- League of Legends has been one of the most played games in the world for over 10 years now. But, as time goes on, recently it seems Riot Games aren't putting in as much effort into the game as they once did. And the straw that broke the camels back today is the mishandling of the new season and the disappointing launch of the Season 2023 cinematic.
Today we take a look at what's going with riot games and how things could potentially change for the better soon. Or not.

long-term investments and being understaffed due to the pandemic are both understandable circumstances - it is still very frustrating and depressing to see them so openly state things like showing next to zero interest or drive for doing stuff related to world-building and casual game modes - the absolute worst has to be the fact that they were supposed to release Nexus Blitz for christmas - which than got cancelled due to technical issues..... and than they just rub it in by signing off the year with a set of skins for christmas, the cancellation of the single returning game mode people had been waiting for and were promised to get at the end of the year - oh and lets not forget about the void event we were teased at the beginning of the year before the release of Bel'Veth which just literally never happened...... It is all just piling on and not looking good, most definitely not creating hype whatsoever
The only thing that could be a valid excuse for this is if they were re writing the entire game’s code from scratches: it would solve most of league’s problems and has an high enough needed investment to justify cutting off actual lol budget

Man i miss Rotating Game Modes so much, nexus blitz, all the repeating 3 game modes over and over again every weekend, it was still fun and they took it all quietly while gaslighting us into believeng that its gonna be back

Those same game modes likely don’t work nowadays given item changes, balance, and champions. The effort of updating said game modes is simply not feasible given the ambitions and “dedicated” resources of the LoLPC team (assuming the underlying threads hold some ounce of truth).

Thank you for making this. I agree on so many things. Ugh...The game has been feeling meh for a few years because of the lack of game modes, christmas event, and actually, the last few 'events', are actually not. It's just getting points for playing games, which you can use in shop. Sad.
It's like they decided to throw skins and event pass (which you'll have to pay for) every patch, announces it as an "event", and calls it a day.
@@daydream10.18 Definitely very low effort. I buy almost all the passes and would often try and defend them even though I sounded delusional. But after this Years roll out and looking back at how last year was basically NOTHING in a real event. Star Gaurdian event was an absolute mess. Spirit Blossom came and went like nothing. This year we don’t even get a cinematic. It’s getting ridiculous.
Yeah it's bland, there's nothing new at all. Same thing just new champs with 20 dashes from time to time and a load of skins

Also keep in mind last year we got stuff: we got more expensive Mythic skins (from 10 gemstones to 125 ME), we got a broken big game event for the year (Star Guardian), we got a reworked event interface that feels so empty, we got inflation on Riot Points, we got nerfed esports rewards, we got a music skin line with no music, we got achievements, we got more eternals we have to pay for, and we got no more essence emporium! See we got lots of things!!

Masterwork chests basically don’t exist for f2p players anymore and the rate for ME out of normal chests is so atrocious, that I only got it once since the introduction.
Add all of that to the price increase from 100 to 125 ME and you are looking at ~5 years of playtime for a single ME skin.

@@nubsity620 ok that's cool. But why did I only get 10 ME for every Gemstone I had but skins now cost the amount of 12.5 (minimum) gemstones instead of the 10 they used to cost? That and the fact they were low quality for the first 6 months after their update (with only Lunar Senna and Cyber Janna not having quality issues from pbe to release.)
(Before you ask, High Noon Talon looks more prestige in the base version, SG Ekko had animation issues, Ocean Song Seraphine still has issues with her hair, SG Syndra had to get her splash edited and made worse to dodge false advertising)
I love when Yasuo said "welcome to our league, and this is our legends." The whole theater burst out crying, one of the female audience got pregnant, some guy won a lottery, another dude got promoted at his job, and so much bizarre events that happened inside the cinema. Truly one of the games of all time

For 5 years I actually enjoyed League by playing RGMs in every patch update because of it's unique gameplay and creativity, I prefer to play it rather than normal or rank, but ever since they stopped releasing for the recent patch update like from 2021, I've gotten inactive and frequently stopped playing. I still miss those old RGMs like Poro King or Ascension.
Just want to add, Valorant released TWO cinematics in one week. A season cinematic, a skin cinematic, and a map trailer. Even as a Val player I thought that was odd when League got basically nothing.

