How To Choose Your First RECURVE Bow, Satori 101 w/ Douglas Denton!
How To Choose Your First RECURVE Bow, Satori 101 w/ Douglas Denton!
I've enjoyed seeing the amount of interest in getting into the traditional archery world, specifically with the Satori. As a follow up to my visit to Hoyt, I connected with senior recurve engineer, Douglas Denton, to provide vital information in choosing a Satori recurve bow. We discuss the specs you should be aware of, the differences from compound bows, and more. Hope you enjoy, let me know if there's additional information you'd like to see!

    Obviously a deer farm, food plot fed deer, and you sitting in a roomy blind out of the weather, taking your pick of which deer to shoot. Not really a hunt, when compared with stillhunting wild deer on public land. Might just as well have shot a cow in the barnyard. Only redeeming factor is you shot him with a hand held bow, albeit you hit him too far back, even for a quartering away shot. Nevertheless, the mule kick was a sure sign of a fatal hit, and at "long" range.

    Just got a Satori three weeks ago. At 74 I have shot all kinds of bows. This Satori is the most consistent bow I have ever shot. I have the 17 inch with medium 40 and 35 pound limbs. Set it up with the forty maxed out at 44 lbs. shooting easton legacy with fifty grain inserts and old school Zwickey’s for a total weight of 475 grains. Like I said it’s the best recurve that I’ve ever shot.

    Traditional archery has boosted my love of archery all over. I've learned a ton and had fun playing around with different setups. Set your stands lower, always carry a field tip to shoot one practice shot before getting out of the stand. My field tip arrow also has a painted line on it marking brace height so I can continually check it. Trad bows just don't shoot the same if brace height is off.

    New subsciber, I have watched a few of your videos and really enjoy them and your style of hunting, filming. I am getting ready for the season, and have some nice bucks to hunt. Unfortunately they are not using areas with trees to hang stands from. Basically bedding in corn and feeding on beans. I am getting set up for a 120 yard muzzleloader shot, using terrain to hide in the beans. Anyway, best of luck in the coming season, looking forward to your content. From Manitoba. Allan.

    Two questions for you Jared Foliar fertilizers-what are you using? Have you tried Diesel Exhaust Fluid DEF for any plot fertilizing? It’s basically Urea as per the label, it would seem to be a very inexpensive way to get nitrogen on the ground but I have no idea on how to calculate a per acre application rate? I did use it with a homemade sprayer added to the front of each planter unit, my corn planter, my corn does look fantastic this year but it’s also been a banner weather growing year. Any thoughts you might have would be appreciated thanks

    Congrats man. I got my biggest buck almost at end of a white out at around 11:00-12am ….scored 158. Was rattling pretty much just to keep the snow off me and seen the giant come walking over from the right side. Got 5 monster buck from this one spot. Hunters don’t know what they’re missing during the break between morning and evening hunts….but it is hard to stay in their all day. I hunt mostly off the ground in archery so it gets uncomfortable although i switch up my positions but the longer you hunt you’ll notice yourself switching positions at a faster rate as more time goes by. Tree stand hunting gets uncomfortable also….need a stand where you can adjust to tilt the back towards the tree and kick up your feet almost (but not) in a laying position. Im trying to invent a cool gel seat during summer hunts and a heated gel seat during winter. You won’t believe the tree stands coming in the future, nobody has the concepts yet but they will soon. They’ll come with cell phone chargers, cameras and camera charging, they’ll be heated during winter in the back rest, the seat, and foot platform. And a lot more.

      Satori 21” riser with long limbs makes a 66” bow. I’m 31.5” dl and it’s actually one of the better bows a long armed cat can get without getting a custom bow with the poundage made to your dl. Most of the time with a lot of trad stuff it’s a crap shoot with what poundage you’re gonna end up with when you start getting over 30”. The next big issue is getting arrows long enough. There’s a few out tho. Reach out to Jared if you have any questions etc. I’ll be glad to help.

    What size limbs do you have. Do you find it catching brush and stuff while hunting on the ground or hunting outta a stand? I been really eyeing up ordering one the pass few weeks so prefect timing on the video. I'm a whitetail guy. I was lookin at the 17" riser with short limbs but after reading forum yesterday I'm thinking the 19" riser and short or medium limbs might be better

    • @jaredmills
      @jaredmills Месяц назад

      Hey Dylan, that's awesome. Good timing. I went with the 19 and Medium limbs. Obviously it's not going to work in some of the same tight spots that a compound would, but I never really found it to be too much of an issue. I just know what I have and if I need to trim and extra tree limb or two so I don't bump it, that's what I do. I think that 19/Medium combo is a good one to start with. The only other combination I'd consider would be the 17 with Long limbs. That will still give you the same length bow, but potentially a slightly better feel with those long limbs. Reach out if you have any other questions as you get into it and best of luck!

    My First recurve deer was 1967 at age 14. Howatt 62" 45lb. Funny how yardage was never a thought back then unlike today where hunters will not venture out without a range finder. Compounds were not legal here in PA until 1974. rangefiners came along much later and were about as accurate as guess in a windstorm. That first deers antlers won't even stir a kettle of soup but traditional archery pulls one into a whole slower more fulfilling experience. If I ever harvested a PY buck with a recurve they would have to call the undertaker. Be well and will look for the footage of your PY.

    • @jaredmills

      In general, the smaller the better just because you're really only relying on rain to work the seed just into the ground. Seeds such as clover, chicory, turnips, etc. When you start talking bigger seeds, those like to be a little deeper into the soil typically. Not saying you can't get decent germination out of those, but it's not going to be as good as the smaller seeds.
