You made my grandmother cry. I showed her the video because she often talks about the one time in her life when she was still young and spent a ton of money to fly to the usa in order to visit Disneyland. She said that it looks just like the one from her memory and made her feel the same like back then. She was so happy and asked me to write you that she is very grateful for the opportunity to experience it again and that she wishes you all the best and that you and your team continue your wonderful work. Thank you so much.
How do you run this in VR? I downloaded the installer from the link in the RUclips description and ran it, but the experience never loads in my VR headset, and on my monitor I just see part of some blue splash screen I can't interact with..
@@parishna4882 for those having this problem, you need to hit “alt enter” on that blue screen to get it to size correctly so you can select an option to start. Man that was such a nostalgia trip, and so much better than just watching a flat 360 video in RUclips. Thank you! Also starting the ride is confusing; when you get to the sign above the ride, it says something like “Embark Now”-you want to point your controller at that and you’ll see a little dot, sort of like a gaze-based selection indicator appear. Wow, that was actually quite emotional for me. When I first visited WDW with my parents in 1974-75, this ride was one of the main ones I wanted to ride, yet it was broken, or undergoing refurbishment, or something. We went back in the 80's a couple times, and, it was broken or closed for whatever reason on BOTH occasions...point is, for one reason or another, I never got to ride that thing, so this is something special to me. Thank you all.
Same here. I went over from Scotland for the holiday of a lifetime in 80/81 and as a 9yr old who loved the film it was the one ride I really wanted to go on. The pool was drained and I saw the Nautilus just sitting on its rail. I've never forgotten that so to stumble across this was simply amazing. The Haunted Mansion made up for the disappointment though. Even at 50 I can still remember that ride like it was yesterday.
@@ImperialTrooperUK lol, we had nearly the same experience, except, it was Space Mountain that made up for the lack of the Nautilus, as, I stood in line for the Haunted Mansion, got all the way to the door, and high tailed it back out of there, those sounds scared the shite outta me at that age, and I didn't go in there until later on when I was a teen (although my little brother at age 4 went, and loved it, lol, showing me up!).

I grew up in Southern California and had been to Disneyland maybe once a year on average, so, a lot. I got to ride this once! I've only been to Disneyland once in my life and was lucky enough to be able to convince my folks to go on this ride twice while there. I thank all the gawds that I was able to do that because they removed the ride the very next year.
Ryan Trumble, Harry Sofokleous, Jamie Holding, Joseph Stella, Spencer Skoglund, Preston Altree, John Capozza and Kevin Perjurer, you guys are dope. Amazing Job.
I was so scared of this ride as a kid because I thought we were actually really deep underwater and I was worried about what would happen if we sank... I insisted on sitting near the exit. Thanks for offering me a chance to face my childhood fear!
Rode this one time back in the late 1980’s. This perfectly captures this rides campiness yet haunting visuals and audio. This is a wonderful use of VR tech and i really am looking forward to more of these. I hope they stick with the project.
I'm not going to lie, 4 years ago when I started watching this channel I always remembered the outro of where you were going to put something in the park and always dismissed it as just reminiscence. The actual realization of this project is simply amazing! I truly hope that you are able to make some truly beautiful exhibits and look forward to seeing them!
For years now, since the 2000s, I've always wanted to go inside of another dimension (outside of earth) to experience something like this, or time traveling. I know it may never happen in the 21st century, so I would be jealous if the 22nd century and beyond has the capability to do what I've always wanted to see in entertainment. This is close, but not as close as actually being there yourself, without using a VR headset that is.
the ominous ride music really does make this feel like something long gone and long forgotten, resurrected in an intangible form like a ghost, sharing its secrets with the world once again after so long
I’ll never forget going to Disney World in 1995 after having gone once before in 93 and having rode my absolute favorite ride in the world. I was devastated that it was closed down. I can’t believe your team put this together. It’s absolutely incredible. I know you know how much this ride means to people.
