Liston was respected as a fighter until his two fights with Ali in 64 and 65. In the first fight, he gave up his heavyweight title sitting on his stool when he refused to continue after the sixth round. It was outrageous to just give up and quit in the middle of a title fight. Simply unheard of. In the second fight, He quit by laying down in the first round after Ali hit him with a short right hand. Everyone watching fight including Ali thought Liston threw the fight and they were right. That was it for Liston. He lost respect completely as a fighter..

@@blackhoodie4170 you've clearly never boxed. Bulky legs slow you down. Also Ali was the size of a cruiserweight and he had a lot of fast twitch muscles in his legs. The size of them didn't determine his speed. Balance isn't achieved through bulkiness. Look at AJ, huge thickset legs but they turn to jelly very quickly when he's hurt. Not to mention how much easier it is to damage big bulky muscles so you're more likely to injure big legs like that. Plus Ali has normal legs, not too big, not too skinny. The size of your legs aren't that important in boxing. It's how you move them and keep your balance.

Liston was no "Angel" & he was an enforcer for Blinky Palermo & Frank Carbo. They provided Sonny with $ when he got out of prison in 1953.
I know that not only did the Media hate him but JFK didn't want Patterson fighting against Liston because of his Mob connections.
Sonny was beaten badly by his demented & alcoholic father so he left home at an early age with only a 4th grade education.
Under perfect circumstances Sonny would have had a chance to beat Ali! Sonny had the biggest hands at 15 in. with an 84 in. reach which is insane.

My wife and I used to argue all the time about the things we watch: I keep bitching about her crying over TV shows and movies, and she keeps wondering why I make such a fuzz over “just some half naked dudes beating each other”.
She even came to some of my amateur fights, and besides worrying about my health, she came no closer to understanding why people gather to watch other people train or compete. It was pointless to try to explain to her why I love this sport so much, why I admire some fighters the way I do, and how they inspire me to be a better version of myself, just by “getting half naked and beating other poor bastard”.
That is, until I began showing her some of Reznick’s masterpieces. I’ve yet to see any other boxing rendition that captures and transmits the essence of the sport and its protagonists half as good as our man Reznick does on a regular basis. This video is no different, just pure emotion.

Jerry Smith,if the boxing business had been straight,,honest and unfettered by crooks Charles Sonny Liston would have been Heavyweight Champion of the world from about 1956 til 1970 when his rumoured old age began to stifle his powers. When he died, months after his last fight with Chuck Wepner,Wepner said up close Liston had the look of a 50 year old man.Wepner also stated that his fight with Sonny was the most brutal fight he had ever experienced and the only time any boxer had ever hurt him.Chuck went straight to hospital from the ring and spent 3 days on a drip as his body had gone into shock from the beating Liston had given him.Clay/ Ali beat Liston .......????,not according to Chuck and he should know as he fought both of them.

Sonny for me was the greatest fighter of any generation. I got told a story many many years ago that he was in a syndicate with a Colombian Cartel that had gone badly wrong and as he wasn't anywhere near fit enough to fight Ali he took a back hander to loose. His death had been on the cards for over 7 months as he couldn't cope without fighting and his drinking and herion abuse were legendary in the back street bars he frequented.
I was lucky enough to meet him once as a very young boy and he became my hero.
What do you say today " it's not the win in the fight but the fight in the win" He will always be for me the greatest

I don't believe the Ali fights were legitimate. Furthermore Ali showed his true character by harassing Liston and his family. Liston is the real MVP

GREAT VIDEO!! Usually I hate boxing vids with over dubbed music, but this just worked for me!! Also, sonny's skipping footwork was astonishing to see. Great fighter, very scary and he is much missed.

Great job yet again Rez, I've always been a fan of Liston and he never seems to get the respect and credit he deserves for being as great a heavyweight as he was. This video really does justice in showcasing his aura of intimidation and insane power. And I loved the editing with the back to back clips of his lethal jab!

Brilliantly edited Reznick!!!! Excellent choice of music and timing of footage material. Watching your videos is like watching a movie. If Sonny was around today he would run a truck over anybody. Thanks for sharing!

Liston used to make opponents faint and piss themselves in the dressing room prior the fight.. his opponents who made it to the ring would sometimes take a glance at ringside and see the mafia and become numb as if they had just been paralyzed by a snake-bite, they would look up and see liston with steam coming from his ears like a raging bull coming straight at them to take there head off. His best friends were in the mafia who attended every fight to cheer him on and show him support. Liston was the most intimidating fighter in history, that is no joke.

A VERY great heavyweight, maybe the most powerful ever. Very misunderstood and obviously taken advantage of.

  • @pukulu
    @pukulu 4 года назад +11

A few guys went the distance with him. You've got to admire that because it wasn't easy. Eddie Machen was one of them. Cleveland Williams was a tall, slender heavyweight and a dangerous puncher but he was stopped twice by Liston. Patterson should never have gotten into the ring with Liston. Cus D'Amato warned Patterson not to fight Liston but Patterson was not a coward and felt obligated to face Liston who had been the number one contender for a couple years. Amazingly, Patterson's boxing career continued mostly successfully after he got knocked out twice by Liston.

There's always something mesmorizing about such raw power throwing text book punches to that relentless rhythm and beating down his fellow man. Liston was simply fierce in that ring.

Amazing work! Can't give you enough praise. Phenomenal clips, editing, music, AND an appreciation for boxing history? What did we do to deserve you, Reznick? I just binged your videos and subbed. Keep up the great work. PS: My unpopular opinion is that Sonny is the #2 HW of all time.

3:50 I would’ve loved to see Liston use that stare on Tyson. I remember hearing Tyson talk about how once he saw a man break their gaze from him, he knew he’d have them. Liston wouldn’t have broken that stare

    • @philsymes

Tyson could not deal with an old washed up Evander's stare.
Prime Liston would have made him shit his oh so menacing black trunks.
