long story short..big health scare of diabetes and high blood pressure issues..i was hospitalized..now i watch what i eat, i cut out sugars and as much carbs as i can..i am now eating better ..i watch your videos and other peoples videos for information and apply it to my diet..this health scare was on september 1st..i was 227 pds...today is september 26th and i weigh 207..i will keep reaching for the stars..thanks to you, and other people i watch for the wisdom and motivation to lead me to a healthier diet and outlook on life.

So eat these together as a snack. 2. Use dried or salted and rinsed seaweed and algae in your stews, curries, rice dishes, noodles, soups. Toss them in and cook them up. Gives fiber and great nutrition. 3. Do not use any form of Hijiki Seaweed. This has been banned in UK. Hijiki contains high amounts of naturally occurring arsenic. You don't want arsenic in your body! All the others are fine. 4. In Ireland and Japan, seaweed is a natural food and health supplement. Great stuff. Ocean vegetables contain double the vitamins and minerals of land grown veggies. Along with the seaweed, add dried and fresh mushrooms and fungus in your foods. Good stuff.

Happy days, I've lived by the sea for 16 years but only today I brought a seaweed home and ate it raw/heated up. It tasted delicious and nourishing. Will definitely eat it regularly from now on.
Thank you for doing this video. I was one of the people who asked you for it. I consume 8 grams (half a packet) a day with a little GT’S Kombucha (GT’S uses kiwi juice instead of cane sugar) and an ounce or two of 85% chocolate. Costco sells a 10 pack (17 grams per packet) for $9.50.
I eat both Japanese and Korean nori. Korean ones are salted and sometimes have oil on them so just check that it's an oil you like. Eg. The one that advertised olive oil was mixed with soy oil. Great snack!
We Welsh have eaten seaweed in a form known as laverbread in wales for many generations it’s now considered a delicacy so the price has risen prepared correctly it isn’t salty but has a mineral flavour and has to be the correct plant

@@injanhoi1 actually brown rice is the one that needs to be taken in moderation..it has traces of heavy metals like arsenic.....rice makes you fat is a wrong statement... anything in excess makes you fat....on the other hand the processed carbs in pasta , and breads are bad....I personally cannot eat them as I have an autoimmune condition...have had rice or rice derivatives for most of my meals...and I'm well within my ideal bmi ....to each its own...rice suits me... maybe not you...but can't say that it's bad universally.
There's the black/purplish laver variety of seaweed too for soups if you can find it. Once cooked, it turns dark green hue. Chop up and add some Napa cabbage to that, a few large slices of ginger, chunks of white flesh fish or dried shrimps (East Asian, Southeast Asian and South Asian cuisines uses this, imparting a unique umami flavor), scallions for garnish and season to taste…yum! When the cabbage stalks are soft and on the translucent side, the soup is done.
Dr Berg, PLEASE answer me, I would REALLY appreciate it. I follow your videos for years now and am very grateful for everything you do!! For the seaweed, I definitely love the nutrients, HOWEVER. I contacted several companies that produce the seaweed, they said that it is dried at very high temperatures, much higher than what iodine can tolerate. Therefore, most of the iodine is evaporated from the products that we eat. (The companies agreed, that it is a source of iodine, but not a good one...) Plus, it is fried/roasted in vegetable oils which is not great either. If the producing companies agree that roasted seed has only traces of iodine remaining after the transformation and the food is heated in oils, is it still a healthy product to consume? Btw, of we check the nutritional values in the back of the box, iodine is not mentioned.
I take 1 or 2 packs and pour hot water over them to make a quick seaweed soup. Add salt, soy sauce, sesame oil and white pepper to taste. Its especially nice when I'm feeling ill.
For those of us concerned about iron levels in our blood, should we avoid seaweed? I believe that senior multiple vitamin pills do not usually contain iron.
I buy dried kelp and soak it in hot water for 10 minutes, then follow the recipe for a delicious seaweed salad. It's not roasted or cooked and it hasn't upset my tummy. Our local Chinese shop has lots of different seaweeds.

