mom playing this in the car on the 8 track, just dancing around ,me and my sister...I love The Statler Brothers and I am not a big country music fan.
CLASSIC!!! Impossible to pick a Statlers favorite.
Glad you enjoyed the Statler Brothers. I've been a fan of this group from Staunton, Virginia since their earl performances in the mid-1950s.
Always a class act. They won a Grammy for this in 1965.
It was released in 1966 though.
Homefree has done a version of Flowers on the wall while we were in the middle of the COVID19 Lockdown. It's an amazing, fun song that Homefree did a great job with!
The Ststler Brothers are one of my all time favorites. 'Bed of Roses' is definitely one you should check out. Also 'Do You Know You Are My Sunshine'. They have so many great songs.
The Statler Brothers! My favorite group while growing up. They heavily influenced the vocal groups that came after them. They are members of the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
What great harmonies. They r so very talented and so entertaining. One of my all time favorite groups. Can't go wrong with their music. Keep it coming please.
Glad you liked it..go into more and you will hear the deep guy..Love Statler brothers
Lol I was a kid I’m 58 now, my parents had this on 11 the Statler Bros were in heavy play back in the 70’s
The Statler Brothers are a wonderful rabbit hole to go down. Some many great songs, but I strongly suggest trying “Class of 57” next. If not, try “Bed of Roses”, “Do You Remember These?”, “I’ll Go To My Grave Loving You”, “Do You Know You Are My Sunshine”, “Carry Me Back”, “What Ever Happened to Randolph Scott?”, etc.
This is a great list for him to do.
Don and Harold Reid's Boys Wilson Fairchild did a tribute song to their fathers and the band called "The Statler Brothers Song"
Harold is the Bass for the Stats as well as Comedian
I met them in 1972 while they were still with Johnny Cash Met them both I was 6 yrs old and it was the safest and happiest I've ever been
The Statler Brothers was my mom's favorite group when I was young, and when I met my wife, I learned it was her favorite group, too (well, that and Queen). "Class of '57" is probably their biggest hit. "I'll go to my grave loving you", and "Do you know you are my sunshine" are favorites of mine as well. Oh, and never forget, "Silver Medals and Sweet Memories".
I was 6 years old when this songs hit the airwaves. Harold Reid was the bass, I recently saw another live version where the bass was nearly totally drowned out. Except for the "Kang" in Kangaroo.
This was featured in Pulp Fiction when Bruce Willis's character is driving in the white car. That was decades after this was a hit for the Statler Brothers.
Another couple of good ones from them are "Hello Mary Lou" and "Do You Remember These?".
I remember hearing this song in 1964. It was a really popular folk type song. I was 13.
The bass singer is on the end.
I've heard--and loved--this song since I was a kid (I am now 51). My grandparents would always listen to the Statler Brothers and watch them on tv.
I love the Statlers. I saw them in Nashville in the mid 80's. You should check out the Home Free version of this song which they did during Quarantine and also dedicated to Harold Reid, the bass singer for the Statlers. Tim mentions him and pays tribute at the end if you listen after the song. thanks for this reaction!!
Finally the Statlers!
One of my dad's favorite songs, so many memories with this song! Many great songs!
I'm only 26 and I love the Statler Brothers! I would recommend "Do You Remember These" by the Statler Brothers. It's also very upbeat and fun. Plus, they each get their own individual verses that they sing, so you would be able to hear what each singer sounds like.
Thanks for the reaction!
IM 48 AND IN EARLY 80S WHEN I WAS A LITTLE GIRL I REMEMBER THIS SONG SO WELL CUZ IT WAS ALWAYS ONE OF MY FAVORITE SONGS AND I USED TO WATCH CAPTAIN KANGAROO NOT THE SMOKING PART LOL 😆🤣
the Statlers are my favorite country group of all time. the deep voice is Harold on the far left side
I was about 4 or 5 when this song came out...60 years ago!
❤️❤️❤️❤️PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE check out Home Free's version of this song! They do it SO WELL. They filmed their video during covid, when they couldn't be together. They dedicate the song to Harold, the bass singer of the Statlers. He passed away not long before they did the song. And YES, transports me right back to when I was a kid!!❤️❤️❤️
I first heard this as a remake by a guy named Eric Heatherly, about 2000 or 2001 I think - LOVED IT (still my favorite version), I've also heard HomeFree cover it very recently. This is my1st time hearing the original though, so thank you so much for sharing this!!
one of the best groups in country music history. They got their first break when they were chosen to accompany Johnny Cash on tour, which they did for quite a while. Other great hits were DO YOU REMEMBER THIS, CLASS OF 57 HAD IT’S DREAM, BED OF ROSES, PAID BY CASH and many more.
