  • Go back to 1969 to see the origins of the original Fantasyland ride. A large concept and construction section covers the rides design, layout, construction and operation and includes a look how the infamous dock layout worked with multiple submarines. Then walk the line and board your sub for a full ride of the attraction, featuring a split screen porthole view for both port and starboard views in sync with each other, and a new stereo mix of the soundtrack from Kingdom of Memories, offering a near perfect clean and clear audio track of the full attraction. Finally see the operational issues the ride had, it's closure and what happened to the area afterwards. 32 minutes long. Enjoy!

When I was 19 I got this gig as a summer job; this was, along with Grand Prix Raceway, the premier attraction for guys to work. The sailor's outfits were really cool and, although the subs were on a track, we drove them to the extent that we could manage their speed - you certainly didn't want to ram another sub or snap a pylon rope. We learned to carefully time how to trigger the tape recordings along the way so that they matched the visuals outside. I never expected to relive this experience again in my lfetime; thank you for enabling!

When I was a Castmember in 1994 I never thought that the refurbishment planned was ultimately going to lead to it never reopening. nobody ever thought that. we thought it was going to come back. It's sad that they removed this great attraction.

I was a cast member in Magic Kingdom Entertainment (Zoo Crew) 95 to 97, and remember going into the closed area and walking on the cat walks. this was one of my favorite rides as a kid. We used to watch the fire works when the subs were.. before they took it all out, I also remember seeing a few of them in the covering, and even during on of my walks through the cat walks, even went inside one, obviously other cast members have done the same because the subs were full of trash,, wrappers, even a few pieces of clothing. I have tons of stories about that place from those days.

I had a friend of mine that we told him we would give him $40 bucks to swim in the lagoon (back stage area) one night he sure as hell did it. so we were out of $40 bucks. The water tasted weird too he said,, like metallic or like a penny. I also know before all the cameras were installed a couple of the night time cleaners used to stay inside the closed area where the cat walks were and sleep. I don't know how any one could do that , because there were banana spiders, and roaches in there. I also had one of the maintenance people give a a couple of the fish before they closed it. and I bought a big clam shell from property D (back in the days) for $60.00. Got a ton more stories. wish i had pictures. I might have a few of the subs when we went exploring through the enclosure. fun times, I miss it very much....

Eisner's ambition (and the post-Walt/Roy Disney family) killed this ride. They had to build Disney parks across the globe like they were McDonalds franchises. Except the one in France (opened in 1992) has struggled since it was opened. Because of Eisner's European folly the parks in the USA had to suffer so that the "bottom line" could satisfy the insatiable lust for money that defines the shareholders. Ambition is the father of evil, fear is its mother, and irrational aggression is its profession.

I just wanted to say that this was absolutely fantastic. I’ve lived in Florida all of my life and am old enough to have visited Disney since it’s opening. As a child 20,000 leagues was always one of my absolute favorites. Any time I would visit the park my parents knew that we, at some point, would have to visit 20,000 leagues. When the ride closed I was completely heartbroken. Disney has, honestly, never been the same to me since. I just wanted you to know that this tribute was the best thing that I’ve seen on the ride. I wanted you to know how much I appreciate all of the hard work that you put into it. The nostalgia that this video stirred up was astounding. Keep doing what you’re doing. Hope to see more tributes like this about closed Magic Kingdom rides in the future! Take care.

My first trip to WDW was in January of 1972 (I had just turned 8). I remember the long line that first time, but I absolutely loved the ride! It was just *cool* . I loved how the loading/unloading worked with the "loading bridges" (or whatever they were called) matching up perfectly with the stairs on the sub (it was actually a clever design). I never stopped enjoying the ride and rode this every year I could up to its closing.
I remember getting word of it closing permanently and being told when the last ride would be. I went and there were a bunch of fans of the ride who wanted to ride it one last time. I made sure I was the last guest on and off the last boat. I have no idea if I actually _was_ the last guest as I vaguely remember them going back-and-forth on closing it, but I was for that "ceremony".
I had forgotten that in those early years, water would drip on you from the open hatch as you entered and exited the ride. Thanks to this video, I now know that was due to the waterfalls; though to a young lad, it actually added to the illusion that the sub really dived underwater. I don't believe I really minded it, but I can see a few people being annoyed. Plus, it was cool to see the sub go through the waterfall (they used it as one of the many shots at the opening to "The Wonderful World of Disney" TV show. I don't remember if the waterfall landing on top of the boat made a noise, but I find it hard to believe it didn't.
You can see a small protrusion at the bottom of the "porthole". This was the A/C blowing on the window. I believe this was to prevent it from fogging up as people were (by design) very close to the glass.
Sadly, the inefficiencies of the ride in terms of maintenance, manpower, and riders-per-hour and kind of built into the design. I don't real see a better way of doing it. Oh, sure, they could have enclosed the whole thing as a dark ride and used dry-for-wet on the animatronics, but it would SO not be the same thing. Being in the water was part of the experience.

