i loved this ride. i wished my daughters had the chance to experience it. they got this ride in tokyo but its not the same submarine or does it go under water. i just wished that disney would stop taking the classic rides out of their parks anf just expand and add not take away. damn!
QUEEN BEE i agree! i cant believe that they really changed the tower of terror and space mountain too! i get they’re trying to attract the new generations but it would be nice if they could keep the amazing legacy going on for years to come.
4 years old in '81 when first rode this ride...I thought it was all real. Scared the crap out of me at the end. At least I was able to ride it again years later as a teenager. Very sad it's gone now.
It's a shame really. Now with fast pass and fast pass+ ( not sure what the difference between the two are) a guest could get a time to ride and then not have a three hour wait time. It's Florida so I can't believe that this ride was impossible to operate. It never freezes over and the water is very temperate. They have glass bottom boat tours in Silver Springs. 20,000 Leagues was just a fancy version of a glass bottom boat ride as it was always on the surface and people walked down a few steps and sat down. It was Disney Magic at its best.
This ride was a Masterpiece of craftsmanship and awe of a ride that is sad that my daughter will never experience like I did as a child. Loved the atmospheric music and narrative!
1) pause this video at 00:00 and mute it 2) open youtube on another tab and find the 1 hour version of 'Welcome to Kitty City' 3) play the audio over this video and it gives it a completely different vibe ;)
Was one of the best rides ever. A Walt Disney creation destroyed by the New Corporate Disney. That's why you now have to "Remember The Magic". River Country suffered the same fate.
+NCGraceCharms No, until the Day it closed it was a very popular attraction. As a matter of fact the resort television channel urged guests to arrive at River Country early because that attraction "filled up fast" Disney even lied when they closed River Country. The signs they placed at the Attraction plainly stated that it was closed "for refurbishment".
+456swagger It didn't close because of "New Corporate Disney," it closed because the equipment was built in the 70s and was starting to fall apart 20 years later. They had to drain the entire attraction several times a year to clean it and even then, it was very expensive and difficult to maintain.
+Zarggg Wrong Zargg. It wasn't falling apart. That was the lie told to the WD execs to try to close down the ride. They even poured a 5 gallon bucket of water into the sub that was being inspected to make the ride appear to be leaky and unsafe.. What about the similar attraction in Disney Land? Mum, I guess your opinion just doesn't hold water. Oh well "Remember the magic"!
This video was spectacular. I loved everything about it. The effects, the narration, punctuated by the organ in the background. The awe-inspiring Jules Verne attraction really captures the imagination. Wish I went on this as a kid before it closed. I'm a huge fan of oldschool practical effects so I'm biased, but they're more believable to me vs screens and 3D glasses.
I was 6 or 7 when I went on this ride. I barely remember it, but I do remember some scenes. I saw the movie and remember thinking “I know what happened to the nautilus and wondered if they raised the wreck for this ride” lol
it's such a vague memory for me - we moved to Orlando in 1988 when I was three years old, so I definitely rode it a few times, but I remember in its last days, it was CONSTANTLY closed for technical difficulties, then one day it was gone :(
Almost seems like an underwater version of the Haunted Mansion (which is great)! I can’t believe WDW never brought it back, considering Disneyland has a submarine ride and even LEGOland has a submarine type ride.
I'll be going back down to Disney in a few years, and this ride will not be there :'( As a kid, we drove down to FL from PA to visit my mom's family. We went about every year and I loved riding 20,000 Leagues. It's a shame it's gone. At least I got to ride it as a kid and can actually say I've been on the ride. Kids today will never know what it was like in person... Sad, very sad. Classic rides... GONE!! (i.e. Snow White). You wold think with ALL that land in FL, they could have saved these classic rides!!
You just took me back almost 40 years in time. I had vague memories of an octopus around a vessel, and remember I loved it. Now I know why :) Simple, timeless!
I rode this when I was very young. I barely remember it except for bits and pieces. This video is like a literal blast to my memory. It still makes me sad that this ride is gone. It was incredible. Sigh, sadness.
I stood in line for 2 hours and 10 minutes for this on Thursday of WDW's Opening Week --- and the ride more than made up for the time spent in line! I was an enthralled 8-year-old boy. 😊
Thanks for uploading this! I never got to ride this as a kid because the line was always too long. Awesome to finally see what it was like. Great ride!