I was just diagnosed with hypothyroidism, and placed on a low dose of Levothyroxine this week. I just ordered a bunch of seaweed snacks, and Brazil nuts. I’m willing to try anything to feel better, and help the medicine work, as I know it’s a combination of medication, and lifestyle. I’m planning on using the seaweed for my nightly snacking, and will have 2 Brazil nuts in the morning, as if it’s a dietary supplement. Not sure what to expect taste wise, but I’ll be eating it, regardless.
May I recommend buying the raw, dried laver(nori), and boiling it with water in a bowl or in a coffee mug. It is a delicious substitute for pasta, and it has extremely low calories.

I love seaweed but I always get worried when I see the warning labels on the packaging, especially if they're Asia derived. Why do a lot of seaweed products have the prop 65 warning?
Where do you get clean seaweed please? I know a lot of the stuff coming from Asia is pretty polluted. Also, a concern of mine is that these are often heavily salted but not with a good salt (Redmond's Real, true Pink Himalayan, clean Celtic Sea Salt). Is there a brand which is clean enough to confer the health benefits (which are many), without the toxins also? I mean...who wants Fukushima seaweed?

Have California rolls for dinner. They are delicious, easy to make, natural, and nutritious as heck. Buy large sheets of seaweed, lightly toast them on your gas/electric range, then cut them in half. Then add: 1. Rice (If you're on keto, you can drop the rice or reduce the amt.) 2. Cucumber 3. Avocado 4. Flying fish roe (Tobiko) 5. Fish (salmon, black cod, tuna, or shrimp) Roll them up and enjoy!

You could eat unfortified nutritional yeast to get B vitamins. The B vitamins work together in a complex. Or you could take Methylated B Vitamin Complex. Methylated because you dont want cheap cyanocobalamin (cyanide molecule) you want Methylcobalamin.
Hi Dr. Berg, sunny greetings from South Africa 🌻🇿🇦 I had a bi-lateral subtotal thyroidectomy over 20 yrs ago and have found out through another scan a few years ago that the remaining thyroid that was left behind has died off and not functioning anymore. I am on 0.1mcg of Eltroxin daily sometimes if my levels are low I am put on 0.05mcg Eltroxin. My question to you please, is it safe for me to take spirulina and seaweed/ kelp products? the seaweed pack i found at costco the other day was amazing. 10 large packages with no cheap oils, organic and product of korea (i assume south...) so none of the red flags i look for b4 buying seaweed snacks. my only complaint is they are kinda saltier than i'd prefer. but v tasty esp with sesame flavor!
Selenium, for me, without a doubt, causes bladder urgency. I know this because I accidentally picked up vitamin E that was packaged with it and realized it only a couple of weeks later. When I stopped it, my uti like symptoms went away immediately. That is why I can't take a multiple vitamin because all the formulas have minerals and I have the same reaction and realized from the accidental purchase of the wrong e product that it was the same mineral in the multiple that caused my problem. Same thing happens if I eat too many eggs at the time because they have selenium. ..seems a very trace is all I need. Others may be different.
I love roasted seaweed. Like to put them in my salads. However, in looking at the ingredients and seeing that some have Heidi process oils I stopped purchasing them. If I can find one with olive oil will be great. Thanks for sharing
I grew up eating this. My siblings and I would argue over who gets the whole packge and when someone would roast directly it on the gas stove, one of the other siblings would come and snatch a piece from the plate sitting next to the stove that has already been roasted.👍👍
Nice message Dr Berg. Is taking spirulina , astaxantha and chlorella powder similar to taking seaweed or are they less in the minerals and nutrients. Also in my own experience and looking at published data, the bioavailability of Epa and DHA from these seaweed extracts is very low compared to bioavailability from fish oil
I am catching up with Dr. Eric recently. I am buying the raw, dry laver(nori) in bulk and boiling it myself. It tastes so good. But, I like to let others know that proper boiling and roasting is very important in vaporizing away the excess iodine, which can be dangerous in high quantity.
Yes, some packets of product will have the disclaimer that reads this product may contain lead which is known to cause cancer. Stick with organic products instead
Yes Fidel, I heard the part about how the selenium in seaweed is good at fighting the toxins and heavy metals. What I'm asking is: in seaweed ITSELF, is there a concern that there are toxins absorbed into it? That's what I'm unclear about.
I buy the dried wakame and basically use it like some people use chewing tobacco. I stick it my gum and we just kind of hang out until I chew it up and eat it.

