Vehicle owner fatally stabs would-be catalytic converter thief in South El Monte

- A man was stabbed to death while allegedly trying to steal a catalytic converter from a parked car in South El Monte early Friday morning.
The man, believed to be between 45 and 50 years old, was stabbed in the chest a few minutes after 2:30 a.m. and declared dead at the scene in the 11200 block of Thienes Avenue, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said in a news release.
Investigators believe the unidentified man and two others were trying to steal car parts from a vehicle parked in a driveway when a resident of the home came outside and confronted the alleged thieves.

His family is in danger. In this day and age, having to spend $3000 to get a new catalytic converter is literally taking the food out of the mouths of his family. That kind of loss could lead to other issues and even homelessness. Damn fine job indeed and wouldn't even be a thing if these were the kinds of consequences normally faced.

This is the way all catalytic converter thefts should end….. I had two of them stolen and the time and the money it took to get it replaced and take off from work and multiply that by hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of people.

The vehicle owner simply MADE A CHOICE, and aborted the inconvenient criminal. I don't see a problem with that.

Sounds more like he was protecting his property. The 3 theives thought they could over power him. Yes he should have called the police and they would most likely gotten away with his converter. I doubt if the police would have put out an all points bulletin for the suspects.

They were on his property committing a crime and when they tried to bum rush him thinking they could intimidate him, the one guy forfeited his life by his own choosen.

You have a far better chance getting away from an attacker with a knife then you do one with a gun. Bullets pierce through walls. They hit innocent people, they hit unintended targets, all the time. This scenario proves you don't need a gun to defend yourself. And since too many people are dying because of gun violence, it's our duty to make the sacrifice for the greater good. Innocent people are affected by guns. Children are being hit by bullets. Whole neighborhoods get terrorized by gun fire. Ban the guns, keep the knives.
