- When my good friend told me, that when the time comes, he is leaving his body to medical science, I was surprised. I was even more surprised when I discovered how many famous people have also left their bodies to medical science. I remember 15 of them in this video.

It's really sad how Butterfly McQueen passed. And I think between Bobby Darren's rheumatism and finding out about who his biological mother was his heart broke.
Lon Chaney was probably the only person to donate his body to science twice. The first time when he was the Frankenstein Monster.🤣

I didn't know Butterfly McQueen died in such a horrible way! That's so sad.
I've wanted to donate my body to a body farm since I found out they existed. They're research facilities where donated bodies are placed in various environments to study the way they decompose so that forensics teams can use that information to solve murders and other crimes. As someone who is really into true crime and mysteries, having my remains be used to potentially help bring victims families the justice they deserve seems like a good use of my meat suit when I'm done with it. :)
They had a documentary on the body farm several years ago..I first heard of them through a mystery novel I read..

This was very interesting to me. Not a lot of people do this. I learned from my son (who is an MD),about it from the 12 years he spent in Med school. It’s a very precious gift that they give us all.

My x -husband's body was donated to the medical college of a local university. The university had their own memorial service for those who had donated their bodies during that year. That was an unexpected kindness for their families and loved ones. Have a good Sunday Steve. Blessings - Judith 🎭🎵

Country singer Earl Thomas Conley, who did a duet with Anita Pointer called Too Many Times, died on April 10, 2019 at age 77 of Cerebral Atrophy, a form of dementia, and donated his body to medical science; was donated to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN; also, seizure is the correct spelling; enjoyable video as always, Steve!

Loved ETC! Broke my heart when he passed.
I saw Earl Thomas Conley in 1987. He was the opening act for Waylon Jennings who I was really going to see. Earl was so fantastic that he almost brought the house down! Though the audience was worn out from clapping and yelling for Earl that Waylon didn't get the reception that I had been used to when I had seen him in the past.
Thank You Steve for sharing. When they donate their bodies, the faces are wrapped, it has to do with keeping the persons dignity. I took a pre med cadaver class when I was in nursing school. It sure opened my eyes to our actual organs . Keep up the great work Steve 🌷

I have a question. Granted they wrap the head. But if it's a famous person, is the name announced? Or do students just get a generic description of the body before it's dissected? I think I would be nervous & fascinated @the same time.

Rocky Dennis' body was also donated to medical science. I realize he wasn't an actor or playwright, yet his life was influential enough to have it chronicled in a move... "Mask."

Joseph Merrick's (a.k.a. "The Elephant Man") body was also kept and studied, with the actual skeleton being kept on private display at the Queen Mary University of London medical school, with the soft tissues being buried in the City of London Cemetery.

In the mid 1970's,I worked in a State Mental Hospital. While taking classes there in nursing, I had to go to the basement and get some papers from a filing cabinet. But when I opened it something wrapped in brown heavy paper rolled around in the drawer. After I got back to the ward,I told a nurse about what happened and she told me that a woman had died and donated her head to the hospital. Why it was in the filing cabinet and for how many years,I don't know. But there were many bizarre things that happened in that place. It WAS haunted for real. But has since been closed and most buildings tom down. The place housed patients for over 100 yrs. Steve,I could tell you true stories. Peace and Love my friend.

My Mom and Dad will be donating their bodies to Medical Science, when the time comes and when my brother Steven died from drowning, his eyes were given to a young girl, so that she could see. To this day, I don't know her name or where she is.
So sorry to hear about your brother Keith. But how nice that his death helped a young girl see. Thanks for sharing this with us.
I was born missing 2/3 of the left part of my brain And we have found out through the years my right side has overgrown to compensate for the brain loss so I've always talked about donating my brain to science
Wow, I'm guessing that's not very common. Sounds like it hasn't negatively effected you, which is good.
I'm blind in the right half of each eye and paralyzed on the right side of my body They told my mom I would never walk or talk I started walking at 26 months And I like to say I don't stop running and I don't shut up
It was certainly a very unselfish option that these fine ladies and gentlemen took. Bobby Darin, in specific, was an extremely contemplative man. He suffered from rheumatic fever as a child that seriously damaged his heart. There is no question that he had a fervent reason for his body be used in research to combat heart disease.

I used to embalm anatomical donors for our local research hospital. Their storage morgue holds 200 without refrigeration for up to two years. If a nearby medical school needs bodies, they are sent out. Although it is a generous gift, there doesn't seem to be a shortage of bodies. I remember one day while working, we were instructed to inspect all inventoried bodies for scars from thoracic or abdominal surgery. If they had surgical scars, we cremated those bodies. Their record keeping was commendable, and all dissected parts would be labeled, collected and reunited for cremation. My question has always been, these bodies are donated for free. Yet the schools charge for their bodies. Where does the money go?
That's an excellent question Matt. Maybe for the storage and admin work, etc. Thanks for sharing this with us. Something most of us never think about.
I've asked the same question about organ donors. Hospitals make a great deal from the organs. The medical professionals get really nasty and show their true selves when that question is posed to them. I still haven't received an answer.
Steve.... very thought provoking vlog. Almost all of the people mentioned had strong convictions about a purpose of life. When my beloved father passed his eyes were donated. From what I understand after death we can still do something great and donate our remains for a worthwhile cause. Thank you for this inspirational vlog. Best to your husband. Hi Norma, Jim is great. And thanks for sharing that about your dad. I'm doing the same when my time comes. I hope they can use every part. If there's anything left, it will be cremated and interred in the niche I already have. If nothing is left, then I guess just a name will go on the niche. :-)

