How refreshing, a video not trashing a car, which is very easy to do. Every car has faults. Especially an older one. And knowing how bad the conditions are that car is living in (U.K. weather and roads), it's actually surprising to hear all this. Thanks for not going the direction everyone else on youtube is going.
It's great to see the cayenne back on the channel Joel. I have a massive soft spot for them. Let's face it Joel you've made a smart decision with the 3.2 as it's the most reliable least problematic 955 engine. So it doesn't suprise that it's served you well. I understand your itching for that bit more power though I get that, them L322 TDV8'S are getting a reputation for being the worst engines in the L322. Many of them I see for sale the TDV8's are up for spares or repairs, seized engines, blown turbos ect... Then there's the rusty rear arches/sills to repair... I adore L322 they are lovely. But let's all be realistic they are the biggest money pit you can buy. You never get that feeling of real reliability. You know in your mind they are going to break down or even give you numerous expensive bills. It's probably why they are incredibly cheap to buy they are starting to show their age now and people can't afford to keep pouring their savings into it as you'll never ever get that money back. It's sad really 😂.... But people want to be seen in a range rover so that's a price you pay.... And yes I have actually owned 2 L322's so I can confirm they are just terrible. They are like the Peugeot of 4X4's 😂
Great Video, my 2009 957 Cayenne diesel is currently up to 180,000km and has been super reliable. Wonderful car with superb on road manners and superior off road ability.
@@JohnBaxendale It's indeed less common on a 4.4 but I was out of luck I guess. Turbo failure on a 3.6 almost always has its origins in EGR problems that cause clogged vanes. In my case oil somehow got into the intercooler and was sucked up by the engine which led to turbo failure. Body had to be lifted so a high labour cost.
I had a 955 3.2 for 7 years. Bought it with 50k and sold at 140k towed a caravan around Europe and three times skiing in the alps. Loved it and never let me down. Yes I probably over serviced it but never went wrong. Brakes every year at £500 per axle and expensive tires but it’s going to cost that.

Nothing beats it to drive , fully loaded , fast , not horrendous on fuel and super comfy both as a driver and passenger Welcome to come and take it for a spin Joel to help with your decision 😉
Fantastic Joel this is what it is all about. Keep it going Joel throughout winter and then perhaps move it on. Although a RR sounds great, just remember how you felt when you had the green one and the diesel one. This is a much better car. May I suggest a A6 Allroad for your next car ?
That's the problem with forums. If 300 people say my car was a unreliable nightmare it looks bad. They ignore the fact that that the other 50,000 buyers were basically happy. Just have to try and buy one that hasn't been abused.
I don’t own a Cayenne, but I’m delighted to hear you yet again mention that a majority of these cars are actually quite reliable; if you only read a few comments on some trashy forum you’ll get a bunch of Lexus people complaining about RR’s being unreliable. These people have also (mostly) never owned a Range Rover. This is coming from someone who owns a QP5 and have had many Range Rover’s, and a new Defender 90….
Would be interesting if you buy the L322 4.4 TDV8. As far as I'm aware you've already driven 3 different L322's (and owned 2) with different engines. So would be nice to see the comparison! You inspired me by the way to buy an L322. Best decision ever!
For me, as an owner of a Turbo, mechanical sympathy is key with these, just like it should be with all cars, and maintenance - so... Well you have gotten your car to be reliable and you trust it, and now have an understandable itch to try something else, it's the idea of have something new to you that is exciting. The basic choice here is now cost, you are in a good place (apart from the fuel thing) and you could go for another car, but you being you, you are going to have to go through all the preventative maintenance things again, at a cost, and who knows what will come of that... Ultimately it is just a question of how much you want to spend. A good well cared for vehicle will look after you, an abused one will punish you, and the people who do that always blames the vehicle... I look forward to where the winds of fortune take you...
Keep it - I have the exact same car on a '56 plate & I will confirm that the costs can get a bit saucy but then again, you kind of know it will when you buy it. For example my wipers broke the other day & it is £800 to get the whole issue sorted with a fit etc. If that was something cheap like an Insignia it would be about half that price for the same job. However, dont let it put you off as these really are fantastic & I would say the V6 is the better option to avoid some of the other really painful issues they can have (and 250bhp is fine for daily driving, I never feel short on power really). It is much more interesting than the equivalent range rover as well!