Being a 2000’s kid, being on this ride in real life would be my dreams come true. This recreation is everything I’d hoped for and more! Thank you to the entire team who worked on this; you all did amazing! I can’t wait to experience more blasts to the past!
Defunctland is a perfect example of how creative and ambitious people can be if they have access to resources. Truly one of the most amazing technical and artistic endeavors I’ve ever seen.
What an amazing idea, man. This is a whole new world. Seriously. Edit- I rode this attraction twice in my childhood in the mid- and late-80's. I just fkng cried. For minutes. For ten minutes, I was with my full family, again. Thank you. Truly.
Same. I'm an 80s kid. My parents liked taking us kids to Disneyland every few years when tickets would go on sale for $25 each. I distinctly remember riding this a few times. At the time, I liked it a bit. I considered it rather boring. But I definitely appreciate it as an adult. If something brings back fond memories, then somewhere deep down, it was enjoyable to use back then. :) The parts I remember the most were the submerging and reemerging, because I loved watching the frantic bubbles. And just now I got a little sad, because I vaguely remember sitting on my dad's lap on this ride when there weren't enough seats for all the guests. My dad died from ALS in '95, so any memory about him is rare and cherished. ❤️
My grandfather was a judge (I guess for the design/build firm in Orlando he worked for) for this ride. I was also "born at Disney" the year it opened and my aunt worked there, so yes I got to go on this ride a lot. This is my childhood. Thank you for bringing it back. Disney seems bent on destroying itself and all the kids that loved it.
I cried when I saw the old sorcerer's hat. I saw it in person when I was young, and it looked very good in this VR. I may not have had the opportunity to see the 20,000 leagues dark ride in person, but my father did, and he said it was practically the same. This is fantastic work, and I will look forward to seeing much more in the future! Thank you Defunctland Team!
I served with Captain Nemo from 1991 to 2005 and I know the ride like the Back of hand. This is 100% accurate. The memories of serving on the Nautilus are some of the best I have.
This was seriously magical, I got so immersed in the ride I almost forgot it was animated. Big thank you to the volunteer team, y’all are preserving history.
Following the Jim Henson documentary series, I did not think this channel could get any better. I have been proven wrong every single time since then. From the grand scale of the 1964 World's Fair, Coney Island, and Walt's City of Tomorrow, to the smaller yet still important Electric Park, Beverly Park Kiddieland, and even Toys R Us Times Square, this channel has not once failed to keep me attention on whatever the subject matter might be. But this. This is in its own league. I have never stepped foot inside of a Disney park before, but I could not wipe the dumb smile off of face seeing at what has been created here. This is nothing short of magical. I applaud you, Mr. Perjurer, for all of the remarkable work that you and the people that you are surrounded by are able to create. You really are, one incredible storyteller.
Honestly man, the topics you cover and the way you cover them seriously creates its own special magic. This is a really cool concept and your team executed it extremely well
Yeah I went to Kings Dominion several times being to scared to ride it.. when I finally did ride it, it was easily my favorite ride in the park. Them years later I went back to ride it again all excited and the think had become rough and painful, it was obvious they had just like the ride slowly wear down, sad as it was amazing when it was newer.
Years ago when I first found this channel and you mentioned in old videos how this was always your plan for defunctland, to make it a VR experience, I remember thinking “yeah, like that’s ever gonna happen” but oh my god it’s REAL! Congratulations, this is truly a spectacle and a dream come true.
To the entire creative team behind this... THANK YOU. Your work was stellar and I highly enjoyed this plunge 20,000 leagues under the sea. PS - Did Disney really have topless mermaids on this ride!?
I also thought the same thing, in researching videos and photos it was very hard to tell with a lack of quality but I didn’t see any form of media with a top 😅
I wasn't even born yet by the time this ride was removed. Thank you for bringing it back so that I could experience it. Kinda sad I didn't get the chance to ride it, this would have easily been one of my all time favorites as a child.
