It doesn't matter how many iterations they make of Anne Of Green Gables, this version is THE standard: the best cast, the best chemistry between members of the cast, the best adaptation... simply the best! How I adore Richard Farnsworth's Matthew, and Colleen Dewhurst's Marilla. What treasures they are in this.
I admit nothing like this version of Anne of Green Gables is the best. I wished I had gone to visit "Prince Edwards Island when I had a chance but can't due to my age. I loved how Sullivan who produced this mini-series was so wonderful and went by the book version too. Loved it then and NOW!
I think she needed both Marilla and Matthew. Matthew to encourage and adore her, to make her love herself. And Marilla to reign in her flights of fancy and keep her feet on the ground.
Rachel Lynde might have had Karen tendencies BUT at least her and Anne grew to respect one another. And the sentiment she gave Anne about how she will one day “glow up” was so beautiful.

She would have had something to say about any hair color. She was the sort of person that you had to walk eggshells around, manage your own behavior to not set them off. Anne was a child not a doormat. Everyone is full of positives and negatives. In that clip the negatives came out. Doesn’t strike me as being very Christian. All the kid said was how do you do?

I had grandfathers, but one lived far away and when we went to see him on our summer holiday from school he was drunk the whole time and totally ignored his four granddaughters. My other grandfather had indecent desires and I won’t go there but it was awful 😞

I was thinking about what Matthew would've said if he was there when Rachel Lynde called Anne homely and skinny (and if Anne hadn't instantaneously yelled at Rachel herself lol). He's very shy and quiet but I think he'd probably say Anne wasn't at all homely and told Rachel she was being heartless.
it's all about marilla's unexpected amused smirk when Anne says "the things I said about you were true but I shouldn't have said them" ☺️😏 I remembered this from being a child watching with my mom..I loved marilla right then and there as now I knew she wasn't all cold and hard, I knew she was alright and liked Anne. seeing this three decades later is just ...it feels exactly as warm and special to watch this now, just like back then.

She is so repressed and yet, unusually Independant for the times, that her morality and vulnerabilities seep out in subtle ways; Anne being a major catalyst for undoing Marilla's repressed indoctrinated positioning and aloofly reserved personality. I think she is one of the best created characters. In my mind, Colleen Dewherst IS Marilla, her portrayal and acting is so in line with my understanding of the character from the books that I can imagine none other playing this role. ;)
@@89ksokd91 All these characters (except Matthew, who really is an angel) have flaws, but I perceived almost as soon as we meet Murilla that she does indeed have a tender heart, as well as a quick but dry sense of humor. She has turned thinking one thing while saying something quite different (for the sake of manners, mostly) into an art form. She's not so much repressed as deeply self-controlled. I really love her, and Colleen Dewhurst played her to perfection. ((Murilla is also in several episodes of the "Avonlea" TV series (made in Canada). It's a great series. There is one episode called "The Materialization of Duncan" that gives deep insight into how, deep down, Murilla really feels about being a lifelong spinster. A delicately touching episode, one of my all-time favorites.))

I want to be open minded and experience a diff take with the newer version, but I just can't, it's too meaningful for me -even when I read the books, I saw Anne as Megan Follows..all the characters actually, Matthew, Marilla, Gilbert..etc.. were the same to me in my vision. I'm glad the new generation can embrace a new cast, and I'm glad all of the fans of the original have such a warm place in their hearts filled with loyalty for the original actors. 😌
My mom made me watch these on her box set of vhs because it was her favorite story growing up. I was a teenager who thought I was too cool for stuff like this. Now looking back, I really cherish watching this with my mom and her sharing something that she loved when she was young. ❤❤❤❤
I went nuts over this as a teenager Jonathan Crombie was such a hottie( Gilbert Blythe) He made me nuts and it made me sad that anne wouldn’t give him the time of day.. I can’t believe it didn’t occur to her that maybe he was trying to get her attention and trying to you know hey you know I kinda like you know pay attention to me was his thought process Although I’m sure it was just the insult thing going on the carrots thing going on That made her so upset this came out when I was born and it would play when I was a teenager my heart still skipped the beat when I see Jonathan Crombie on my God Meghan follows was awesome-. For years I never saw the ending or got to see what happened at the end I only got to see like half the storyline and it made me pine to know what happened? Did she end up with Gilbert or did she marry somebody else or what happened?? Years and years later as I am 37 I found out what happened me and mom watched it together cause she didn’t know what happened either and I was nuts about it and my sister-in-law bought it for me and I went bonkers
I was super skinny as a kid and had a similar encounter with an overweight family friend who constantly commented on my thinness. I told my mom that the next time she said anything about my weight, I was going to ask her why she was so darn fat. My mom said I’d better not, but to this day, I wish I’d had Anne’s courage. As you can imagine, I loved this part of the book when I read it as a child. The movie didn’t come out until I was a little older. ☺️
Makes me want to sit down & watch the whole film again. Obviously when you have a script based on LM Montgomery's fabulous novels, it's hard to go wrong, but when combined with the sheer talent of these actors--it's a film that stands the test of time & has travelled around the globe because of its quality. Definitive version, for me.
This version is the best, hands down! My daughters and I watched this so many times, back in the day, that we all still use quotes from both Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea. A forever favorite. 💚💚💚