I miss the Riot of 2016 that stated that they would release more game modes for the players. Then released new game modes with every event and had rotating game modes each week. I also miss when event like Halloween and Christmas would have special maps and modes. Like where is my doom bots T.T

Riot is literally weeding out the fun parts of the game. interesting ability mechanics like rek'sais roaming ult, aurelion sols stars, their attempt at reworking rengar Q for the better? gone.
how about different game modes besides SR and ARAM? Twisted treeline and Crystal Scar? never heard those names before. instead what do we get. Ahris 8th VGU or so and more Ahri and Lux skins. remember the people keeping track of when some champs released their last skins? there were times where champions didnt get a new skin for almost 5 years because their playerbase was too small to be profitable. nowadays riot has to make skins for them since the community started to catch on

Might be because you're looking for something new. I left the game during season 9 cuz I realized I wasn't playing for fun anymore. It was the only game I used to play, anything I played after leaving was a breath of fresh air to me.

I get u, tbh it's the same for most of us. I quit LoL regularly bcs i just can't keep playing it over and over, same for my friends, it's boring. Year after year same map and everything else. There's so much they could do, but they do absolutely nothing.

Fornite actually realizes that investing in temporary events that are expensive short term will generate them more money in the long term cause it prevents the core game mode from getting stale as the event provides a nice distraction for the players until they are ready to return to the main game, rather than getting burnt out on the same thing. ARAM has been silently carrying LoL and nobody even knew, but even that can't last forever.
Fortnite? They went from 170k to 30k viewers on twitch in 2-3 years. Doesnt really seem to work that well.
For what it is, they still seemed to keep enjoyable alternative gamemodes and map changes out, never having epic employees pr bomb and say that they removed them because having servers for them is "too expensive" or "too taxing". For league to divert attention to not addressing the real problems in aram and giving zone-control champions, one of the bigger problems, a massive buff by way of fallen turrets, and continuing insane number buffs-nerfs, is pretty telling that theres either serious avoidance or mismanagement. I get that it's dying faster (higher you fly, farther you fall), but you can't keep a fad a fad if it isnt consistently enjoyable in some way.

I remember being in eighth grade grieving over the loss of both my parents in the morning at school while I was supposed to be studying. (To be clear I chose to continue with my end of year exams) I was trying to distract myself from...dark thoughts and by grace, I came across a League cinematic. It's the one with Lux in it, not sure what year but I was blown away, what was I watching? Who were these characters? Is this a movie? How is what I'm watching *free*? And I binged every other league cinematic after that. It became something I looked forward to though I've never played it in my life (my some day, league sounds expensive) watching the cinematic, even as a non player ruined my day. It was so bad, it seems like a trailer. I just hope Riot pulls up their socks, the cinematic trailer/'new season' seemed to be the only thing that was going to keep giving players hope. I feel so bad for you all.

I'm glad that I got to play League before they stopped making events or gamemodes like the Odyssey. Some of the most fun and memorable times I've had in League.
my mom doesn't know anything about video games, however she does know that i have played league since 2011. one way she would show interest in my hobbies, her main way of showing affection and that she cares about me is watching the league of legends cinematics and discussing with me the characters in the animations. i cannot express how much joy it brings me to be able to talk about a game i was so passionate about with my mother in this way, a combined love we have for animation bringing us together even though she knew NOTHING about league.
so imagine my disappointment when this year, there is nothing new for me to talk about with her about league. it's sad. really sad, and its sad to see the game i loved so much for over ten years feel like its dying.

