- It's Summer 1994 and the rumor is that 20K will close for good in September. I had already shot a lot of 20K video, but my Dad had just bought this "Hi-8 wonder camcorder" thing and my brother Brian talked him into letting us borrow it for a day. We did the best we could and this is part of what Brian shot (he knew how to use it), with the two of us discussing focus and other stuff as Nemo takes a moment to appreciate the Aurora Borealis.
This ride terrified me as a kid. One of my earliest memories is standing near the lagoon after they shut it down, but when the lagoon was just sort of this dead space with the tracks visible in the still water below. Sort of like a waiting area, I think; not sure what the area overlooking the lagoon was functioning as during that time. But horrifying. will never forget the eeriness of the still, quiet lagoon with those old tracks visible in the water down below. Ugh. Gives me the creeps.
defy grav I remember that too! So eerie!
you may have submechaniphobia
Oh man, have you seen the pictures of it they have on Google? Straight up nightmare fuel with that green water and animatronic serpent thing.
I'll never forget how sad I was when I found out this ride was gone. I still remember the air conditioning vents above every porthole, and the excitement of being inside the Nautilus, my childhood fantasy come true. It's such a forlorn feeling watching this. feels like I'm a kid all over again.
dUsTjUnKy2000 Disney Sea in Tokyo has it!
Me too. The new Nemo ride sux
racer64 yes it does!!!!!!
Wow, so that's why this ride is sorely missed. It seemed like such a great ride.
KatieElfman it was amazing
I still remember this ride, like was yesterday...i loved it so much and miss it a ton!
Nope, that was the Submarine Voyage in Disneyland. 20k Leagues sat abandoned in the Magic Kingdom until 2004, when they completely demolished the attraction to make way for Pooh's Playful Spot.
I loves this ride every time i was at Disneyland as a kid
I went on this ride in 1986 when I was 8. I was terrified! When I went back in 1996 I was ready at 18 to face my fear, and to my disappointment the ride was closed and a king posiden (?) A.k.a ariel's dad statue was there instead.
Actually Ariels dad is king Triton Poseidons son in the greek myths
I know I was so sad!
The music makes it sound like a Count Dracula ride.
The movie had the same soundtrack
I worked 20 000 leagues under the sea in '92
Cool! Was it fun?
Cool did you get close to the sea serpent?
Is it true CM's would hang things from the rafters in the show building to make the driver laugh?
Considering I was born in 1999 and live in California I've never witnessed this ride nor did I even know it existed until being on tumblr and seeing a post in memorial of it. Looks like a great ride. I have passes to disney California and let me tell you this ride looks better than the finding memo adaptation. Rip 20k leagues under the sea.
Lauryn Carey I rode it as a kid. it was amazing. i heard thet redid it in Tokyo.
Defunctland made a full VR version of the ride for those of you wanting the ride experience
That's not the channels name

You are by far one of the best in preserving Disney World's past
Dragonrider1227 *Disneyland
@@paolachavez499 No this is DisneyWorld, there is one in Disneyland and DisneyWorld. This one is the one at DisneyWorld.
Why do all the best rides have to go? :(
I absolutely adore the fitting reference to Tony Baxter. If you listen to the on-ride audio around the 7:14 time point, you will hear a reference to 'Mr. Baxter'.
As a huge 'Nautilus' fan, and one of the Imagineers who worked on the installation of this Attraction at Walt Disney World, it is a fitting nod.
He must have been thrilled!
I'd hate to tell you but this ride opened well before Tony went in WDI
+Justin R Nope. Baxter worked on the initial installation in 1971 under Claude Coats, and subsequently returned to manage the first dry refurb.
One of my original four favorite rides (along with Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Mr Toad's Wild Ride).
Looks like half the animatronics aren’t working (clams, eels) emphasizing the fact that fixing them wasn’t high priority at this point.
they are auctioning off the sea serpent and one of the mermaids at the "That's from Disneyland Pop-up Action" this month
It can't be from this version of the ride. photographic evidence exists that show the serpents from both sides of the track having been destroyed. It would have to be from the Submarine Voyage at Disneyland.
@@PiperSparkles the sea serpent from submarine Voyage was sold to a private collector who keeps it next to his pool, he's in good hands
@@N800-q1b I know, what I'm saying is the sea serpents from this version of the ride (20,000 Leagues under the Sea at Walt Disney World) were destroyed, so the auction the OP was referring to cannot be for the ones from this ride, it would have to be from California.
@@PiperSparkles Apparently one of the heads of the sea serpents from this ride got sold
@@N800-q1b Ooh! It would be interesting to see current photos of that.
