Also, people (mostly women) who always wear nail polish tend to have yellowing of the nails, too. If they stop wearing nail polish, healthy nails will eventually grow out. But the lack of exposure to oxygen and light to the nails is thought to cause this discoloration. I met a lady who always wore nail polish. And, then, one day she didn't-- and her nails looked horrible. I rarely wore nail polish again, not even clear. Yuck.

You’re pretty good for a 5th year Medical Student. I’m glad you’re knowledgeable in nails diagnosis! Proud of you! Most Drs don’t even have a clue! I wouldn’t mind having you for my Dr!
I was really hoping to hear about the vertical lines/ridges on the nails, I'd heard it was related to anaemia or some other vitamin deficiency but was curious about the real reason! 😊
I just wrote a message here about mine because I have that problem too. It started in my 40s and my doctor told me that it was because of my age, as in old age. She was older than me and I didn't realize that 40 was old. I'm 56 now and I have several splits on every nail. They are splitting into all the way down the line and that's from the tip of my nails to the very bottom. It is so bad that I have to keep them cut as short as I can get them and it's getting to the point that I'm going to have to start wearing bandaids over my fingernails. I wish that I knew what was causing it too. If anyone finds out, please let us know.
I really enjoyed your video. I’m an RN and will pass it on to my nurse friends. Your presentation was energetic, informative and fun! Thank you so much!
You talk with so much enthusiasm, it's so refreshing and captivating :D I'm doing a scientific article about patients with cutaneous melanoma in the hospital near me and now I feel like melanoma is chasing me XD I see it everywhere
Love this type of video. You explain it so well and I think everyone should know this information and they can get it checked out sooner then later when its too late. My nails went weird after getting chemo and radiation for colen cancer. I had an operation 3 years ago and thankfully so far I am cancer free. 2 weeks ago my nails finally looked beautiful. I was thrilled. No thickning of the nais, no lines in the nail. They were stronger and not breaking which was brilliant. This morning I looked at my nails and the lines are starting to come back. I just got my CEA results back today 4,9 which cheered me up no end because 3 months ago it had risen to 6,8 for no apparent reason (the only thing that changed was I got my covid vaccinations). Could this have been an infection that I had and thats why my nails changed or my CEA was higher then normal because of an infection? Sorry hope I explained this ok. Thanks for sharing all yr videos. Really enjoy them and I learn so much xxx
This video was so helpful! We often get told in our OSCEs to comment on nail changes and we all just reel off whatever we can think of, but it's so nice to have a proper understanding of what we're looking at! So thank you! Definitely going to pass this video onto our year group :)
I’ve had them my entire life and was hoping she would mention it. I don’t think it’s anything dangerous but figured it was lack of something. My Mother had them too. Maybe it’s hereditary,
Yes, I have them too. They developed in my late 30's. My dad had them in later life. My thumb has one that can develop into a split that can travel down into the quick of the nailbed. So painful and s l o w to grow out. We really need to find out what this is an indicator of. Doc???
Thank you for this video ❤️ Wow, this was really interesting for me, I was originally a Nail Technician and I learnt about 60% of these during my course then, now I work in pharmacy and I'm probably the most knowledgeable in the whole team in anything relating to nails. Now I learnt even more and I can give even better advice, at least on where to refer the patient. 😊
A big cause of nail deformity such as ingrown, pitting, spoon, is mercury and/or lead toxicity. I’m a foot care nurse so I work with nails all day every day. I always ask about their dental history . 95% people with nail problems got amalgam or had amalgam but those teeth fell off. The other 5 % got own teeth without amalgam, they must got it from their mother….usually their mother got lots of Heath problems and likely got amalgam. Mercury pass from pregnant mother to baby via umbilical cord, not sure by breast milk or not.
I have vertical lines across my whole nail beds. The lines grow with the growth of my nails. I can actually feel the ridges in my nails. Plus my nails have always been soft and would bend down with no problem at all. Thank you, Theresa Akins
My nails are like this as well, not all but about half. I too can feel the ridges across the whole mail bed grown vertically with the nail...She didn't mention this one.
My thumbs have these ridges going down the length of the nail ,I have been told it's a vitamin deficiency ,what type I'm not aware of though ,finger nails all good though .
