Over 58,000 American soldiers are named on the Vietnam War memorial. Etched into 70 black granite slabs, each 40 inches wide and the tallest being 10.1 feet tall. They are arranged by their casualty date, such that those who fell in battle are surrounded by the names of their mates. Reading the names of those who fell on the same day gives you a unique perspective on the diversity of cultures and countries that make up the American melting pot.
That guy with the bass voice, Harold Reid, passed away back in 2020. You definitely need to go down the Statler Brothers rabbit hole. A song in a similar vein is "Silver Medals and Sweet Memories". Their first big hit was "Flowers on the Wall". One of my favorites is "Your Picture in the Paper". For another song about the Wall, you should listen to George Jones's "50,000 Names".
Harri, You are only beginning your experience with the Statler Brothers. It gets better with every song. The Statler Brothers represent country music & America in the purest way! --- Bill
Probably one of the most naturally talented human beings in history, and a great man too. If you want to get hit in the feels, check out his live recording of “I Believe” with Dailey & Vincent, but watch the long version where Jimmy tells the story of why he wrote the song before they sing it. ruclips.net/video/WrMEfiKX8b8/видео.htmlsi=sMwzSpnuJbZDGfBc
Love these guys!!! Miss them so much! Some other great songs, "Elizabeth", 'My Only Love", "Silver Medals and Sweet Memories", "Maple Street Memories", "My Music My Memories and You", "Too Much on My Heart", "I'll Take Care of You", "Amazing Grace", "Years Ago", "We Got Paid by Cash", "Shenandoah", "Am I Crazy?", "The Best I Know How", "Holding On", "Class of '57", "Your Picture in the Paper." And so many more!!! I've loved these guys all 51 years of my life. Their music carried me through my life, in the good and the bad. They were always there. When they retired I felt like I lost my friends. Well I have all their albums, I listen to them often. But I sure do miss them.
I have all their albums. There are so many great songs they recorded that never got air time. Their bass, Harold Reid, has passed. Check out their song "That Summer". Harold does a wonderful recitation on that record.
The Statler Brothers created some of the finest music your ears will ever hear. For many years they traveled with Johnny Cash and were part of his TV show. I have been to Vietnam Memorial, known as The Wall, several times. It has a profound effect, especially at night.
@@douglasburgess680 So true. They said they absorbed so much country music history listening to Mother Maybelline Carter talk about the past. Folks wondered if they would have to break up when Lew got to sick to perform, but finding Jimmy Fortune was worth a fortune. He wrote so many great songs for them, he fit right in. And then having their own show later. The Statler Brothers show was a must see on Saturday nights. They were more than just a performing band, they were all around entertainers.
Harri, As you were told before, Harold Reid (8/21/1939-4/24/2020) whose bass voice, songwriting, and his gift for humor made very popular in Country Music. Fair reaction 🎶👊🏾
Harri, if you love bass singers, you need to hear J.D. Sumner who was listed in the GUINESS WORLD BOOK OF RECORDS as the LOWEST bass IN THE WORLD! He and his group, the Stamps Quartet were backup singers for Elvis. He also sang with the Blackwood Brothers and Master's Five. The song that got him the award for lowest bass was BLESSED ASSURANCE . Look him up and enjoy!!
Listening to Jimmy Fortune is a religious experience. I grew up going to countless locations with my parents as my dad sang lead, and played acoustic guitar, in a gospel group. We frequently traveled with another group, including Doran Puckett, who sang bass. His voice was like rolling thunder, and I'll never forget when he made the roof vibrate to the point where dust drifted down off the rafters like snow. RIP Doran, I'll never forget you.
If you like The Statler Brothers, look up Wilson Fairchild. These two men are the sons of the only two real brothers in The Statlers, Harold and Don Reid. They’ve sung and recorded several Statler hits. Definitely check them out! The Statlers were my mom’s favorite and one of mine, too. The week she passed, I played Statler music for her a few hours every day. Although she was slipping away, I kept telling her it was her own private concert. ❤️
The Statlers were simply great. Their annual "Happy Birthday America" free 4th of July concert in their home town of Staunton Virginia was something special. Harold was the bass voice and the comedian of the group in concert. A very special band in music history.
As many quartets the Statlers got started as a Southern Gospel Quartet in churches. They performed at the retirement concert of the Cathedrals and showed on the Gaither Homecoming Videos. The Oak Ridge Boys, who also started in southern Gospel, have returned to their roots. I love quartets.
All right my bestie friend.... When I was a kid, I can remember hearing this group on the radio at my grandparents place. I tip my hat to all who have been affected by any wars. This was a fantastic reaction ‼️💯🔥🗽🇺🇲🙂👍🏻
Harri this always makes me teary eyed have a classmate who's name is on the wall so glad my late Nam vet brother got to see this site before he passed away
I only found your channel this evening but after watching a few of your videos I was happy to subscribe. You seem to like "folk songs/ songs that are touching. Have you listened to Conway Twitty, "Hello Darling ", Tight Fitting Jeans? All of his music is great! How about Don Williams, Ghost Story is one of my favorites! I hope you choose to listen to them. Thank you 😊