Chills. Literal chills. Thank you so much for this. I laughed, I cried, I loved it all, it practically smelled like it. The only thing missing was that refreshing AC. 10/10, will ride again.
All I want to say to you, is thank you. I literally cried half way through the ride. I wasn't even near alive when it was around. But knowing amazing rides like these will be ride-able once again just makes me terribly happy. Thank you, Defunctland. Thank you.
What an absolutely fascinating reaction. Most people cry from nostalgia when they reminisce about things they experienced as a kid. But you weren't even alive when this ride was around. Yet you still shed tears. I'm incredibly intrigued. :) You must have a deep sense of empathy. Or at least I hope you do.
@@MidnightSonnet I have been told I have a deep sense of empathy, and it is something that I continue every day to try and achieve. I grew up with the disney parks, and I have always loved them. Many of the rides that I grew up with have come and gone, and I always wanted to know that one day I would again experience them. So maybe in a way it is a little selfish as well. But I couldn't imagine having been around when rides like these were what you grew up with and now they are no more than just a distant memory. Disney has always been my escape when i was younger, as it is one of the few places that was ever able to make me feel truly normal during my years fighting with medical issues. So I will always miss the emotions that come with these rides, as well as the people I met while enjoying them. I hope you have a great day Midnight Sonnet, and that you are able to enjoy these videos just as much. Stay safe now.
@@SuperSneakySakura good. Please continue to nurture that empathy. It's desperately needed in the world. Eh, I don't hold too much nostalgia for rides I used to ride, but are no longer around. I used to feel that way when I was younger, but I'm learning to let things go and move on. No sense in dwelling about things I can't control. Memories are good enough for me. Plus, Disneyland has kept most of the rides I love. :P Us empaths tend to be the ones who suffer the most, emotionally. It's our highly sensitive nature. Be sure to seek help when you need it and don't allow yourself to dwell. Trust me, it'll only make things worse. Thank you for the well wishes. I wish you the same.
The 2 times I got to Disney as a kid - 20,000 Leagues was always down. Went back a few years ago, and it had been changed out for Nemo or something... but it was gone. Thank you for fulfilling something I didn't realize I had wanted to see. Very amazing work, team.
Some people boarded a hype train for an 8 year ride to Cyberpunk 2077. I boarded the train to Defunctland. And I have never been more hyped. Great work, guys.
I think a lot of your American audience like myself really needed something like this today. Even in bleak days, Kevin comes through and reminds us of the hope, imagination, and wonder that is still out there
I remember as a kid in the early 90's, probably in the 93-94 timeline, being super excited about this ride. It was the coolest looking ride at the park and I was around 5 years old. We got to 20,000 leagues and it was closed!
My son got a name brand VR headset for Christmas. Now that he's asleep this is the first thing I used it for. I loved the video when it came out. Tonight I laughed out of pure happiness when getting on the ride using VR. It is truly amazing. It felt so much like returning to something I thought was lost to fading memories. Thank you so much to everyone that worked on it!
I legit cried. This was the one ride that I was really looking forward to and wanted to go on during our only family trip to Disney but it had closed and was being disassembled during our visit. Now I finally got to experience it. Thank you. Thank you so much.
I remember going to the park with my family when I was very little and I so *desperately* wanted to ride this, but it was broken down both times we visited. :( That being said, it's quite nice that this exists! Since you can't do the real thing anymore, this is certainly the next best option!
this is incredible kevin!!! as soon as i watched ur 20k leagues video i wanted something like this to exist and now here it is!!! this is so well made thank you!!
What a delight. I can't overstate how thrilled I am to be able to enjoy this experience again some thirty years later. It's incredibly gratifying that this sort of cultural preservation is finally possible. Thank you all for you efforts!
Fun Fact: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is a reference to the horizontal distance traveled, not the vertical distance traveled. The earth is not large enough for you to go 20,000 leagues underwater. By about 19,998 leagues.
You have really outdone yourself. Even though I have never seen the attraction in real life, I still enjoyed what you brought to life. I can't wait for more.
