Dreamflight represented what I miss most about old Disney, the occasional weird attraction you stumble across that somehow becomes one of your favorites. It’s missing those non disneyfied attractions that are so much more unique than the character driven stuff we already know
This is the perfect summation of what I miss about old Disney. Some of those old attractions were so quirky and corny but in a charming way. I particularly liked Dreamflight’s theme song. I hope at least some classic WDW stays around for a long time.
I miss old Disney and I don't know that we are ever going to get it back. I loved the mix of NON Disney stuff and "If you had Wings" is one of my most nostalgic and favorite rides. I don't particularly like the new rides they've come out with.
@@pilotbeckett nah it can never come back. unfortunately they don’t do anything that they don’t think will bring back a maximum return. it’s just cold hard business. The fun naivety of weird old rides where they were just trying things out to see if they would work is gone
If You Had Wings was the BEST!!! Back then, it was a major BIG deal for regular folks and families to get on a jet airplane! and to go on this ride was a real treat by all. Jet travel was a very special deal and folks dressed up a bit more and acted respectful and with class!!!!!!!
YES. I always say I was born at the wrong time. I wish I could have been alive during this! I like flying and I think planes and the fact that we can do that is amazing! I wish I could enjoy it more. It's harder to enjoy it now. ☹️
I met an older woman at a weekend class about a year ago that used to be a flight attendant for Pan Am. She said it was back in the day when people dressed up when they traveled.
By far the most important part of this ride is that IT WAS FREE and COLD! You didn't even have to use an "A" ticket. This ride had THE BEST air conditioning. That's critically important as you'd know if you've spent a summer outside in Florida. I loved the ride too. The speed run part was awesome!
Yes! I remember this ride always had people on it continuously. However, because of the way it was designed, it moved along without the need for start/stop boarding. It was always a sure bet you could take a break from the brutal heat and not wait more than 10 minutes to sit down, relax and cool off. Later when they opened Epcot, Disney must’ve taken note since they developed even more rides matching this format.
Wish I could, but they would have to make it all woke crap/sh$$$! We will never get the beauty of our country and our society back ever again. It is contamimated beyond help.
Amazing to compare the same spaces through different iterations. For years we would spontaneously burst out with "If you had wings, had wings, ........".
I went in 1974 and i always remembered the name of the ride...when i heard that song it all came flooding back. My friend also went in 70s...so now its stuck in our heads. We too will randomly start saying it to...its a bit obsessively stuck in thete! Ahhh 70s.
Dreamflight was one of the things that really inspired my interest in aviation history as a kid. It might not have been a thrilling ride, but the music and style of it will always hold a special place in my heart.
I remember my good friend, Imagineer Tom Scherman telling me (1990) that he worked on some of the models for Dreamflight. Tom also worked on the 20K Nautilus walkthrough for France. He passed away many years ago, but was a 20K expert, and knew Harper Goff very well. Tom's dream was to see (in part, his) "Discovery Bay" realized at Disneyland.
I see that one of the original Imagineers Chimed in below, I gave him a Thumbs Up....BUT......if you look at SOARIN....LOL.....you KNOW that the Scenes and Idea of it was TAKEN from the TUNNEL of this ride. So, THANK YOU "Eastern Airlines" for sponsoring this ride at it's beginnings. I've been going to WDW since 1972 and have been living here in Florida since 1973..... :~) P.S. As others have said, back when you had Ticket Books at Walt Disney World...this ride was a LIFE SAVER from June to August here in Florida since it was FREE and did have ICE COLD A/C.
It still shows that the ride still had impact with the park in orlando more as now on the spiel of the Tomorrowland music, you can hear If You Had Wings.
I was not sure when it opened but based on what I have learned here the ride was relatively "Brand New' when we got there in July of 1972. It was a cute little ride and rarely had a line and the best part was, it was FREE
Anya Bilgutay This was always mine and my family’s favorite ride at Disney....I visited the Magic Kingdom yesterday after not having been there for 30+ years and missed this ride...got to thinking about it which led me to this video...thanks so much for the tribute and trip down memory lane

I loved Both of these from the various times I went on them between 1978-1995...simple rides, yes, but they were charming...also, I believe back when they still had the ticket books, this was either free or at most an A or B ticket...it’s amazing how effective the simple Omni-mover/speedroom combination was for simple rides like this!
Awesome job Martin, many thanks for bringing back memories of this attraction. I knew it as Dreamflight when I visited 1990. It was always a walk on . Ideal for chilling out for ten minutes. 👍
I never noticed that detail about the Dreamflight sets getting more advanced as the ride progressed. I always felt the ride had a disjointed art direction. Now it all makes sense!
interesting tidbit about the vocals: The theme song was recorded by Gloria Kaye (occasionally credited mistakenly as Gloria Bellis (her husband’s last name)), who did “New Hroizons” for Horizons, “we’ve come so far” for Space mountain, and the 1993 unload version of “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” for Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress. For some reason though, when delta dropped sponsorship, they had somebody record new vocals for the attraction. Why I’m not sure. Contract? Availability conflict? Offer declined? Cost? Who knows.
I used to love Dreamflight so much when I was a kid! I loved all the music. My favorite part was the supersonic takeoff/future scene, with the whirring jet engine and the classic fog-machine smell. Mom always loved the Paris scene. Thanks for the great trip down nostalgia lane!