20, 000 leagues under the sea was my favorite live action Disney movie as a kid
Really cool video.
Sadly, what now stands in place of 20,000 leagues is Pooh Corner.
They covered the whole ride in dirt. Kinda like a grave.
and now its replaced with The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure, which is very fitting considering they are both aquatic themed.
This ride is one of my first early memories. Ever. Rode it when I was 3 or 4 (1984 or 85, maybe 86) It imprinted on me, I guess. I was mesmerized.
May I use this footage in a video I'm making about underwater animatronics? I will give your channel full credit.
Hey Theme Park Crazy, how's the coaster life going?
It's so sad most of these subs were buried in a landfill. R.I.P. :(
I honestly was heartbroken when I went to Disney in 2013 to see the ride completely gone. I hadn't been since I was 11, in 1989, and had no idea the ride had been closed. Thank you for this video! The ride was as great as I had remembered.
Got to ride this one last time in 1989 and it was one of my favorites. A truly immersive experience that no screen-based ride could ever duplicate.
Damn I wish I could have gone on this ride while it was active... I fucking love Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Their Design of the Nautilus is hands down the coolest looking out of all the many incarnations. With the one from League of Extraordinary Gentleman's being a close second.
Man they need to do a new ride. Can only imagine with the technology today to make a kick ass ride.
There's one in Japan that is cheesy and not really under water
I loved this ride. Always wanted my own sub after riding on this one.
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was one of my favorite movies as a kid, so I loved being able to ride the Nautilus and share in the adventures. Got to ride it one last time before it was closed down for good, and it'll always be among my favorite Magic Kingdom rides.
That was fun! Do you want to head over to Carousel of Progress or get Dole Whip?
Seriously, I'm so glad you recorded this. Wish I could have seen it in person.
I remember this ride from when I was really little.. I remember going back to Disney world in hs and they said it had been shut down. I was super sad.. But I saw pictures of the subs when I google searched Tokyo Disney sea.. Not sure if they reopened the ride there but if I were able to go on this ride again I think it would blow my mind
I liked how Captain Nemo said Welcome aboard the Nautilus! It sounds so similar to Devon saying Welcome aboard the Knight 2000 to Michael Knight. :-) Yes, 20K Leagues & a Knight Rider fan here. (: Great video! Wished I could had ridden it. Maybe Disney will bring it back one day? Who knows?!
I remember hearing of this ride from many of my family members who did get to experience that and as someone who was a FANATIC of the book, I always wished to go there. To my dismay, when we finally got to go there, there was a little mermaid ride in its place.
@6:11 Aurora Borealis, at this time of year at this time of day in this part of the country localized entirely within this Disney Ride?
Crazed Link y e s
Can i see it?
@@AlanNguyen12398fghj Ummm...no.
Thank you for posting this treasure! I wish they would bring it back. We don’t need televised rides at the park. Universal did that to their rides and I wished I had just stayed home to watch tv instead.
I wanted to ride this so bad as a kid and it was down for maintenance the first time I went. I was excited to try again a few years later, but I was too late. I'm grateful for the opportunity to see what 5 year old me missed out on. Thanks!
This was my favorite ride as a kid :(
Yallzes done been lucky to ride this ride. I cannot express how much i love this ride and the history and mystery (for me) I was not born yet when any of these rides were open but i am making it my mission to learn as much about it. I swear in some past life I was an engineer or something on this ride
Kerberos Cosplay dude that's so awesome!!
I filmed this exact video, just with a few quick glances inside the submarine as well so you can get context of what is around you as you see this. Good times.
Loved that ride, so sad when they got rid of it. Loved how they made you feel like the sub was diving down deep but never moves downward at all.
This ride had people dressed as mermaids that would swim around and stuff for a while.
+Agnes Fox Not quite. That was at Disneyland BUT if you go to the 20,000 Leagues page on Widen Your World, you can read a pretty convincing argument that WDW had originally planned for mermaids as well.
I don't remember that
Great upload and thanks so much for going and filming it just before it went! It's funny that at around 11:07 the guy says 'you need to get it from the other side' - I think the ride experience was designed so guests on both sides saw the same stuff, right?
+peanutismint Near-identical sets on both sides
Thank you so much. I grew up dreaming of riding 20,000 Leagues. I was heart broken as I aged and found out that it had long been gone by the time I was even old enough to know of it. Thank you for sharing this and letting me experience it at least somewhat. I was awestruck even watching this!
Great ride. Saw it as a kid. Went back to take my own kid on it and it was shut down. The movie was before my time (1954) but the ride made me see the movie... and the movie is just like the ride. Same sound track, voices, etc. Well done.
