NorthernLights I’m aware of what science it is. As you stated in the previous comment you deleted (I’m assuming after you realized it overlapped with the definition of obscurity), the science of linguistics typically goes “unknown”, especially in this depth, by the general public. It’s not common knowledge even for the vast majority of educated individuals unless they chose that subject area to study and specialize in.
@@kammyhornsby2094 your point is quite obvious when he starts naming the stuff, I can't be the only one who never heard any of those linguistic technical terms before... I didn't even know there was such terms
NorthernLights is correct, though. A well established science that's available at nearly every university isn't an "obscure thing". It's just an area of expertise. In the same sense, medicine isn't an "obscure thing", but only experts know ridiculous amounts about it.
Exactly!! One of the primary definitions of the word of obscure is “not well known”, which suggests that something that is obscure is not common knowledge. My mother-in-law studied linguistics as her major, and not even she can speak this knowledgeably on the subject. It is not common knowledge, or “well known” subject matter for the vast majority of people (including some specialists). I’m not sure why people feel the need to behave in such a dunce manner for the sake of being a know-it-all. If someone were to know an incredible amount about Anglo-Irish literature or Ornithology, the fact that the subject they’re so knowledgeable about has a name does not make the less commonly known topics within that field any less obscure.
Kammy Hornsby I would disagree with the word choice as obscure have certain connotations that don’t necessarily fit with the feeling I think you’re trying to encapsulate. A better word might be niche since it’s such a specific area of expertise but obscure would imply random and inconsequential like knowing obscure facts about underground Peruvian artists.
With that first one, the sounds aren't terrible but it seems overenthusiastic to me. Australians with non-Anglo backgrounds tend to stick pretty closely to their ethnic accents. You're definitely not going to get the really distinctive "mayte", "loife" vowels (which even plenty of Anglo Australians don't do anymore). In general, that sort of Crocodile Dundee (broad Australian) accent is disappearing because most people live in the major cities and that's just not how English is taught in schools. Kate Winslet really nailed the "general Australian" accent, which is how most people actually talk.
It seems that the general (not broad) Aussie accent is really difficult for most to get (easy for me- it’s my native accent). Strangely enough, I’ve had so many (mostly Americans) ask me if I’m British! I could pick that Dev Patel wasn’t an Aussie- mostly because he did mix up a broad and general accent. But Kate was flawless- and also had that slight British intonation that Aussies had in the past (which would be easy for her). That particular intonation is still present in the refined Australian accent, but most of us don’t have it anymore. I’ve always wondered if the very “flatness” of the Aussie accent is what makes it so hard- it’s easier to add than to subtract. And I’ve also conversely wondered if that’s why Aussie actors tend to be considered better at accents than most (think Margot Robbie)- we add when we’re doing another accent- move the tongue more here, open your mouth more there...
I don't think most Americans can easily distinguish between British and Aussie accents (unless they've traveled there). The sounds that really stand out to us as being "British" are the "a" vowel and a lot of silent "r" vowels.
I’m so happy you did Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes accent! I think it’s so nice to hear and so well done. When I first found out that wasn’t his real accent I was so amazed and impressed, it was hard to believe until I heard his real accent. Even then it was astonishing. The funniest thing is that the scene critiqued about Tom Holland’s Queens accent was actually ADRed because his accent slipped and nobody caught it until they were editing the film 😂
As a Vietnamese I like how he analyzes the accent cuz people may said that her accent is racist or stereotypes but this is actually how my friend and some of my relatives speak English. Many people i guess haven’t heard a Vietnamese speak English so they’ll find the accent very strange and they’ll think its very stereotypes. So kudos to him.
Tức Thuỷ I totally agree. many native Vietnamese speaking English sounds like it could be rude, or stereotypical, but growing up in a big Vietnamese family of immigrants, they sound a lot like this. Those who hear native Vietnamese speakers speaking English do tend to chuckle, because it does have an interesting sound to it, I suppose is how you would put it.
The guy is great and his analysis is really interesting. But what sets this video on another level is the creative editing where the editor takes lines out of the movie to create a conversation with the dialect guy. Super creative and that makes the video really pull you in.

I’m not sure if it’s just hard to do or if people just don’t put much effort into it.
I can do one, but I'll admit it's very hard. Somedays, I can convince others, including fellow Eastern Europeans that I'm a native speaker, and other days I sound like a rejected cast member of SNL trying way too hard to be funny and cute. I grew up watching him as The Prince and as Barleigh on the Blackadder series on my local PBS station and then as various characters on A Bit of Fry and Laurie. I personally find it nearly impossible to view him as an intelligent American after all of the years enjoying him as a British buffoon. Although I will agree that his American accent is freakin' amazing 95% of the time.
JustMe You should search for a British comedy called Blackadder. Hugh Laurie plays several of the dumbest characters ever and does a fantastic job of it.
+Joysuriya Hagjer As much as I want this too, i think that was just Hugh tapping into his comical, mocking British accent that he used often on A Bit of Fry & Laurie. It was a funny scene and House is so dour, that Hugh probably just took the opportunity and ran with it.

He's gorgeous and his voice is so calming. I could watch/hear him speak all day long. Also, Tom did a great job with the American accent, I only realized that he's British after I watched an interview, after I watched Spiderman: Homecoming and I was shook.
As a native Australian, I completely agree that Kate Winslet's Australian accent was perfect. If I heard her on the phone, I wouldn't be able to tell she wasn't Australian.
I'm a kiwi and I dunno if Australia is the same but I pronounce dance as "DARNce" in stead of "DANce" and that's the only thing I noticed :) but otherwise it was a perfect accent
Kate Winslet's Australian accent is quite something, I'm Australian myself and forgot she wasn't Australian when I was watching the trailer for The Dressmaker.
I think that's probably true, because it certain parts of Australia there's a decent amount of crossover between British/Australian accents. I'm Australian but when I'm overseas I'll often get mistake for a Brit because my voice is not quite as typically Aussie. I think it also helps in that if a Brit slips up a bit it doesn't sound so out of place than a hard R or other identifying American sound. grafixgurrl Anyhow to n untrained person like me, I find British and Australian actors do be pretty good at American accents
@@christopherliang6879 Most non-US actors manage a reasonable midwestern or Californian accent because they've grown up hearing that accent all their life in movies and TV. It is the accents that are rarely heard in media that I think are hardest to learn.
I'm watching the House series (for the 3rd time), partly bc I'm so impressed with Laurie's acting, esp his American accent. However, there's one episode in which he slips up, saying "bean" instead of "ben".
Love Hugh Laurie, I felt his accent was kinda still settling in with the first season of House, second season improved further, and by the third season onwards it was just 100% totally natural and flawless.

As an Irish person watching so many actors fail at our accents, I think ours must be the hardest to nail. (We also have sooo many regional variants- so there really is no 'generic' irish accent). The only actor I've seen really nail it is Cate Blanchett in Veronica Guerin
And Sarah Gadon in Alias Grace

I love when people know a ridiculous amount about obscure things. Now I’m going to binge these vids
I was really blown away by Kate Winslet’s Australian accent after hearing all the bad/mediocre ones before her.
Too bad the movie sucked...
Also, I really liked the movie. I wasn’t expecting the ending (having never read the book). But I still liked it.
Hugh does an amazing job in House. The first half of the first season he struggles a bit, but once he gets there he rarely falters.

co0kii I wonder if it’s easier for someone who’s English to affect the Australian accent...
