- Dialect coach Erik Singer once again takes a look at idiolects, better known as the specific way one individual speaks. This time, Erik is focusing on actors's portrayals of US presidents. How close was Josh Brolin to capturing George W. Bush in W.? Is Jay Pharoah's version of Obama true to life? Is it even possible for an actor to accurately portray George Washington?

Hey everyone! Previously, Erik took at look at Daniel Day-Lewis's performance as Lincoln and Alec Baldwin's SNL Trump impression. Both can be seen in this earlier episode: ruclips.net/video/lZSCGZphjq0/видео.html

It’s impressive how he’s able to say an impression sucks, so politely.
"to me, it just isn't there"
So true! Very well put
Yes, it is not easy to master the art of insulting.
And he always points out when he believes an actor wasn’t provided with enough time to rehearse or prepare an accent.
Gilbert Gottfried as Abraham LIncoln: "Hiya schmucks! Four score and seven years ago, I was BROKE! JUST LIKE YOU!"

"In this case, the actor didn't have a lot of time to prepare." Translation: "This one sucked."
That's an interesting thing to notice. In the first couple of videos, he was more critical of them and would often put down the actors' performances directly, whereas in this it seems he's directly trying to avoid being negative.
That Roosevelt was pretty awful.
Sure but it implies more sympathy. It's more a "It sucked but I know the filming process and that this is not the actor's fault, but more of a consequence of having not enough prep time or no accent coaches at hand."
If he’s an actual acting coach he’s probably worked in a lot of films to know how the process actually works most of the time. Just sayin.
he probably wants to put the blame on a lack of support for an accent rather than just making it seem like the actor is bad with accents. for example some actors have shown up multiple times in these series with some performances much better than others, and erik acknowledges that

Honestly, these videos really got me into accents and linguistics in general. I am now considering pursuing a career in linguistics, so thanks, Erik!
I did English language at college.
Had to quit cause of personal problems but I’m so sad I’m not doing it anymore.
I adore linguistics!
@caro d. You don't have to learn another language to study linguistics! If your mind works anything like Erik's and you can follow his thought process rather intuitively, then I say give it a shot! Speaking as a linguistics graduate!
@the1invisbleJ what do you use your linguistics degree for?
Gilbert Godfried as Lincoln: "PERFECT."
Saying that with a straight face really does show how much he's really mastered his craft haha
What do you mean? Gilbert Godfried's Lincoln _was_ perfect.
I died laughing at that
Ironically, Lincoln was commonly described as having a shrill, high-pitched voice, like a tea kettle
We don't have an example of Lincoln talking. How can it be perfect?
I would love a breakdown of Meryl Streep as the late British prime minister Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. It would be interesting to see your take on the actual speech training Tatcher got and how Streep portrays that in the movie. Also actors playing people with speech difficulties such as stammers like in The King's Speech.
I would love to see that too, but if I remember correctly, a woman on RUclips who was breaking down fake British accents in shows and movies went in-depth into it.
You should have added the clone high JFK. It’s clearly perfectly accurate.
That's a perfect example of over exaggerating for the sake of comedy and I must say is pretty good
“I-yer-EH”
its because it wasn't an actor, JFK voiced himself
as much as it sounds "exaggerated" it's also what a regular teenager would sound like. a higher voice, faster words, more vowel tension. basically, it was perfect.
"Some of us are trying to nail Catherine the Great over here. Or should I say Catherine the So-So?"
These accent videos might be my favorite videos on RUclips.

George Washington had extremely painful dentures that he wore all the time. Added with the fact that he didn’t want people to know he was missing teeth he would not open his mouth very widely as to not show his dentures and to avoid the pain. It’s also why he’s often shown frowning in paintings because he was constantly in pain.
he also often is shown frowning because he had to actively hold his mouth closed because the dentures would basically pop his mouth open.
Yup and he also was insecure about his breath so he chewed on mints , drank mint green tea and brushed his tongue with mint leaves
@@thepubknight6144 I’ve read a few books on Washington now and insecurity seems to be a common theme for him. No doubt in part to snobs like John Adams who looked down at those who weren’t formally educated.
Kennedy really is the most difficult person to impersonate. He likely has the most well known and iconic voice.
Yes! But at the same time he sounds kinda normal hence its hard haha.
It's that accent that makes it particularly difficult

Gilbert Gottfried's impression of Lincoln is perfect 😂😂😂
Was the choice to highlight Bill Clinton saying "Me...too" over and over again a conscious choice or a rather hilarious coincidence?
😭
Great catch.
There is a Lincoln impersonator in my hometown who lives it. He is the biggest expert on Lincoln, second to none, and an avid collector of his writings and those of Lincoln's contemporaries. He looks almost nothing like him when he works his handyman day job, he is maybe 5'8" and rotund, but when he is in character, he is indisputably Abraham Lincoln. Sometimes he goes to restaurants in full costume after public appearances, and just enjoy a meal as Lincoln without breaking character. My husband, previously a cook at one of these restaurants, didn't know that this gentleman did public appearances and lectures for historical events (this is New England, so it's rather out of place) and for years just thought the man had a colorful split personality.
That’s incredible!
For some reason, I find these videos both fascinating and relaxing. Thank you for the intriguing content. Also, I cannot help but notice how BLUE his eyes look in this video, especially brought out by the jacket color. Nice choice!
