durn it I can't even make it through a reaction of this song without bursting into tears. Right in the feels. R.I.P. to all who gave all and thank you to that serve. RIP to my Dad and Grandfathers and Uncles as well as an Aunt that served .
This has always been one of my favorite Statler Brother songs and is still just as beautiful and moving today. Thank you for your service and to all of those who have served in the past and are currently serving today for us. ❤️
This was the war of my generation, and looking back I realize how young they really were. When the design was chosen, there was a lot of conflict over it. Many did not feel it was an appropriate memorial. But I have been there several times, and it is profound, and now it is hard for anyone to imagine it any other way. This is especially true late at night after the crowds have left. The name of the father of a good friend of ours, is on that wall. He was only 6 when he lost his father. And each name was a person, someone’s child, and when you see them all inscribed there, it really hits you. And then we think of the ones that died after they came home, but the war killed them as sure as those killed in combat. What makes me sad is that the same is happening still, our military are not only dying in combat, but afterward from the damage sustained to their body and souls. While the song refers to Viet Nam vets and their memorial wall, it could be about any war, for every tombstone represents a wall.
As a Vietnam vet I loosely followed the controversy over the Wall and heard the arguments about how non heroic the design was from many in the hypocritical politician class who put no skin in the fight. Later in the '80s I was in the DC area and decided to visit the memorial. It shook me to a degree I never expected and I won't attempt to try to convey here all the emotions I felt that day. But I did think that maybe, just maybe people seeing all those names that represented real people who were sons, fathers, brothers would hope that it also might be a memorial to end all wars. But I was wrong.
I remember when President Nixon said that no more troops would be sent to Vietnam. I can't tell you how relieved my mother was. My two older brothers were of draft age and could have been sent.
Oh yeah the Statler Brothers you can't miss with them. But hey now that I think about it I would like to see you do John Conlee Miss Emilys Picture and she loves my troubles away oh heck he has a lot of good songs check him out you wont be sorry. Thanks for sharing take care and stay safe.
Brother, I don't know if you read these comments, but as one who sailed on the USS Forrestal, toward the end of 'Nam (and gets teary eyed every time I hear this song), thanks... Just thanks 👍
Our Vietnam Vets deserved better than they got! He would die one night When the winds turned cold In that cardboard box He had called his home. Then they tossed his corpse Into a pauper’s grave And left his soul to roam The land of the brave. - Craig A. Davis
My husband spent two tours in Vietnam. He wanted to go see the wall but never made it. He spent 22 years in the Air Force. I'm so glad he stayed safe and so heart broken for those who didnt.
When I was stationed in Spain while in the Air Force, three of us were off on the 4th of July and walking around Madrid. We rounded a corner and there was a huge American flag flying, we all stopped and stood at attention for some time. We finally figured out we were at the Embassy. After we recovered I noticed all three of us had a tear rolling down our cheek's. I was too young for Vietnam, but I knew upper classmen that had been there. Thank you for sharing and remembering your shipmates!
RUclips algorithm recommended this to me, probably because I listen to Statler Brothers a fair amount. The Statler Brothers once upon a time had a huge following and they were the opening act for Johnny Cash for 8 years. Awesome music.
Some of my childhood friends have their names written on that wall. We signed up, believing that we were fighting for freedom only to find out that Johnson was sending troops to Nam to help the French to re-colonize it. Regardless of Johnson's motives, those who served, served with hearts bent on freeing people therefore their sacrifice was for another man's freedom! Me U.S. Navy 1967-1971. I feel the tears that your holding back brother.
Thank you for your service, Sir.🇺🇸 God bless the USA especially in these turbulent times. I had a POW bracelet during the Vietnam War. My soldier never came back. I prayed for the peace of his family.🙏
Time flies. It was 33 years ago that I was getting ready to be shipped out to MCRD in your neck of the woods. I just graduated from high school May 1989 and trying to live it up that summer before my life was about to completely change. Semper Fi
I hope your Veterans Day yesterday was good. Thank you for your service, from ex 1st Lt. Lula Todd, USAF Nurse Corps 1971-73. And I'm the mother of Capt B Todd, USN, a submariner. I'm proud of all of us.
Amen my friend. Between High School and a couple Army buddies I served with, I have 4 friends that are memorialized on that wall. There are a few patriotic country songs, to include this one, that really pull at my heart strings. i hope you had a happy 4th. God bless
no person can feel the pain of a mother who dearly loved the only son she had.....a son that never came back home to her. This breaks me down to a shredded leaf.

I wish they hadn't reversed the image of the old soldier saluting. They made it so it appeared he was using the wrong hand.
As the mom of a 20 year Air Force MSGT, I thank you for the recognition.