Corporate greed. This ride took extensive maintenance and expensive upkeep. The new simulation 3D rides require almost no attention and extremely low maintenance. It's really sad.
That and it took absolutely forever to get on it because of its relatively low capacity. I remember loving this ride as a kid, but so did everyone else. You'd have to stand in line for two hours or more to ride it.
Well you all do realize there's plenty of sea outside there that needs more attention than these rides.Certainly Walt made this ride, so we can have more care abouy preserving those sea creatures and its beauty.
Disneyland, the Anaheim park, had 20,000 Leagues in the early 1960s, which was the only time we ever got down to LA for a visit. At this point in my life, I don't recall much about it specifically except for the "bubbles," Atlantis, and the cross-eyed sea serpent. Most of the original park was still in place.
Finally got to check it out as it, spiked my curiosity 25 years ago when I was 5; dont think I ever rode it but Mom said it was a good ride(broken down)
My buddy worked at Epcot and we went to MK and rode it in 1993 or maybe 1994.. anywho the sub started taking on water and the only thing they could do is keep moving forward. When we finally got to dock, water was over my ankles. Also rode as a kid the 70s.. anyone remember "E as in Elephant" operator yelling over and over.. good times
I was three when I went on this ride. And back then, in 1984 it had a giant squid with a diver in its tentacle. I'll never forget it. I can't find that part anywhere in these videos. This ride made me petrified of the ocean. I still don't like the ocean.
I was there in November for ,thanksgiving holiday, I rode it ,along with hall of presidents,in 1971 , I still got some of the tickets from the Disney World visit.🦅🗽🇺🇸👍🤚🖐🏁🇦🇺🇸🇪🇺🇸
This looks like it was phenomenal for its time, and I'd like to see a modern rendition of it, but DAMN this did not age well! I always thought the static animatronics and corny background music were exaggerations from parody, but good lord... could you imagine being dragged along for 10 minutes of submerged plastic after visiting a modern aquarium?
Did the ride just claim Turtles are the Dinosaurs Decendants? Nice little Ride, but I feel its a bit outdated. I see hobby Artists making much more detailed Work. And maybe I sleept on some Parts, but no Gigantic Squid grande Finale? Feels like a missed oppurtunity. Sounds a bit like im ripping it a new one, but Ride is fine, honestly.
They closed it down years ago to the rides leaking in the lake. They had to keep paying debts to keep it operational. They closed in the middle of the 90's and paved over it to expand Fantasy Land. For more information on the fate of this ride, please visit the Disney Wikipedia, and make sure to include ride in the search.
+Silver Arrow Leaking? Debts? Huh? The ride closed because of park attendance. It has grown exponentially since this ride was built. It no longer had the capacity to keep up with the crowds, so it got the ax. Simple mathematics. Disney completely owns the parks and surrounding land. By owns, I means OWNS. It is incorporated by charter through the FL State Legislature as the Reedy Creek Redevelopment District. They basically make their own rules, and any "debts" would be paid to themselves. The State Legislature has no intention of harassing its golden mouse. The State would go bankrupt without them LOL
+Downlink I think he means that Disney wouldn't be paying someone else to keep it operational. Which isn't true, because somebody has to be paid to make the repairs and buy parts, even if Disney used their own people. Don't know where the part about land ownership came though.
There is a water and waste treatment plant on-site. Any leak would leak right back into their own system. That's the point. The employees are already there and on staff. Engineering handles day to day ride maintenance. What operational cost?
John Jones Still the ride would eventually start showing its age and would need more and more repairs. How much time, energy and money should Disney put into repairing a really old (though popular) ride? Any large amount of water needs to be filtered and cleaned $$$. That means lots of old pipes and filters that would occasionally need to be repaired and sometimes replaced $$$. Plus lighting for the scenes $$$ Plus the electricity needed to move the animatronics (even if they're pneumatics) $$$ And all of that only gets worse with age. So they gutted this ride and replaced with something that didn't need water and was cheaper all around.
Did anyone else ever see the dead Woody Woodpecker on this ride? I rode this ride once in the 80s and to this day I swear I remember clear as day there was a submerged Woody Woodpecker with Xs on his eyes, hands tied behind his back and block of cement on his feet. I knew it was a joke on their cartoon competitors. I've search and searched and never found anything on this. I figured they pulled it quick being as morbid as it was but was definitely a trip seeing. I know I'm not cracking up. Somebody else had to have seen this. Please respond if so. I can finally feel sane again.
