I deliver straight talking, easy to follow, honest, professional, calculated advice to all of my viewers from beginner to tour pro. This tried and tested method of coaching has helped many golfers achieve their personal goals and beyond.
Great Tip to use the alignment rods.
If I remember correctly, I saw a tour pro always have that
what I call a kind of
" Hold off " look about his swing.
I figured it was to keep from breaking his wrist and like you said Flicking at the ball.
A Dear friend of mine that died 5 years ago was very good friends with Sam Snead, ( Actually , Mr. Snead got him his first job as Head Golf Pro at The Greenbrier )
His Name was Jack Bell, He played in 4
U.S Opens and some other tournaments when he decided to teach and Manage rather than try and make a Living as a Tour Pro.
Both he and Mr. Snead saw each other very often every year and as Mr. Bell coached the VCU Golf team it became a tradition every year to take the team up in the Mountains to spend the Day with Mr. Snead before the Season began.
I wish I could tell you I had the opportunity to have met Mr. Snead but I did not.
However, I was blessed because a lot of the knowledge that Mr. Bell gave me he got Straight from Mr. Sneads mouth.
1 piece I always try to follow is, Unless you are around the green or you are forced to manipulate a shot, You should swing each iron in your bag the same speed, Now obviously longer irons will go faster but how you swing the club should Never change.
He said many golfers seem to think they need to put a little something extra behind the 9 iron to get it there and when they do, They swing harder but not faster and more times than not they also end up in trouble. Instead back down to the 8 iron with the normal swing .
Same swing on every iron, No more, No Less.
And always remember, On Score cards they don't draw Pictures or ask for descriptions only a number.
I'm not sure why I even typed all of this.
Maybe you remind me of Mr. Bell in some way.
Of Course your not in your upper 80's and are still alive.
Well if Jesus doesn't come back first I hope and pray you live at least that long.
Thanks for ALL the great videos.
Some I know and more importantly You remind me that I had forgotten about certain things and you teach me as well .
Will be playing in My 2 day Best Ball tourney this coming Friday and Saturday.
Got to get more practice in.
Was struggling a little the other day but finished the last 4 holes at 1 under and should have been 3 under.
Again Thanks.
😴
I finally figured out whats happening when I get tired and start to miss. When I cup the wrist in transition, it causes me to dip my shoulder, yesterday I was working on a self prescribed drill, forcing my lead shoulder to feel like it stays lower than my back shoulder, and down through the swing, almost like it were on an escalator. I notices that this was a very unusual feeling for me, what I've got to do is focus on training my brain to have a new feeling down through impact and into a slightly more balanced finish position.
I have a flip with driver. I will use this for short shots and get the feel. I’ll let you know if I break a rib. 😂 I’m a scratch golfer and always struggle with this. I need to cure it and I’ll be even better positioned off the tee.
Love this video, I have been trying to to stop flicking my hands will definitely use it Tommaso
Content is spot on and much appreciated, Pete. One suggestion is to simplify the text pop-ups - all of the sudden there are six text pop-ups aligned every which way and I didn't know which to read first and I had trouble reading it when it is turned 90 degrees. It is such a professional presentation, but this might make it more user-friendly. Thanks again for the teaching videos; it really supplements the vlogs nicely. Cheers!
great drill, I have a rotation issue more than anything else, and like the drill for that , looking forward to the series
Thanks Pete. I’ve had this problem for a little over a year now. I’ve been trying to fix it by feel, but I haven’t had a drill to work on it. I think this will help.
Great drill to stop me flipping and stopping my 2 way miss. Thanks Peter
Like these tip videos. Would like to come get a lesson one day but live in London. Have tried a few visits of going to the driving range and found a lot more accurate on 30 to 50 odd yard chips using body rotation so thanks
Another very useful lesson...Thanks, Pete. Will be working on this drill as soon as I am physically able to swing a club again...
This drill gave me my distance back. Thanks a lot Pete.
:)
Thanks for the video, Pete. I've had the same problem for a while and couldn't find a drill that really worked for me. Can't wait to try this drill out
Very professionally put together video Pete! Liking it a lot
Thanks Anthony - lots more of this style to come
I love this drill for pitching. Glad to see some instructional videos Pete, always been my favourites.
Great video Pete, I am going to try this the next time I go to the range.
My instructor used this same drill for me to keep me from flicking my wrists. It helped a lot. I still have a flick but it's much later in the swing.
This isn’t something I do but I really liked the format. Keep up the good work Pete, thank you 😊
That is so useful, I have a huge flick/scoop through impact. Using trackman it showed up that I put more loft on my 8 iron than the comparison golfer (who admittedly was a pro) had on his 9 iron and even wedge! I’m in need of a drill to fix it, just don’t have an alignment stick.
You can use anything that you can attach to the club, a garden can would do the job
Love the stuff Pete! Thank you for sharing your wisdom. Hands down the best RUclips golf instructor in my opinion.
:)
Two thumbs up Pete, probably a drill I need the most, the anti-flick and improved body rotation. Along with this, getting the pressure moving to the target side and not leaning back should produce solid strikes. Great tutorial, short and to the point.
Good stuff Chris - let me know if it helps you
Great drill Pete. Dan Whittaker has shown this drill as well and it really does help promote body turn. Keep these tips coming. It is these short tips which really are valuable to handicap golfers.
Plenty more on the way Martin
I do have a horrible flick. My impact and address positions are identical from upper body stalling. Thanks for drill.