Wow, never realized how shallow the tank this ride was set in is. Kinda ruins the illusion when you can see the surface of the water is only a few inches above the animatronics at all times.
It's a shame that this ride was demolished. Apparently it was too difficult and expensive to maintain as whenever anything needed to get done (like an animatronic needing cleaning or repairs) the technician had to scuba dive. Interesting fact, much like the circling sharks in the Graveyard of Lost Ships scene, it was originally planned for there to be circling dolphins somewhere on the ride.
they got rid of it because of cost?
That and the then CEO of Disney (Eisner I think) mandating some severe penny pinching.
and they replaced with crap, at least get a decent ride if they going to replace it
eisner, damn billionaire penny pinching, lol
Don't get me wrong, I like Winnie the Pooh. But the thinking at the time was, "Hey! Winnie the Pooh is a popular, successful franchise of ours. But we don't have a place to sell the merchandise inside the parks, what do we do? We'll demolish that old submarine ride that requires a lot of finicky maintenance and make a little Winnie the Pooh land. Yeah, and we'll get rid of that Toad ride (does anyone even remember that movie? Ha ha) Just remember it has to all dump out into the Winnie the Pooh gift shop!" Above all Disney is a corporation, if it doesn't make money or promotes something so IT can make money, they are not actually obligated to keep it, no matter how popular or well loved it is.
Well, at least we still have the only one left at Tokyo DisneySea
you gonna go there someday
adder birdo maybe
Thanks for posting. My dad talked about this ride all the time, but by the time I got to go to Disney World, they had closed the ride. Nice to see what all he was talking about.
Thanks for sharing this. I went on this ride as a really little kid. I remember just parts of it and was amazed! I really wish they didn't have to shut it down. To have to scuba dive to fix and maintain this ride was probably extremely difficult, along with unpredictable weather and the sun going down the darkness would keep you from seeing certain part's of the ride not in those tunnels. Not to mention how difficult it was to get in and out of the ride so those with disabilities could not ride it. I am glad I got to experience it.
Tokyo still has a version of this ride that looks like it's under water and is just water and bubbles between two sheets of glass.
I remember going on this as a kid with my dad once. It was fun because my dad liked the movie. I was sad when they closed the ride down for good. Those were good times.
I'm so blessed to be on this ride...... When I was little of course.
The finding memo ride is so boring, I was never born when they had this ride :'(
GoldenMangoLPS this ride was amazing. i rode it as a kid.
Oh man that sux. It was the best and my fav. Was disappointed with nemo
I would rather see a volcano, Atlantis, sea serpents, mermaids, etc than cartoon talking fish. BUT at least Nemo was a great excuse to open Submarine Voyage again. The ride lives on in a way because of it.
Finding Nemo
@@diegofavaratozfilms962 it probably was auto correct
The best of Disney World
I heard rumors that sometimes they had problems like the giant squid would not work properly. That happened with the jaws ride the original version of the ride were the shark was blown up and not electrocuted. Malfunctioned so badly so often universal sued the people that designed it and rebuilt it.
I needed that today, great memories. Thank you for posting
It's crazy to think that for so much of the lifetime of Magic Kingdom, this ride was there, where New Fantastyland stands now, and so many people never knew it existed. I was never able to witness it myself, as I have been a huge Disney fan for my whole life, but was born in 2002, after this ride was demolished, but it looks like it was fantastic.
Thank you so much for the upload!
This really popped up after I watched the Defunctland VR version of this
i feel like this is the type of ride i would have gotten a panic attack on as a child lol
Wait,if there are animatronic fish and stuff in that water, how do they not get wet and short-circuit? Or is what you see just like some movie thing???
They were actuated by compressed air. But that said, it's pretty straight-forward to put electrically-controlled equipment underwater if you know what you're doing.
Yeah, they use compressed air, which is what they also use for the jungle cruise ride!!! Because animatronics are in the water as well on that ride!:)
well, this is interesting, a recommended video from over 8 years ago that is yet to go over 100k views, lets see how long until that happens.
For those wondering where in the park this was located, (since this was the Florida Location) it's located at the Little Mermaid Attraction. While it's not the same as the original, there is a little Easter Egg in the waiting queue in Memorial to 20k Leagues Under The Sea. Just before you enter the building queue (the long way around), there are a few ponds you'll pass by. And it's engraved onto the rocks, and hidden on the rocks on our blind side (we don't have visuals until you get around and into the shaded area that leads into the ride). And the last pond you'll pass, you'll be facing the north side(?) of the pond, and there, you'll find a small engraving of the Nautilus there (which will be on your left). and to your right, there is a small island where there are abandoned piece of look-out windows that I believe could have been apart of the nautilus (I do not know if this fact is true, but it's my own head canon and would be excellent in theory, if they were to salvage any parts from the ships and place them as props). Keep an eye out whenever you next go to Disney World and you're waiting on the Ariel Attraction.
