Right there w/ ya! I've played the first 8 songs so many times it's bonkers. Greatest stretch of songs ever by GBV for me. The Director's Cut is a raucous 'version', too.
I stumbled upon this and enjoyed you talking about albums. I, myself, always have cared more about the individual songs whether they are pop, alternative, hip hop, ska, trip hop, house,or drum n bass. When I watch videos like this, I might look up the album and then be surprised by a song that I might have forgot. Or sometimes I'll hear something and think wow! I missed out on that. Great video
Great to see you again, Vee with some interesting discoveries for 1994. I'm right in the middle of a deep dive for 1974 (a year I know you like) so it will take me a while to get round to 1994 but of the ones I know, apart from half your list, I would pick Monster by R.E.M., Jollification by The Lightning Seeds, Protection by Massive Attack, There's Nothing Wrong With Love by Built to Spill, Gideon Gaye by The High Llamas, Definitely Maybe by Oasis, Dog Man Star by Suede and Everybody's Got One by Echobelly
@@LetItVee - I have indeed - top of the list would be: Mary Macaslin - Way Out West Ozark Mountain Daredevils - It'll Shine When It Shines The Marshall Tucker Band - A New Life Robert Palmer - Snaekin Sally Through The Alley Robert Wyatt Rock Bottom and Van Morrison's Veedon Fleece is a revelation. 1974, the worst year of all time? It's a treasure trove that keeps on giving.
Great video, Vanessa! Obviously love to see the Petty appreciation growing and growing. Although I haven’t done a full deep dive, I know I think quite highly of 1994! I’ve only heard 31 albums, but still have a top 15 made up of at least 4 stars or higher: 1. Tom Petty - Wildflowers 2. Nirvana - MTV Unplugged in New York 3. Green Day - Dookie (sorry!) 4. Weezer - Weezer [Blue Album] 5. Soundgarden - Superunknown 6. Pearl Jam - Vitalogy 7. Oasis - Definitely Maybe 8. Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain 9. Elvis Costello - Brutal Youth 10. Jeff Buckley - Grace 11. Ween - Chocolate and Cheese 12. Blur - Parklife 13. Heather Nova - Oyster 14. The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Orange 15. Morrissey - Vauxhall and I
Great list. I turned 16 in 1994, music seemed so important then 1. Wildflowers- Tom Petty 2. Grace - Jeff Buckley (more like 1B, such a hard choice to pick between two perfect albums, but today Tom gets the nod) 3. Monster - REM 4. Jar of Flies - Alice in Chains 5. The Division Bell - Pink Floyd 6. MTV Unplugged - Nirvana 7. Superunknown - Soundgarden 8. Weezer - Weezer 9. 11 Tracks of Whack - Walter Becker 10. Purple - Stone Temple Pilots 11. Voodoo Lounge - Rolling Stones 12. Throwing Copper - Live 13. Sixteen Stone - Bush 14. Dookie - Green Day 15. Definitely Maybe - Oasis
1994 was a really strong year for me. It also benefits from the nostalgia bump. I agree with you about album lengths, which is an issue with the CD era.
Hi Vanessa! Greetings from Ireland! Great video. My Top/Favorite 15 albums of 1994 off the top of my head are: 1. Emperor - In The Nightside Eclipse 2. Manic Street Preachers - The Holy Bible 3. Pearl Jam - Vitalogy
Thats a great comment. “Sometimes an album was longer than they need to be “. I think you hit the nail on the head. Some songs seem nit to fit with the rest if the album. Great insight.
Ah Jeff Buckley. I was lucky to see him live four times starting in 1994-95. He even flirted with my date, but in a charming, not gross way, of course. Props to doing some digging and finding new discoveries! Deep dives of any year should unearth something. Even when I've already heard about a thousand albums in a particular year, I can always find something! Earlier in the year I did a daily countdown of 1994 faves, and they may not have broken into my top 30, but I found a few things. I knew about Cornelius' debut album but hadn't gotten around to hearing it until this year. Blind Mr. Jones - Tattoine and The Grays - Ro Sham Bo were pretty new to me too. While you may not be into heavier stuff, there's still loads that you probably would like. I highly recommend you check out Laika and Pram for starters. The Too Pure label was on fire at that time. The Sea And Cake, Sunny Day Real Estate, Slant 6. Plenty more indie pop like The Wedding Present, Built to Spill, Jale, Sloan, Velocity Girl, Madder Rose, Wild Carnation, The Wannadies... I'd assume you already know Stereolab and Low and they just didn't make yr list, but who knows! Holy shitsnacks, you know The Pains of Being Pure At Heart?! So good! I saw them in Prague at this wacked out club call The Meet Factory. You had to take a tram (if not driving), get off at a stop in industrial morass, climb under this fence, cross the railroad tracks, and make it up this steep rise to get to the club. But it was worth it. Also saw Beach House there.
Never cared for STP or Pearl Jam. Just sounded like bombastic, overly serious anthem rock. Took themselves too seriousy, esp. Vedder. Never got what was so good about Lowe. I tried, but he was better as a producer, imo. "Dummy" is brilliant. Always found TMBG to be waayyy too 'quirky college rock cutesy' crud. Meat Puppets were ok. Used to listen to Pavement back then, not now. Pollard is a low-fi lyrical freak who can really get ya w/ an earwhig. I'll be nice & not mention my thoughts on weezer. But that's a fantastic pick for #1. Still can't believe he threw it away in that damn river, cuz he was a phenomenal talent as a guitarist and vocalist, which such potential two write & record more brilliant albums.
I gave up on new/current music around 1993/94. I didn't care for Mariah Carey or Micheal Bolton, Nirvana or Pearl Jam, Billy Ray Cyrus or Ice Cube etc...so, i retreated deeper into the 70's and didn't even take notice of current bands for about 15 years. Recently, however, i've become a big fan of Airbag and Israel Nash. 🎶
GBVee's Bee Thousand is without doubt my favorite 94 album. I love that record on a spiritual level haha. Great list, take care!

@@kevinlakeman5043 yep, love the Director's Cut. So glad I grabbed it back in the day.
Thanks! Great list, especially the GBV shout-out. That's a great album. I would add Sol Invictus' "Death of The West".

Anyway, nice list as always, V :)
