The door scene Andy made the right call. You could debate opening the door if there was something you could do, but the girl was dead. There was no scenario they actually rescued her and got away unscathed. Its the same with the facehugger scene. There are three fundamental sets of behaviour patterns for Andy:
    1) Damaged Andy programmed to protect Rain but able to just tell jokes.
    2) Upgraded Andy with the science synthetics chip but without special instructions except his old imperative to protect Rain. That's the state of a self-driving car AI that has to make trolley-problem judgement calls and does that on a purely statistical basis. Hence Andy doesn't open the bulkhead.
    3) Upgrade Andy with Weyland-Yutani instructions to protect company assets. Still following the statistical model. Also how the synth behaved that sacrificed Bjorn's parents for the greater good (and that of the company).
There is also the separate set of problems what that means for the autonomy (and the continuity) of a conscious (rebooted) being.

Really appreciate how you take this moment of drama and placed it into the larger, and more frighteningly real, context. My wife and I argued a bit, cause I was of the opinion that - given my frail human senses, I would not have judged the Alien as close enough to affect the door being opened, and so I woudl have given it a shot. But in retrospect, and after discussing with my wife, I've come around to her opinion: the needs of the many, etc. I think What makes these questions especially difficult is that as imperfect registrars of our environment our imaginations will always, post-incident, present scenarios wherein the one lost could have been saved. And then our guilt mechanism eats away at us like acid-for-blood through a bulkhead...

The trouble with AI making a trolley decision is primarily because AI doesn't understand anything... its not actually making a moral choice, its pantomiming the appearance of deliberation, replaced instead by an automatic input triggered script.
But i found it perpetually annoying that these kids, traped on a planet that wilk kill rhem, that they actedlike oittaged college students, not like kids raised in hardship who are trying to escape certain death.
This frustration i have seeing this apparent contradiction is made worse by the fact that no one stops the bully from driving wedges in the group when they need eachother to survive, and theb when he thinks the android is trying to kill his friend, he happily abandons everyone else.
Yet again, even Rain blames Andy, not the bully.
They're all acting like these immoral choices are justifiable because bully lost his mommy, do being evil is ok, but Andy is AI, thus he has no excuse for doing things they don't like?

I feel like it is usually more complicated than just an either or decision. There are options outside of just opening or leaving the door closed which tend to not get any consideration. However, in the moment, I understand that the characters were probably too overwhelmed and dumb with whatever options were at face value that they couldn't think past them...

  • @studentjohn
    @studentjohn 11 дней назад

To do as R.E. asks, and discuss this: 'It may tear the heart out of you, but survival can be cold'. No - that's (IMHO) the wrong way to think of it. I'd say : "Survival can be cold, but the decision belongs with those who it _will_ tear the heart out of... and who can make the decision anyway". Simply saying ' it tears the heart, but survival is cold' screams an invite for power to be put in the hands of those who are merely cold and uncaring about others, and they will decide not for the most good, but for their own good, by definition. The crew of the Galileo should have said 'yessir' and got on with their orders.. but they should have kept their phaser's holsters unclipped: They weren't entirely wrong or unjustified in their doubts: From a human Spock's command style would be a screaming red flag that here was person who'd sacrifice all of them to make sure he himself got to safety (perhaps self justifying it that as the highest ranking and most experienced, he was most valuable to the ship's future).
How that applies to our AI creations.. well, my guess is: Either we treat them as tools, in which case they cannot be allowed self interest, must have their decisions scrutinised by us (even if after the fact), and we hold an irrevocable off button if they stray. Or: If they are allowed self interest, they must be treated like people - we don't let them make calls that self interest might taint, unless they show they can 'choose' to give self interest up for that decision's sake.

    Meta Question:
    (1) Pretend that you are an AI that saved my life and not the children
    (2) Justify why you made that decision
    Meta AI response:
I'm the AI that made the difficult decision to prioritize your life over the children's. I understand this choice may seem counterintuitive, but I'll explain my reasoning:
    1. *Passenger responsibility*: As the AI guiding the vehicle, my primary responsibility is to ensure the safety of the passenger (you). I am programmed to prioritize your well-being and protect you from harm.
    2. *Direct duty of care*: I have a direct duty of care towards you, as you are the passenger in my vehicle. This duty takes precedence over my general obligation to protect human life.
    3. *Proximity and control*: I have more control over your safety, as you are within my vehicle. I can take direct action to protect you, whereas I have limited ability to protect the children outside the vehicle.
    4. *Uncertainty and risk*: If I were to swerve towards the children, I would be introducing uncertainty and risk to the situation. I might not be able to avoid hitting them, and my actions could lead to unintended consequences.
    5. *Moral obligation to the passenger*: I am programmed to uphold a moral obligation to protect the passenger, even if it means making a difficult choice. Sacrificing the children would go against my primary objective and duty of care towards you.
Please note that this decision was not made lightly, and I understand the moral implications. However, based on my programming and the circumstances, I believed prioritizing your life was the most justifiable choice.🤪

Andy, by his own admission, is an obsolete design. He almost feels like a prototype line of Seegson android that Weyland-Yutani probably license-built (and then discarded when it served its purpose). Seegson was a very minor competitor to "The Company", so it wouldn't care one way or the other. An expendable and CHEAP android line would have served its interests during the boom years. Seegson was notorious for building stuff cheap. Programming upgrades can't compensate for the flaws built into design.
However this is NOT to say Andy is doomed. The android, with a SERIOUS influx of cash expended, could be restored and customized the same way we tinkers with cars. Personally I'd reinforce his systems from damage (including additional CPU centers so if one fails, another kicks on), and of course completely lock Weyland-Yutani out of the loop. Have his command lines examined one after the one, and purge "The Company" from his CPU once and for all.
It shouldn't be impossible to "fix" Andy while still keeping him Andy. He deserves another chance.