Barbora. I am chuckling at your spelling of Anne’s name. In the book Anne hates her name, but insists if she has be called Anne, it must be spelt with an ‘e’. So by spelling it as Ann in your original comment you committed a cardinal sin as far as the character is concerned, almost as bad as calling out her red hair. The books are great, and I highly recommend you read at least the first one. Megan Fellows did a wonderful job, but to really understand Anne you need to read the books.
I received Anne of Green Gables for Xmas(1963), I still remember it was the first time I cried reading a book...when Matthew died I was devastated! That was almost 60 years ago. 😥
I just love the character of Matthew! There couldn't have been a better choice for this character whom they have chosen!! I sort of wish he had more presents in the movie than what was portrayed. He reminded me so of my own grandfather.
I enjoy the old sayings that you hear in L.M. Montgomery books. 'Her tongue seems to be hinged in the middle' Is one but there are so many more that you come across when reading her books. This was IMO, the best Anne of Green Gables that has ever been done. Everyone in it was wonderful and it was faithful to the book. I really enjoyed watching it.
Correct. The three "independent strong women" were deadlocked in a struggle of pride and righteousness. Matthew put it into context for Marilla and showed Anne an honorable path forward...as well as his faith in her. Without this sequence, Anne was just a Rachel in training.
@@STho205 Father's or Father figures are extremely important in a son's or daughter's life, and Matthew' character showed he character and gentle, but loving ways are what makes a good man and Father.
I love Matthew and him feeling proud of himself for solving the issue. He knew how determined Marilla was to make Anne be respectful AND how justifiably hurt Anne's feelings were. That coupled with the fact that Anne refusing would only make Marilla think Anne refused to listen to her elders. He didn't want Anne to get on Marilla's bad side when Marilla was just beginning to soften up to her. I also love when Marilla tells Matthew what happened between Rachel and Anne and Matthew is 100% in agreement with Anne for telling her off! He's always on Anne's side cause they're Kindred Spirits.
Its jaw dropping how they are treated today. As if with special respect without having done anything at all in life or with themselves, like they have as much quality opinion as a mature person. and at the same time held back like babies from the adult world ( not sick adult fun world, but career, family and responsibilities)until adults have time to haphazardly deal with them.