Something that isn’t taken into account a lot, and should be. If I have to spend 2k a year on my 2001 jag xkr, I can live with that. Because the 330e I sold recently, lost me just shy of 1k a month on depreciation. Granted if I kept it for an extra year the depreciation per month would be less, but still a hell of a lot more than 200 per month that old car maintenance works out to be.
Hi Joel, always love the content but in particular the cayenne content, mainly because I picked up a 955 V6 at a similar time to you, so it’s been great to follow the journey. Unfortunately my experience has been vastly different to yours. I found the engine to be super reliable, however that couldn’t be said for everything else around it. I had consistent EML’s & PSM alerts, driveshaft knocking as mentioned in the video, coolant leaks, gearbox issues & what ultimately killed the car was a rotten subframe that made it uneconomical to repair. That being said, I do still think they are fantastic and the prices they are currently at makes them a pretty low risk gamble, even if the running costs are quite high! That being said, if another one came up around me and it had been well looked after then I’d happily pay a bit more to get behind the wheel of one again!
I daily drive my 2001 BMW V8 X5. It’s hard to beat an old school V8 in a fully loaded vehicle with all the toys. I’ve had some major works done on it in the last 10 years since I’ve owned it that’s cost a few quid but it still soldiers on. I did have a 955 with the proper engine before the X5 and although it was reliable I always felt it was fragile - especially the interior trim bits. having never personally driven that particular RR, that's what I was wondering. Being it's a unibody construction (unlike the Toyota products you referenced), I was wondering if it drove somewhat similar to the Porsche..? Also, are these RR V8's tight? Or are there body panels flexing and squeaking while driving?
@@itsjoel I think they get under your skin. In my 4 years of ownership it's been good to me, just a starter motor which I fixed myself for free. I've had a couple of cayennes and also a v10 touareg(basically the same car). They have nice quality mostly. Air suspension is a pain sometimes when it starts to act up. Auto valve body can fail, front differential can fail.. interior plastic is not very high quality, V8s can have cylinder scoring and lots lots more that happens with these cars. I think you got a bit lucky with this one. They are great cars when they run :)
I'd keep the Porsche Cayenne. You've just put two grand into it. I've currently got two VW Touareg V10's, and I wouldn't get rid of them at all. One's got a rear diff lock. Thanks for a great video.

Joel, I'd keep the Cayenne. As you say, it has proven to be reliable and not overtly expensive over the last 12,000 miles. I know that it isn't good for your channel views, but you need a car that you can basically rely on 100% - you have it there. Mess about (pardon the pun) with the Maserati or whatever follows that. Good viewing and good for shouting down some of the naysayers.
I have a 2012 cayenne S 4.8, almost 3 years of ownership, about 14k kms, now 103k, issues have been 1. Coolant hoses leaking by being brittle, 2 Abs sensor replaced, and 3. air suspension issues, front struts replaced, pump replaced front suspension arm bushings replaced. It probably needs the rear struts replacing too. What I found is the car needs to be driven pretty regularly, at least 4 times a week. It's been OK but I am not overwhelmed by it, mainly I expect because of the suspension issues. Not sure what to replace it with GLE 350d coupe or Subaru Outback 3.6r (can you get that in the UK).

Please! No RR! I am in LS322 rehab I have seen soooo many You Tube videos on them. Done to death! I’ve never owned a Porsche so I find them very reliable. 😐🤪
Had a 4.4 tdv8......loved it but couldn't justify the running costs in the end...tax/insurance/parts 3x the price of a normal car and the anxiety of what is going wrong next....had it 2 years and 20000 miles. I would enjoy some Range Rover content....but I would stick with the Porsche if you want a good night's sleep 😂
I think alot of people get lured in by a cheap Porsche and that was the case with me, i had a v8 Cayenne for a while and being honest it was a complete money pit although saying that it generally drove well and went like stink for the size and weight of it, by the time i bought it i think it had been neglected by previous owners so i got the shitty expensive end of the stick, from my experience running them on a budget generally isn't really an option so buyers need to prepare for some big bills when buying a bargain basement one, as you say sure the v6 is abit more liveable costwise.
What exhaust do you have on yours Joel? It seems to be slightly louder than stock and the tips look different. I have a 2007 957 3.6 VR6 and don't get that sound stock, I want to get a bit more sound out of mine.