If they ate real seaweed they'd probably throw up. No healthfood stores really contain a thick piece of seaweed that I can find.
Eating Siracha Roasted Seaweed while watching this! It's delicious. If you're vegan / vegetarian, algae, seaweed, and kelp are great sources of DHA / EPA :). I always say, if you wonder where animals get their nutrients from, watch what they eat, and you'll successfully take out the middle man from the equation and obtain it directly from the source instead.
@@danL1011 I come from a country of predominant vegetarians, India (though I loved meat, and ate plenty of it through the majority of my life). In my country, it is not a myth but a nutritional science that animals do not need to be eaten. What you body needs is not the meat, or the oranges, it needs the protein / amino acids (full profile), and the vitamin C. Let's take examples here, DHA / EPA is only produced by Algae / Seaweed / Nori. Bottom feeders eat it, then fish eat the bottom feeders and it bio-accumulates up the chain. But mercury, toxins, and microplastics also bio-accumulate. So eating from the source is the cleanest option. Let's take B12. B12 is explicitly only made by a cobalt feeding bacteria in the soil. Back when humans drank from lakes and ate from the soil we would get plenty. Factory farmed animals living on concrete don't get B12 either. So we give them 90% of all man made supplements. The concoction of antibiotics in their gut flora die, and they can neither acquire it naturally nor metabolize it in their biome. You can take a B12 supplement once a week instead of feeding it through a cow to then say "B12 comes from red meat". Protein is explicitly only manufactured by plants. No creature in existence makes protein. Lentils, Legumes, Beans, Gains, Seeds, Nuts, Tofu, Soy, and vegan alternatives are packed with protein. Given it is ~20% less bio-available, you can still thrive on it. To me that means getting to eat an extra bean burrito, why would I complain. My country is proof, we're one of the most populated countries in the world, you don't hear about people dropping like flies. This is a western myth. There's absolutely no nutritional necessity to kill over 80 billion land animals and 3 trillion fish every year, take a huge toll on the planet, cause new zoonotic diseases, strip down rainforests, and if you're in the US -- spend a whopping $38 billion each year to only to subsidize meat & dairy (It's facts, look this up), while only 0.04% is used to subsidize meat and vegetables. There's an established correlation with meat / dairy consumption in the US, and heart disease / ischemia being the #1 cause of mortality. People favor meat only due to texture and flavour. It becomes a 1:1 choice between the sensory pleasure of your tastebuds, and the life of an animal (the unnecessary middle man).

In additional to cultivated plants, there are land weeds we can eat also. Young dandelion greens, for example.

I buy dried kelp and soak it in hot water for 10 minutes, then follow the recipe for a delicious seaweed salad. It's not roasted or cooked and it hasn't upset my tummy. Our local Chinese shop has lots of different seaweeds.

My daughter and I tried roasted seaweed a few days ago. My daughter made the comment that it tastes like you’re licking a fish! Lol! I agree, but now, we’re addicted and can’t get enough. How weird is that?