Matthew Cuthbert was my absolute favourite character in these movies. I loved watching these on VHS with my mum on a Sunday as a child, thank you for uploading them 💜
My favorite scene is when Marilla lost it with Rachel over the currant wine. You could almost see the flame shooting out of Marilla’s eyes, she was so angry.
I think the reason they were so big on wanting a boy is because they simply felt like a boy was built to do hard labor on the farm and in the fields while a girl typically isn't built for such work. I'm being general here. In the midwest where I'm from the women are certainly built for such work.
Yes. Farm labor was the only reason they even wanted to take in a child in the first place. Not only are boys *typically* better built for hard farm labor, but in that time it was also just a matter of gender division. Able or not, it just wasn't something that "well-born" girls and women were "supposed" to do, just like boys were just as able to make a cake, but that wasn't what they were "supposed" to do then.
Agree - the Cuthberts were kind. They were aging, needed help and wanted an heir to inheret the Green Gables farm. It was a sweet compensation for any son to help around the farm.
Well it was customary as well. Marilla being the head of that house and being unmarried was not the way things were back then, and there was no security or safety in that life, though in Anne's fictional world, this wasn't the devastating position it was for so many women..so having a boy to take over was mandatory and customary on many levels. This book is truly ahead of it's time lifting up females and their strength, showing the world what a better world with independant women could look like.
I always like how Matthew expressed support for Anne even having not witnessed the encounter. Matthew knew Anne was a good-natured child who would have behaved herself politely with any adult who was nice to her. He also knew the way Rachel Lynde acts sometimes when she's inclined to being a know-it-all to Marilla. He's such a treasure, I love Anne of Green Gables and especially Matthew Cuthbert.
If Anne should've minded her manners and not been rude to Rachel because Rachel was an adult and Anne was a child, who taught Rachel her manners way back when? What made her think it was ok to "twit" Anne about her looks? If Anne should apologize to her, Rachel should apologize first for what she said. And she said it in the third person which is always rude when a person is standing right there. And she managed to jump on all the things Anne hated most about herself. It's too bad Anne disliked her red hair so much. I love red hair.
This is just how it was in the 1900’s. Society was so much different than it is today! I was actually taught this way also. Mind your elders, manners ect. Born in the 1960’s grew up in the 1970’s. ( makes me 60) . Nowadays, young people to me get away with everything! In my opinion . (Not everyone under the age of 40 is bad ? Just the select few, no respect or common sense. )
BUT I always agreed w/Anne in this scene! I saw this when I was 30 something, my kids were still young then) I would of yelled at Rachel Lynd also! But probably would of been punished for being disrespectful just the same!
@@t.m.a.3665 I'm a few years older than you so I know what you mean. I was also brought up to respect my elders and call them Mr and Mrs never by their first name. Being in the north I wasn't brought up with Ma'am and Sir but used them when I worked. When I was a kid, for example if an adult I didn't know caught me doing something and demanded to know my name and where I lived so they could inform on me to my parents I could never have dreamed of saying what a young person would say today or running off. We got in trouble since we always respected our elders. I remember once without thinking telling my friend her mother was dumb and I sure got in trouble for that! Now kids think nothing of cussing or doing whatever they please in front of adults and older people. I don't like the way the world is going.

There is no more perfect cast than this. Even the less important side characters were cast perfectly and acting was top notch. LORD, I love this series.
While I don't condone Anne's actions of yelling and insulting Rachel (though I would be very tempted to do so myself, I'd *try* to hold my tongue though I understand it would be incredibly hard under the feelings of anger and hurt I'd be feeling), I don't blame her for getting so angry. Rachel was very rude and insulting to Anne and had no right to talk about her that way, especially directly and bluntly to her face like that. I'm glad at least that Marilla told Rachel off for her rudeness, and was understanding to Anne when she told her that her behaviour was inappropriate. I'm also glad that when Anne apologised she was genuine and honest about it (and not forced). While Rachel could have apologised to Anne as well, I suppose she at least acknowledged she was too hard on her and didn't hold a grudge. Sure, I agree she needs to better acknowledge and change her own behaviour, still I suppose this was something decent. Good on Matthew for being the honest and gentle peacemaker in this situation. I laughed with him when Marilla said that the quiet would change her mind.
I wouldn't have expected Rachel to apologize outright, but she essentially did apologize if you add up everything she said. I love her remark, though, that Anne's tongue "appears to be hinged in the middle." That gives me a merry laugh every time! I utterly adore Matthew. He's not only the gentle peacemaker, but he also loves his adopted daughter with his whole heart. He is very possibly the first man Anne had met up to this point in her life who was kind and gentle and cared about her.
In the novel, Marilla recalls when she was a little girl overhearing one of her aunts saying she was homely and the hurt of the insult stuck with her even into adulthood. Marilla knew Rachel was being cruel and how bad being called ugly feels when you're a kid. I love that Marilla told Rachel off.

