WEDWay to Peoplemover Martins Ultimate Tribute

  • Another huge project.... full of WEDway!
Beginning with the origins of the ride, look at how Tomorrowland developed and how the WEDway route was refined. See the development of the ride system progressed, how it fits into Tomorrowland and how it actually works. Next is a full concept and construction section, followed by a recreation of the original 1975-1985 era ride. Using vintage footage take a multi angle trip around and through the whole ride including Mission to Mars, RCA Space Mountain with Home of Future Living and If You Have Wings, set to the original Jack Wagner spiel. I'm hoping this audio track, whilst certainly not perfect, is one of the clearest and most complete mixes available.
This is followed by a spin on the original Star Jets.
Next up is a full multi angle night ride on the 1985-1994 ORAC-1 WEDway. This includes RCAs RYCA-1 and Delta Dreamflight. Audio again is I hope one of the clearest and most complete version of this spiel, mixed from front and rear car recordings so nothing was missed.
See the changes made in 1994, then take a full daytime multi angle ride on the Tomorrowland Transit Authority TTA Blueline. Again, audio was specifically recorded with a directional microphone from both the front and back cars, and again I hope this is one of the best and most complete recordings.
Following this is a full multi camera, HD spin on the Astro Orbiter.
This is followed by yet more - a HD, multi angle daytime ride of the 2009 Peoplemover with audio again mixed from front and rear cars. I also with this edit attempted to use more unusual camera angles to differ from the many ride throughs already available.
And still there's more! A daytime off ride look at the Peoplemover as it travels around the various parts of Tomorrowland.
For anyone still watching, next up is an in depth look at the WEDway proposed for Lake Buena Vista, E.P.C.O.T. and Communicore. Then look at and ride the WEDway at Houston Airport and the WEDway derived line in Washington DC.
And finally..... a night time HD multi angle ride around Tomorrowland of today.
Each section is set to contemporary Tomorrowland music of the time. 87 minutes long.

Here's the ingeniousness of this ride. At 1:08:26 there appears to be two buttons on the control panel - one to start up and an e-stop. The simplicity of this ride is also it's greatest strength. The ride almost never breaks down and is still one of the most cherished rides still at WDW.

I didn't go on WEDway until I was an adult (because it didn't "do" anything). Later it was the very first ride I took my daughter on just before her 1st birthday. It's a really neat view of Tomorrow Land, especially at sunset, but fun any time. Like others, I miss the old TTA audio loop--- really funny. Love the Mover

I did not know the "division" was sold to Bombardier. It explains why we haven't seen any more peoplemovers come about. Sadly, because there are so many places on the Walt Disney World property where they could do what Walt intended them to do, and not just be a novelty attraction.

I love this. PeopleMover was the first attraction I ever rode at WDW (my 1st visit was in 1978 as a toddler) and to this day it's still my favorite and what I always ride first when visiting the Magic Kingdom. I remember back in the day though, my mom & I misread the sign and called it the WE-DAY PeopleMover instead of WEDWAY. I still like calling it the WE-DAY PeopleMover though.

I love me some retro though -- I'd seen tons of videos on the Disneyland PeopleMover and fell in love with the ride that way. Orlando International Airport does NOT have a WEDway PeopleMover system. Theirs is a Automated Guideway System. The key difference is the WEDway system cars are totally unpowered (no drive motor, no A/C, no speaker for the spiel) eliminating the need for a power transfer system to the cars.

This part gave me such a flashback... " "Hi there Tomorrowland passengers, this is Mr. Johnson in Sky View Hovercraft , bringing you the latest Tomorrowland traffic report. As usual, everything is perfect on Tommorowland's super-highways. back to you at TTA central."
Way back, I was a CM in Fantasyland. I don't know if anyone remembers E-ride Nights, but that was where a limited amount of resort guests could buy a ticket to stay in the park an extra 3 hours on certain designated nights. This was before extra magic hours. And only certain attractions where open, and all of Fantasyland was closed. A handful of us Fantasyland CM's would have to stay, though to "guard" all the entrances to FL, because no one could even walk through. So we'd direct the guests otherwise. One of these spots we were stationed was pretty much right under the TTA track by Mickey's Star Traders. Yes, technically we were in Tomorrowland in FL costumes, but we were told it was ok, as we didn't want guests to get all the way to the teacups only to have to turn around.
Anyway, it was a pretty lonely, boring job, and hearing that narration every few sections, well, I got to the point I could recite it word for word, exact inflection and everything. It was years ago, but it's still engraved in my brain.

This is very comprehensive and nostalgic. I particularly love the discussion of proposed uses of the Wedway elsewhere in the resort, including the proposal for the Walt Disney World Village. I also learned more about the history like the original plan for PeopleMover load/unload to be inside Space Mountain! The only thing I would've liked to see was mention of the Wedway routes just outside the Magic Kingdom, visible on a map Walt Disney refers to in his EPCOT presentation. However, it's not a huge omission, IMO.

Thank you very much for this. I've always loved the WEDway PeopleMover. As a kid, I thought it would be cool if they had a similar system going throughout Magic Kingdom (of course, I also thought a monorail system going through my neighborhood and stopping at each house would be cool so I didn't have to walk too far to the bus stop; eh, I was a kid :-) ).
Partially because of this, I'm REALLY sad the system wasn't implemented in either E.P.C.O.T. or Walt Disney World Village. Not only would it have been cool, but a really good use of the tech, IMHO. I wonder if you could have changed your mind on your destination half-way through the trip (assuming you hadn't passed the stop already). How about multiple stops (some family members going one place while others go to other places). I'm really interested to know how that would have worked.
I really like the description of how the system works. I noticed a couple of missing details, however. First, there's no mention of how the multiple speaker system works to deliver the ride's spiel. I'm guessing the same sensor used to detect the presence of the car also tells the spiel system to send the recording to these speakers. I'm really curious how that all works.
Second, while it is implied, it's never directly mentioned that the cars are unpowered. I consider this important since that's actually a selling point of the tech: the cars weigh less, have few moving parts, NO electronic parts, and don't require any complicated and possibly dangerous power transfer system (e.g. a third rail). All of which makes maintenance of the cars easy and inexpensive.
It's partially because of this second point that I wonder how the LBV system was supposed to work. It looked like the cars were going to be powered which would eliminate some of the tech's "advantages".

It sounds like there may have been other dioramas considered for the PeopleMover route before Progress City was (partially) moved from Disneyland. That's what I gather based on the statement here. Plus, my memory is Progress City stayed at Disneyland a few years after Carousel of Progress left and America Sings moved in. Did the Florida PeopleMover operate for a time without the Progress City model? And if other dioramas were indeed considered, is it known what they would've been?

Something that has been bugging me for a few years now, is that I can’t seem to find out who was the voice actor for Orac-1?

I've been asking that question for 20+ years.
I've even seen a letter from Dave Smith at Walt Disney Archives responding to this question.
We wasn't even able to get the answer from Imagineering.

I read that Ronnie Schell did the voice for ORAC-1, but I'm not completely sure on this.

@@kuluke2002 Oh my gosh, thank you for the lead! If it was Schell it would make sense; he did a lot of work with/for the Disney company.

I really miss the old TTA narration. The current one is just junk.

The old one had tons of theming and tone, and the new one really doesn't.