I was just diagnosed with hypothyroidism, and placed on a low dose of Levothyroxine this week. I just ordered a bunch of seaweed snacks, and Brazil nuts. I’m willing to try anything to feel better, and help the medicine work, as I know it’s a combination of medication, and lifestyle. I’m planning on using the seaweed for my nightly snacking, and will have 2 Brazil nuts in the morning, as if it’s a dietary supplement. Not sure what to expect taste wise, but I’ll be eating it, regardless.

May I recommend buying the raw, dried laver(nori), and boiling it with water in a bowl or in a coffee mug. It is a delicious substitute for pasta, and it has extremely low calories.

I love seaweed but I always get worried when I see the warning labels on the packaging, especially if they're Asia derived. Why do a lot of seaweed products have the prop 65 warning?
Where do you get clean seaweed please? I know a lot of the stuff coming from Asia is pretty polluted. Also, a concern of mine is that these are often heavily salted but not with a good salt (Redmond's Real, true Pink Himalayan, clean Celtic Sea Salt). Is there a brand which is clean enough to confer the health benefits (which are many), without the toxins also? I mean...who wants Fukushima seaweed?

What amount should be consumed at a time and how often
Have California rolls for dinner. They are delicious, easy to make, natural, and nutritious as heck. Buy large sheets of seaweed, lightly toast them on your gas/electric range, then cut them in half.
Then add:
1. Rice (If you're on keto, you can drop the rice or reduce the amt.)
2. Cucumber
3. Avocado
4. Flying fish roe (Tobiko)
5. Fish (salmon, black cod, tuna, or shrimp)
Roll them up and enjoy!

You could eat unfortified nutritional yeast to get B vitamins. The B vitamins work together in a complex. Or you could take Methylated B Vitamin Complex. Methylated because you dont want cheap cyanocobalamin (cyanide molecule) you want Methylcobalamin.

Hi Dr. Berg, sunny greetings from South Africa 🌻🇿🇦 I had a bi-lateral subtotal thyroidectomy over 20 yrs ago and have found out through another scan a few years ago that the remaining thyroid that was left behind has died off and not functioning anymore. I am on 0.1mcg of Eltroxin daily sometimes if my levels are low I am put on 0.05mcg Eltroxin. My question to you please, is it safe for me to take spirulina and seaweed/ kelp products?

Well your kidney meridian is out so kelp is good for kidney. Go for acupuncture and start with ashwaganda to decrease stress and inflammation in thyroid. I am also hypothyroid
Always check the label for your seaweed for canola oil etc. The snack packs in big box stores are classic for additives for some reason 🤷🏼♀️
the seaweed pack i found at costco the other day was amazing. 10 large packages with no cheap oils, organic and product of korea (i assume south...) so none of the red flags i look for b4 buying seaweed snacks. my only complaint is they are kinda saltier than i'd prefer. but v tasty esp with sesame flavor!

Selenium, for me, without a doubt, causes bladder urgency. I know this because I accidentally picked up vitamin E that was packaged with it and realized it only a couple of weeks later. When I stopped it, my uti like symptoms went away immediately. That is why I can't take a multiple vitamin because all the formulas have minerals and I have the same reaction and realized from the accidental purchase of the wrong e product that it was the same mineral in the multiple that caused my problem. Same thing happens if I eat too many eggs at the time because they have selenium. ..seems a very trace is all I need. Others may be different.

I love roasted seaweed. Like to put them in my salads. However, in looking at the ingredients and seeing that some have Heidi process oils I stopped purchasing them. If I can find one with olive oil will be great. Thanks for sharing
I grew up eating this. My siblings and I would argue over who gets the whole packge and when someone would roast directly it on the gas stove, one of the other siblings would come and snatch a piece from the plate sitting next to the stove that has already been roasted.👍👍

Dulse flakes are yummy too. Kelp powder goes in just about anything without knowing its there. Dried Kombu fronds are great in beans, soups, etc.
Nice message Dr Berg. Is taking spirulina , astaxantha and chlorella powder similar to taking seaweed or are they less in the minerals and nutrients. Also in my own experience and looking at published data, the bioavailability of Epa and DHA from these seaweed extracts is very low compared to bioavailability from fish oil

I am catching up with Dr. Eric recently. I am buying the raw, dry laver(nori) in bulk and boiling it myself. It tastes so good. But, I like to let others know that proper boiling and roasting is very important in vaporizing away the excess iodine, which can be dangerous in high quantity.
Would that kill off a lot of the nutrients though? What about just soaking it?