Always loved this book. It was such an amazing story as a child, I realized that I could have Anne's bravery and kindness. So I always thought that this book was such a great life lesson.
Anne got treated like a red headed stepchild. No pun intended. The old woman was verbally dicing Anne up right in front of her. Terribly skinny and homely? What does she think SHE herself is? She's no looker either and is over the hill. No one could just stand there and take that sort of verbal abuse and not respond, especially someone who is portrayed as being super strong spirited like Anne. Also Anne needed to think more about the things she said, because some people might take her literally. Punish me any way that you want I'd do anything if you really wanted me to I don't think she understands the gravity of what she's saying when she makes such statements.
Anne is a writer, of course she is dramatic and exaggerates. She does learn the consequences of putting her foot in her mouth over and over...as she grows, she does tame some of these ways in stride a bit...but all writers with a dramatic flare are somewhat like this.
Robin -- You're making the mistake of interpreting these scenes through a modern-day lens. Back then, good people like the Cuthberts would never have interpreted what Anne said in a foul or twisted way, and Anne knew it, so there was nothing wrong with what she said.
@i .candy What if they wanted to physically abuse her? What if the man decided he wanted to take sexual advantage of her? Maybe not the guy in this scene but what if Anne were placed in another home with a not so passive guy and she made this statement.

Anything could happen, and Anne could end up being preyed on, but she is smart enough to know not to speak like this in a situation so threatening. Context matters.
@@foxteen8721 truly, she is the only one who apologized. In those times, no adult would ever apologize to a child because of the accepted heirarchy and views that reigned. Marilla didn't apologize to Anne and also should have..she shouldn't let Anne get abused by other adults and her reactions are understandable. Rachel didn't apologize and is an archetype of narcissistic people who show no remorse. Anne did what society demanded she do, she did it honestly and shows as the only character with remorse (and a balanced view of it) for behaviours and words. Brilliant character representation we can all probably relate to this day as well.

In the book, Rachel Lynde ends up warming up to Anne and when Anne gets in trouble with a teacher, Rachel tells Marilla it was the teacher, not Anne, who was wrong.
I first saw this series as an adult and so wished I'd seen as a child. However, it still completely captivated me and made me everything I would have felt as a child. The acting is wonderful and story so engaging.

In Swedish, this sort of apology that is pushed on you to do by someone else is called "Doing a Poodle" ie acting as an obedient dog when you apologize. This is a perfect exemple of how to do a Poodle.

Anne was so extra sometimes, but with good reason. She had pretty freaking hair and I got mad right along with her when someone chastised it. The bond between her and Matthew was so sweet. This is honestly the only and best adaptation to screen of Anne of Green Gables ever. The cast was perfection.
Maybe it’s because I am a millennial but I do believe no matter how old you are, manners are necessary. Rachel Lynn can only get respect by earning it.
I can't help but think that knowing Rachel as well as she does, Marilla should have anticipated this and better prepared Anne to handle it. Telling Anne before hand that Rachel tends to be tactless and shouldn't be taken too personally might have headed things off before they could become a problem and enabled everybody to make a better first impression. But Marilla did have a lot on her plate at the moment, and time makes fools of us all...
Amarillo! Perfect I can't imagine anyone else playing this character than whom they have chosen! Just excellent. Truly she is a real Marilla. And no other could portray the character then she! There's no doubt in my mind at the 1985 version is the only and of Green Gables I want to watch!
If anyone loves this series you should watch road to avonlea it takes place after anne moves away and has the same actress for Rachel and Marilla they end up adopting twins
The classic 1985 is by far the BEST Anne adaptation of them all.

it's all about marilla's unexpected amused smirk when Anne says "the things I said about you were true but I shouldn't have said them" ☺️😏 I remembered this from being a child watching with my mom..I loved marilla right then and there as now I knew she wasn't all cold and hard, I knew she was alright and liked Anne. seeing this three decades later is just ...it feels exactly as warm and special to watch this now, just like back then.
You can see her heart in other moments prior to that as well. Like when Rachel says those things, Marilla's face is like "how could you say that!?'