@@BueorrFalhen valorant has way less playerbase. For every valorant skin bundle players buy, there's are like 50 1350rp skins bought on league. Valorant esports scene is way smaller than league's one. Both games are free, both games have passes (league has more per year tho). Just take in the info that in the year it got out, it is estimated elementalist lux alone grossed around 1 billion usd. League is pretty much a money printing machine atm.
I'd also argue that valorant does not have the capability to last as long as league has/will being another generic shooter that's just csgo with abilities.
I appriciate the statement of "refreshing game modes, kinda like it used to be", that used to be Dominion and TTL for me. Sure 90% of the games i played was Summoners, but i never needed rotating game modes, hell I never even touch ARAM (unpopular opinion i am sure, but to me, aram just ain't it). I understand that balancing twisted and Dominion took up resources. But honestly, i miss the day i could just jump into either mode, or even create custom games, hell i remember custom games with urf and other games modes, those were good times.

Back when I use to play League, I always wanted them to go a similar route that Blizzard did with Starcraft 2. Create an Arcade mode and an editor where players can create custom maps or game modes that anyone can play. So players could recreate the snow map, the past game modes or any new experiences they want others to share. They could just spend a fraction of their time and resources to give people a sandbox tool. Have someone moderate to make sure things stay clean and they can focus on their business strategy.
A custom game arcade browser like SC2 or WC3 would be amazing.

@@aquiledelrosa ? No, because an arcade mode will just break every time they change something, and you will have tech debt and run everything AGAIN. None of the mod and map generated from that arcade mode will be useable after few patches, and all of this resources for what?
Dota 2's custom game modes literally has that and has what should be seasonal only modes like frostivus and diretide, permanently available 24/7. And Dota 2 thrived like nothing happened.

I quit league of legends about 4 years ago and it's funny seeing this video in my recommended. It seems like all the problems that led me to quit are not only still there, they've only gotten worse. I remember getting frustrated with Riot because it seemed like there was always money in the budget to produce dozens of new skins every month but updates to the ban/report system, voice chat, winter summoners rift, etc. were all treated as if they were gargantuan, unsolvable problems that they just didn't have the resources to tackle (Or they'd gaslight us into thinking these weren't actually problems) Glad to see I made the right choice in leaving for good!
to be fair, not saying I support a loose ban system but it is a pretty complex issue because if they were to ip ban someone every time they said a slur, flamed their teammates or the enemy team, or were just "toxic" in general, they would be losing potentially thousandsssss of players which would in turn lose them a lot of profit, so from a business standpoint Im not sure what the solution is, obviously you can warn them or give them a temp ban but that will never satisfy a good portion of the community who expects a full on ban for things, there's also the matter of what the line is between competitive trolling in other words trying to get into the enemies head and tilt them into playing badly for a competitive edge, and then what is "harassment" its a pretty complicated issue that cant really be solved by just "banning all toxic players" however where I will agree with you is on them releasing 736382828228 skins every month and not fixing their fucking game, honestly Riot has really proven they dont care in general about their game, the quality of said game, and how to balance it perfectly.

Here is a crazy thought: what if writing and production departments at RIOT are busy with Arcane and instead of splitting those departments and risking repeat of Harrowing fiasco they decided to cut new year content?

Arcane is made by a COMPLETELY other team. Fortiche made Arcane and was supervised by Riot. 😂

Concept design, narrative design, dialogue writing, storyboarding, producer approval, PR approval, legal approval are just some of the steps that have to be taken before it gets to Fortiche and they start animating stuff. While they are animating stuff music production team, sfx team and voice acting team have to lineup their performance perfectly with animation as well, and they are not part of Fortiche either. And if anything does not get together perfectly they have to start the goddamn cycle from the very beginning.
Creation of a high tier animated movie is a goddamn nightmare. For everyone involved. Learn to respect other's work.

League won't die, a lot of streamers based their live on the game, the tournament scene are pretty good for the most part.
But it's definitely going to a form of fatigue, they should bring back lots of the removed modes.

