Miss Universe 2023: Dark Horse & Underrated Contenders TPN#69

  • The last couple of years at Miss Universe have seen a few pleasantly surprising placements to go along with some shock exclusions. So, for the 72nd Miss Universe which is just getting underway in El Salvador, who are the dark horse contenders that may just pull those surprises?
I’ve picked out 10 delegates who may well find themselves in the semifinals - or even better - without a strong sash or a massive amount of hype surrounding them.
By no means is this a definitive list - if you have any other dark horse contenders in mind, leave them (respectfully) in the comments below.
    #missuniverse2023 #darkhorsecontenders #PageantPreview
    1:30 Australia: Moraya Wilson
    2:31 Bahrain: Lujane Yacoub
    3:26 Cameroon: Issié Princesse
    4:13 Chile: Celeste Viel
    4:57 Curaçao: Kim Rossen
    5:56 El Salvador: Isabella García-Manzo
    7:07 Great Britain: Jessica Page
    8:08 Pakistan: Erica Robin
    8:59 Singapore: Priyanka Annuncia
    10:04 Spain: Athenea Pérez

To be honest, I think it would be a bit hard for the dark horses, but there is still a chance that one could qualify, or even win.

Miss Universe 2023 is Philippines because of the coincidence I learned from Miss International of 2015 2018 and 2023 won by Venezuela and Miss Universe won by Philippines in the years 2015 2018 and 2023 thru Mitchelle Dee? I hope for the Philippines,,, ❤️🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭

It's so refreshing to see candidates who don't have strong sashes being given some attention. Watch out for Italy as well, a STEM scientist whose confidence and advocacy could make a strong enough impression during the interview round to make her a surprise semifinalist. Thanks from the USA!

Hello from Brisbane! My favourite thing about pageants is seeing a dark horse upset! Angola's win was my favourite of all time. In terms of dark horses, I definitely think Australia may do well. I also have Egypt on my radar because of how well-spoken she is. I've also got Pakistan, Ireland and Equitorial Guinea for dark horses. Ultimately though I think it will be a battle between France, Thailand and USA as the strong contenders.

@Toooo_Awkward agree. As if beauty pageants are really that relevant, maybe in some areas but not generally: eg. Actual global politics - I haven't heard of any policies influenced by a pageant!
Besides Beauty pageant doesn't mean majority of a population (masses) are equally or nearly beautiful as their winners. Ex Pia & Catriona's are mixed, physically they're not truly representatives of mostly Austronesian Filipinos.

This year I see a lot of strong contenders from non sash countries and it is about time the new owner do the walk. A fair competition where everyone gets an equal chance because of how she preforms during the preliminaries , not where she is from, or how successful her predecessors have performed in previous years. That is why MU was so successful till the early 2000s…. Before the powerhouses totally took over.

Great video as always. I keep on thinking of your historic video, the contestants that are making history this year like Nepal or Colombia or the Netherlands. I have to ask you a question. At this juncture do you think the organization already has contestants that they think will place already? I often wondered if it begins to form at such an early stage of the pageant. I remember when Spain was crowned, and I thought to myself this woman is amazing. A singular type of beauty and I was thinking she is going to place. Same thing with Australia. The only content that I consume is RUclips and I often wonder if you see much more on insta and other platforms. I just have a feeling that this year is somehow going to be really different and the top 16 or top 21 is going to be really exciting. I am seeing Michelle Dee front and center looking amazing and I happily seeing Miss USA which is so nice for me again this year. Dominica Republica is so amazingly beautiful that I often find myself staring at her images. Does that mean she is a contender? I can't believe it's only two weeks away! Take care and look forward to your though provoking content. XO Joseph from the US

Hello my friend! Always wonderful to hear from you and to read your thoughts on the “topic of the day”! I would hope the org is making use of these couple of weeks to come in with an open mind as to who deserves a place. I think attitude and demeanour should play a huge role, in addition to aesthetics and the prelims efforts. We don’t have proof of it, but it’s widely assumed that Mariam Habach didn’t place because of a bad attitude, despite some impressive on-stage prelims performances. I’m glad I had a few requests to do a video on the dark horses (I initially thought I wouldn’t have the time, but I made the time!), as it gave me a chance to research a little deeper into some of the lesser known queens. While the past couple of years have been shocking in terms of the exclusions and the surprise semifinalists, looking back on them both they were great selections and I’m glad the MUO isn’t relentlessly sticking with the same old favourites. I don’t think (or at least I hope) it’s enough just to be stunningly beautiful - there needs to be substance, which I feel was reflected in some of the selections last year, i.e. some of the semifinalists not necessarily being those that had a lot of hype because they may not have been the most beautiful or glamorous. As I find myself saying a little too much in my videos - we’ll have to wait and see! I hope all’s well with you and you’re having a great weekend!

That’s very gracious of you to say! I agree a victory by an unheralded country would be simply wonderful!

@@PageantNerd I mean.... It is amazing that.... USA won 9 crowns..... All deserving..... But imagine a country's first victory of Universe crown.... Would be amazing.... And then they really feel and getting fond of pageant...and other weak shash countries also feel motivated 🙌