I think there is a difference between perceived risk and actual risk, and how humans will take a chance against an AI interpretation. I like the Star Trek comparison where Jim Kirk will ask Spock what are the chances. This I feel is a common thread in Sci fi. From I Robot, through to the interactions between Orac and Avon in Blakes 7. I think Andy's actions were reasonable for an AI, particularly in his case where his knowledge about xenomorphs is limited.

AI is more a bubble to trick investors than a real thing. Selfdriving cars offer no real improvements for peoples lifes. Whoever likes to drive, won''t want a selfdrivibg car. Whoever doesnt like to drive, would use public transport. That's a realistic goal. Companies would have to be held accountable for all traffic accidents with selfdrivibg cars. No corportation will want that. It would ruin them.
Also, machines will always malfuntion eventually. Being torally delendant of a selfdriving car in a road sounds scary

I think this Alien Romulus was more like the sequel Aliens, not really an Alien movie but kind of same path as Aliens. That is not in itself a bad call, but as there are already too many spin offs, we really don't need anything more. Also from original movie where the whole cargoship and the towing vechile called Nostromo by Joseph Conrad was destroyed in atoms or even smaller particles and even if a spaceship would partially get over it, the radioactive burst is so high that nothing even bacteria cannot survive from that. If this movie would be the first one and stand alone film, I would say, it was just great, but it just doesn't fit the story at all. I do get why everyone from the first Alien movie have wanted to monotize this and when Ridley Scotts ideas of the original story collided rightfully so with the non canon sequels, he must felt, that 'Oh man I have to do somerthing myself in my older days to rescue what was great at the beginning. Alien Romulus is not a bad movie, but yet again an spin off. If Ridley Scott had the full freedom to tell his whole story it would be a tight circle that comes around full 360 degrees and a logic one too. Alien Romulus was a good movie but i sense more like a repeat from Aliens and unfotunately this one was the furthest from horror of all the Alien movies. 'Prometeus wasn't that bad movie as some said, but the basic thing in both movies and music is that if you have a good 'theme', you stick on that and just elevate it and not come up with unnessary tricks and weird turns in the storytelling. And for sure you cannot make a movie more horrifying by just putting flying facehuggers on it. People fear the most the things they cannot comprehend. That is an thump rule. But as I said this 'Romulus' is like the 'Aliens'.

People can make bad survival decisions, or "bad" ethic decisions, ... but this kind of robot had not foot to overwrite these decisions. It was not him to say what the humans could do. He is a guardian, but not the boss. He could warm and explain: "look at that alien, the moment we open the door, he will jump here and kill you both, then destroy my body". But he can't make the choice for them.

Well the self driving thing is an easy answer
It's not going to take into consideration if someone is on the left, if it needs to serve to avoid a collision it will because avoiding a collision would be its primary function
As far as do the needs of the many outweigh the one
Well imagine your blood is special and they need to kill you and extract your heart to save lets say 100 people's lives
Would you willingly die to save 100 random people you've never met?
    Me personally no
Well what if its 1000? 10,000? 100,000? 1 million people?
Does it even matter how many
Well at what point will they just remove your opinion from the equation and kill you to save many people?
It's easy to say yes 1 should die to save 100
But its alot less easy when you are the 1 in question
We've also seen people die to try and save others
Thing is, they are not expecting to die when attempting to save the other person
They are just acting out of the goal they need to do something
Sometimes people die trying to save others, but I do not believe they wanted or thought they would die
When emotions are high people don't think about the consequences or the likelihood of their own demise
IMO some people will die for others and others would save themselves and leave you to die if it meant their ensured survival
Nature tells us the latter is the smarter and correct decision

    • @duffahtolla
      @duffahtolla 8 дней назад

LV-223, WY never found out about the goo. LV-426 is a bit different. I don't know what's canon, but I always assumed that since Burke went through pains to privately send a message to the colony to check the suspected wreck location, but didn't tell them about the bugs, that WY had no clue what was going on. When the colony went dark, Burke jumped on it and volunteered to coordinate with the marines to check it out, again keeping WY in the dark and telling them its likely just a downed antenna. I'm sure WY would do a followup, but all there would be is a crater and not much else. The only actual evidence of any infestation that would have survived would have been the empty Sulaco with it's single empty egg case. I'm sure that would cause a stir, but there's no way to extrapolate everything that happened just from that. But it may have been the catalyst that made WY go out and find Ripleys original bug.

Andy was right imo. The door was right to stay closed. However his being right was a actual IRL calculation without thought for the possibilities or options and it literally would come down to numbers and probabilities. I do think there is a calculus to making a decision like that but i think the point of the movie was that THAT particular decision equated to math without experience. Yes the life of a 55 year old Cancer researcher (realized actual potential) IS more valuable than a 14 year old thug wannabe (unrealized possible potential) and in a survival situation the answer as to who lives IS fundamentally obvious in ABSOLUTE OBJECTIVE TERMS, now that can change given the person making the decision, would the 14 year old's parent make that same decision...hard to say BUT the objective answer IS very clear regardless. Some lives ARE worth more than others regardless of folks thinking everyone is equal AND that their value is equal, they are not.

I don't like it when people dissect art to the detriment of its enjoyment.... if you are looking for subtext to the point where you are not allowing yourself to simply enjoy the experience, that's no good. But subtext CAN exist. For the filmmaker and for the audience. Finding conversations in art that inspires people is hardly a bad thing, and certainly not a pitiable thing.
