It's cool how this works: Sin, lusts and whatnot may seem like your best friend, but in fact they are your worst enemy. Discipline may seem like your worst enemy, but indeed it is your best friend.

Wingnut Mcspazatron I find that disciplining myself against these traits: gluttony, lust, sloth, envy, anger, greed and pride; help me live a better overall life.
You will notice your life feel like heaven on earth when you master the opposite of those 7 traits.
Pride is the hardest to figure out because everyone says “take pride in your work”... pride can be good until it gets out of control and you start shaming everyone around you for not being as good as you are at the task at hand. You are meant to be like Christ and have compassion for others, not to shame them and belittle them for not being more like you. Everyone has demons or sins that they deal with and maybe the one you are shaming is a victim of Sloth. It’s like shaming someone for being spiritually ill or under Sloth attack. That is my take on pride.

If you're going to try, go all the way. Otherwise, don't even start. This could mean losing girlfriends, wives, relatives and maybe even your mind. It could mean not eating for three or four days. It could mean freezing on a park bench. It could mean jail. It could mean derision. It could mean mockery--isolation. Isolation is the gift. All the others are a test of your endurance, of how much you really want to do it. And, you'll do it, despite rejection and the worst odds. And it will be better than anything else you can imagine. If you're going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. You will be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire. You will ride life straight to perfect laughter. It's the only good fight there is.

Why can’t discipline be pleasurable? If you fall in love with discipline, every disciplined act becomes pleasurable because the benefits are palpable, you can smell and taste the benefits. Keep a positive mindset (e.g. be hopeful, look towards the good instead of the bad, love and accept yourself above all else unconditionally). If discipline means “I’ll never have fun again,” a person won’t do it. However, if discipline means: “I will be more reliable for my friends and family, stronger, less stressed, more positive, able to truly have fun etc. ” then it is highly likely a person will be more disciplined.

It's crazy because once you find a good disciplined routine and regiment for your life that works for you you don't want it to stop, and if you stop (at least I find) it resets. To illustrate. For the past month I had been on this really good routine and my discipline was building momentum, I was feeling good. Since I am preparing for the military I was fired up and accomplishing probably more than I ever really have. 2 days ago my best friend invited me to spend a night at his house. We drank, played videogames, and laughed our asses off, we slept until late in the night and woke up a little later than I usually would, usually I wake up at 6 AM and I'm in bed by 10 at least. Those two night I ended up spending at his house I did not study, I did not work out, nor read, It was some "time off" I thought. Came back home last night and I found myself in a completely different state of mind. It's almost as if my discipline momentum I had reset, and now I have to build it up again. Now this I don't mind at all, I think this is what Jocko means when he says that the goal should not be getting to the end of something, the goal should be doing the thing itself. Everytime your discipline, your homework, you assignments, your work, your day, your life even resets, use that as motivation to keep pushing forward and to exercise your discipline. Sorry for the bad grammar, I'm in a hurry and just wanted to pour some thoughts that came to mind while listening to this video. Will probably fix it later, maybe not, I don't care. Now go out there and GET SOME. Out

He's right about the bulk of things but discipline alone will not save you. It's only one trait of the character of God, a very important trait, but just one trait nonetheless. You guys that "religiously" follow Jocko and his advice have essentially created another religion, similar to how Buddhism worships one of God's character traits: presence. The real answer is not discipline, presence, or any other trait but it's God, it's JESUS. Worship God and if it's his will for you to develop a high level of discipline to accomplish whatever he wants you to do, then you will do it, if you fully submit.

I was just thinking today why in the fuck would there be a lazy, negative voice in my head every time I want to do anything challenging, just pulling me back and creating excuses like mad. And then I remembered Jordan Peterson's remark on how you're not just an intellectual being, you're more like an iceberg made of ancient automated processes which all have voices and desires and your intellectual and logical part is just the visible tip of that iceberg. So you need to recognize how and why these impulses are created, and master them, because sometimes your brain is telling you to lay down for a reason. On the other hand, if not checked, these impulses can completely take you over.

The more you exercise your discipline, it will become easier to live a good live and easier to prevent living a bad life, so there is no reason not to utilize it. A second of bliss is greater than a lifetime of nothing, or even worse, suffering.

Some other channel has this exact clip with cheezy music, and it's got three times the amount of view of this one, which seems like bullshit to me. Do those guys have to pay Jocko for using his stuff?? If not, then fuck those people.
Anyways, love this clip. I put Jocko clips on Loop and have it playing in the background over and over to help me get through the day. Jocko is THE man.
PS "The easy path that calls to us..." story of most of my life sad to say. But never too late to turn the ship around.

I'm terrified of getting punched in the face, so I signed up for kickboxing and had my first class yesterday.
Got punched because I didn't block, and I'm going back today.

Discipline is the practice of training people to obey rules or a code of behaviour, using punishment to correct disobedience.

Fuck this always waking up early bullshit. If I have to catch up on sleep to maintain a healthy brain and body, I will. My productivity is WAYY better when I'm well rested.

Who said you have to get up early. I woke up at 5:45 every morning for 10+ years. Then I decided I'm not doing that anymore. I didn't like it and felt like I was being controlled. I wake up when my body wakes me up. Sometimes it's early sometimes it's 10am. I'm just saying that if you think that's how you stay disciplined, I don't agree. I'm very disciplined and still make money the same If I woke at the butt crack of dawn with the rest of the slaves. Free yourself.