She is so repressed and yet, unusually Independant for the times, that her morality and vulnerabilities seep out in subtle ways; Anne being a major catalyst for undoing Marilla's repressed indoctrinated positioning and aloofly reserved personality. I think she is one of the best created characters. In my mind, Colleen Dewherst IS Marilla, her portrayal and acting is so in line with my understanding of the character from the books that I can imagine none other playing this role. ;)

@@89ksokd91 All these characters (except Matthew, who really is an angel) have flaws, but I perceived almost as soon as we meet Murilla that she does indeed have a tender heart, as well as a quick but dry sense of humor. She has turned thinking one thing while saying something quite different (for the sake of manners, mostly) into an art form. She's not so much repressed as deeply self-controlled. I really love her, and Colleen Dewhurst played her to perfection. ((Murilla is also in several episodes of the "Avonlea" TV series (made in Canada). It's a great series. There is one episode called "The Materialization of Duncan" that gives deep insight into how, deep down, Murilla really feels about being a lifelong spinster. A delicately touching episode, one of my all-time favorites.))

I want to be open minded and experience a diff take with the newer version, but I just can't, it's too meaningful for me -even when I read the books, I saw Anne as Megan Follows..all the characters actually, Matthew, Marilla, Gilbert..etc.. were the same to me in my vision. I'm glad the new generation can embrace a new cast, and I'm glad all of the fans of the original have such a warm place in their hearts filled with loyalty for the original actors. 😌

My mom made me watch these on her box set of vhs because it was her favorite story growing up. I was a teenager who thought I was too cool for stuff like this. Now looking back, I really cherish watching this with my mom and her sharing something that she loved when she was young. ❤❤❤❤

I went nuts over this as a teenager Jonathan Crombie was such a hottie( Gilbert Blythe) He made me nuts and it made me sad that anne wouldn’t give him the time of day.. I can’t believe it didn’t occur to her that maybe he was trying to get her attention and trying to you know hey you know I kinda like you know pay attention to me was his thought process Although I’m sure it was just the insult thing going on the carrots thing going on That made her so upset this came out when I was born and it would play when I was a teenager my heart still skipped the beat when I see Jonathan Crombie on my God Meghan follows was awesome-. For years I never saw the ending or got to see what happened at the end I only got to see like half the storyline and it made me pine to know what happened? Did she end up with Gilbert or did she marry somebody else or what happened?? Years and years later as I am 37 I found out what happened me and mom watched it together cause she didn’t know what happened either and I was nuts about it and my sister-in-law bought it for me and I went bonkers

I was super skinny as a kid and had a similar encounter with an overweight family friend who constantly commented on my thinness. I told my mom that the next time she said anything about my weight, I was going to ask her why she was so darn fat. My mom said I’d better not, but to this day, I wish I’d had Anne’s courage. As you can imagine, I loved this part of the book when I read it as a child. The movie didn’t come out until I was a little older. ☺️

Obviously when you have a script based on LM Montgomery's fabulous novels, it's hard to go wrong, but when combined with the sheer talent of these actors--it's a film that stands the test of time & has travelled around the globe because of its quality. Definitive version, for me.
This version is the best, hands down! My daughters and I watched this so many times, back in the day, that we all still use quotes from both Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea. A forever favorite. 💚💚💚

In the book Anne hates her name, but insists if she has be called Anne, it must be spelt with an ‘e’. So by spelling it as Ann in your original comment you committed a cardinal sin as far as the character is concerned, almost as bad as calling out her red hair.
The books are great, and I highly recommend you read at least the first one. Megan Fellows did a wonderful job, but to really understand Anne you need to read the books.
Matthew couldn't have loved Anne any more even if she was is own flesh and blood.

I received Anne of Green Gables for Xmas(1963), I still remember it was the first time I cried reading a book...when Matthew died I was devastated! That was almost 60 years ago. 😥
I just love the character of Matthew! There couldn't have been a better choice for this character whom they have chosen!! I sort of wish he had more presents in the movie than what was portrayed. He reminded me so of my own grandfather.

I enjoy the old sayings that you hear in L.M. Montgomery books. 'Her tongue seems to be hinged in the middle' Is one but there are so many more that you come across when reading her books. This was IMO, the best Anne of Green Gables that has ever been done. Everyone in it was wonderful and it was faithful to the book. I really enjoyed watching it.