I honestly have lost faith into League/Riot. For years, they have systematically drawn back things that dont give immediate profit. Arcane almost didnt happen, they only made it because a small group of very dedicated rioters ignored higher-ups and pushed HARD to get it out. I especially liked how they themself told us this in the Arcane- Bridging the Rift behind the scenes documentary and didn't even realize how crazy that was.
Im not saying riot is not allowed to focus on profit, absolutely not. But I feel like they just dont understand that the reason league has lived so long is exactly because they did a lot of things that didnt give immediate returns. As far as I know, Riot were the ones that made Video game companies uploadung big cinematics for their events a thing, i dont thing this was a thing before they proved how great it could be. Same with game modes - we only got them because some passionate rioters pushed against the Higher ups that only wanted to see more money, and now they're gone, or atleast dont really focus on game modes anymore.
I also dont believe that highest budget shit. I mean i dont think they are lying, but i have my doubts that this budget will go into anything but more skins (and maybe arcane season 2).
In my opinion, Riot really has lost their trustworthyness. Not saying they cant turn it around, but as I see it, they really have to prove now that they are willing to put aside "profit over everything" and focus again on player satisfaction and putting out some quality stuff that may not make a lot of money now, but will keep people into league and generate profit in the long run.
Because in the past, they did this often - and we can all see how "little" money they made during that time. I lost my hope, but I really want to believe again.

This exactly! Riot executives think League is fine since competitive is doing so well and people are still playing ranked, but most of the western players are struggling to continue to play the game since there has been no initiative to appeal to them. The casual playerbase.

The only thing I'm certain about is that Riot somehow always has a way to revitalize the game, but this time they definitely are being slow to show _something_ , anything. But who knows, we'll have to wait and see.

I think right now its in a critical position. Like hanging over the edge and rito's next move could pull it up, or let it go. Ill give them the benefit of the doubt in the "biggest budget for 2023" thing. Like you said i really miss those other game modes, like odyssey - one of the most fun game modes ive played- or the winter map, which i cant understand why they dont bring back. So for me 2023 is the last year where they could patch things up. Though with the new cinematic its like they are saying, they have 0 plans and the rift will be empty once again, but it could also be a bait as to disappoint us from the get go and surprise us later on.
Even if they continue to not do anything new, i doubt the game will ever actually die; not until they pull the plug on the servers. I mean look at overwatch. The last 4 years of overwatch 1's life, devs had abandoned the game working on ow2, and yet people still played it.
Riot's problem is actually a Tencent problem. All of these issues would be resolved if a company took Tencent out of controlling the game. They only care about microtransactions and since they took over the game has steadily declined and that decline is speeding up with each passing year.

I hate how these game developers just know that their game won't die so they don't really do much for it anymore (I'm looking at you CSGO). Somehow it makes me want to see League die just so these people who put half assed effort realize that they fucked up, and that they really should've been more careful. Gone are the days that we felt like our worries could actually affect big games nowadays.

Ehh, I wouldn't point this to game devs rather than stakeholders trying to profit more than not. We had a passionate lore and narrative team but their budget is almost non existent. They put their resources mostly on Esports and Skins now, lots and lots of nice but overpriced skins
Actually an adventure mode about the stories of the countries in runeterra that is about the local heroes.We can play it with the spesific hero of the story OR we can play it with our own main. It can be useful to understand the traditions and ethnic roots of other places.

It's not like it'll be a mode and people have been clammoring for PvE events since only the Gods know when

TBF if all event game modes became part of a rotating weekly game more permanently it might work and be a nice refresher. I mean we have all of the pretty clothes for our dollies and we'd like to have different playsets so we can have fun matching the playset theme or something.
Another youtuber mentioned it before (probably Necrit or someone else). But if they added the Odyssey and Star guardian PVE with roguelike mechanics then those would have more replayability. Honestly Riot, I doubt it would be that hard for them to do that and patch those every now and then. Since those game modes are locked with 5-10 champions at most. It shouldn't be that hard to balance.

