After all these years of thinking I was making people smile, I was actually making them hate me.
haha I love that
Yeah... I was telling myself that most of disgust and contempt appear as smiles at first look 🤯.
@@Vivi36566 That's the point. Most people try to fake a smile
@@leonaise7546 Sure... but I'm very naive... 😅
@@Vivi36566 Try not to be🗿👍🏼
I have Asperger Syndrome, And I cannot read basic expressions at all, however I am hoping by watching videos on both I can learn to know what a few mean.
this was helpful, thank you.

More power to you...
You will learn these soon
Same , the video is very good for that I think especially with all the explaining and stopping and rewinding
Keep it up Ingrid, you'll learn them soon. 😊 I also find it difficult to interpret most facial expressions. Practice and effort will surely lead you to frutiful results 🌸
In the second one with the female subject I think you missed *"fear"*
her eyes opened more and she swallowed and hardened her jaws like she was pressing the upper teeth against the lower ones (anxiety)
can be anger , as opening to closing of eyelids can be confused with closing to openings, distinguishes fear from anger and to give some more proof of anger can see the teeth pressing
I would find it more helpful with explanation how the person was stimulated (for example what kind of picture was he or she looking at when the reaction happened) and what was his reaction (person was angry and tried to hide it). It would make much more sense that way.
Yes, agree, you can see all of this during our live courses in person.
Where can we watch them? Thanks from New Zealand
@@PatrykWezowski1 This video is useless without giving the context. It's kind of deceiving to remove the key component of a content and tell people to buy it.
I have a feeling there picking on a cat to make that girl make those faces; just kidding lol
I just wanna know what they're watching😂😭
I just thought a lot of disgust was realy hapiness, show an example of hapiness microexpression that dont looks like disgust. Thx
Same.
my opinion. happiness is showed by cheek going upward and corner lips going upward in both side
Me too thought like that
@@daredicky9963 and when irs pure happiness, the eyes will also smile, the corner tip of ur eyes closest to the ear will go upwards and make slight wrinkles, thats happiness

I have to replay the micro expressions a few times but right now I think I'm starting to pick up more on contempt and digust. I got video 12 right which makes me happy. It's hard for me to watch the full face and not just pay attention to the nose and mouth and end up missing an emotion with the eye brows/eyelid and vice versa when I try to pay attention to the eyes.
I will try to do that, thanks.
I had a stroke many years ago. When I smile one side lifts up higher because I guess another muscle is lifting my lip. It looks like I have contempt whenever I smile.
I don’t think it necessarily always means contempt, you’ll sometimes see people smirk in admiration or reminiscence
great video to watch! ..very pleasant, and relaxing as it attunes us to our subtle muscle, which some say will in turn affect how we go around feeling. A couple of points was not in full agreement with.. u may find it useful: People come in with their habitual muscle movement pattern with its areas of stiffness depending on the ongoing experience of themselves vis-a-vis others and the world.. i find sometimes they will "reset" their face and have a brief expression of *themselves* .. if you know what I mean.
Fun observation : the uneven "contempt" seems to be related to the fact that the two brain hemispheres, related to each side of the body, aren't in consensus about what is being perceived...
i didn't know people feel contempt so often until i learned about micro expressions
I find these videos interesting. I believe the child also had a look of confusion, which looks very different in adults.
II always have tried to speak wirh a variety of people throughout my life, especially in the workplace, and because of that, I've learned to recognize different personalities, and have used that knowledge to have people open up to me. Several times, an individual who has worked there for years and had been silent started opening up and began participating in conversations with everyone only after I started speaking to them (usually after a work change made us sit near each other). I can usually understand what an individual is feeling just by looking at their expressions, but also knowing that person's personality and how their would likely react.
This is a wonderful and very detailed video! I love that I can't see what they are watching so I really have to just watch their faces.
Please keep looping the expressions. Its so insightful. Thank you.
anger and contempt is easy for me to spot. growing up in rough neighborhoods, I see this often before a person gets violent.
Contempt every time, show us something diferent!!!
I think the contempt microexpression is overdone because it's not that easy to detect, and people often mistake it for slight happiness/joy.
one of the really few videos on youtube where i got the feeling of active learning what gives something to my life ^^ (

Okay... But tell me please if we see contempt in his or her face so what's that mean ?
Brilliant video, well explained.
Can contempt also mean being proud of one self? Because it often follows surprise or anger, which are instinct reactions to something new and unfamiliar, but then contempt/pride is saying "Oh, it's nothing, I figured it out".