Correct. The three "independent strong women" were deadlocked in a struggle of pride and righteousness. Matthew put it into context for Marilla and showed Anne an honorable path forward...as well as his faith in her.
Without this sequence, Anne was just a Rachel in training.
@@STho205 Father's or Father figures are extremely important in a son's or daughter's life, and Matthew' character showed he character and gentle, but loving ways are what makes a good man and Father.
I love Matthew and him feeling proud of himself for solving the issue. He knew how determined Marilla was to make Anne be respectful AND how justifiably hurt Anne's feelings were. That coupled with the fact that Anne refusing would only make Marilla think Anne refused to listen to her elders. He didn't want Anne to get on Marilla's bad side when Marilla was just beginning to soften up to her.
I also love when Marilla tells Matthew what happened between Rachel and Anne and Matthew is 100% in agreement with Anne for telling her off! He's always on Anne's side cause they're Kindred Spirits.

As if with special respect without having done anything at all in life or with themselves, like they have as much quality opinion as a mature person. and at the same time held back like babies from the adult world ( not sick adult fun world, but career, family and responsibilities)until adults have time to haphazardly deal with them.

And rarely afforded an apology when mistreated like Ann got from miss Linn. Like believing women are free rather than USED by the medical industry for profit through abortion. Western society definitely isn't civilized today on any level. I think the reason they were so big on wanting a boy is because they simply felt like a boy was built to do hard labor on the farm and in the fields while a girl typically isn't built for such work. I'm being general here. In the midwest where I'm from the women are certainly built for such work.
Yes. Farm labor was the only reason they even wanted to take in a child in the first place. Not only are boys *typically* better built for hard farm labor, but in that time it was also just a matter of gender division. Able or not, it just wasn't something that "well-born" girls and women were "supposed" to do, just like boys were just as able to make a cake, but that wasn't what they were "supposed" to do then.
Agree - the Cuthberts were kind. They were aging, needed help and wanted an heir to inheret the Green Gables farm. It was a sweet compensation for any son to help around the farm.

Well it was customary as well. Marilla being the head of that house and being unmarried was not the way things were back then, and there was no security or safety in that life, though in Anne's fictional world, this wasn't the devastating position it was for so many women..so having a boy to take over was mandatory and customary on many levels. This book is truly ahead of it's time lifting up females and their strength, showing the world what a better world with independant women could look like.

I always like how Matthew expressed support for Anne even having not witnessed the encounter. Matthew knew Anne was a good-natured child who would have behaved herself politely with any adult who was nice to her. He also knew the way Rachel Lynde acts sometimes when she's inclined to being a know-it-all to Marilla. He's such a treasure, I love Anne of Green Gables and especially Matthew Cuthbert.

If Anne should've minded her manners and not been rude to Rachel because Rachel was an adult and Anne was a child, who taught Rachel her manners way back when? What made her think it was ok to "twit" Anne about her looks? If Anne should apologize to her, Rachel should apologize first for what she said. And she said it in the third person which is always rude when a person is standing right there. And she managed to jump on all the things Anne hated most about herself. It's too bad Anne disliked her red hair so much. I love red hair.
This is just how it was in the 1900’s. Society was so much different than it is today! I was actually taught this way also. Mind your elders, manners ect. Born in the 1960’s grew up in the 1970’s. ( makes me 60) . Nowadays, young people to me get away with everything! In my opinion . (Not everyone under the age of 40 is bad ? Just the select few, no respect or common sense. )

@@t.m.a.3665 I'm a few years older than you so I know what you mean. I was also brought up to respect my elders and call them Mr and Mrs never by their first name. Being in the north I wasn't brought up with Ma'am and Sir but used them when I worked.
When I was a kid, for example if an adult I didn't know caught me doing something and demanded to know my name and where I lived so they could inform on me to my parents I could never have dreamed of saying what a young person would say today or running off. We got in trouble since we always respected our elders. I remember once without thinking telling my friend her mother was dumb and I sure got in trouble for that! Now kids think nothing of cussing or doing whatever they please in front of adults and older people. I don't like the way the world is going.

That’s the whole point of her character as written. She’s dramatic.
There is no more perfect cast than this. Even the less important side characters were cast perfectly and acting was top notch. LORD, I love this series.

