I loved the 1980s version Anne of Green Gables with Megan Follows and Jonathan Crombie. It was one of the best. Both Megan Follows and Jonathan Crombie worked well together. Too bad that Jonathan Crombie died so early at age 48 with a brain hemorrhage.

I’m a married man and never saw this growing up. Met my wife and she always said we HAD to watch it someday. We’ve always appreciated eclectic music including Loreena McKennitt (maybe you see where this is going). Once the DVD’s came out, we got them and as we were about to start I wondered how cringy watching an 80’s miniseries about a teenage girl would be. But hey, we had a couple bottles of wine ready to go so I was ready. I was immediately drawn to the great story of sweet Anne. My wife was so amused and happy. Then this scene started, with us into that second bottle, with all the tension of Anne’s nervousness. A few seconds in and it hit me, “OH S*** SHE’S RECITING ‘THE HIGHWAYMAN!” I started tearing up, my wife started tearing up, and she said “See?! I told you!” I didn’t see this until after we started watching Reign with Megan Follows in it. Now I can understand my wife’s shock at seeing Megan in such a different kind of role.
For anyone here nostalgically watching this scene... I highly recommend listening to the audible recording of Anne of Green Gables narrated by Rachel McAdams. It’s so good!... Although she doesn’t actually recite this poem in the book, and I came here to hear it bc I just love this scene ☺️

There are very few good orators any more. Oratory is no longer a skill that is taught nor practiced so we are limited to performers.
