No Tapestry ?
Great video and very considered analysis - thanks. Really enjoyed listening to your critique. My first live gig was T.Rex in Manchester (UK) in 1972 and saw them 3 more times after that. Marc was a phenomenal performer, poet and musician - and also a really nice guy. The 'arrogance' he sometimes displayed in interviews ("I sold half a million records this week" type of thing) was largely tongue in cheek and a repost to 'cool' critics in the UK music press (NME especially) who could not see past his mass appeal to teenage fans and lumped him with other teen idols of the time (though there is no doubt he revelled in his stardom and the T Rextasy that gripped the UK for a couple of years!). But time has proven that his songs, his sound, melodies, lyrics and image have endured and remain influential to this day. So many cite him as an influence and remain fans. And not to overlook the huge contribution of producer Tony Visconti to the overall quality and impact of albums such as Electric Warrior, The Slider etc. So thanks again for your contribution on RUclips. As for rankings - changes every day for me but I would place Unicorn at 4 - so beautiful to listen to with a glass of red wine late at night and disappear into that Tolkeinesque world, and maybe I'd bump Zinc Alloy down the list instead. Top 3 - can't disagree with.
Mott a good one, Allmans. Brothers and Sisters, Skynyrd debut, Layla, Houses of the holy, it was one of rocks best years.
Were you alive in 1973?
No, not yet. Born in the 80s
Zip Gun is Bolan's worst Album by a country mile. The four Album run from the brown album (T.Rex) to Tanx was his best work. I find it difficult to choose between Slider and Electric Warrior as my favourite.
I haven't watched this video yet but you must never dirch any LP by Cocteau Twins. You will not only regret it, you will lose sleep and you will soon after notice your life has lost all purpose and that is something you should beware of.
I am definitely a fan of their pre-disco era. Although I did live through that era there are very few songs I can tolerate!
What does Zoe think of the Beegees and your review? I enjoyed your review of the book and their albums.
She thinks they're pretty good but she's not big on Barry's falsetto, too much for her sensitive ears.
@LetItVee I guess that’s why we all are different. I absolutely LOVED Main Course, Children of the world, and Spirits. Those were my absolute favorites. I also liked ESP & Still Waters. But those 3 I listed were my absolute favorites. You can also add the Fever Soundtrack. Now I am not really a fan of Odessa and that era, except for To Love Somebody. My tastes tend to lean towards R&B/soul so that’s why I love them from around 1973-80 the most. That’s the time they were also played on the soul radio stations too, and that’s how I was I was introduced to them. Plus, Barry was very handsome, which didn’t hurt!❤ My favorite songs from them are (in no particular order). Too Much Heaven How Deep is your love Jive Talking Fanny be Tender Love so Right You Win Again Staying Alive How Can you mend a broken heart More than a woman Nights on Broadway Wind of Change Run to Me You Should be Dancing Nothing could be Good My Lover’s prayer So those span a lot of albums. Once I got into their music, I started expanding my listening of them and I do like other songs that I didn’t think I would. One of the best “lyrical” country songs is Rest Your Love on me awhile That’s beautiful. And who would have thought I would like something like that coming from my background 🤣. So their music has opened my eyes.
That's the great thing about their catalogue is that they have so much variety to offer! Thanks for sharing your experience with them!
great review V , i still have to do odessa for 1969 , the length scared me away lol
Great review V! I think you’ve given me some inspiration for my Mum’s Christmas present!
Very cool. I don’t know anything about them. 🎉
Great book review. I also prefer their earlier material. Take care!
🤛👊🤜
I just listened to a bit of it on YT and wasn't that impressed.
My favorite album is Selling England by the Pound.
I'm a huge "Surf Wax America" fan!
Looking forward to watching this and seeing what you have picked up 😊
Modern Vampires... Favorite album of 2013! STP, Supergrass, Nick Drake, Macca, M. Ward. Oh man! Totally makes sense why I'm here. :) TY
when i was young my brother took me too see kris kristofferson and rita coolidge, and billy swan [i can help] robin trower is my AOTY for 1974 and of course marquee moon is a fantastic 5 star album
Great haul! Thank you for sharing. 🎶
I love Supergrass but I’ve struggled to get into “Road to Rouen”. Maybe a few more listens are needed!
🤞
Nice you got around to loving The Lamb🐑
It's interesting that no two people I've heard from rank the Zeppelin albums the same way. I have always loved Presence, and I'm glad you give "Tea for One" its due. Nice discussion on what you regard as the high and low points of the albums. I personally put I, II, III, IV (yes, that one is my favorite) and Presence in S-tier and the other studio albums (plus Coda) in A-tier.