Correct, that is one of the possible variations.
Thank you for a wonderful lecture. 🙏🙏
Your videos are incredibly good
How can you have happiness and disgust at the same time?
nicedog1 depending on what they are seeing perhaps they are trying to contemplate themselves. Almost like when you're upset but smile to hide the sadness or in this case disgust. Especially if they are on camera and know they are being recorded.
Fatima Gamez Yes. I see what you mean.
He didn't. He first became happy, then disgust appeared. He didn't feel both at the same time
Maybe it's just nervousness. A lot of people smile or even laugh awkwardly when they are anxious and subconciously trying to calm themselves down. Smile is not always an indication of happiness I think.
maybe he's happy to see someone failing. the smile shows his happiness towards the person he feels disgusted about. Maybe in a situation where someone he hates falls down, or gets embarrassed, could this emotion follow?
Loved it sirrr❤❤❤❤
Loved the video and thx for this great efforts
Why does so much disgust/contempt look like amusement? Is humour not part of these analyses?
Who says humour isn't caused by seeing something disgusting or stupid?
they try to supress emotions
Good. Thanks for your help today
micro expression of upper (left) cheek reflex. His face was with no other movement, with high tension, but once I suddenly put my vision (both eyes, turning my face towards him) that reflex appears for 0.3 seconds approx.
They were five guys, I was alone in his territory.
Then I look to the other guy, the main one, and he shown me a fake smile.
I am curious how contempt and disgust happen at the same time. Will we always catch up on the negative ones then?
Happiness and disgust contradict themselves, though. How does that work?
Great video
Love your channel
Please make another videos until I understand👌👌
Hi Patryk, thanks very much for posting such as an interesting video with details explanation. I am a high school student currently working on a study to identify micro expressions when people lie. I would like to do experiment to capture all micro expressions related to telling lies. Could you please suggest a few methods to achieve my experiment? Thank you very much.
Check out a book called "The Ellipsis Manual ". Very in-depth explanations of everything by a professional
the surprise/contempt/anger ones look like amusement to me
yep same, not sure if i am retarded or the uploader is
Really helpful
thanks bro..keep up the good work
The second video, there was the swallowing motion as well... It may not be a "micro"-expression but it should help hint at the interpretation of the rest..
I like the video. But I find it over attributing things to contempt in a way? E.g I notice when I was doing exact those same expressions myself, I was’t necessary feeling contempt
Love learning about this stuff very interesting. my only suggestion would be to show what the people are being stimulated by. But still a great video, appreciate the knowledge -Respect
Thanks! How we create these videos is a detailed process we developed over the years and show/teach during our courses. It's not that simple as it looks.
these are the only emotions that exist? fear, surprise, anger, contempt, sadness, happiness and disgust?
These are the ones that exist as microexpressions.
Personally I consider shame a universal expression, but not a micro.
these are the most general ones that any human being has, no matter its culture/race/etc.. in others words, they are universal
I agree....he seems to think everything is one of these few. I saw different things in some of them than what his interpretations were.
Dude what are you showing these people? So much contempt
Maybe animal cruelty
@@crispsaturday a lot of anger would appear if that was the case, don't you think? C'mon.
It always theory but I respect it
This does seem a bit weird, since I doubt the emotions mentioned are the only causes of these expressions. I admit I'm not an expert, but wouldn't you agree that, for instance, the expression you connect to "disgust" could also occur when a person is just thinking "what the hell?" about something? That's not necessarily disgust.
thank you Sir for those video you're really helping a lot of curious mind out there including me just I want to have reach out about how many microexpressions that exist in totaly or is the list indefinite
correct me if i was mistaken but I believe the expression in Video 10 is more like shame/embarassement than sadness
Dont think you got everyone right. Can you provide a source? Where did you get the solutions? Or is that you subjective solution?
OMG, i'm autistic and I just can't see it until you put it on replay many times haha I'm really bad at reading non-verbal cue
In video #8, it doesn't seems to be sadness. Much more of a mouth shrug than sadness, comon gestural slip paired with the movement of the head.
From these expressions i was sad all my life😂😂😂
correct me if i was mistaken but I believe the expression in Video 10 is more like shame than sadness
Please can you tell me what video are you making them watch??
so, what i get from this video is that most folks are contemptuous. interesting
They're showimg them something that makes them feel feelings. Like someone kicking an animal or something. I would hope that would make people feel contempt amd disgust
@@stillmaninmotion6081 thanks for that clarification, you provided a cognitive roadblock to my similar judgements. Additional info = more thoughtful response
Why they showed many emotion together?