1:55 you had a pepping tom 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 good stuff as always
Haha
Love this drill, it’s actually what I have been using as well since I stop my body rotation at impact and flip as well. My golf professional calls it the punisher because of the painful impact if you flick at it. Great video @peterfinchgolf
Pete, I’ve noticed your practice swing emphasizes rotation, particularly in your recent course vlogs. Is the full body rotation something you’re thinking about at the tee box as well? Cheers!
Yes its something Ive been working on with Dan
I haven’t used the stick method, but with my first lesson with my local PGA pro, he was getting me to simply do 1/2 swings so i could my body to rotate. Works a treat. Don’t worry about the distance, just the body to turn. This has helped heaps.
BTW liking the new slick titles. What happened to Finch’s Fixes from insta?
Finch's Fixes is coming!
I will try this
What a great teaching tool.
Peter - you are at your best when you are teaching and sharing it with us. I do enjoy your golf matches around the world for their entertainment value and its good to follow your excellent golf swing wherever it takes you, but your teaching sessions are second to none. Robbie Sprague
Hi Pete, love your vids. What do you think of the the impact golf ball as training aid ? would it help to get rid of a problem like this ? Thanx keep them vids coming !
Can you do a video on properly reading greens? It is something I have really struggled with for as long as Ive played golf. I don’t know of any drills I can work on other than just practice on any particular green. I really appreciate the knowledge oh wise one. Thanks for your hard work!
'Wise one' haha, Ill see what I can do bud
Cool edit and great short easy to understand format 👍
Thanks Rick. I don't flick as such but sometime stop short on my follow through rotation so I might try this one to feel the alignment stick rolling around my hip.
Rob Biles thanks Rick 😂
Okay, got me, I mean the brother from another mother, Pete.
Dont worry, we get it all the time lol
Love the tip Pete! Does this cause a more forward press of the hands that would cause the club to deloft? I get that thought stuck in my head and flick through the shot
Great pointer
Good drill I’ll try that 👍
Hi Peter. Long time watcher, and love your vids. I've been working on connection and body rotation as well as staying more on top of the ball. If I lean back at all ice noticed that my ball flight is left of left. And just like your student I used to scoop at impact. I've been keeping a flater right wrist through impact and the results are very nice. My main swing thought is connection. Should I be focused on one of the other factors? Great video as always.
Love it! Keep em coming!
Awesome video. Similar to the no throw drills from George Gankas
:)
Will find the appropriate drill size and go for this . I'm not a flicker by the way !
Had painful forearms and elbows, realise I'm a flicker. Will start this drill immediately. Thanks!
Ah always love a new instructional series! Thx for the great drill Pete! I’m glad the Swing Quest vote won out but I do also like what some other commenters have done & will throw a #FinchesFixes on here. Great job. Looking fwd to more!
:)
Great video Peter, the guy peeking in at 1:54 made me crack tho :D
Nice video
Merci beaucoup Mr Finch
Deriene
I have done this drill and countless others but I can’t seem to get the same feel with a full shot. I go right back to flipping. It has plagued me for years
does the alignement stick literally fit in the butt of the grip? if not is there a correct way to hold the stick with the hands whilst swinging? cheers
Awesome drills
Cheers Nie
When I do this I hit a shank any advice pete ? 🙏
very nice!
Hmm... I need to practice this ASAP! #7
Quick, get out there!
Do I actually put the alignment stick inside the top of the grip? When I try to do this, the hole seems too small to put the alignment stick in. Please Help.
I have a real problem with hitting all my irons fat do you have any drills or tips to help me?
Wow. RUclips suggested this video and I'm already a fan of you and Rick but I struggle with distance not accuracy and I often am so much flicking at impact that the end of the grip flicks back and into my right wrist (I'm right handed) showing me that it's so severe it's actually hurting me if it rubs too much.
I add too much loft too.
This suggestion looks very much like me. I also swing my hips and arms a then sort of 'stop' not finishing the swing. I'll try your suggestions. Thanks
PS other than altering a club could I use a yardstick or something long enough without actually impact then switch to a club?
Yeah, I think anything to get used to that movement
Good idea this series. Fancy reviewing my swing. I need a lot of help 😂
You'd be more than welcome in for lessons!
Great instruction.
Thanks Bo
This is a handy drill as it's a fault I have but only with the longer irons for some reason.
with the longer irons there is less loft so more tempation to add it via a scoop or flick. You can still use the same drill with a longer iron just not a full swing
Is that Rick looking through the glass of the door @ 1:54 ? xD
Nice man
Interesting drill Peter; alignment sticks are so useful aren't they?
I used the same basic drill to help with my close range chipping and will certainly extend it as per your vlog.
Cheers!
Genuniely believe that alignment sticks can be used to solve most of life's issues
I have to remind myself to turn before every shot, otherwise I'll do exactly what David was doing. Usually when I'm feeling rushed, i.e. groups are bunched up and people behind me are waiting, is when I'll get sloppy
Easy to forget all the basics when you're under a bit of pressure
Do you do seminars in the south ?
No plans to David!
I also use/like this drill. Call it the 'punish-er'. Get it wrong too many times & you'll see what I mean.
Same drill I use for pitching
Good stuff
I see what you mean about rotation and lag but I feel like I get good contact if I flick the club face on shorter irons. Is that just a bad habit?
it's very hard to know without seeing the swing but if the contact is good then you should be fine. The issue you could encounter is trajectory control
Also helps with keeping hands low instead of getting too far from the body.
Two tips in one :)
OUCH! This drill hurts! I for the life of me cannot not hit myself. It feels like I have to actively with so much wrist strength hold back my wrists and I am simply stiff arms with only body turn and my wrists are sore as hell
Slicefixer drill.
Second!!
Not quite, but good effort!
