  • In this video I walk you through step by step on how to achieve a bright blonde WITHOUT USING BLEACH! I am allergic to bleach so when I found a hi-lift hair color solution that worked for me I was ecstatic! In this demonstration I lighten my grown out roots with hi lift color and then apply a toner to cancel out the remaining warmth. I also explain how in the next session we will pull the hi lift color over this warmth and it will lighten it up to a pale blonde like the ends.

This was super helpful! Thank you! Can I make a request please? I’d like a tutorial on creating a teased root touch up with highlift, to blend in with my natural base. Like a super blended rooty balayage but no root shadow.

Good suggestion! It would be a little more difficult for me to find a model to do that with hi lift. I can definitely do it with bleach on a mannequin but that hair is treated so hi lift won’t work. I can look for models but in the meantime do a bleach one and explain the differences!

If you have dark hair and want to lighten without bleach but aren't necessarily wanting light blonde could you use a highlift and mix with a regular color? I understand its not using as intended and outcome would be less predictable especially on dark hair that lightens to orange just wonder if they are compatible enough for mixing

It would likely depend on the brand! I like to step outside of the rules as well, but I’d suggest doing a test strand to be safe. Try one with them mixed, and try another where you lighten with hi lift first and then tone down with the color. I’d use 40 vol for the hi lift and 6 or 10 vol for the color/toner!