@itsjoel it must be the placebo effect of those optional tailpipes muddling my senses. It does sound really nice though, perhaps I just haven't heard my car from the outside properly as I'm always the one driving it.
this is what I kept wondering, viewing the video. Thanks. I kept thinking, why doesn't my S version have the double tailpipe tips, on each side? And it does indeed sound good, for a V6
@@itsjoel If you need any help fixing up your XC90 let me know, I've fixed mine up quite well, I actually used the same ramp rental place you used in your video. I saw it gave you a hard time before!

Hey, Joel, I hope your next car will be Mercedes w124. Keep it up! 👍👍👍
Thanks for watching!
If Ravenol 0W30 isn’t too expensive there I’d have that instead of the Mobil1, but still rates midpack (decent) as per 540RAT Engineering blog, who torture tests oil to establish their true wear protection limits!! ATF is Mobil1 Synthetic ATF Multi Vehicle (silver bottle/black label). Diff oil Valvoline Synthetic 75W90, GL4 manual trans fluid Redline MT-90
I adore this car, as you know, but as far as video content goes I would love to see a V8 Audi 👀 Perhaps an S4…
or an A5/S5 coupe?
@ Love the S5 V8, however I have only ever been in the Supercharged V6 S5.. always thought they looked fantastic!
@FlynnBellamyCars they really do. From an exterior design stand point, the only modern vehicle which resembles my former 1994 Acura Legend Coupe. And the interior with those brown saddle seats? Orgasm..
@@xman777b Agreed! It is so sad when special cars like these have boring black interiors.
Hey Joel, love the Porsche content.
Have something which may be of interest for you and maybe some content for the channel involving Porsche’s from my owners group.
Hope to hear from you soon 👍🏻
Can’t wait to see the Range V8 TD!
Please! No RR! I am in LS322 rehab I have seen soooo many You Tube videos on them. Done to death! I’ve never owned a Porsche so I find them very reliable. 😐🤪
GET THE L322 4.4 Tdv8, especially the last of the l322s
It’s always crazy to me seeing the roads you drive on that are literally right outside where I live 😂
Salisbury plain!
Keep the Porsche as the daily range rovers are over rated and do no compare to Porsche quality!
It's standard, although the tail pipes were an optional extra when the car was new
@itsjoel it must be the placebo effect of those optional tailpipes muddling my senses.
Great video and go with the Range Rover. 👍👍👍👍
Lucy has an L322 4.4V8 Tdi! How about an X5 M50d ?
Get some Lanoguard underneath 👍
Whats your favourite word of the year ? Joel ( Quattroporte ) 🤣🤣
Have you still got the XC90?
Yes I do actually
@@itsjoel It's time to resurrect the beast for winter
@@itsjoel If you need any help fixing up your XC90 let me know, I've fixed mine up quite well, I actually used the same ramp rental place you used in your video. I saw it gave you a hard time before!
What happened to your Volvo?
I've still got it!
If it was me and you know it’s a good car, I would keep it.
I'd keep the Porshe.
This makes me want a Cayenne 😂
£1.92 for one stainless M8 bolt! Sheesh.
350 pounds for a oil change?
99.7k subs go on mate!
Keep the cayenne, range rovers are awful, one will cost you a fortune and be in the garage permanently!
Next car - Alfa Giulia QV (?)
Buy a Range Rover 😂
Go for a fast estate car Joel, they're like SUV's but not shit! 😁
They look like hearses though.
@JohnBaxendale Only if you've a coffin in the boot. 💀
@@henrym5889 😂
Those are basically a Vw Toureq with a Porsche badge .
Yeah. Don't buy a MASERTTI 😂
Buy a 911!!!!!!
L322+996 = 2 car garage perfection.
Sell it and move on Joel! You got your use out of it! Cheers Kirk
Sadly, another boring SUV. I'd rather spend a little more and drive the Maserati.
If you want a reliable car, buy an old banger 10+ years. All the “Friday afternoon “ cars will have been scrapped already, so you get the good ones.
How do you manage to live with something that ugly though?
You just have to pay, as a result of keeping such an ugly vehicle alive , but yes , a lot of car for the money, I get it
A diesel Range Rover 🤔what a bag of crap👎been running a 3.2 cayenne 955 for 3 years, proper special, every nob wants a rangy👎don’t be a nob
Well said. Your a wise man.
yeah. I don't get how the 2 compare, to be honest. One is quality and handles like a Porsche. While the other...
