Orange County grandfather killed in hit-and-run rollover crash

- Loved ones are devastated after an Orange County grandfather was killed in a rollover crash and the suspect responsible remains at large. The victim was identified as Allen Yangkaou Lee, 67, according to the Irvine Police Department.
The crash happened on May 9 as Allen was driving northbound on Culver Drive towards Trabuco Road in Irvine at around 4:30 p.m. As he passed an intersection, the suspect jutted out and made a right turn against a red light at that moment.
The sudden movement of the suspect’s car forced Allen to swerve so he would avoid crashing into the suspect. The maneuver caused Allen to lose control of his car, causing a rollover crash. His vehicle collided with a center median, a tree and a light pole before landing on its roof.

I see drivers running the red light all the time. Last two weeks, I saw that happen about 10 times. Running a red light is only a $100 fine. An illegal red light turn is only $35. It's time we jack that up at least 10x the amount. Just like the stealing laws, if the penalties are not steep enough, criminals ignore them.

I live here and will look for that silver old civic with decals on the side doors when im driving around town. It may be a hybrid Civic with those style wheels too. In the video, there is a white model 3 tesla that has cameras in the next lane behind the white Mercedes E class at the light that might be able to record the plate on the civic. There is also a black model 3 in the turn lane but may be too far to get the plate in the right lane. Just gotta get the news out for more people to see this news and check their teslas.
what collision? the man was speeding through a yellow and had room to stay in that lane he swerved into. Why did he get back in that lane? Did he need to swerve that hard? Why is it the civic's fault if they made a legal turn at a red light?

The Culver Trabuco intersection needs to be changed to a no turn on red intersection, especially because the speed limit on Culver is over 50 mph. A driver can easily be cruising at 50 mph, get cut off by somebody not realizing the speed limit is as high as it is, and something like this happens 😢
I agree with you. But honestly you need to be a defensive driver regardless red light or not. At any intersection at all times.

Is it still a "hit and run" if no contact was made between the two cars? What is the Honda driver charged with fleeing the scene of an accident? Or Failure to yield?
For starters, running a red light, leaving a scene and no front license plate.

I may be wrong but there is not gonna be a sign there that says to not stop and roll thru on red but again, correctly if im wrong. A Cali roll at a light is technically illegal but you’re not gonna get a ticket if no one is near you.

I’m so sorry for your loss this is heartbreaking! But the driver of the other car didn’t actually hit the car thats had the accident but he did cut him off, but maybe that’s why they didn’t stop. I was in the same kind of accident and my car ended up on its side, but I had my dash cam that showed why I had to swerve and the lady who cut me off and caused me to have an accident had a dash cam too and on hers she’s heard driving and singing, can’t even tell that there was an accident happening behind her ,she had no clue what she had done. In this case I hope Hope the driver steps up. We at least got her license that’s how they found her.
Rate he’s advancing towards the car in the left lane + the little pie shaped island for pedestrians is enough to not see someone. He swerved to avoid it, went into the left lane and should’ve been able to slow down before hitting the other car. But again I think he was driving too fast to catch the light. Sad, but I don’t think the civic should be held on any serious charges. I live in the area and some of the intersections aren’t designed the best.
That’s sad , I was in a similar situation but I braked and hit the car instead of swerving to the next lane , the insurance gave me 90% on my claim because I didn’t do enough to stop the accident which was swerve to the left , if I had done so I would’ve probably hit another car .
My husband has been run off the road twice by 18 wheelers. Once on his Harley and once in my car. The officers told my husband that because no contact of the vehicles was made that he could not give the truck driver a ticket. Thankfully my husband only had minor injuries when he was forced off the road on his Harley and was able to lay it down in some dirt.
I saw a lot of people not stopping when turning right at a red light in CA, to save gas i guess. Everytime you stop and accelerate you use more gas. Gas is so expensive in CA, one thing leads to another...

Get a dashcam. Easy to install. Under $100. Yous insurance may reduce your premium. Aids police investigation.
I notice a lot of times when a driver swerves they end up doing more damage. Best to risk it and hit the other vehicle. Even today a bus driver swerved to avoid hitting an animal the bus overturned with 19 passengers on board.
I had to hit a cat who jumped right in front of my car while I was driving at the speed limit 40 mph. I felt terrible, but it could have been worse if I hit the brake sudden or tried to avoid it. 4 lane street...not sure if it was a stray cat or it lives in one of the apt complex les along the street...

The Police can use all the cameras in the surrounding crash site to identify this 2010-2014 Honda Civic silver 4-dr down the street without a problem. What goes in must come out unless the Honda owner also lived there in that particular Irvine area

Cars stop for cars make bad right turn on red lights like this all the time. If Mr Lee slowed down and stopped on yellow light as he should instead speeding up to avoid red light, it wouldn’t be happened. I think 50/50 faults at each party.
He was already in the intersection when the light turned yellow. This is a long intersection.
Even if they catch the person in the civic that caused the crash, they will only get cited for a ticket for not stopping at a red light when there was clearly a car crossing at the intersection. I highly doubt anything more will come of it. My prayers and condolences to the family.

I drive around there daily, many people drive 70 mph+ because the roads are big and feel like a highway. Expect people to run reds there. Looks like by dashcam footage the old man was speeding to make that yellow light. He was also about to run a red.

Truly sad that he lost his life but it looks like he was trying to beat the yellow light. If the speed wasn't high, he probably could have stopped in time. Based on that Civic's speed, frame by frame, and the speed of that blue vehicle, frame by frame, the victim was going quite fast. In the time he traversed the entire intersection, the other two vehicles barely moved...

I have seen a lot of car violence lately. Could this be another version. I was driving down Jambo and a Tesla was infant of me. Right as we got to the church on the left, the guy infront of the Tesla Slammed on the brakes. I slammed on mine ! No one was hit but that was an attack. Try Santa Ana, that Civi car is there !
