Both hybrid and black goo are great ideas that expand the universe. I don't think that "not being original" is problem, because after many years of failed movies we needed soft reboot. I'm watching this, I see the sets, miniatures, puppets, costumes, wires, slime and smoke and I think "Wow, that's so impressive, takes real craft and hard work. I wonder if all this costs a lot, maybe doing it with CG would be cheaper?" Then I remember that the budget is $80 mil. Not peanuts, but way less than you'd think, way less than major studios spend on their blockbuster actions filled with CG.
Because this movie looks incredible. Like, watch, we can have incredible visuals on a small-ish budget. We can have it so good, just let people who know what they're doing do their thing.

the practical effects definitely came in clutch for this movie. there were some plot things i didn't like so much, but were a lot easier to accept and take seriously thanks to the practical effects, cinematography, lighting, set design, and compelling characters. i definitely feel like without them i could've written this movie off as more of a cash grab nostalgia bait movie than an legitimate attempt to bring back the vibe and feel of the earlier movies. i bet if you were to put some film grain over Romulus, it'd be hard to distinguish it from being made in the 80s.
Edit: I also wanted to mention that David Jonsson was my favorite of the cast, he did a phenomenal job of playing Andy, and was probably my favorite part of the movie. He really helped to immerse me into the world with just how well he played a slightly damaged/outdated android, and how quickly he could change to the more cold, calculating Rook-influenced Andy. I wish that they had maybe gone somewhere with the android welfare commentary, like I had expected that Andy would have had a chance to express how much he disliked being "taken over" by Rook so to speak, and how it made him go against his own ideals, but that never really happened which I feel made the metaphor of androids as a minority group fall pretty flat, and felt stranger given the context that Andy is black.
Rant Incoming, my apologies it just kinda happened:
Historically in the Alien franchise, androids have been used mostly as representative of the Weyland/-Yutani Corp and are meant to be the unempathetic voice of a company that only cares about the bottom line. But as the movies have gone on and androids given more depth, the ideas start to kind of fight each other. Is this essentially the same as a human being, free to make choices? Or are they all subject to programming that will end the life of a human at the drop of a coin if its for the "greater good?" It just feels strange and mishandled the further they play into it, but then drop the ball.

The film is incredible. It takes the most transcendental elements of the entire Alien lore (leaving out, thank God, the AVP garbage) and takes it to a new level. It's really magnificent what Fede and his team managed to do.

love the refrences to Alien: Isolation too, awesome that the Director enjoyed it too, and I like that he wasn't afraid to use stuff from Prometheus... as much as people give it shit, it still had some neat ideas that would be a shame to waste

At 5:23...That scene with the xenomorph emerging from the wall cocoon was fantastic and brand new cause it's something we have never seen before....any of the other films after the chestburster emerges a crew member or whoever will find its molten skin somewhere and then the alien will be killing left right and center....so seeing it's birth as a full grown xenomorph was so fresh and class looking

Just seen the film. A great addition to the franchise, brimming with new ideas. I particularly enjoyed the return of Ash (even if he's called Rook) and the way different elements of the previous films are used to make a new synthesis. It allows for a great story. Oh, and I loved Cailee Spaeny!

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie - have seen all the films and recently rewatched 1, 2 and 3 (the extended cuts). I think Romulus is a bit too similar to the first one and somehow feels smaller than 2 and 3 (military/ research base/ prison). But overall I enjoyed it

I think that's what they were going for though. It's a new alien for a new audience, they wanted to give that first time viewing experience to a new generation. There are so many people who have never seen the original. They are gonna be as in love with this as we were with the og, it's a beautiful thing honestly.

It did look great. Definitely less artificial compared to other Alien movies. Now it just needs more in terms of story for the next one. The setting for the story was an interesting idea but maybe the movie needed to feel more dynamic so somehow they would have needed to transition to a 2nd 3rd 4th or 5th location. The space station was a good starter location but maybe they needed to get off that station. The main story needs something to give the movie more locations while featuring Aliens, Maybe a war or smuggling ship.
