It's cool how this works: Sin, lusts and whatnot may seem like your best friend, but in fact they are your worst enemy. Discipline may seem like your worst enemy, but indeed it is your best friend.
Wingnut Mcspazatron I find that disciplining myself against these traits: gluttony, lust, sloth, envy, anger, greed and pride; help me live a better overall life. You will notice your life feel like heaven on earth when you master the opposite of those 7 traits. Pride is the hardest to figure out because everyone says “take pride in your work”... pride can be good until it gets out of control and you start shaming everyone around you for not being as good as you are at the task at hand. You are meant to be like Christ and have compassion for others, not to shame them and belittle them for not being more like you. Everyone has demons or sins that they deal with and maybe the one you are shaming is a victim of Sloth. It’s like shaming someone for being spiritually ill or under Sloth attack. That is my take on pride.

Why can’t discipline be pleasurable? If you fall in love with discipline, every disciplined act becomes pleasurable because the benefits are palpable, you can smell and taste the benefits. Keep a positive mindset (e.g. be hopeful, look towards the good instead of the bad, love and accept yourself above all else unconditionally). If discipline means “I’ll never have fun again,” a person won’t do it. However, if discipline means: “I will be more reliable for my friends and family, stronger, less stressed, more positive, able to truly have fun etc. ” then it is highly likely a person will be more disciplined.
@@Theendman42 REgularly, in this world, if something - for instance, to eat - is associated with pleasure, you must definetely avoid it. That's actually the point. The pleasures you mentioned: those are the ones to be cultivated. That's for sure.

It's crazy because once you find a good disciplined routine and regiment for your life that works for you you don't want it to stop, and if you stop (at least I find) it resets. To illustrate. For the past month I had been on this really good routine and my discipline was building momentum, I was feeling good. Since I am preparing for the military I was fired up and accomplishing probably more than I ever really have. 2 days ago my best friend invited me to spend a night at his house. We drank, played videogames, and laughed our asses off, we slept until late in the night and woke up a little later than I usually would, usually I wake up at 6 AM and I'm in bed by 10 at least. Those two night I ended up spending at his house I did not study, I did not work out, nor read, It was some "time off" I thought. Came back home last night and I found myself in a completely different state of mind. It's almost as if my discipline momentum I had reset, and now I have to build it up again. Now this I don't mind at all, I think this is what Jocko means when he says that the goal should not be getting to the end of something, the goal should be doing the thing itself. Everytime your discipline, your homework, you assignments, your work, your day, your life even resets, use that as motivation to keep pushing forward and to exercise your discipline. Sorry for the bad grammar, I'm in a hurry and just wanted to pour some thoughts that came to mind while listening to this video. Will probably fix it later, maybe not, I don't care. Now go out there and GET SOME. Out
