Jared, I never use scent. I always set my mock licking branch at an intersection or over a well used path. I have noticed if you go the vine route , use a live vine and keep a few leaves on it. Only scent I use is urine. Its controversial but urinate on the scrape. With in days I get mature bucks hitting the vine. I have hundreds of videos to show it works. Once I started using video on my cameras its been a game changer!!

Quick tip on your zip tie bag… instead of partially opening the top and the ties spilling out in your pack, with a fresh package of ties take your knife and cut a small lateral incision in the front of the bag. When you need a tie, stick your paw in there and pinch you one out the bag. Just as quick - none of the mess!

Thanks for sharing, Jared. I watched your video, picked up some Scrape Fix, and made two mock scrapes along a couple of my travel routes and transition areas. I only have a camera on one of the scrapes but checked the camera last night after having it out for about 5 days. I couldn't believe the number of deer that came and checked it out. Does included. I have several different bucks that left their scent on the overhanging branch. This is the first year that I have experimented with mock scrapes, but I am sold!! Thanks again!!
Jared, my interest got peeked last year when I saw someone hang some hemp rope. This January I hung a few on two of my permission farms, without scents, and wanted to see how well they performed for an entire year. So far, the results have been pretty impressive. I have one more permission farm to do some season prep on this afternoon. I will be trying your method on that farm in a couple locations. Awesome video, Jared. I’ve had a ton of success with mock scrapes here in Kentucky. I was wondering if you’ll be doing a hitlist video? That was and always will be my favorite videos that Midwest whitetail posts. Excited for this season and watching for your videos along the way.

Showing everything on here can sometimes be a challenge due to the resulting increase in locals trying to move in but I also know it's part of it and the more I can share, the more interesting it is to follow. Hey Jared, Awesome Video. Give BuckStik Products a look. They are a great option for a quick and easy alternative to a DIY Mock Scrape. I see you use Smokeys... Great Stuff! We also offer a 3 pack of Pure Gland secretions so you can communicate with whitetails/mule deer how they expect to communicate. I.e. Preorbital elevated off the ground. Forehead gland in the rubbing area. and Interdigital on the ground. Again well done video!
I did this exact thing 2 weeks ago an starting making mock scrapes early like this for last 3 years now it definitely helps get an inventory of the bucks in the area through early part of the season an can be a great stand site to kill a big buck early great video kinda bitter sweet though I know not many people did this tactic early and my little secret might not be a secret in my area lol
Haha I hear ya. It's kind of like food plots. I love helping guys out with what to plant and everything else, but I still kind of hope my neighbor isn't doing what I'm doing ha

Good stuff Jared. I have always used heavy vines on all my mock scrapes because they last forever and the extra heft gives them something to rub against. If people aren't putting out mock scrapes, they are really missing out on a great way to inventory their herd.

That's what I use, natural vine, and I take tie wire and tie it in the middle and let the vine come down both sides of the branch so there's 2 they can play with, these things are cool to watch all the locals hit it, I have fawns and does wear them out right now, it's neat watching a fawn barley out of spots work a lick out of natural instinct, I have a spot I keep and deer come back to it every yr and they will maintain it, I could not count the different deer that use it
Cool video, Jared. Interesting opinion about the oak vs vine licking branch. Helps me a ton as my area is pretty vine poor! I will probably throw some of these up on Friday when I make my rounds.

Great tips Jared. The small V in the branch is a great small tip that I have definitely overlooked. That will certainly hold the licking branch much better... Oh and BTW, I'm still using Smokey's ;)

This is exactly what I’ve been doing for a # of years. Spot on. I agree with ya my first choice is a white oak branch then a Vine.
Make that branch stick out like a sore thumb.
As far as scent I just pee in the scraps and call it good.

This is a great video, Jared. I'm going to try a few mock scrapes this year and see how they perform on these weird Oklahoma deer. It's crazy how few scrapes I find in my areas that I hunt.

I've started making vine mock scrapes here in central north Carolina for past few years and I've found here in south the mature bucks will only visitmy vine mock scrapes in cover and not as much daylight activity on field edges/ woodlines where they feel vulnerable...

Awsome video Jared! 100% on Oak branches tried both vines and Oak last year and the Oak mock scrapes were on fire for me compared to the vine scrapes.
Thanks man! That's where I'm at too, but still utilize both depending on the spot.
I used both also and had activity at both but the Oak branches I used were consistently hit compared to the vines. Keep the videos comming love the tips and Goodluck this year from NC.
In my area of North Dakota we don’t have many Bur Oaks that said I will hang more vine limbs but I have in the past brought back cut oak branches to establish mock scrapes near my tree stand locations.
My problem is hunting on mostly public land anytime you sweeten up an location trl cam, mock scrape, watering holes and minerals. People notice and move in or steal cameras.
I just pee in the scrape. Never did it b4 last season. The first night my 7.5yr old target buck used it.
That's pretty cool. Yeah I don't think they're bothered by that at all.
I use code blue synthetic periorbital gland scent myself. I found using gloves {heavy hunted area} and a 3 tine rake {to clear ground in a 3-4 foot circle} work wonders for me. thanks Jared for the info.