Yes, some packets of product will have the disclaimer that reads this product may contain lead which is known to cause cancer.

My baby doesn't eat enough protein or beans so I'm happy that she eats this! Her white spots on her arms had faded away.

@@cjf9810 Even the organic brands all have sunflower oil in them, its the oil and salt that is getting people excited to eat this stuff, very little seaweed is contained in it. If they ate real seaweed they'd probably throw up. No healthfood stores really contain a thick piece of seaweed that I can find.

Eating Siracha Roasted Seaweed while watching this! It's delicious. If you're vegan / vegetarian, algae, seaweed, and kelp are great sources of DHA / EPA :). I always say, if you wonder where animals get their nutrients from, watch what they eat, and you'll successfully take out the middle man from the equation and obtain it directly from the source instead.

Why do vegans/vegetarians often say this? You need the middle man because you are not a ruminant.
@@danL1011 I come from a country of predominant vegetarians, India (though I loved meat, and ate plenty of it through the majority of my life). In my country, it is not a myth but a nutritional science that animals do not need to be eaten. What you body needs is not the meat, or the oranges, it needs the protein / amino acids (full profile), and the vitamin C.
Let's take examples here, DHA / EPA is only produced by Algae / Seaweed / Nori. Bottom feeders eat it, then fish eat the bottom feeders and it bio-accumulates up the chain. But mercury, toxins, and microplastics also bio-accumulate. So eating from the source is the cleanest option.
Let's take B12. B12 is explicitly only made by a cobalt feeding bacteria in the soil. Back when humans drank from lakes and ate from the soil we would get plenty. Factory farmed animals living on concrete don't get B12 either. So we give them 90% of all man made supplements. The concoction of antibiotics in their gut flora die, and they can neither acquire it naturally nor metabolize it in their biome. You can take a B12 supplement once a week instead of feeding it through a cow to then say "B12 comes from red meat".
Protein is explicitly only manufactured by plants. No creature in existence makes protein. Lentils, Legumes, Beans, Gains, Seeds, Nuts, Tofu, Soy, and vegan alternatives are packed with protein. Given it is ~20% less bio-available, you can still thrive on it. To me that means getting to eat an extra bean burrito, why would I complain. My country is proof, we're one of the most populated countries in the world, you don't hear about people dropping like flies. This is a western myth.
There's absolutely no nutritional necessity to kill over 80 billion land animals and 3 trillion fish every year, take a huge toll on the planet, cause new zoonotic diseases, strip down rainforests, and if you're in the US -- spend a whopping $38 billion each year to only to subsidize meat & dairy (It's facts, look this up), while only 0.04% is used to subsidize meat and vegetables. There's an established correlation with meat / dairy consumption in the US, and heart disease / ischemia being the #1 cause of mortality. People favor meat only due to texture and flavour. It becomes a 1:1 choice between the sensory pleasure of your tastebuds, and the life of an animal (the unnecessary middle man).

There's an old study from the 50's on Indian rail workers. Turns out the mostly vegetarian rail workers from the south were suffering way more heart attacks than their northern meat eating, cigarette smoking counterparts. ;-)

Not to mention the typical belly and visceral fat (even for non overweight people) seen on vegetarian Asian Indians. This is also true for Chinese monks and agrarian Pueblo Indians.

@@danL1011 -Fish eat a lot of algae. Seaweed is algae. So eating the seaweed cuts out the middle man and goes directly to eating the algae rather than eating a critter who eats algae.