The lagoon location would have been where the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is located today.
the one in Tokyo that doesn't actually have to deal with water is pretty cool, but I notice that the ride time has been cut to less than half of this 10 minute ride.
Why can't they do something with this ride already
Seems like a cool ride
Sorry it shut down
But I do find that pipe organ music in the background menacing
I thought that the giant octopus thing was suppose to attack you 😕
Squid*
A pretty insane ride if you think about it
I remember being on this ride briefly. I remember mermaids and some ducks above us and a shark??
Not sure what year it was, I had to be only 3-4??
Anyone know what rendition of this ride that was? Maybe the yellow subs?
That was the disneyland one, and if I'm correct, the submarines were grey (support our *fucking* troops) and it was (if I'm correct) some time in the 60's
My dad went on this ride as a kid
That monster scared me as a kid and then it was replace by Nemo...nice going Disney.
That was the Disneyland version you’re talking about. This version closed the year this was filmed and was torn out completely in 2004.
I want this ride and Mr Toad to return to Disney World. But put 20,000 Leagues at Animal Kingdom and kinda make it like the Tokyo Disneyland version to not be expensive to maintain and put Mr Toad at the uk pavilion at Epcot!
loved that ride!! as a kid so sad its gone...
The sea serpent is cute but that giant squid is so goddamn creepy.
My dad went on this before!
Lol the whole video was just darkness
I am so sad that they closed this ride. I am even more sad that it was replaced by some kind of Winnie the Poh ride. All told, I am one sad dude right now.
It was Mr. Toad's Wild Ride that was replaced by the Winnie the Pooh Ride. When this ride closed, Ariel's Grotto was put in in it's place and the entrance was turned into a character greeting area (I remember seeing chip and dale, Cinderella's mice, Hercules, and several villains there) when Ariel's Grotto closed to make room for the Fantasyland expansion, the Seven Dwarfs' Mine Train was put there :)
I did not think I could get any sadder...
I never got a chance to ride it only saw it closed
I never did either, but my mom did and she said it was boring,I know a lot of people loved it but oh well we're all different
they replaced it with where characters gather with little mermaid, yeah ariels grotto from above.
Everyone I talk to who went to Disney when this was open talks about how cheesy it was and that I wasn't missing anything...
High resolution. Puts up 1994 handycam 8mm video. Thanks for posting. But yeah.
bring this back disney, nobody understands japanese.
@widenyourworld: Do you still have the original not edited recording? Could you maybe upload it to a site like Google Drive or Mega?
I LOVED that ride..and the Film
THEY ONLY HAVE THAT RIDE IN TOKYO!
Totally different type of ride.
captain nemo was voiced by peter renaday
Bruh what's a "surface storm"?
Most of it was too dark to see.
Only if the camera was down more!! Auhhhggg
the ride and narration was hokie but it has its charm. i still can remember it. at least, the ride provided a place out of the heat and a chance to cool down.
I aways sat at the port side of the boat when I rode this ride so this was confusing for me.
@applejaxs88 It's King Triton, you goon!
Did anyone else come here because of TPM vids or is it just me?
Is this James Mason's voice ?
I thought the exact same thing, but its another actor named Peter Reneday who did an impression of James Mason. pretty convincing though!
Peter Reneday is also famous as the voice of Master Splinter in the 1980's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as well as Henry in The Country Bear Jamboree and a few other attractions in Disney. :)
I would be so fucking paranoid on this ride. I don’t like the ocean at all.
This is dumb but can someone explain to me how this works? Like what are you sitting in is an aquarium just around u I’m so confused
Devin Devin your in a submarine underwater with animatronic fishes and stuff
R Mog EWWWWWW that is actually nightmare fuel
Devin Devin yea
Thanks, I hate it
Why
I have wondered what the ride was like since several of my friends speak highly of it. I must say I am not impressed. It looks boring to me :/
It actually was very interesting!
@@mocha_. Ya know what? Read your comment and decided to watch the video again. Must say I am a little more impressed this time around. I actually believe I'd like the ride. Too bad they removed it. What was the reason, do you know?
As boring as I remember it. This ride was meh meh meh.
Nope, in my opinion I think it was really good!