Harri, you need to react to Flowers on the Wall and Do You Remember These which prominently feature the bass singer. They also frequently toured with Johnny Cash and the Carter Family.
A couple of years ago you did a reaction to a cover of You're Only Lonely by Fortune, Walker, Rogers and Isaacs (now known as Brother's of the Heart.) You were very complimentary of the lead singer. That was Jimmy Fortune, the tenor in this video, who sang tenor for the Statler Brothers 21 years..
The Statlers performed from about 1955 to 2002. Their first chart hit was "Flowers on the Wall," way back when I was in high school in '66 or so. They were also Johnny Cash's opening act and male backup singers from 1964 to 1972 (that's them in "Daddy Sang Bass"). They retired due to a combination of age and the apparent reluctance of radio stations to play traditional Country music any more. I got to hear them live once, at a county fair, in the late 1990s. Harold Reid was the bass you mentioned. His brother Don Reid (who introduced the song in this vid) was the primary lead singer, although Phil Balsley and Lew DeWitt also took leads. DeWitt was the only one who routinely played an instrument while performing. He also wrote some of their material. DeWitt retired from the group around 1982 due to ill health. He was replaced by Jimmy Fortune, who was also a guitarist and songwriter. Pretty seamless transition. Jimmy revitalized the group with tunes such as "Elizabeth," "Too Much On My Heart," "My Only Love," and the song you just heard. He sang lead on a good share of his own compositions. If you want a taste of the group's humor and nostalgia appeal in their early days, check out "Class of '57" and "Do You Remember These?". Those songs will also let you hear all 4 members, even Harold, each take the lead on a verse. Yes, this is a rabbit hole you could go down further. :)
Hey man, just discovering your reaction channel, you've covered alot of my fav tubes, i noticed you've done Lord Huron's "ends of the earth" but i didnt see "The night we met" anywhere unless i missed it! its a genuine gem of a song, definitely recommend a listen if you want an incredible broken heart song, got me through some rough times. 😎
The bass singer is Harold Reid who died a couple years ago. He was the brother of the lead singer.

The Wall is the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D C. My brother is a Vietnam vet and came home safe to his wife, young daughter, parents and me.

Jimmy Fortune is one of the GREATEST tenors in country music. He’s singing lead.
Yes he is and after he joined the group, he wrote most of their hit songs as well, he was also a great songwriter.

@@chrisoakley5830 I think Jimmy is still going strong in his solo career.
@@pinky2245 You're right, I often hear of shows that he is playing on a classic country music station that I listen to.
Jimmy is certainly great. To me, the only one with the better tenor is Lew Dewitt.
You should listen to Do You Remember When and Flowers On The Wall
I think "Flowers On The Wall" was their first big hit.
Harold Reid is bass! He is phenomenal and also hilarious!! He was always my favorite!!

This song brings tears to my eyes. My late father n law polished part of the granite slabs those names are on. He worked in Elberton ,Ga all his life
RIP Harold Reid, the man with the bass boice. my all time favorite groiup
Oh those gorgeous harmonies. Unmatched.
Mr. Harold was the bass. May he rest in Paradise and his memory be a blessing.
I have all their albums. There are so many great songs they recorded that never got air time. Their bass, Harold Reid, has passed. Check out their song "That Summer". Harold does a wonderful recitation on that record.
I always loved Harold's bass on "Do You Know You Are My Sunshine"

We got paid by Cash, an awesome song about those times.

I absolutely love the Statler Bros..Such harmony.Beautiful dedication and story
Sadly, Harold Reid left us in 2020. He is sorely missed, but led a joyous and eventful life and was loved by multitudes.
The bass, Harold Reid, died 2 or 3 years ago. Home Free has done a couple of Statler Bros songs - most notably "Flowers on the Wall".
FINALLY!

Harold Reid is the bass singer, and you need to hear him and J.D. Sumner jokingly try and out do each other. Both have amazing voices.

The addition of Jimmy Fortune was fabulous! 😀❤️
My favorite Statler Brothers songs are "The Movies" and "Do You Remember These"
mine is Thank You World and Elizabeth
Wondetful, wonderful, wonderful, Thank you for playing there music. Such a great group of gentlemen that really could sing.
The main with the deep voice is Harold Reid. Sadly he passed away in April of 2020

Hi Mr. Harri., As I look at the screen the man on the left is the bass.. ♠Mr.G..
Noah Found Grace live by the Statlers
Love your reactions Harri! React to Elizabeth and Atlanta Blues by the Statler Brothers for more of their best.
The only other group I’ve heard that does an amazing performance of this song is The Petersens.
I want to hear the bass guy from the Oak Ridge Boys duet with this bass guy!
That's Harold!!

Unfortunately Harold Reid (the bass guy) sadly passed a few years ago. :(

That guy was harold reid he passed away
Wasn't as much a protest song nut a way to honor the soldiers that gave all. Wrote after the war was over.
I didn't know they did protest songs.