Was it about the series of their thought?
And when we do ask people questions will they show many emotion like this with one question?
Is it possible for you to analyse a 7 second clip to interpret the meaning of micro expressions??? I have a great submission to make
Am I wrong, it looks that it was also duping delight on the last person's emotions.
How do you have this people react like they do in these videos without faking emotions? Are they actors?
No, they are being showed a video that is specially made to provoke these types of emotions. For instance, to get someone to show sadness or contempt (especially if they love animals) show a video of the ASPCA commercials.
Alahaziah Kelly - i got it... thanks
@middy444 most people cant
Gracias
Video 7 Contemp looks like happiness because the sides look perpendicular
I'd like you to reveal at the end what they were reacting to.
We're happy to reveal that and much more during our online or live courses. We can't reveal everything for free on RUclips ;)
very subtle expressions, i was either not watching closely enough or quickly enough, and while i appreciate the slow motion after shots, i still could not determine the expressions in a useful way. I might just be too callous and self absorbed to want to see these expressions.
Where can i learn about all of these emotions, there are like 34 000 of em
Interesting... but how about showing some [more] positive emotions/micro-expressions as well...
Yes like attraction or suppressed attraction or arousal
Yeah, it would be nice to see some positive ones. Some of us tend to read facial expressions more negative than maybe we should.. Can you add some more positive ones?
So if someone has had bells palsy, how to you weed out a smile from contempt?
Video 5.
Id say 3 expressions. 1st anger, then surprise then contempt.
But thats me. 🤷🏻♀️
I just wish these would go beyond the basics and talk about their in depth emotions. They convey so much more than you talk about.

@@PatrykWezowski1Thank you for the response, I looked through it and I'll consider it.
Video 8.
Id have a hard time believe sadness.
Often I will turn my lips downward and nod too if I'm listening to someone tell me something and I just don't believe them.
the pressing of lips is anger not sadness right? video 11 sad and anger
I think I still don't understand the meaning of the word "Contempt".. and why is that so often in the video?
(I am german btw, if someone wanna explain me this)
I mistake always saddness and contempt? whats the difference actually? can someone explain?
muito bom.
POV: you're an alien in training for your trip to earth
The little girl didn't look down in the clip, but in the analyses she did. Am I missing something here?
I don’t understand contemp… is it like thinking “ok whatever”?
In video 3 those eyebrows, i make the same movement when im suprised, like "really? Did that happen?"
2:45 why can't that be anger? I chose anger, disgust and contempt, since lips press together in anger too right? I find it hard to find the difference between sadness and anger, both got chin up and both have tightening lips
Disgust is really hard to read and conflict with smiling when combined with contemnt
What were they reacting to?
Okay got it. Everyone is showing of disgust and contempt.
That little girl is totally sassy!!
That's my daughther ;)
What if my friend ALWAYS has a crooked smile (one side always is bigger than the other or has more emphasis)? Is she always feeling contempt and not fully happy?
Kindiah The right side of my smile with lips closed and opened pulls up higher naturally so this doesn’t work with me. 😏
his voice is pretty
Wow, it turns out I misread about every expression. No wonder I am terrible at being social.
Contempt is a hard one to understand for me,is it positive or negative ot both.
What does it mean to feel sadness and contempt almost simultaneously?
Wow..i must make people think I find them disgusting when I look at them.🤦♀️
How about swallowing in number 2. I see fear there, too
This Videos are awesome ;D
In 3rd vedio why the sign is of sadness instead of fear?
parece que seus vídeos são ótimos! no entendo precisam de legenda para o idioma português.
I don't trust these videos. It would be better to show yhe stimulus that was presented to the person after the assessment. I think these expressions can have subtle differences in meaning a lot of times. I mean, judging by this video humans only have one microexpression. Can you guess what it is?
What the hell , how hard it is to detect
Would you buy a present to your child who is showing contempt, anger and disgust at the same time?
12:52 somehow I don't agree with that. That wide lips down movemenent seems not to have to do with sadness
Video 5 - Suprise + Contempt? I really think it's more Suprise + Sadness = lips pressed, chin up. Or am I wrong? :) Thanks
Isn't the chin going up a sign of awkwardness?
It will help if we can see what they see
in video 14 isn't it disgust and suppressed smile. It feels like it because I can see wrinkles in the side of her eye which is a sign of a genuine smile. Can anyone confirm?
How are these emotions elicited from the subjects? For example, what was it that made the women have contempt and disgust shown on her face?
