I'd suggest keeping a needle scaler on the service truck to clean stuff up like those sprocket sections. Knocks the dirt off nice and as long as it's not a machined surface you want to keep. Fast and easy on the accessable areas.

Engineers, should all be required to physically do manual labor in the specific area they will have the degree in. Why? So that they can experience the crap they lay on the techs doing the labor. That is a tall order but it might change the mental blocks of the lack of sense. Good vlog Jeff.

We had a "bomb cylone" a couple years back. It rained and the ground was still froze and it floated the river ice up and it totally wiped that bridge out.
you could say it like this to see who is paying attention. Well, I got in there and a had a good bolt going in. I worked it around for a bit, doing some heavy pushing and the next thing you know the nut is gone. As you can imagine, it didn't take long after that, that I lost my bolt too. They might start calling you JPayvert if you talk like that too much, so use your mileage on it wisely. Thanks for the videos, Jeff.

Those cold starts on the old D9s make me cringe. No freezing weather here, and the starts sound much quieter. I always wait for your cold starts to shake something loose inside. Glad it doesn't though 😁
Regarding the bridge height, engineers are given a budget (overpass shall not cost more than $x) Overbuilding to a higher clearance is great if the customer has the budget. There is a saying that it is harder to engineer a Ford (lower price tag) than a Mercedes (higher price tag) Regarding horizontal flow of subsurface water thru gravel, Jeff wins. However as you also know, earthen dams hold back water just fine (especially if clay is involved) -- could probably ask Chris-dig18 about his pond dams.
