    "New York, where the big money and opportunity were. The city of lights. The door to fame and fortune. At least, that's what I thought." - When Jack Dempsey arrived in New York in 1916 with less than $30 and 26 KO's under his belt, he was met with opposition from every corner. His manager set him up with a fight against Andre Anderson, a ferocious heavyweight that nobody else wanted to fight. Upon seeing the 173lbs Jack Dempsey, the athletic club owner shouted for Dempseys manager. "Price! Where is that son-of-a-bitch? Price! What the hell is the matter with you? I oughtta put you in jail for allowing this kid to fight Anderson. Why he'll get murdered!". Anderson weighed 215 lbs and looked heavier. Dempsey was knocked down several times, and as they were debating whether to stop the fight Dempsey roared back. By the end of the fight Anderson was trying to get away from Dempseys ferociousness. Dempsey went on to win and as time went by he found himself alone without any money in the impersonal New York City. Once standing alone in a hallway and feeling dejected he was approached by Damon Runyon who told him not to give up. Runyon gave him the name the "Manassa Mauler" and the rest is history. Also Runyon gave the name "Cinderella Man" to Jimmy Braddock, and while Runyon was dying of cancer many boxers including Sugar Ray Robinson gathered together to give their fight purses to help him. Beauty of boxing.

    Note: I did not colorize this footage. This footage was colorized by a firm called Composite Films for a documentary aired by The Smithsonian called "America in Color." I highly recommend watching it if you are into history and film restoration. They did a fantastic job.
    I am working on my own colorized projects separate from this. I did do some minor touch ups, and fixes. I hope you guys enjoy it, thank you for your incredible comments, and remember to keep on punching!

Also very interesting to see the style of that era... hordes of men wearing blazers and fedoras, old fashioned boxing equipment... the old architecture... seeing it in color makes this video feel like a time capsule for those who've never experienced this era. Great, so Tunney is ranked higher than Dempsey right? Beat him twice. So much for long count. Tunney had 1 loss against the great Greb . The a draw and 3 savage beat downs . Retired as unbeaten heavyweight champ. Twice lightheavyweight champ. Fewer losses than Johnson, Dempsey, Louis, Ali, Frazier, Norton ,Forman, Holmes, Tyson ,and the Ukrainian brother's. Only heavyweight with a better record? Marciano. Dempsey was great,Tunney was better.

      @@PorterJustPorter Marciano, mike Tyson, and Jack Dempsey are cut from the same cloth. It’s just that Dempsey and Tyson never had the discipline and resolve Marciano had. He was as gracious a host as he was ferocious in the ring. Today's athletes could learn a lot about compartmentalizing hyper competitiveness with being a gracious gentleman off the field of play. I see that today in only a few renowned athletes, Tom Brady being one of them.

    This man came from struggle in a city where no one gets out and he made a legend out of himself, god bless your struggle and work ethic when you had so little but put out so much. Jack Dempsey rep for manassa Colorado

    It’s awesome to see you finally have over 20k subs. No offense to other boxing channels, but Reznick is iconic and timeless. It’s baffling to me that you don’t have at least 200k subs.

    Fearsome Irish-Scottish-Cherokee warrior! Savage and sweet, Dempsey was a true champion with the heart of a lion.

    • @АлтайскийКазак
      @АлтайскийКазак 4 года назад +2

      That would explain the partially Mongoloid phenotype that he had. I'm Russian, Mongolian, and Indigenous Siberian Chukchi (as far as I know, never taken ancestry test), but the Cherokee are descendants of my ancestors, as we both come from east Asian tribes living in north eastern Siberia. Circular orbitals, a flatter more wide set face and nose, and epicanthal folds seemed a bit strange for a man I only knew was English.

      Joe Louis also part Cherokee

      @@АлтайскийКазак Not English, Irish & Scottish (the bulk of Dempsey's ancestry!). Though superb descriptions!

    65 years ago Dempsey sent me his autograph & Gene Tunney not long after. I eventually gave away an entire boxing library but kept the Dempsey photo. Years later I learned someone signed for him & got rid of it.

      I figure Jack stole the lunge up style from Sam Langford. It can max hitting power = very good for street fighting one on one.