Never cared for STP or Pearl Jam. Just sounded like bombastic, overly serious anthem rock. Took themselves too seriousy, esp. Vedder. Never got what was so good about Lowe. I tried, but he was better as a producer, imo. "Dummy" is brilliant. Always found TMBG to be waayyy too 'quirky college rock cutesy' crud. Meat Puppets were ok. Used to listen to Pavement back then, not now. Pollard is a low-fi lyrical freak who can really get ya w/ an earwhig. I'll be nice & not mention my thoughts on weezer. But that's a fantastic pick for #1. Still can't believe he threw it away in that damn river, cuz he was a phenomenal talent as a guitarist and vocalist, which such potential two write & record more brilliant albums.
Holy shitsnacks, you know The Pains of Being Pure At Heart?! So good! I saw them in Prague at this wacked out club call The Meet Factory. You had to take a tram (if not driving), get off at a stop in industrial morass, climb under this fence, cross the railroad tracks, and make it up this steep rise to get to the club. But it was worth it. Also saw Beach House there.
Sounds awesome! I would have loved to have seen them!
Love the shirt, and "Village Green..." in the background. I'd say chuck the whole lot. Agreed on the 1st 'Til Tuesday album. "Welcome Home" is easily better, imo. The Beat have some very good tunes, but I'm w/ you in how few there really are. I might keep those, or just rip the songs I like and sell the CDs. Clapton was always more interesting as part of a unit than as a solo act, and that has to be the take of the great majority of us who enjoy his work in general.
Great list, i would add Panic On by Madder Rose and Palomine by Bettie Serveert ❤
I am totally on the same page as you with that Jewel album too. I got it when it came out as well and it was so bad. My mom listened to it in the car with me and she said that those were some of the worst lyrics she ever heard. I had to agree!
i went through a babes in toyland phase myself , but i dont ever go back to them
If I'm in "clean out mode", I try to be quick and ruthless about it, if I take the time to listen to it "just in case", I'll never get rid of anything haha!
Can't believe you're ditching I Just Can't Stop It! lol...I think "Twist and Crawl" and "Best Friend" are also great, aside from "Mirror."
"Should It Stay Or Should It Go" sounds like my ongoing project for the past year. I have small stacks of CDs to revisit, most of which I'm probably going to cut loose. As far as your choices go, let me start by saying that I love both English Beat albums, particularly Special Beat Service. To me, they were the cream of the Two-Tone movement. The Eric Clapton album doesn't surprise me, since I don't think he's done much of anything worth hearing since 461 Ocean Blvd. Jewel struck me as a parity of the painfully earnest folkie with little to say, which earned her an SNL skit. And as far as country goes, I would recommend you check out After Awhile, by Jimmie Dale Gilmore. He's a Texas cowboy songwriter whose songs convey a certain intimacy and beauty, sometimes touching on eastern spirituality. And his voice is unique, different from any country singer I've ever heard. Enjoying your videos.
Thank you! I am not familiar with Jimmie Dale GIlmore so I will have to check him out, sounds intriguing.
@@LetItVee Yes, he is. Hope you enjoy the album, which was released back around '90 or so. He also had a part in The Big Lebowski, a bowling alley scene.
Good video, I think I agree with most of what you said, glad you kept the 'til tuesday cd, but I don't agree with your opinion on Jewel. I really love her work! I also bought her second album when it came out and I loved it, plus her third and fourth albums, and one or two others as well plus her Christmas cd. I guess each to their own though.... I think her third album was called This Way, and I'd recommend that one in particular.
I actually really liked that Mary Chapin Carpenter album, it is a light 4 stars for me, even though it is out of my wheelhouse. I also kind of liked the Ben Harper album, even though I haven't listen to it in a bit and he has few albums that I like better. The only other album I listened to in it's entirety is the Jewel album. It has been awhile, but from my recollection it was mid. Most of the other albums I knew some songs off the album but never listened to the entire album. The song "Voices Carry" is a banger.
My guess is $32 in store credit. Was I close? Keep us posted. 2 albums I could never attempt to offload: Village Green and A Hard Day’s Night. :)
I'd love to get $32 store credit for these haha 🤞 Agreed, those albums are not going anywhere!
This was a really fun video, and I'm relieved you kept Voices Carry.
I too would keep Voices Carry, but I'd only listen to three songs off it.
I got rid of Alf in 1987, three years after I bought it. Then again, I taped 'Love Resurrection', 'Invisible' and 'All Cried Out' before I sold it. The rest of the album is forgettable.