While I don't condone Anne's actions of yelling and insulting Rachel (though I would be very tempted to do so myself, I'd *try* to hold my tongue though I understand it would be incredibly hard under the feelings of anger and hurt I'd be feeling), I don't blame her for getting so angry. Rachel was very rude and insulting to Anne and had no right to talk about her that way, especially directly and bluntly to her face like that.
I'm glad at least that Marilla told Rachel off for her rudeness, and was understanding to Anne when she told her that her behaviour was inappropriate. I'm also glad that when Anne apologised she was genuine and honest about it (and not forced). While Rachel could have apologised to Anne as well, I suppose she at least acknowledged she was too hard on her and didn't hold a grudge. Sure, I agree she needs to better acknowledge and change her own behaviour, still I suppose this was something decent.
Good on Matthew for being the honest and gentle peacemaker in this situation. I laughed with him when Marilla said that the quiet would change her mind.

I wouldn't have expected Rachel to apologize outright, but she essentially did apologize if you add up everything she said. I love her remark, though, that Anne's tongue "appears to be hinged in the middle." That gives me a merry laugh every time! I utterly adore Matthew. He's not only the gentle peacemaker, but he also loves his adopted daughter with his whole heart. He is very possibly the first man Anne had met up to this point in her life who was kind and gentle and cared about her.
In the novel, Marilla recalls when she was a little girl overhearing one of her aunts saying she was homely and the hurt of the insult stuck with her even into adulthood. Marilla knew Rachel was being cruel and how bad being called ugly feels when you're a kid. I love that Marilla told Rachel off.

Growing up as a redhead was never easy for anne she was judged but deep down she's loving when she was given love.
Always loved this book. It was such an amazing story as a child, I realized that I could have Anne's bravery and kindness. So I always thought that this book was such a great life lesson.

Anne got treated like a red headed stepchild. No pun intended. The old woman was verbally dicing Anne up right in front of her. Terribly skinny and homely? What does she think SHE herself is? She's no looker either and is over the hill. No one could just stand there and take that sort of verbal abuse and not respond, especially someone who is portrayed as being super strong spirited like Anne.
Also Anne needed to think more about the things she said, because some people might take her literally.

You’re speaking about the looks of an actor. The actor was reciting lines. Your remarks are terribly unkind.
Anne is a writer, of course she is dramatic and exaggerates. She does learn the consequences of putting her foot in her mouth over and over...as she grows, she does tame some of these ways in stride a bit...but all writers with a dramatic flare are somewhat like this.
Robin -- You're making the mistake of interpreting these scenes through a modern-day lens. Back then, good people like the Cuthberts would never have interpreted what Anne said in a foul or twisted way, and Anne knew it, so there was nothing wrong with what she said.
@i .candy What if they wanted to physically abuse her? What if the man decided he wanted to take sexual advantage of her? Maybe not the guy in this scene but what if Anne were placed in another home with a not so passive guy and she made this statement.

Anything could happen, and Anne could end up being preyed on, but she is smart enough to know not to speak like this in a situation so threatening. Context matters.

Marilla didn't apologize to Anne and also should have..she shouldn't let Anne get abused by other adults and her reactions are understandable. Rachel didn't apologize and is an archetype of narcissistic people who show no remorse. Anne did what society demanded she do, she did it honestly and shows as the only character with remorse (and a balanced view of it) for behaviours and words. Brilliant character representation we can all probably relate to this day as well.

In the book, Rachel Lynde ends up warming up to Anne and when Anne gets in trouble with a teacher, Rachel tells Marilla it was the teacher, not Anne, who was wrong.
Rachel is a diluted mess. She wasn't outspoken. She was rude, obtuse, and uncouth.
I first saw this series as an adult and so wished I'd seen as a child. However, it still completely captivated me and made me everything I would have felt as a child. The acting is wonderful and story so engaging.

Anne was so extra sometimes, but with good reason. She had pretty freaking hair and I got mad right along with her when someone chastised it. The bond between her and Matthew was so sweet. This is honestly the only and best adaptation to screen of Anne of Green Gables ever. The cast was perfection.

Maybe it’s because I am a millennial but I do believe no matter how old you are, manners are necessary. Rachel Lynn can only get respect by earning it.
I can't help but think that knowing Rachel as well as she does, Marilla should have anticipated this and better prepared Anne to handle it. Telling Anne before hand that Rachel tends to be tactless and shouldn't be taken too personally might have headed things off before they could become a problem and enabled everybody to make a better first impression. But Marilla did have a lot on her plate at the moment, and time makes fools of us all...
To be honest, I think the scene would still play regardless of her warning. Anne was severely insecure.