My late BIL was actually rejected.. I didn’t know they ever rejected bodies.. I wasn’t told if there was a reason his was…his stepdaughter however donated her body .. after they were done using the body, the remains were cremated and returned to the family.. I don’t know if that’s policy or if you have to request returning of the remains..
My uncle donated his body after passing due to lung cancer. His remains were also cremated and returned to my aunt.
NOK or family that's responsible got the aftercare can choose to have the body cremated and returned or disposed of by the facility doing the research. One good reason to have your will and Advanced Directive planned out in advance.
I've heard that they have so many donations now that they have more than they need. Thanks for sharing jerrie.

Hi Steve! This is an interesting video. I wouldn’t have thought that so many actors, writers and directors would donate their bodies to Science. I was particularly surprised about Bobby Darin (wasn’t He married to Connie Francis at one time?). At one time, I thought of donating my body and spoke to my children about it, they weren’t really receptive to the idea. Medical Science could have a field day with me. My Son told me that the only thing they would would want was my brain. He said that they would want to know “how Mexican Mothers think”, he’s a clown! Wow very interesting video. I wonder when you say donated their body does they mean a body part of their whole body? Wow can you imagine a bunch of medical students dissecting a body and it could be Walter Pidgeon who played Dr. Moribus on the Sci Fi classic Forbidden Planet?
It's the whole body and yes, it would be very weird, especially if you were a fan of one of these celebs.
Walter Pigeon comes from my hometown of Saint John New Brunswick Canada…. Born in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, Pidgeon was the son of Hannah (née Sanborn), a housewife, and Caleb Burpee Pidgeon, a haberdasher. Pidgeon received his formal education in local schools and the University of New Brunswick, where he studied law and drama.

My husband has chose to do this. It is written up that he is to be cremated afterwards and his remains returned to be buried with me. He’s had diabetes since he was 6, diagnosed 50 years ago. He felt he might be an interesting study.

Great video Steve I did now that these actors and actress donated their bodies to science.
My uncle donated his body to medical science he wanted doctors learning about heart disease to see what 8 heart attacks do to the heart. We did not get his ashes back for about a year and when we picked them up they said you know we cremate more than one body at a time. My sister and I looked at each other and said we won’t tell that to my mom he was her brother. He was going to be buried in a Potters field through the medical science team but we said no and had him interred with his parents.
Wow, that’s all sorts of disrespectful. I think you and your sister made the right decision not informing your mother. This must have left a bad taste in your mouth.
What a great philanthropic think to do, especially since they are know and respected famous actors. In times like these this could be a boost to organ donation and human education for prospective Doctors . Thank you and be safe and careful my friend...

My aunt is going to science. Buried her husbands ashes above his father. She was the healthiest person I know until the stroke. Now it is going to be a useful study.

@@TheGraveyardChannel she is 90 now, and my last aunt on the one side of my family. I am 66 soon 67 and she is still healthier than me. She only had the stroke a little while back and we all said “she’s got this” well she can’t walk. She never regained that. Can’t tell you how many hiking trails she has been on. She was super woman, kept her girlish figure and probably could wear her wedding dress if she had it! A stroke takes just her legs. Sharp as a tack!❤️

On this list, the person I most wish had I grave that I could visit is Lon Chaney, Jr. But I respect the choices made for a noble endeavor.
It's nice to see that a young man has learned to appreciate the old "Universal Horror Films." Yes, they were outstanding, as was Creighton Chaney in his roles.

I agree Kurt. From what I've heard, once they use the body it is usually then cremated and the remains are then returned to the family. So some of these people could still have public niches. Back then, though, they may not have returned them.

Often these remains are used to train medical students or try out new surgical procedures. So it really does benefit the living and future generations.

Another actress to add to the list would be Teresa Wright. Many know her from the movie "Pride of the Yankees", with Gary Cooper.
She donated her body to the Yale University School of Medicine and is buried in a mass grave in New Haven CT.

One of Republic Pictures' most versatile actors, Roy Barcroft, appeared In scores of films from the late 1930s and into the 1960s when he passed away. His body was donated to medical science.

I don’t know why, but when I was watching this video I thought about the episode of the Mary Tyler Moore show where WJM’s resident clown Chuckles was killed by a ‘rogue elephant’ while he was wearing a Peter Peanut suit….
All the characters from the show ended up at , where else?, Mary’s apartment where they all talked about how they wanted to go….
My favorite was Lou Grant, who said all he wanted “… was for someone to put his hat on him and leave him by the curb “
You have to see this episode, in spite of the subject matter, it was one of funniest!

1:11 I know him in films such as Captain Hook in Peter Pan, a reference model for King Stefan and provided some additional lines in Sleeping Beauty, The 5000 Fingers of Dr T, Snidley Whiplash in Dudley Do Right and as the Grinch in Grinch Night.
Mr. Conried was also in The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T, a movie with a screenplay by Dr. Suess; he plays a piano teacher; interesting movie for 1953, & not a bad one.