back in the day AM radio played mostly rock and roll but this got a lot of airplay. It was a "crossover" hit as country music had it's own niche. I loved this one the first time I heard it. The Statlers music was for Everyman and they are impossible not to like
The Statlers Brothers, Harold Reid, Phil Balsley, Jimmy Fortune and Don Reid, were the premier group in country music for nearly forty years. Entering the business in 1964 as the backup voices for Johnny Cash on stage, record and TV, they served their apprenticeship with him for 8 1/2 years. During that time they recorded their first hit record, “Flowers on the Wall”, and were regulars on the weekly Johnny Cash Show on ABC TV. The 90s saw them starring in their own television series, The Statler Brothers Show, on TNN, The Nashville Network for seven years and remaining the number one show on the network its entire run. Deciding to retire from a lifetime of traveling and enjoy the good life in their homes in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, they gave their farewell concert in the fall of 2002. The Most Awarded Act in the History of Country Music.
I think Harold Reid is the fellow you are interested in hearing, Fun song, Do you remember these?
Love the Statlers!
Love the Statler Brothers, they were a great group
I'm guilty of dancing around the room to it yesterday as well as when I was a kid. It's pretty much my theme song. HAHA
I was so little when this came out I love it you should listen to Home Frees cover of it. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING
The Statler Brothers started as a gospel quartet. Check out Wilson Phillips The Statler Brothers song it is their dedication to them. Also Bed of Roses
One of my favorite songs by these guys is I’ll Go To My Grave Loving You
You're right. Had a lot of fun with this one! Good song, great singers. Captain Kangaroo they sang about was a show we watched as kids at our house every morning before we caught the bus for school. Memories...
Absolutely love the Statler Brothers
Your into great old country. This group came from Gospel to country and took over. Nothing could touch them for harmonies, lot's of top hits . 50s deep rabbit hole.
The bass just passed away last year Harold Ried.
Bed of Roses is a top hit. To hear more of Harold, listen to Atlanta Blues.
Class of '57, Do You Remember These, Randolph Scott (can't recall the actual name of the song, but it's about cowboy movie stars, including Randolph Scott)
And the tribute to the Vietnam War memorial, a wall of names in Washington DC,
"(he's more than a) Name on a Wall"
I loved listening to the Statler Brothers. My all-time favorite was "The Class of 57". I'm glad you enjoyed their sound. Best wishes to you and your family.
The deep base is my uncle, Harold Reid. They all grew up together and went to Wilson Memorial High School.
Yay! The Statlers! Love them ! From my home state of Virginia! So many songs, Atlanta Blue, Forever, Class of 57, And a must is More than a Name on a Wall- tribute to fallen solder. A good album is Statler Brothers live and sold out - so much fun and is almost like being at one of their concerts. They never disappointed the fans As always love your channel!
MY gawd, theyre young!
Yay!!! Finally!! Love this song!!
This is my favorite Statler Brothers song. Oh how times have changed. When my wife was growing up her parents would not let her listen to this song. Yes we watched Captain Kangaroo but they wouldn't let her listen to the song because of the lyrics right before this, Smoking Cigarettes. They told if she listened to the song she would probably smoke cigarettes when she got older, lol. I guess they were right, she has never smoked a cigarette. Thanks for the reaction.
I didn't dance to it, but I definitely sang it. I also now sing the Home Free remake. The one closest to this end in the side view of all 4 is the bass.
Just the best country group by far. Some of my favorite songs have been mentioned and I would like to add: Who Am I To Say (written by Kim Reid, Harold's daughter), The Official Historian Of Shirley Jean Berell, You Can't Have Your Kate and Edith Too, How To Be A Country Star, Too Much On My Heart, and You'll Be Back Every Night In My Dreams. I'd say you'll be quite busy traveling this rabbit hole! Great Reaction as always❤
The Statler Brothers were very popular along time ago! A lot of gospel music and some funny songs like this! Home free cover this song during quarantine !!
Harold Reid who passed in 2020 was the bass.
This song made a cameo appearance in the movie "Pulp Fiction".
One of my favorite songs of theirs is "Elizabeth." Others are "Hello MaryLou" and "My Only Love." "Too Much On My Heart" "Small, Small World" We Got Paid by Cash"
Great song of theirs. Elizabeth is my favorite of theirs
Thank you! I would highly recommend “Class of ‘57”, “Pictures”, “Bed of Rose’s”, and since my name is Susan “Susan when she tried “.😀
They are still active. Check them out!
Home Free did a version in honor of Harold Reid (the bass) when he died.
I saw them in concert when I was a kid and they told the story of how they got their name. Waiting to go out onstage for their first performance, they saw a box a Statler tissues, so they were going to be the 'Tissue Brothers'... this was probably in 1972...
I remember skating to it at the skating rink on Saturdays...😁
The Statler Brothers version is my favorite version and I think the original version of the song and always will be however Home Free does a really nice cover of this song as well
