Your videos are already some of my most rewatched content (except music lol) and it is specifically because there are usually small grey areas in my knowledge in body language and behavior. When you first talked about the 3 reasons that we raise our eyebrows, I connected them together as showing that something or someone has our attention.

  • @RianShafer
    @RianShafer Год назад +40

I have very little control over my brows to make them behave, but they definitely respond to conversations on their own. I also tend to raise them in "oh really?" moments & lower them in moments where I am not impressed. My mom would raise one brow high & we knew she was not buying what we were selling at the moment especially if she thought (or knew we were not being truthful) but this action usually went with nothing said leaving us knowing we'd just had a non verbal tongue lashing!

He’s talked about this on the channel and in the comments before. If you know or remember when you made gestures, they were conscious not unconscious. He’s teaching unconscious/ non- deliberate behaviors. You wouldn’t know when you do them. If you asked Robert Downey Jr. when and why he raised his brows during this interview; he wouldn’t have a darn clue.

An interesting cultural thing (to me) I personally experienced was when I lived on an island in Micronesia back in the day and the men (mostly) almost extensively use their eyebrows for greetings and agreement. There was no hand waving “hello” or verbal “yes”. This was just my observation and I quickly learned to “speak” that way too.
I also had to learn how to not make flip-flops make the flip and flop sound as I walked because you could tell who was not from the islands by their walk.
I haven’t lived there for 30 years and this was a forgotten observation on my part. But I’m finding this stand alone concept video fascinating hope you make more like this. Thanks!

Great video! Thank you for taking the time to explain this in more detail and provide the sources of your information. So important! I'm so excited that you're creating a library for all your body language analysis. As a writer, it is our job to show, not tell our audience the internal and external conflict though the actions of our characters. It's so important to understand body language and gestures in order to describe them accurately to our audience so they fully understand what's really going on in the story. If you haven't been marketing your content to the writing community, you REALLY should! This information is truly invaluable. 💗💗💗

For me it goes back to evolution and human instinct. Yes it is about focusing attention, in order to increase the glare when looking at threatening animals or other humans that might be looking directly at you, in order to let them know you are looking directly at them in a heightened fashion and are ready to defend yourself. To ready for attack or defence. It has evolved since then into modern human behaviour and human to human communication.

Boy oh boy, was she expressive with the eyebrows, mouth, hands....it was all there. So, I realized that I've forever changed the way I take in an interview thanks to you. I felt I had a deeper understanding of what was really being communicated. Thing is I felt like I was seeing raised eyebrows paired with other things, and I wondered if that was what you mean by clusters? Would you be receptive to explaining clusters in more depth?

Also, I'm not a crypto investor, but with what has happened with Sam Bankman-Fried and how many people he has fooled, I was wondering if an analysis of body language and statement analysis could be of any value or not. Could an investor have avoided losing his money if he had known body language? I have seen, only, part of an interview, from a month ago, on nbc, and the fidgeting was amazing. Thank you, anyway, because your work and honesty it's illuminating. (And, also, forgive if my grammar is not a very good one. Great question. There is almost no circumstance nor any instance I can remember (and I say almost because I don’t like to speak in absolutes) where I’ve seen a single eye brow that was not intentional. We very rarely display emotions asymmetrically, very few exceptions and eyebrows isn’t one of them. If one eyebrow is going up I can ask if guarantee the person is doing it on purpose to signal curiosity, skepticism or something along those lines. It’s not an unconscious gesture.

What if the raised brows aren't a flash, but are held continuously as the person is speaking?
The conversational context, as well as I can recall, has usually been when the person is telling a story or discussing a point he feels enthusiasm for. These two contexts would fit in with the eyebrow flash, but the continuous upraised brows are something I have seen only in this one person. Thanks for any insights.

I can't speak to that other person, but I've noticed I have continuously raised eyebrows when I'm hearing something that has spiked my interest and the story maintains that level of high, in-depth attention throughout. I don't know if it matters, but I have ADHD, which makes focusing and even being interested in things very difficult, so when my interest is triggered, I'm all in! That may explain the eyebrows.

In fact I would say the polar opposite is more common, the brows furrow (go down and closer together) with confusion, skepticism or curiosity. One eyebrow up and one down is also common. Maybe what you’re talking about is more consistent with surprise like “I’m surprised you said that.” Like a “wait what?!” Gesture.

Sometimes you make me thing that the only real control we have over our faces is moving our eyes and opening our mouths. Mainly because it seems like emotions hijack the face so much.

My natural concentrating face is with a frown - so I taught myself as a counsellor to raise my eyebrows when listening carefully, becauses I learned that people were frightened of me otherwise.

Really interesting. This must be why we still have hair growing on our eyebrows, to accentuate them.

Absolutely. I’ll take a look at the segments I did on shrugging in last videos and see if there’s a good breakdown somewhere and if there isn’t the next time I cover shrugs I’ll go into detail and add it to the library 😊

I’m curious to know if your behavioral analysis would change if you knew someone is neurodivergent.
For example, it is common for autistic people to not hold eye contact or have self-soothing habits more often than a neurotypical person. Are there studies on these differences yet? Would be fascinating.
I’m autistic and have realized I have very different behaviors than neurotypical people, but I wonder if the science behind the actions are all structured in the same theories.

Hey there. Yes, the analysis would absolutely have to change for anyone with any condition that affects behavior. There is some research on non verbal communication in neurodivergent individuals but not enough for me to feel comfortable teaching it. I also wouldn’t assume that my read of someone on the spectrum is anywhere near accurate or valuable, i just don’t have enough knowledge or experience in that particular field. Thanks for watching 😊

Hi spinae, this is off-topic I’m not sure how to get a hold of you but I have a question maybe you would want to give your input on a movie The Forth Kind, I would like you to analyze this film and the actual footage of the woman that’s telling the story about these aliens. Maybe analyze whether she’s telling the truth or not or what you think about it the movie I mean. It’s supposed to be based on a true story it was very riveting and haunting. Thank you sorry for the off-topic

Would like to hear your take on Jonathan Majors' weird raised eyebrows and no surprise look. It seems to be his only facial expression in photographs, as if to say "Wha?" It is a very odd expression, everything from the forehead down is expressionless, and only the wrinkled forehead.

Hmm, I also see a lot of raised eyebrows in connection with disapproval and sarcasm. And not always does it feel like emphasis. Like, when somebody is obviously lying to you, and you answer disbelievingly, "Uhuh?" or "Really, is that so?" Yeah, I guess that does feel like "My eyes are on you."
Oh, and the "Ei" in Eibl-Eibesfeld is in both instances pronounced pretty much like the pronoun "I" in English.
