Liston was respected as a fighter until his two fights with Ali in 64 and 65. In the first fight, he gave up his heavyweight title sitting on his stool when he refused to continue after the sixth round. It was outrageous to just give up and quit in the middle of a title fight. Everyone watching fight including Ali thought Liston threw the fight and they were right. That was it for Liston. He lost respect completely as a fighter..

He was pretty old when he got famous, nobody, even himself, know his true age. Even the latest estimates say he was born in 1930 and even that would put him at 34 when he faced Ali, 12 years older then Ali and at that same age Ali was already nearing the end of his career (Ali's last real boxing match was at age 39). Jerry Smith,if the boxing business had been straight,,honest and unfettered by crooks Charles Sonny Liston would have been Heavyweight Champion of the world from about 1956 til 1970 when his rumoured old age began to stifle his powers. When he died, months after his last fight with Chuck Wepner,Wepner said up close Liston had the look of a 50 year old man.Wepner also stated that his fight with Sonny was the most brutal fight he had ever experienced and the only time any boxer had ever hurt him.Chuck went straight to hospital from the ring and spent 3 days on a drip as his body had gone into shock from the beating Liston had given him.Clay/ Ali beat Liston .......????,not according to Chuck and he should know as he fought both of them.
Sonny for me was the greatest fighter of any generation. I got told a story many many years ago that he was in a syndicate with a Colombian Cartel that had gone badly wrong and as he wasn't anywhere near fit enough to fight Ali he took a back hander to loose. His death had been on the cards for over 7 months as he couldn't cope without fighting and his drinking and herion abuse were legendary in the back street bars he frequented. I was lucky enough to meet him once as a very young boy and he became my hero. What do you say today " it's not the win in the fight but the fight in the win" He will always be for me the greatest

What was truly sad is that when Liston became champion in 1962 he arrived back to Philadelphia expecting to see a crowd of supporters at the airport. Nobody showed up. According to those close to Liston that 'snub' hurt him deeply and only made him resent the press and especially Philadelphia even more.
They had a lot of freaking powerful punchers back then, Shavers, Lile, Norton, Frazier, Foreman, just to name a few. But Liston was the most intimidating ever, makes me glad i fought as a cruiserweight.
He had such a sad face; but when you find out what he went through you can understand why. People that knew him said that his toughness and mean demeaner were to protect himself from the snakes and the media, but that he was really a kind soul who would do anything for you and he loved children because they never judged him.
Sonny Liston life is so gut wrenching to me. Seeing in some of that old footage the sadness behind his eyes. He was a great man and I really wish he got to live a better life.

Many talk dismissively about the Patterson victories stating that the mismatch was purely due to weight difference. People forget that Patterson regularly fought fighters who outweighed him and still no one else could crush him like Liston did. Twice.
I've never been huge into fighting or boxing, but something seriously special and genuine resides in Sonny, regardless of the troubles and crime. Something truly unique.
He is so under appreciated, this man was a true once in a sport type of guy. Judge him for what he did in the ring not the things that led him there. Mr Liston rest in peace brother

@DrMonkeyBoyJr actually no he didn't he changed it to Cassius x but he told everyone to call him Muhammad Ali. He never legally changed his name to Muhammad ali
I can't believe how people misjudge the guy. He never really wanted to be known as a savage beast. People who thought that should've seen him struggling to sign his name for little children. America should be ashamed of the way it treated one of it's greatest fighters.
Remember George saying in an interview that Liston has the longest arms of any boxer he had seen. His reach therefore was very unpredictable and could catch you cold.

Great job yet again Rez, I've always been a fan of Liston and he never seems to get the respect and credit he deserves for being as great a heavyweight as he was. This video really does justice in showcasing his aura of intimidation and insane power. And I loved the editing with the back to back clips of his lethal jab!
Brilliantly edited Reznick!!!! Excellent choice of music and timing of footage material. Watching your videos is like watching a movie. If Sonny was around today he would run a truck over anybody. Thanks for sharing!
Liston used to make opponents faint and piss themselves in the dressing room prior the fight.. his opponents who made it to the ring would sometimes take a glance at ringside and see the mafia and become numb as if they had just been paralyzed by a snake-bite, they would look up and see liston with steam coming from his ears like a raging bull coming straight at them to take there head off. His best friends were in the mafia who attended every fight to cheer him on and show him support. Liston was the most intimidating fighter in history, that is no joke.
A few guys went the distance with him. You've got to admire that because it wasn't easy. Eddie Machen was one of them. Cleveland Williams was a tall, slender heavyweight and a dangerous puncher but he was stopped twice by Liston. Patterson should never have gotten into the ring with Liston. Cus D'Amato warned Patterson not to fight Liston but Patterson was not a coward and felt obligated to face Liston who had been the number one contender for a couple years. Amazingly, Patterson's boxing career continued mostly successfully after he got knocked out twice by Liston.
There's always something mesmorizing about such raw power throwing text book punches to that relentless rhythm and beating down his fellow man. Liston was simply fierce in that ring.

Even the latest estimates say he was born in 1930 and even that would put him at 34 when he faced Ali, 12 years older then Ali and at that same age Ali was already nearing the end of his career (Ali's last real boxing match was at age 39). The highest estimates though put Liston at age _45_ which was the same age when Foreman took back his championship belt and he had been considered an "old man" and "washed up" by all the boxing experts years prior. It's insane.
Nah he was probably 33-35 when he fought Ali. A few years older than his official age. No way he was over 40 during the Patterson fights, probably more like early 30's
@@jegr3398 the Encyclopedia Britannica had Liston fighting under the name Charles “Sailor” Liston when he was 17 - in 1934, when he was supposed to be 2 years old.
His grave plaque says 1932 - 1970 . That would make him 10 yrs older then Ali .
@@mr.majestic2667 because not even sonny knew when he was born. No records were kept. But he was definitely born before 1930. Somewhere between 1922-27

Ali could not whip Sonny in a fair straight up match !
@Jefferson Davis lol Boxing not about hurting it art form lol fornman is will eat liston alive
To this day the best Sonny Liston edit ive seen
"The longer it takes, the sweeter it is."
Hope you guys enjoy this one.

Yes
He had such a sad face; but when you find out what he went through you can understand why. People that knew him said that his toughness and mean demeaner were to protect himself from the snakes and the media, but that he was really a kind soul who would do anything for you and he loved children because they never judged him.
Well said.

King of the beasts
King of the Beast?
Liston used to make opponents faint and piss themselves in the dressing room prior the fight.. his opponents who made it to the ring would sometimes take a glance at ringside and see the mafia and become numb as if they had just been paralyzed by a snake-bite, they would look up and see liston with steam coming from his ears like a raging bull coming straight at them to take there head off. His best friends were in the mafia who attended every fight to cheer him on and show him support. Liston was the most intimidating fighter in history, that is no joke.
A VERY great heavyweight, maybe the most powerful ever. Very misunderstood and obviously taken advantage of.
RIP sonny a kind and gentle man. He really had a smile that could light up a room
