I paid £500 for my 2005 Porsche Cayenne with the same VR6 3.2 engine. It needed some tinkering and parts but has been a great car for the last 12months I've owned it. We bought a cool little T@B320 caravan to tow behind it and I've done the NC500. I'm building it into an overlander and are planning a Scandinavian roadtrip in it.

Gearbox oil is 3390 - not normal ATF, Mannol do a version that's been in my Volvo's for a few years and now the Cayenne.
Transfer box oil is bit of an odd one (can't remember off the top of my head what I used) but wasn't expensive. Diff oils are 75/90w.
My front diff bearings were noisy, splitting the suspension and dropping the subframe to swop the diff isn't financially viable if you're paying garage labour rates but was an easy weekend job.
My propshaft was knackered - Meyle do a rebuild kit but I found a little used/nearly GKN (OEM) shaft on eBay for £120 which along with the front diff replacement removed any mechanical noises.
We'll built easy to work on cars - but quite complex and expensive if you can't spanner yourself.

I have the Porsche Cayenne 955 with that engine in & to be fair they share a lot in common but you nailed it Matt, it is the sweet spot between old almost unusable 4x4s and modern SUVs. If you can get over the costs they make a great everyday car as you can do literally everything in them. Oh and I massively overspent on mine, £4,600 to buy and another £2.5k on top so don't feel too bad!

    • @lagshikanu6374
      @lagshikanu6374 18 часов назад

@tikkathreebarrels Yes and no really - the cayenne uses the engine and some components & other parts from the VW group so it's not a 'true' porsche but there is a notable difference between the two in terms of overall refinement. However if you just want that cracking engine and are not really fussed about the looks & refinement difference then the VW is a much better buy.
For me though I am happy to pay the premium for the cayenne & I really do love the fact it's a bit silly & shouldn't really exist these days. Life is too short not to just buy a car that makes you smile.

Light switch is about 15 quid from china, you can also get new window switches for a few quid. When it comes to the centre console buttons, you either buy a set of vynil wrap stickers for them or get the buttons replaced. Either of these options would massively improve that interior 👌

    Great video and car.
I bought a cheap (by the standards of my country) Touareg of the same Mk1 pre-facelift generation with the same engine about 4 years ago. It had been poorly kept by its previous owner, and was a bit of a dog reliability-wise when I first got it (wound up stranded in the middle of nowhere with a failed wheel sensor locking the wheels, and no Internet coverage to be able to look up if there was any way to disable it via a fuse or something).
I did the auto transmission, 4WD system service, new brake discs and pads, new coolant, fresh service (and then regular servicing from there) and have had a few other repairs e.g. clock spring sensor and most notably doing one of the fuel pumps which had been done by the previous owner but they had used some knock off part to save $ ... the fuel pump was covered by the extended warranty I had purchased although it needed replacing about a week before the warranty expired so it was a fight with the company to get them to pay the $3000 for the repair work.
Will be up for new tyres before EOY and another service as well.
Now it has been looked after and 'caught up' somewhat on neglected maintenance it's a great vehicle and I intend to keep it a very long time, so pleased to see another one fixed up.

I like these. Almost a Porsche Cayenne for VW money. You should have fitted 4 matching part worn tyres though. They use haldex 4 wheel drive on these and that relies on matching tyres to work properly

It was either Paul Cowland or Drew Pritchard from Slavage Hunters Classic Cars, or it was Mike Brewer who had one done for a Maserati that had the sticky dash I think. It looked brand new when it was finished. Maybe if you messaged them they’d give you a nod

The way you describe the car while driving and then finally talking about keeping it out of the weather, reminded me of GTA days, where you stral cars from NPC's who drive them very slow, and when u floor it, they fly and you decide to keep it 😂

those VR6 Engines are brilliant engines. Especially in a Golf R32! also in regards to the noise, has the Haldex system been serviced?

It looks like one of those new Porsches from some angles. Very desirable, even when it says '53' on the new reg-plates it's crying out for.

Light switches cost half nothing from VW. Wheeler Dealer did an episode on a Maserati during which Brewer found a company to fix the buttons like those you pointed to. Thanks for the video.

Mike Brewer once featured a car / computer electronics company that specifically restores switches to like-new with laser technology. I can’t remember the episode though. Why not message Mike, surely he’d tell ya 👍🏻

Are you looking for some fresh buttons for the dash? That's where I like to start when refreshing a car, as it's very obvious. Edit: Never mind. You've mentioned it. 🙂 (Does Ebay not have good replacement ones?)

I had the V10 R50 diesel version of the same car, was a nice car.
Just a shame I had to get rid of it due to oil leaks and every job on the engine required the engine to be removed.

Matt, you can buy stickers to do the switches but I would replace them ,it’s hand cream or aftershave type things that destroy them, I had one 7 years but mine were perfect even at 150k miles, it was a great car but the gearbox or transfer box started whining and I had to part with it, traded it for a Nissan Murano which I never loved , got a 2010 ML now 😊

Matt ask Mike Brewer about the bottoms he used a company to fix the sticky set done on a Ferrari I think. They sprayed them white then black then a computer etched them to make them like new

An SUV Phaeton is the toerag😜 to me, & that isn't isn't a insult, 👇its a complement. 👍 The metallic red paint looks in tip-top condition! 👍 a set of large mudflaps would also improve the looks, & serves a purpose as well IMO. & Was it available with roof bars? No! That would be adding more unnecessary expense, plus you want to sort out the faded paint switchgear as well.

Thanks, I have an old car that I will probably never use again, it still has an MOT but is very scruffy, 18 years old , I would only dare sell it for spares and repair, so decided to take £250 from the scrappy and get rid, seems a shame, but it would only hang around and never be used.
Yes your Touareg is very nice and I would use it.