This is truly a great and definitive document. I know both guests & cast members who hold great love for this attraction.
My favorite memory was a large frog was in the Nautilus with us and the lady next to me _freaked out_, nearly causing all the guests to panic. Ensuing "mass claustrophobia & hydrophobia" aside, & a kid, this made the experience all that more exciting.

On one of our visits to the park this ride was closed for one of the refurbs, as shown later in this video. As we were riding the sky lift overhead we had a great view of the lagoon that had been completely emptied of water. All the prop seaweed and fish and whatnot were just lying on the bottom, and were way more colorful than it looked when underwater. The sense of scale was huge. Even though we didn't get to ride it that day it was cool to see it in that state. Sad it had to go.

Thank you for making and sharing this amazing video! This ride used to be my mother’s childhood dream. Unfortunately, as we are from Brazil, she was only able to visit the park in 1995 as an adult. By this time the ride was already closed.
I grew up listening to her telling me this story, of how she wanted to go on this attraction as a child, but never made it. Today we watched together this video, and she was able to see a little bit of how it used to be.

I look at this and I remember when the admission prices to those theme parks allowed everyone to attend. The $100 ticket prices of today are so exclusionary that I know of families who have never been able to take their children to Disneyland where a family of four would have to fork over $400 plus the cost of parking.

This video tribute was really well done. It was one of my top 3 favorite attractions and this video truly captured it all. I especially like the split screen showing the ride views from both sides of the sub running at the same time. Wish I had the comparison back in the day, then I would have only opted for the Port side (that's the left-side) view. I know they tried to make the ride similar on both sides but there seems to more going on, on the Port-side.

I've loved the film since I was a child, so I think the nostalgia factor of stepping into the Nautilus would have made it worthwhile. As for the ride, yeah, I know it's no rollercoaster, but I admire the engineering and craftsmanship required to create a realistic lagoon and coral reef.

Great vid MartinsVidsDotNet! You made a typo in the end. It's "Ariel's" Grotto, not "Aerials" Grotto! lol! But regardless of the error, great video!

It's a shame the Nemo Subs could not have been re-engineered to have water tight hatches. The "falls" at Nemo always looked anemic next to the Disneyland Sub falls.

If you're talking about the music on-ride, it was available on the WDW Forever discs sold at the park during the 90's

one of the best rides ever nemo version just sucked compared to the origina
forgot this was wdw, went last in 1993 went multiple times when i went there. it was as good at the haunted mansion or pirates ( the original). nemo took over in cali in the early 2000s, still was a happy to get on the sub to relive the kid memories, but just NAW. good but not great. still better then gone for ever i guess

Question: I remember hearing (from ride operators I think) that toward the end they were having problems with a boat somehow sliding off a track or somehow becoming stuck in the lagoon. When this happened, the only solution was to get everybody off (four at a time on a raft of a boat) so the boat would become buoyant enough to get it unstuck. Is there any truth to this and, if there is, are there any pictures of it?

This is a wonderful attraction. Curiosity has come to mind. I want to translate their words into Japanese, But I can't hear their words well. Can someone write out their words?

I heard that to prevent claustrophobia there were air vents in the portholes that directed moving air to your face. Can anyone confirm this was true?

+Sam Paul Beneath the port hole was a vent that blew upwards. Not sure about the reason it was placed there.

+Sam Paul Yes, but it was just there as air conditioning. The idea that it was there to prevent claustrophobia is just one of the many myths that have sprung up about this great ride: most of them spread by people who weren't even born at the time!