I'm surprised the game lasted this long tbh. It went downhill around season 3 due to the player base focusing on the competitive side of the game when it was never meant to be a competitive game. But recently Riot has just been trolling their player base by removing more things than they add.
Idk, I felt it was fun until after season 8. It lost a lot of its magic over the years, removing all the cool masteries and modernising the art style; removing Dominion and Treeline so there’s only Rift and ARAM (as an ARAM hater, being stuck with 1 map with long games gets so boring); skill expression is fucked, you can just play Mordekaiser or Udyr and win every game brainlessly; hitboxes and dodgy game mechanics never get fixed (bugs, creep block, etc... they won’t make money for solving this so it won’t happen); RP prices are absurd and don’t like up well with any in-game prices, meaning you have to over-purchase; season 11 items are dysfunctional and need to be hard adjusted... the game in general is in a very frustrating state, where it’s difficult to have fun unless you abuse meta or don’t care about the game’s outcome whatsoever.

forgot to mention that they might be cancelling the MMO, too. some developer on reddit said that it's "not a guarantee that it will ship" which we all know means "most likely not coming out" and its just softening the blow for when they announce it.

In all honesty they're not that great, but people just complain because they would rather have the modes than not have them. Most of the old modes are gone for a reason, which is because people did not play them, because they were not that great.
@@Tyler.Burleson Because they were always done for events, with questionable missions, and if they were done in rotation, they redid the same ones too often leading to burnout. The game modes were great since they catered to the larger, casual side of League players, instead of focusing so harshly on the esports scene, that's been losing money anyway.
Yeah, those big events were something. Even for a MOBA, worst medium for event and storytelling, it's still crazy, feel like MMO big summer event. But eventually, Riot come out with data that showed how player drop out "too quick", and each event eat humongous resources, so they start to pull out and develop other games and TV show.
Man i really wish riot werent so against modding. It's one of the best ways to keep the spirit of an old game alive really, without requiring a ton of investment on the company's part.
There were some really good alternative maps that were either removed or just never came back in "rotating gamemodes" (a hypothetical rotation of alternative gamemodes per weekend that would pique interest, meant to give back what was taken but also increase play.) Poro king (it lowered the cd of aram snowballs and after your team hit 10, a giant poro would drop down on the map and fire at the enemy. You could also recall to the poro which made for some pretty cool plays), ascension (on an older map called the crystal scar, there was a shadowy map that you teleported from spawn into, and if you killed this giant raid-boss xerath and teabagged his corpse youd get to turn into a giant version of your champion with buffed stats. It was kinda point based per-kill and per-"ascension" per team, kinda weird that they never made a king-of-the-hill type thing out of it), and that one project-skin based map that was all adcs and assassins. It couldve definitely been improved on but it was a cute map

Like I've always said. Christmas is a seaon of giving, a season where you have fun with friends and family and enjoy the festivities. Riot gives nothing, only believes in greed and money, so that's why there's no Christmas event. No one should blame Tencent for that either, the other Tencent games have Christmas events. Heck even Pokemon Unite has Christmas events and skins.

I lost count of how many times friends of mine dropped from the game. Some came back, some went to another break, etc. I myself have never uninstalled. I've never lost my will to go into a couple games with friends and having some fun ever since I joined in season 2.
This year... well, I've thought about actually uninstalling league. It feels like everything I loved about the universe and the game is missing. No stories, no gamemodes, no cinematic, nothing. I really hope they turn things around. I REALLY hope I change my mind because I know that while I've never gone on a league break before once I do I will not come back. Not when I'm already having way more fun in FFXIV.
Yup. Idk why they stopped innovating and doing fun things? Why make all those great modes and throw them away. I get that Summoner’s Rift is the primary game, but go figure the more they try to change that too the worse it gets. Their throw it away policy needs to stop. That and they need to appeal to real players that the one percent that is E-Sports.

While a great book, much better than I would have thought before reading it, doesn't make up for it. We had lots of small stories from all over runeterra before. Why do we dedicate an entire year just for Viego? We have 100+ champions my dude.
Maybe that's what Riot wants to go for? Well then what happened with the epic void event that was set up with that cool cinematic we DIDN'T get this year? A story, a Champion, a cinematic and that was it.
If only that effort went somewhere, I dunno, the star guardian event they teased and they PERFECTLY knew that all people wanted was to go back to a star guardian game mode. Nope, just a bit of flair to an already done mode and call it a job well done.
Not to mention the biggest fucking point: That is all outside league. You don't get to watch Arcane neither on league client nor the page. You don't get to read the book on the client nor the page. League is dying because they are putting all their eggs on the future and see the results.
A bunch of people are leaving. TONS of people notice this, it pushed even Riot to acknowledge this trend. Just see how much fucking money Riot makes on league alone and see what effort they put into improving the game. 90% of it is just skins.

