I’ve never heard of putting sugar on rice. That’s different for sure. If I were to have white rice, I’d usually add butter or olive oil, salt, and black pepper.

I live in Michigan. We don't have Waffle Houses. The closest thing we have is Dennys.

To settle this "debate"... grits should never be sweet. Butter and cheese are the appropriate flavors.
If someone ask for their grits with sugar, we ask them politely yet firmly to leave.
