As a retired mechanic and having worked on land rovers from a series one, the best engine they ever built was the 300TDI, an excellent engine and indestructible, as long as you serviced it regularly.
Can attest to this, had a 1995 D1 with 150k miles. It was battered body wise (the previous owner was a forrester in Wales). Paid £750 for it. Had it 2 years; started first time, everytime.
happy new year Baz as I sit with a beer watching the content first class love those dry belts the car manufacturers have a lot to answer for with wet belts I worked for a manufacturer and I know the people that makes those decisions in meetings
I got a wheel nut spanner that extends because I have one in the two other cars and they are handy to remove the nuts or bolts. Second a auto trim removal tool set, was still lacking one and had some pieces already but now a full kit.
Littler bit late to the party, came across your vids few months ago when working on my car. Picked em back up today, fun to watch. Got a nice new Milwaukee 3/8 impact for Christmas and a new dewalt drill for Christmas- can't beat new tools.
Funny how you mentioned the alternator pulley throwing the belt off very same issue in my DW10. My crank pulley is shot too, when it rains it pours 😂 the only tool I used over the Christmas was a bottle opener Baz
Great video Baz, the Freelander 2 has a fantastic engine, mine has done over 200k as well. I have a 2nd F2 with the i6 petrol engine, not many people have seen one. (3.2 Volvo straight 6)

Did a water pump on a Corsa D 1.4. Meyle water pump and genuine Vauxhall gasket. Spotlessly clean put it on dry and it leaked 😢. Back off and another gasket with instant gasket this time.

Stage 6 emmissions regulations killed this engine for PSA, Ford and all the old Ford companies including JLR. All three then went there seperate ways with Ingenium, Panther and not sure what PSA replaced with. We all need to stop moaning about Engineers trying to meet government regulations and perhaps instead elect different leaders with improved support of the Motor industry.
Agreed Baz, 1 of the most reliable cars ive owned is my 2010 Freelander 2. Looked after car for previous owmer for years and bought it off them when they wanted an upgrade, close to 200k miles and still going strong.
Great content. Enjoy2025. I got a Gunson’s Testune however you’ll have to time travel back to the 70’s. That along with a good set of feeler gauges, a mechanics tools of diagnosis. Most small garages couldn’t afford a Crypton Tuner with Oscilloscope. Halcyon days.

Happy Xmas Baz... Got a new deep and shallow socket set. Was able to replace the cambelt and water pump on my 1.2 500c. I got rid of the majority of my tools when I left the trade after 25 years. I used to be a master tech at Kia.

I got neilson 3piece ratchet set ct5131, biggest load of bollox, returning tomorrow 😂, I knew neilson were bad but not that bad, also got solar shed lamps, hose pipe clamp set and calliper hanging set.
i changed the timing belt and waterpump on my transit a few months ago..silicon gasket on the waterpump took half a day to get off and make the surface perfect ..i refit the new waterpump with a ford paper gasket and its not lost a drop of water since..why do they do it

They are ALL different, for example, golf V hid main connector wtf! I actually destroyed the clip before I found out how to release it. Transit injector rail for removing the inlet manifold. It's tucket underneath and you have to press up v hard.. they all come apart easily.. if you know HOW Have a great 2025 everyone 😀
Ive spent yesterday and today replacing the gearbox on my sons ford KA, for a supposedly reconditioned unit, took it for a test drive and its knocking in 1st gear 🤬
2.2 PSA absolutely brilliant engine. I have the 2.0 in my focus ST Those engines if looked after will go on FOREVER. Big mistake going from the PSA to ingenium. All because of emissions I guess. You're right though those filter housings are terrible. Think I used a 27mm ratchet spanner to get it off and even then it took forever to do