Doesn't change your experience btw, so either you enjoy it and play it, or you don't and then stop playing 🤷♂️ I take pauses for months quite often since season 1, sometimes it's just not fun and sometimes it is, but blaming Riot for it seems ludicrous to me man.
Don't get me wrong, I hate on rito a lot myself, for different matters, but on this one it just seems so trivial to me and, even if you're allowed to be disappointed because you didn't get a little video or a little lore this season, that's not what the game is really about. I love those cinematic trailers as much as the next one, but they're just a plus. i agree to the statement that riot is focusing their resources in other games, but the thing is that it is not just 1 game (valorant), they are developing 2 games simultaneously: the fight game and the MMO and i hope that is the reason we got such a bad mannagement by riot
But why they have to completely devoid the main game people bought RP for, from any content? League was not a kickstarter nor a fundraiser.
It's like paying for hospital bills but you don't get none cause it will be invested in upgrading the facility, & buying/upgrading new equipment. Or giving money to your son to help with his college fees, only for him to invest it in gaming. Or giving your daughter money for the same reason, only to spend all of it on a gucci bag or a new iphone. Or pay the USA version of taxes but have the indonesia/brazil version of government.
Riot is a billion dollar company. Do not make excuses like this for them. If they don't pour at least decent effort into its MAIN game that BIRTHED the other games you mentioned then how is that fair. Btw the reason they can make those other games is because of the support LoL got. Let me tell you about valo. There arent many resources either. They took a map out of the roster only to change it barely and resolve like 5% of the issues.

How can you say that the game isn't dying and then give a bunch of examples of things that would constitute it dying? It being on such a decline is evidence that it is, but that doesn't mean it will die *soon*. The same way Riot views downward trends on new gamemodes as justifying not making any more new game modes, eventually Riot will look at League's overall decline as justification to put more resources into their other projects, which they already have. In years to come, if Riot does nothing to reverse this trend, it will decline to the point where it could justifiably be put on maintenance mode. The exact same thing happened to HotS and the people saying that League isn't dying are the same people that were playing HotS and thought Blizzard wouldn't pull the plug.
As far as the statements from Reav3 at 7:14 - 7:27 goes, I really hope this is talking about a reworked client overall, the main reason we dont get a lot of the cool features wild rift has is entirely because of how jank the pc version is, seeing a revamped game that can actually utilize high poly skins, auto map rotations so you never have to play on red side, etc. will actually keep me playing more in the long run. If this is what they mean by "investing into bigger things" then I personally fully welcome it, I've been complaining about the differences between wild rift and league and how one feels like its getting WAY more love than the other.
Don't get me wrong, I would love to have new gamemodes but personally think this is more important for the long term whereas gamemodes are more short-term bursts of excitement that dwindles as the gamemode ages (unless they actually care enough to make one permanent). Outside of client changes, if thats not what they are talking about at all, then we best be getting events that arent dating sims, that shit got stale fast for me

There's just no reason to invest a lot of resources into new gamemodes when after maybe a 2-3 weeks tops they will be abandoned by everyone. They also just dilute other gamemodes and make their queue times longer. It's why they removed 3v3 and don't keep URF around all year long. I also don't think anyone really realizes how insanely complex game developing has become for League. As standards and game complexity grow year after year it becomes increasingly difficult to make a coherent, not-buggy, balanced and fun game mode. And let's be honest, the League community will shit on everything Riot does, including any new gamemodes they put out.
I actually got contact for Custom Skins and Maps, from a more human person working at Riot Support and TLDR they basically said "if you get caught for using custom skins we can't help you because it breaks ToS"

Personally, this might be too hopeful, but since riot did say that they can't create more game modes because the engine is to dated, there may be a possibility that they are updated the engine.
