I've just recalled a tip for desktop icons: Hold Control + Mouse scroll up/down
It will change desktop icons size.
If you do the that shortcut in a file explorer, it will cycle through different views (small icons, large icons, list, details, mosaics, etc.).
It also works for doing zoom in apps like browsers, Word, Excel, etc.

That's was awesome video especially the (Window + ;) for the emoji menu. I used it to make my clock more customizable by adding 2 different emojis to The AM and PM symbols, so my clock on the Taskbar looks like this:
    07:54:02 AM 🌞
    03:21:09 PM 🌚
You can't edit this from the normal Settings. You have to go to Control Panel > Region > Additional settings... > Time > then look for the ( AM symbol: PM symbol: ) and add or modify whatever you want, and this a none destructive way that there is a Reset button in case you did something you don't like!

Thank you, Rich! These videos are great fun to watch, and I love learning/re-learning things for the OS. A lot of these I totally forgot about, and the middle mouse button one is completely new to me. If you hit the keyboard combo Windows + D it's the hotkey combo for show/hide desktop. That way you don't have to frantically search for the taskbar button while getting caught looking at things you don't want people to know about. 😉 On my system, since I'm using an Elecom Huge trackball with extra buttons, I have the emojis panel, and the snip tool set to macros for quick use. As far as getting the control panel, one really neat option is a reg edit you can install that will allow it to be put into your context menu. All you do is right click desktop, and it'll be in the list of entries you can click on. Super helpful if you need it quickly, and don't wanna piss about with the start menu, lol.
One thing I'm super curious about, and can't really get a definitive answer on is upgrading to Win11 from 10. Do I have to upgrade to 11 first, or can I do a clean install straight into 11? Also, how good/bad is 11 compared to 10? I've been reticent to using 11 because I'm worried about all the new ways they try to block you from auto updates being disabled, and the account thing. Mostly because I like to fire up my PC first, then go get coffee so my PC is loaded up, and ready for use with no lag time. I don't like having to put a password in before Windows is loaded because it's wasted time.

The Win+D hotkey is much better than using the Hide/Show Desktop buttton these days because we're more apt to multiple monitors. With a single monitor, you could just throw you mouse over to lower right of the screen and it will park on the button. With multiple monitors, this isn't going to be the case depending on how you've arranged your displays.

If you're like me, and have a lot of icons on your desktop, but then you need to share your screen in a web meeting (i.e. Teams, Zoom, etc), you'll want to clear them out. Not sure if this is the same on Windows 11, but it is in 10.

DO NOT store important files on your desktop! Shortcuts to them only, people! My story: Setting up a new computer - have a massive folder with all my work to a game I mod. Put it on the desktop, and OneDrive immediately attempted to upload the whole thing. Of course, with a 5GB limit for non-paid, it got only a portion leaving me with upgrade popups and annoying icons all over the place. I attempted to remove the upload directly from OneDrive, but here's the thing - OneDrive will not let you do that. It will erase the files from the cloud AND from your hard drive - PERMANENTLY! I tried just moving material to a spare drive, AND THE DESKTOP FOLLOWED ME! I could not invoke the desktop without having that drive engaged. LSS, I eventually got everything back in place, found out in OneDrive settings how to unsync the computer and maybe a better way of deleting, but thank god for backups (BACKUPS people!). So shortcuts only on the desktop, assuming that's even a safeguard.
In 25 years, I have never had malware do to me what MS did. Who needs a virus when the fine folks who brought you Win 11 can wreck your life for you. We need to stage an all-out revolt against this predatory behemoth - or cross our fingers that the Linux community can get their act together and bring us a defacto alternative without 300 forks...

Isn’t there still that bug going back to at least XP that causes slowdowns if you have too many desktop icons? Or did they finally fix that? Cause last I checked it was still true as of early win10. It’s almost like windows renders the icons even when you have a full screen window, on top of the inefficiency that is redrawing/reprocessing the desktop icons frequently enough to cause slowdowns when it’s literally just a fancy folder…

So thanks for tipping me off about it! :D

Not everyone likes hybrid shut down. If you hate hybrid shut down you can disable it. It is called "fast startup" in Win 11 and can be accessed from the control panel, power options, choose what the power buttons do, change settings that are currently unavailable. Simply uncheck the fast startup box and save changes. Once fast startup is unchecked, shut down works the same as a restart.

    • @CyberCPU
      @CyberCPU  Год назад +2

There's an even easier way to shut it off. In an admin CMD window just type
      powercfg /h off
That will turn hibernation off and in turn disable the hybrid shutdown.

@@CyberCPU I remember Microsoft originally released Windows 10 with a policy of automatically/silently re-enabling Fast Startup with each major update if users turned it off, but they quickly relented once it became clear that some users' systems really didn't play nicely with Fast Startup (e.g. I know someone who couldn't dual boot Linux or even get Windows updates to work properly with Fast Startup enabled).

@@CyberCPU I think a lot of it was indeed growing pains, e.g. some updates used to reset my default browser, PDF viewer, image viewer etc. and now this very rarely happens. Usually this got put down to bugs at the time. But the re-enabling Fast Startup was originally by design, as a way of trying to push everyone into using it. I remember seeing Microsoft confirm this in several places, claiming that it was a by-product of the way updates were done.

Another one I learned in the last year is to right click on the start menu, then there is a menu for shutting down or signing out of your system. I hate how windows hid the sign out and the multiple clicks you have to do in the start menu to shutdown or reboot.

    My tips:
Search in the start menu “preformance” and now click the option “Adjust the appearance of performance of Windows”
In the window that appears (after UAC) click “Adjust for best performance”
Now you just want to click apply at the bottom, then OK.
In my experience, windows itself will use less RAM giving you more for your programs.
Next, search “Mouse pointer” then open “Change the mouse pointer display or speed”
Now you can turn off “Enhanced pointer persecution” which is mouse acceleration, although you should use your mouse software to do that if present in the software.
Now click on the “Pointers” tab at the top of the window.
Now click where it says “Windows Default”
A drop-down will appear, now you just want to click “[ NONE ]”
Make sure pointer shadow is turned off also.
Now just click apply and then click OK.
You just reverted your mouse pointer back to the one used in much older versions of windows.

Instead of pinning Control Panel to it, after you search for it, you can also right click on it and pin it to your Start popup. I wondered what happened to the sound on and sound off for Windows Startup and shut up. I didn't know about the Registry Edit, so I made said modifications. I don't know why Microsoft keeps choosing to do these things to annoy the... ...out of its customers. Thank you for that. Dumb that we have to remember to do this on all accounts and every time we reset our computer or reinstall Windows. At least WinAero Tweaker allows backups to specific registry keys to be saved, but who will remember ?
On Windows 11 you can get to Control Panel under "System Tools" that is in the taskbar. You can also pin it somewhere that way I also use it and "God Mode" as icons on the desktop. Having said all of that, my desktop is very neat too. 9 icons or 10 if you count "Learn More About This Picture" which I only keep to go to the next wallpaper if I don't like the current one.