Man, I never got a sense of scale of how big that sea dragon was supposed to be before, but just tilting my phone screen around in cardboard mode, it's bigger than I thought it was
I AM OBSESSED. I cant really go on ammusment parks anymore til my health issues r resolves so watching this made me so happy. Even if I couldn't ride this irl anyways. Just being able to see inside the ride really was a new experience & one tht im 100% living for!
My sister introduced me to this channel at the beginning of when this channel was created, back when Kevin had these plans on blueprints. I can't believe it's three years later since his very first video, and Defunctland is finally here. Congratulations, Kevin! You deserved this :)
Ok does anyone else remember the “ride through” of the original version of the Little Mermaid Ride on the Little Mermaid Bonus Features? Or the virtual recreation of the Sleeping Beauty Castle Walkthrough on the Sleeping Beauty Bonus Features? This feels just like those, I can just imagine this as a bonus feature on the 20000 Leagues Under the Sea DVD. Thank you for that extra bit of nostalgia!

I've only been to Disneyland once in my life and was lucky enough to be able to convince my folks to go on this ride twice while there. I thank all the gawds that I was able to do that because they removed the ride the very next year.
Same here closed it a few months before I went.
I CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH FOR THIS. So many happy memories with my dad, and this made me cry happy tears. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I can finally live my dream of riding on a dark ride with a beer, bless you
Ryan Trumble, Harry Sofokleous, Jamie Holding, Joseph Stella, Spencer Skoglund, Preston Altree, John Capozza and Kevin Perjurer, you guys are dope. Amazing Job.
I was so scared of this ride as a kid because I thought we were actually really deep underwater and I was worried about what would happen if we sank... I insisted on sitting near the exit. Thanks for offering me a chance to face my childhood fear!
Don't worry. If you had sank in 20 or so feet of water you still would have had a good chance of dying.
@@nitehawk86 uhh thanks lol
Or re-live the fear, lol

Rode this one time back in the late 1980’s. This perfectly captures this rides campiness yet haunting visuals and audio.
This is a wonderful use of VR tech and i really am looking forward to more of these. I hope they stick with the project.
I'm not going to lie, 4 years ago when I started watching this channel I always remembered the outro of where you were going to put something in the park and always dismissed it as just reminiscence. The actual realization of this project is simply amazing! I truly hope that you are able to make some truly beautiful exhibits and look forward to seeing them!
why did i get this strange eerie feeling that we just enterted a new era of youtube content.
Yes
For years now, since the 2000s, I've always wanted to go inside of another dimension (outside of earth) to experience something like this, or time traveling. I know it may never happen in the 21st century, so I would be jealous if the 22nd century and beyond has the capability to do what I've always wanted to see in entertainment. This is close, but not as close as actually being there yourself, without using a VR headset that is.
I feel the same way. Its eerie...
I certainly hope so.
This took a lot of hard work, and skill. So I don't know that it'll be catching on in youtube, lol
the ominous ride music really does make this feel like something long gone and long forgotten, resurrected in an intangible form like a ghost, sharing its secrets with the world once again after so long
I’ll never afford Disney and wouldn’t have been allowed on the ride medically. Thank you for giving me a bit of the adventure.
Try watching some Disney 360 vr videos
I’ll never forget going to Disney World in 1995 after having gone once before in 93 and having rode my absolute favorite ride in the world. I was devastated that it was closed down. I can’t believe your team put this together. It’s absolutely incredible. I know you know how much this ride means to people.
Being a 2000’s kid, being on this ride in real life would be my dreams come true. This recreation is everything I’d hoped for and more! Thank you to the entire team who worked on this; you all did amazing! I can’t wait to experience more blasts to the past!
didnt the ride lose in 94?
as someone who loves history, it makes me so happy that some have the ability and will to restore these experiences, keep it going Kevin, you madman
Thank you. Truly.
I felt it, too - my memories came rushing back, and I got a strong urge to call my parents haha.