Your phrase "I got rid of Alf in 1987," to me, anyway, conjures the picture of someone throwing a lifesize ALF puppet into the trash until it stops festering in the garbage and comes back alive through sheer malevolence
@@matthewbianchini - If I had the misfortune to have that stupid puppet in my possession, that's what I would have done with it.
Yes I am a fan and I did enjoy your discussion. Made me want to run out and buy the book. But I'm surprised you didn't cover the album Time of No Reply. Even though you mentioned a few of the songs. Maybe next time.
I stuck with discussing the studio albums for this video but I agree that Time of No Reply is a great collection and worth checking out.
Appreciated your having the following albums on your list for '84: Husker Du: Zen Arcade Minutemen: Double Nickels On The Dime Replacements: Let It Be Prince: Purple Rain All of them are essentials to me, and both Husker Du and the Minutemen are among my favorite bands of all time. I got into Metallica much later, with Master Of Puppets and Ride The Lightning being the only albums of theirs that really matter to me. I was also really fond of Will The Wolf Survive, by Los Lobos. Suffice to say, my top ten plays out differently from yours. But still, I love looking at lists (and making them). Thanks for sharing.
Hello Let it Vee, I'm one of the loyal subscribers of your channel. I have been following your channel for the last month. These days, I found out various problems that are preventing your video views and more user engagement. Here are the commons problem I have noticed on your channel listed below...
I live not too far away from Nick Drake's family home. Nick's life was sadly short but as with other artists his work was to be discovered after his death. Pink Moon for me is a masterpiece a work of genius. Nice video. Regards from England.
I find it interesting how you mentioned Jason B Sad specifically as I always find it a rip off of Get It On and struggle to enjoy it
"John Henry" rocks. It is essentially TMBG's full-blown grunge/alt rock masterpiece. Very little of the smartypants pop brilliance they crafted on prior releases. Nice video!
Excellent video Vanessa! My favorite albums of 1984 are: 1. Iron Maiden - Powerslave 2. Bryan Adams - Reckless 3. Dio - The Last in Line 4. Judas Priest - Defenders of the Faith 5. Metallica - Ride The Lightning 6. Berlin - Love Life - (This one never gets mentioned. It's a great Berlin album if you love really great synth rock with a lot of rocking guitar riffs) 7. Scorpions - Love at First Sting 8. Whitesnake - Slide it in 9. Mercyful Fate - Don't Break The Oath 10. Van Halen - 1984 11. Rush - Grace Under Pressure 12. Bathory - Bathoryy (1984) 13. Lee Aaron - Metal Queen - (this one also never gets mentioned. It's a fantastic power metal/synth metal album with Lee's great vocals) 14. Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales 15. Saxon - Innocence is No Excuse Funny enough being a metal head I also really enjoyed Private Dancer by Tina Turner.
I actually own Metal Queen on vinyl! Love the title track but it's also an awesome album.
Hi Vanessa! Greetings from Ireland! Great video. My Top/Favorite 15 albums of 1994 off the top of my head are: 1. Emperor - In The Nightside Eclipse 2. Manic Street Preachers - The Holy Bible 3. Megadeth - Youthanasia 4. Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas 5. Oasis - Definitely Maybe 6. Satyricon - The Shadowthrone 7. Pink Floyd - The Division Bell 8. Tiamat - Wildhoney 9. Dimmu Borgir - For All Tid 10. Amorphis - Tales of a Thousand Lakes 11. Therapy? - Troublegum 12. Cradle of Filth - Principle of Evil 13. Soundgarden - Superunknown 14. Enslaved - Frost 15. Pearl Jam - Vitalogy
They should called it The Diversion Bell as it diverts my attention away from the album when I hear it.
Hey, Vee! My name is Christian and I have my own channel called The Vinyl Sanctuary. I have just discovered you - and this superb video - and I am subscribing to you using my ‘Christian Ewen’ account. I really enjoyed your presentation, your knowledge and your superb picks! Best wishes from the UK, Christian
Hi Christian! Thank you for the kind words and subscribing! I'll be checking out your channel as well. Cheers!
I gave up on new/current music around 1993/94. I didn't care for Mariah Carey or Micheal Bolton, Nirvana or Pearl Jam, Billy Ray Cyrus or Ice Cube etc...so, i retreated deeper into the 70's and didn't even take notice of current bands for about 15 years. Recently, however, i've become a big fan of Airbag and Israel Nash. 🎶
I really enjoyed your video. Did you include Golden Earrings Moontan in your marathon listen? My favorite classic rock album of all time. One of my favorite bands too.
I did, very cool album!
My brother sent me a tape: Hot Trip to Heaven...blew my mind at the time.😊