Did you remove the starter to pin the flywheel? Or just mark it and torque it with the gun? I have done these engines before, but always remove the starter. I'm always up for a short cut if possible.
You can either wing it by centring the key in the oversized slot & nipping up the bolt (pulley on blind), hoping nothing moves or take the pain in arse starter off & pin it like you know you’re supposed to ! soo tempting not to 😇
@@sparky1543 200%. I have seen all manner of very strange running / drivability issues with these engines where the timing is slightly off after a tommy tipex belt change, with no correlation codes set.
Wish there was a database of trusted mechanics who will actually work on engines like yourself. I have rang 12 garages to take and look at my petrol Dissy Sport with a tick over noise, ( not chain ) No one wants the work.
Landrover themselves don't want to work on these engines ! As a small place it's not economically viable to have 1 ramp out of 4 locked up waiting on parts which may be on back order and unavailable for a week or more. Ebay is not an option as lots a fake rubbish on there. So in the end like many other garages we took the decision not to work on these engines. In the time it takes to do 1 engine several services and clutch changes can be done. Simple economics.
I have Freelander 2 , 07 reg same colour! very close to 211500 miles Apart from intercooler charge hoses failing occasionally causing boost fault They keep going strong 💪
Can't remember which but on either my 1.6 galaxy or my 2.2 mk4.5 mondeo txs ..... it literally said on the info for the water pump to put a thin layer of instant gasket on the metal gasket ..... logically makes no sense but that's what it said
I'm 53 and he asked me what were the oldest tools in my cab? I said probably my vise grips they're about as old as my eldest son, and him being a former plumber by early trade knew how you ca only file the teeth down so far bought me another set! Just so they'll last me the next 25 years!🤣🤣

Those Peugeot 2.2 HDI engines are bulletproof, probably the best engine Land Rover ever fitted to their vehicles. It’s funny how so many people think these have the Transit 2.2 Puma engine just because the Defender’s use it.
@ No it’s not, the 2.2 HDI came out in 2000 in the PSA 406, 607 and C5, long before it was ever fitted into a Ford. I’ve seen both engines side by side and there’s no similarities. The Defender 2.2 Puma is the old Mondeo / X-Type 2.2 TDCI unit.
Great video Baz highlighting the durability and serviceability of the Freelander with the 2.2 psa diesel fitted. They still attract strong money and tend to have been owned by an owner for a long time and well looked after. Happy New Year Buddy 🥂
it costs fortunes to heat massive garage spaces like this the heat disappears if the building isn't sealed/insulated. Kerosene heaters may make that feasible but the lads probably just chuck thermal bottoms and tops on with gillets etc to keep toasty if its 2 or 3 degrees out.
Hit TV series 'Gavin and Stacey' features a Welsh family in the Valleys (old coal mining area). Quite engaging. But then, I'm Welsh, like Baz. Greetings from Pembrokeshire.
JLR should have stayed in bed with ford & used the 2.0 ford/peugeot engines thats used in the 2015 onwards mondeo, Cmax, Edge & Galaxy. Other than common coolant leaks from the EGR & thermostat its a decent engine
i always use rtv on water pumps nine times out of ten they are part of the timing when changing the belt so do not want to risk a leak been that way for 45 years now and no problems atb

@@ilovecds9606 PSA brought the 2.2 HDI back out in 2017/8 in the Boxer & Relay vans with AdBlue on them to make them Euro 6 compliant.
Ford & peugeot continued working together until 2019 with the newer 2.0 diesels

I got flexible hose clamp pliers! Used them today and it make life so much easier.

A lovely Sealey cordless ratchet maybe not as good as Milwaukee but only for occasional jobs , Its nice to see a proper skilled mechanic at work

For the pin could you use a broken drill bit for the pin
I have a mondeo with the exact same engine and it’s flawless
My wife got me impact sockets up to 38mm but they are 1 inch drive 😅 so I've had to order an reducer.
Bought for Xmas to myself a new inexpensive OBD reader..does what my old Autel $180 does for about $20 but is updated for more modern cars.

@@timbo19751975 its the sliding crank pulley that can cause it. Easily put you out a tooth if the flywheel, cam isn't pinned.
Got me a new welder 😂 only downside had to pay for it myself

Er, it's the same engine. PSA engine codeveloped with Ford. Puma is Ford's internal name for it.

Landrover took this engine and murdered it with the Ingenium.
All they had to do was give it a timing chain instead of a belt.

Bit of a faff messing with engine mounts when not needed. Can be easily done all via wheel arch.
