Nice list , Vee ! I agree with most of it. I would flip flop Candy O and Panarama and I really like the song Double Trouble from Door to Door . I think my fav Cars song ever would be All mixed up. Keep up the good work and i look forward to seeing more vids!
Excellent commentary! Good description of the band dynamics, how they each play a part that first and foremost serves the song. I share your love for Elliot Easton. He laid down so many absolutely perfect little solos. Your rating for Door to Door is too nice! 😝Anyway, loved the video and I appreciate you going the extra mile to review the solo stuff!
The Cars , like the Stranglers and the Band , benefit from having a keyboard player who is the secret weapon for the group. Greg Hawkes , ( like Dave Greenfield for the Stranglers , and Garth Hudson for the Band ) , elevates the level of every song that he plays on . Your ranking is an interesting one . I'd be interested in seeing your top 10 songs for the Cars . Anyway , here's my ranking , starting with my favourite : Heartbeat City. (. It's Not the Night is a particular favourite of mine ) The Cars Candy - O Shake It Up Panorama Move Like This Door to Door Based on your comments regarding Panorama , I must explore that one some more . Thanks !!!
All Mixed Up is one of my favorite songs ever, and I rarely see it talked about even in the context of the album! 7) Door to Door - ★★½ 6) Move Like This - ★★★ 5) Panorama - ★★★½ 4) Shake It Up - ★★★★ 3) Heartbeat City - ★★★★ 2) Candy-O - ★★★★½ 1) The Cars - ★★★★★
OK, you've convinced me to give Panorama another shot. "Touch and Go" I do like but always considered it a "lesser" Cars song. When I was young and first heard it, I thought the "rockabilly" segment totally ruined the vibe they had going from the beginning of the song, repetitive as it was. Today, I'm more forgiving and I do enjoy it.
Here are the notes I posted on the TLM (then Listography) video from 4 years ago. And now to watch your video!! 07) Door to Door (2 stars) 06) Panorama (2 1/2 stars) 05) Move Like This (3 stars) 04) Heartbeat City (4 stars) 03) Shake It Up (4 stars) 02) The Cars (5 stars) 01) Candy-O (5 stars) My top two were neck and neck but ultimately I chose my personal favorite. I love every track on Candy-O and it's got two more than the debut. The debut is a stone cold classic, but I consider "I'm in Touch with Your World" to be a less than great song which renders the album to be less than perfect (still waiting for Listography - mainly Joe and Kramzer - to comment on this song and defend the notion that the debut is indeed "perfect.") [EDIT - in comments, Joe said every song on an album does not need to be perfect for the album to be perfect. I'm not so sure about that lolol] Shake It Up and Heartbeat City were also neck and neck, but I ultimately decided I like the deep cuts on Shake It Up more and the first two cuts are classic Cars. Hearing Move Like This again for the first time in several years made me appreciate it a bit more. Panorama just doesn't have much in the way of hooks and Door to Door is pretty awful. It is so light and limp it is almost easy listening. The only song on it I really like is "Strap Me In." I'm with Jason on that one.
My favorite pool of music is brainy new-wave/post-punk: XTC, Cars, Devo, Suburban Lawns, early They Might Be Giants, Split Enz, Cardiacs... what a fruitful time
Top 10 Cars songs: 10) Don't Cha Stop 09) Best Friend's Girl 08) Shoo Be Doo/Candy-O 07) Double Life 06) Moving in Stereo 05) Since You're Gone 04) Let's Go 03) Dangerous Type 02) Just What I Needed 01) Good Times Roll Kinda betrays the fact that the debut probably should be my number 1. It's just played so much more than Candy-O. But honestly, like you, I never get sick of it.
For some reason, there are many bands whose first four albums are their best albums, and for me, The Cars are no different. The Cars were trendsetters on their first four, even though Heartbeat City was a huge seller, it seemed to me like they began chasing trends, rather than expanding their own identity. Panorama is an under rated classic, it received the kind of reaction that Weezer's sophomore release Pinkerton received. Check out Powerman 5000's cover Candy-O and Fu Manchu's cover of Moving In Stereo, good stuff!
The Cars debut album is one of the best debut albums of all time. From a production standpoint, Heartbeat City is epic. The song Drive is probably their best. I agree with other comments with All Mixed Up is a hidden gem.
After heartbeat city (brilliant title track - pure 80's!) disappeared from the charts, the cars seemed to quickly fade from the spotlight. Bands like that were overshadowed by hair metal and rap...not to mention Madonna and MJ. Consequently, it took me 25 years to get around to door to door. It's basically the quiet, gentle follow-up to the much punchier previous hit album. My first impression was that it was a 'weak' album and kind of bland compared to their earlier stuff...but it grew on me. Strap me in is classic Cars...leave or stay, you are the girl and double trouble are solid tracks, while several others also make my playlist. I also like the production by Ocasek. Not a classic album by any stretch, but Door To Door is definitely deserving of more love, especially from fans of 80's music. 🎶👍

Yes one of the greatest debut albums ever

Haha, certainly can't hurt! Thanks as always, Rich!