I’m just glad I can experience the stuff my parents are probably nostalgic for
I’ve never been able to afford a trip to Disney, I’m in tears watching this. Thank you so much to everyone who made it possible.
This may be the single greatest thing I’ve ever experienced on the internet. So excited for what’s to come!
Yup
Nice to see a LEGO and Disney fan
well he did say something about working on Superstar Limo
Oh hi didn’t expect to see you here.

What I'm going to look forward to is Extra-terrorestrial! I had been on that old dark ride, and I remember it fondly, even though I was 7.
2021 is going to be a great year now. Thank you Kevin and everyone who took part in making it happen.
That was awesome, it definitely was top-notch.
Last time I heard that narrative was in the 80's sitting next to my dad, god rest his soul. Brought back some memories indeed!
In VR you can poke your head outside too lol..
This is a really cool concept and your team executed it extremely well
This is amazing, if you ever do "ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter" ima freak out so hard.
Right?! Thats one of the rides I'm upset I didn't get to stupidly experience knowing full well im gonna leave it wheezing from panic 😂😂🤣
There is a video on here about that..not sure if it's like this one though. I loved that ride when I was a little kid, really scared me!
@@jt8162 yeah. And it’s Kevin’s first video.
That ride gave me laryngitis as an eight year old
Yeah I went to Kings Dominion several times being to scared to ride it.. when I finally did ride it, it was easily my favorite ride in the park.
Wow, this is incredible.
To the entire creative team behind this... THANK YOU. Your work was stellar and I highly enjoyed this plunge 20,000 leagues under the sea. PS - Did Disney really have topless mermaids on this ride!?
It was a more innocent time... lol
I also thought the same thing, in researching videos and photos it was very hard to tell with a lack of quality but I didn’t see any form of media with a top 😅
Back in the days when pirates were allowed to chase womens.
The DefunctVR team has absolutely outdone themselves. Wow. Seriously give yourselves a round of applause, your hard work is appreciated. 💗
So much fun being able to experience for the first time, an attraction I never got to experience in the parks.
The fact that no one else is on the ride and it’s night makes it so eerie... I love it
All I want to say to you, is thank you.
Us empaths tend to be the ones who suffer the most, emotionally.
This is a memory I've told my wife and daughter about. Glad they can see it now.
Oh my god, the memories hit me. Even though I went on this over 26 years ago, I immediately remembered those round fold-up seats when I saw them!
I legit cried. This was the one ride that I was really looking forward to and wanted to go on during our only family trip to Disney but it had closed and was being disassembled during our visit. Now I finally got to experience it. Thank you. Thank you so much.
I went on this ride in the 80's with my grandfather and thought it was the coolest thing ever. Thanks for keeping that memory alive.
I think what you're doing is incredibly important! Thank you for preserving these treasured experiences!
I remember going to the park with my family when I was very little and I so *desperately* wanted to ride this, but it was broken down both times we visited. :(
That being said, it's quite nice that this exists!

I believe that's the goal.. at least with rides that no longer exist.

Could he do the same with Disney World ?
Fun Fact: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is a reference to the horizontal distance traveled, not the vertical distance traveled. The earth is not large enough for you to go 20,000 leagues underwater. By about 19,998 leagues.
🤯
As a kid watching the movie adaptation on Disney Channel, I had thought it was the vertical distance!
Yeah I mean grammatically it’s easy to assume you are going 20,000 leagues UNDER not THROUGH the sea
I was embarrassed about being confused by this when giving a fifth-grade book report.
This wasn’t fun. This made me feel dumb. I feel dumb now.
20,000 Leagues Across the Sea.

In all seriousness though, this looks incredible!
Even though I never got to experience this ride while it was around, or visit either Disney park for that matter, this still made me tear up without having any nostalgic connection to the ride! The amount of work and care that went into this was amazing, and I hope you guys are able to resurrect more rides myself and other people would otherwise never get to see.