One of my best memories of Disney World...the ride had ac and little oversight of food and beverage. This was our go to for chip whiches and drinks plus it was awesome at the time.... who didn’t love the end..
My first plane ride with my family was in 1978 on Eastern Airlines to Walt Disneyworld in Orlando Florida. I will never forget it and these rides. I remember all week on vacation my family and I would sing this song, as we went on it several times and over the years whenever when we went back to Disneyworld. Great family memories! ❤
I was nine years old when the Magic Kingdom opened and went many times in the early years. This attraction was one of my favorite ones just to cool off in the air conditioning. As someone who always dreamed of traveling it was very inspiring in that regard too.
And they are currently re routing the que yet again. I may be slightly biased having only experiencing Take Flight and Space Ranger Spin, but I think either Dreamflight or Take Flight may be the best iterations of this attraction.

I got to go on Space Ranger Spin twice, a couple of weeks ago (I finally got Galactic Hero!), and some of the theming seems like it's in dire need of an update. The Viewmaster in the queue in particular is still using worn-out 1998 CRT screens and is looking like the video on them is running from an old VHS, scanlines and sync issues and all.

We visited in '86 then again in '90, so we entirely missed "if you could fly" and...I'm kinda glad. It sounds like an incoherent jumble, and would've ruined my happy memories of so many joyful & relaxing trips through "if you had wings".
Hi Martin, this is a really good compilation of the history of this ride. Although the Space Ranger Spin is great for today's modern era, the Dreamflight still holds near and dear to my heart. I did see that you used my upload as part of this compilation, which I do appreciate since my grandfather (who was the one who recorded at that time) did occasionally stop the recording. I don't know if it was the camcorder back in the day or what since it was 1991, but the recording is as you had seen it. I do appreciate the credit, but just to clarify my username in case anyone has tried to look up my Dreamflight video, there is a 2006 at the end of my username handle. But regardless, great video and great compilation of a very good ride at Disney World. Thanks again!
The mural of the old airport as you get on Dreamflight looks a lot like the old Glendale Airport, which coincidentally is a couple of blocks away from Walt Disney Imagineering in Glendale CA.
Dreamflight was definitely the best incarnation by far, although I think If You Had Wings had the most iconic soundtrack out of them all. Buzz Lightyear just feels like a cheap haunted house from an old amusement park with all the cheap blacklight sets. Buzz is definitely the worst version of this ride.
Okay, now I'm just curious how you got High Quality tracks of Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin. They just sound so clear as compared to else on RUclips!
You know, while I generally disliked it when they did a major revamp of an older ride to paste on a movie tie-in... the Buzz Lightyear ride was way better than anything that came before. (Although Dreamflight had a better theme song. ;->)
Buzz Lightyear's sets look cheap and shoddy compared to Dreamflight. It was definitely a step backwards -- and Men In Black is vastly superior to Buzz it in everyway.
I'm curious as to how they changed the lyrics to Dreamflight when they renamed it to Take Flight (I could barely hear the new theme song in the video). Could you please post the lyrics to Take Flight, or better yet, link to the song itself? Thanks so much, and thanks for your awesome, detailed videos: I always look forward to the next one! 😃
Its a whole different world when you take flight going free as a bird in the sky. Lift off your dreams to a new height you can go anywhere when you fly. Theres a gateway to adventure, in the endless sky so blue!
Once the video transitions to discussing Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin, you use music from the ride in the video. Could you tell me where you found this music? As far as I know, you're the only person online who has posted those songs online or at least in such high quality. I would love to have access to those rips of the songs as well.

Don’t forget Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin later in the video!
loved that ride
kind of the predecessor of soarin and spaceship earth ,
memories
Sigh want to go back in time🤗
I'm curious as to how they changed the lyrics to Dreamflight when they renamed it to Take Flight (I could barely hear the new theme song in the video).

1973 was 'my year'
Thanks for preserving the history of this ride(s)... very fun to see.
If you had money, had money, had money
Calling Buzz Lightyear! Come in, Buzz Lightyear! This is Star Command! Buzz Lightyear, do you read me?