With vines the fresher it is ( not dried up) they seem to like . Diameter 1/2 - 1” Very informative vid.
Yeah I've seen that too, especially on new scrapes. The old vines seem to work fine if they've been there for and are established but I agree on the fresh ones. Thanks for watching!
Surprised to see you take off that many leaves. I’ve always left those as I thought it helped them beeline to it sooner.
Yeah it possibly could, I'm not sure, but I just want less to blow around in front of my camera usually. Sometimes I'll leave a few leaves on there though, especially if they're more dried up and smaller.
Vanilla works great as well. Just something to get them started and they'll take it from there.

I always like to see what other people are doing. One thing that I found is that zip ties don’t last because they get brittle very quickly with the sunlight. Just a thought, I use 550 cord and it holds for years.

Use UV resistant zip ties.
Can always tell a good hunter by some of his tactics. This is almost exactly what I’ll do to a T for my mock scrapes. Only difference is I’ll typically not touch the tips of the licking end of the branch. But I’m also from PA where you have to be more finesse. In illinois I’ll just slap up my licking branch. Deer don’t care near as much in the Midwest.

It's something I've been trying out a bit more seriously, and its quite interesting to watch deer come check them out. Have you notice activity changing if the licking branch dries up ?

Thanks Jeremy, I appreciate it. I've talked about it a little but ultimately it was the career/business side of it that made me want to move on. I felt my best chance of building a career and enjoying my job was to work towards creating a position that I have control of and can grow from. A big benefit from that was that I've gotten back to truly enjoying hunting and everything that comes with it. It's amazing how our jobs can have such an impact on every aspect of life and we may not realize it. But that's probably the best way to sum it up, just a career change at the end of the day. I completely understand where youre coming from.. ive been a waterfowl/turkey guide for a lot of years, and after spring turkeys this year, I started to realize the same thing. Great video jared. How many mock scrapes should a guy put out on say 50 acres. And do you hunt over these scrapes
Thanks man. That's tough to say without knowing a little more about the property and makeup, but I wouldn't be afraid to put out at least 6 or more if you can. I wouldn't say I specifically pick spots to hunt based on scrapes, that's more based on deer movement, but I do really like to have a scrape within bow range if possible. It increases the opportunity of getting a shot and for me specifically as a self-filmer, it can give me the time I need to get things set.

Problem with real options is the spread CWD. Mixing up different fluids from different regions can cause problems. Urine the biggest spreader. Synthetic is ok, ironically the best is is your own urine. MSU has done research with it and showed deer don’t really know the difference, I’ve tried on several scrapes over years and mature deer activity goes nuts especially in early October. Licking branches is oak branches and a cedar branch. A pine branch will do also.
What’s your thoughts on hemp rope? I’ve never used it but I’ve herd good things about, and I was gonna try it this year
I've used normal rope with decent results but having tried hemp yet. I know guys seem to be having success with it. Let me know how it goes if you try it!
You can't make a mock scrape without the plastic deer hoof.
What's that silver cable plugged into the camera? Cell booster or external battery? Looks sturdy
Hey Brandon- it's an external battery, it's the 12V version from HME. And yeah, that cable is nice, definitely chew proof!
So if you use natural scent for a deer farm that possibly had cwd would you have just infected your property just wondering
Have you had any luck using posts for scrapes? If so how have you done them?
The only time I really use posts are out away from the edge, like in a field or plot. I haven't had as much luck using something like a T-post, but wooden posts have worked for me. Typically I just push them in the ground with a tract bucket or use a post hole digger. Then I use like a 1" bit to drill a hole for the licking branch. I'll usually place the branch through the hole and add a wood screw or two to secure it.

Does it .ake a difference if you leave the leaves on the licking branch?
I don't think it makes too big of a difference. For me, this time of year when the leaves are still full and big, I tend to get more false camera triggers on windy days with all the leaves blowing around so I like to trim it up.
Do you find field edges and corners do better this time of the year or deep in the woods?
Good question. I'm not 100% sure but I would say field edges/corners for me. I think the cover becomes more important as the season goes on though.
New to this so it may be a dumb question but if you have an oak branch at right level is there any reason to attach one?
Not a dumb question. If it's vertical and at the right height, you can certainly use it. I would recommend removing any other branches around it though so it really sticks out on it's own. Good luck!

Haha, to be honest I didn't even think about mentioning it, but you're right, that's probably more debatable than the scent or type of branch!
I have always whizzed in scrapes, not sure if it helps but I don't think it hurts either. I always pee out of my stand on the ground too and don't worry about it.

Do u take the bark off the bottom of the vine? I did last yr and they seemed to like the smoothness better. I havent been buying scent i been using my own brew

Commercial? I have no relationship with either ScrapeFix or Smokey's scents, just providing options that have worked for me over the years. And I agree, location is number one, as I said, but the scents definitely help them get started compared to no scents. Good luck to you too.
