    Max was staying in a hotel when he suffered a heart attack. He managed to ring reception and ask for a doctor. The desk clerk said; " Do you want a house doctor? " and Max replied; " No, I want a people doctor! " Then he died, joking to the last. What a man!

    Max Baer was long gone from this earth when the Braddock movie was made. But in reality you're right Max Baer was a good man.

    • @badnewsBH
      @badnewsBH 7 лет назад +63

      I really think it's a shame the film people made Max into a villain. From what I hear, he nearly quit the sport after Campbell died from his onslaught; Baer was apparently devastated, certainly not showing off about it.

    • @iconadams
      @iconadams 6 лет назад +63

      Ron Howard blew that movie. The story line was Good (Braddock) vs Evil (Baer); that was manufactured, for Max Baer was one of the funniest, irreverent, and good-humored champions ever. The story line that Howard should have followed is this: Mega-talented champ (Max Baer) whose natural attributes make things easy for him, doesn't take his training and boxing seriously and so loses to the minimally-talented, but ultra-tough, hard-working, and serious-minded underdog, James Braddock. Lesson-learned: hard-work achieves, while natural-talent alone is typically not enough. Max Baer was a helluva guy: everyone loved his fun personality, but especially the ladies. What a character. One last thought: some of you don't like the music Reznick chose for Max, but I think it is perfect; for if Max were boxing today, he'd be a media-star and an absolute wildman known the world over.

      Joe Berger Boxing was very different back then. Baer actually almost quit boxing after he killed Frankie Campbell. It fucked him up so bad that he lost 4 out of his next 6 fights because he was afraid to go all out. That's when he started clowning around. He obviously got his killer instinct back, but he never became the fighter that he could have been. He also supported Campbell's kids all the way up to paying for their college educations, AND he also paid all of Primo Carnera's hospital bills after he demolished him in the ring. He was very generous.

Max Bear here and all th guys back then were going 15 rounds and that meant you had to be fresh in round 15, cool down rounds didn't even exist, modern boxers a exhausted by round 6 - 8. Look at the accuracy of Bear and his opponents here, it is much higher than modern fighters and their volume is much higher too. What is it that modern fighters do better?

      15 rounds were rare in heavyweight. the greatest champs got and lost their titles in less than 10 rounds (liston, frazier, foreman). in modern times with 12 rounds vitali klitschko went the distance 4 times in all of his fights, deontay wilder even only once. and though champions only fight twice a year and not 6 times like in 1930-1960, some are in perfect shape throughout their career till their 40s which proves that there are still boxers training hard and watching their nutrition throughout the year. @@Alex-cw3rz

He squandered what skills he had with a lot of heavy partying, smoking, and not training as earnestly as he should have. Quite the personality- and a deadly right hand puncher. Baer's reputation was that of a playboy, a party animal. A person who didn't take boxing very seriously. Yet every time I watch these old fight films, I never see him as being out of shape. He always appeared to have that chiseled body. So I'm thinking that reputation must have been highly exaggerated.
    Maybe he fooled most people because he always liked to play to the camera and act as a goofball, because when it came to training and getting in shape, physically he certainly did not look

    The only time I saw him scared was when he fought Joe Louis.. maybe not.. but he definitely fought more tentatively.. or he just wasn't right for that fight.. he destroyed Max Schmeling... and Schmeling destroyed Joe Louis in their first fight.. different mindsets for different fighters.. I honestly think some fighters just have the other guys number or a mental edge for some reason.. how else can you explain underdog upsets.. and the he beat the guy who beat the guy but lost to the guy he lost to..or something like that...that confused me too.. sorry.

      He went into that fight with shambles of what resembled his right hand...He insisted on having the fight even though the doctor said his hands would rather he never fight again. His doctor said if he truely felt he had to fight then he would get permission to give him a shot to numb his right hand (which was a fair bit worse than his left), he got permission but when he gave it to baer the fight was delayed by rain...By the time the fight started the anesthetic was mostly worn off and baer had to fight joe with a right hand that felt like it was full of shards of glass everytime it hit something and a chipped left knuckle. Your body will literally stop you from hitting with a broken hand, its like biting through your tongue; you technically could do it easily but your mind makes it impossible.

    Interesting side note about Max: A year before he fought Carnera for the title- he fought a "mock" fight against him in the movie- "The Prizefighter and The Lady". It ended in a draw.In 1956- he played a fighter named Buddy Brannen (who was modeled on Baer) in "The Harder They Fall". He fought a character based on Primo Carnera. It was Humphrey Bogart's last film.