Thank you so much for this explanation! as a hairdresser, I am frequently asked about different nail conditions. I was educated in superficial cosmetic conditions such as white spots and ridges. As always, I simply refer the client to a physician for answers, but it's nice to know in my profession these are important health signs that should not be covered up. Thank you!
When I was younger, the first thing he did was look at my nails, today it is never mentioned why not, obviously today's doctors are not confident enough to diagnose without the web, let's get back to people knowing their job properly.
From what I have read, vertical ridges are usually not clinically significant. They were trying to say not really abnormal. Somewhere else said you need to eat more shellfish. So....?@@cynthiakeller5954
Congrats on making it to PGY5! I would love to see a video that talks about autoimmune inflammatory diseases like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, etc. and the links between the immune response, inflammation, and cancer. I find it both fascinating (and kind of disturbing) how our immune systems go and prevent potential cancers every day, but the same immune system if it is over-active and causing chronic inflammation can cause cancer.
It's nice to see a doctor paying attention to details as opposed to an md quickly diagnosing and give you a med that you soon find out it doesn't work to give you something else that doesn't work either. But won't do testing to give you proper diagnosis.
Thanks. Driving with patients all day long and being aware of this is nice, because I sit and watch them while talking and could notice sickness that doctors haven't noticed
This was without a doubt, the best and most informative article/video about nail health have ever had the opportunity to view. I want to thank you for doing this video. I’ve been having splinter haemorrhages for a few years now and my doctor just shrugged them off. I was also diagnosed with three pulmonary embolism for which I was treated with blood thinners. I also had blood clots in other parts of my body, I associated all of the blood clots to flying. I’m going to research the condition Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) even more now and have a discussion with my physician about it. I might have to go on aspirin on a daily basis. Thank you so very much!
This was so interesting! It reminded me of my dad's hands. On one of them, his nails are normal. On the other, they are somewhat larger and whiter (and also more sensitive). Have you ever seen this before in patients?
Thank you for making these videos. I think many of us tend to ignore what we think are superficial issues (especially in this covid pandemic) so it's very helpful to know what to look for and how quickly any of the issues need addressing. I love your presentation style and your "chirpy" upbeat tone. :)
Thanks for the wonderful vlog... I thought of visiting my Doctor about my nail white spot...I little bit scared about what I see, but now I have that information...I can sleep so well...God Bless and thanks!
Very interesting video. One thing that never seems to be covered when people talk about nails is something that has happened to me since menopause. I have 2 nails on my right hand that would probably be called spooning, but it isn't. The curvature of the nail flattens out toward the tip of the nail and then the nail does curve downward. If I don't trim, it quite short it will crack on the sides. What is so interesting is that there is another lady in a craft class of 6 women that I attend weekly, who has the exact problem with the same 2 nails, the ring finger and the middle finger. I also have gotten ridges in my nails since menopause. I'm wondering if it has to do with a lack of some vitamin or mineral since as you age you don't absorb nutrients as well as you did when you are younger. This other lady has arthritis, I'm not sure which kind and I have some osteoarthritis and possible fibromyalgia. I wonder if it might be related to that. Just curious and looking for answers to be able to fit it if it is nutritional. I'm glad there are still doctors that look at these outward signs of the body that can tell us so much about what is happening inside.
I had the same problem with the nails on my ring fingers only! It was like the white tips of my nails took a nosedive straight down after the pink part ended. Very strange. It began during the Covid lockdown months, which happened to be a particularly stressful time in my life for other reasons. My thyroid quit during that time. I also have arthritis, degenerative spine issues, asthma, & other medical conditions… My doctor had no idea what could have been causing it. I moved cross-country a year ago, changed to a healthier diet, & lifestyle… and those 2 fingernails are suddenly better now! While I don’t recommend a big move like that, eating better seems to be helping, even if it’s just the fingernails.
I started taking a Vit D3/K2 supplement that has zinc, B6, and magnesium in it. No more nail ridges. Breathing better. Less joint pain. Its by Dr. Berg. Works wonders.
I loved this video. I am a RN who retired after 35 years on the job. I get a lot of questions from people about “what is this” or “I have pain right here. What does it mean?” Keep doing videos, please! I will refer them to watch your videos if you have one that answers their questions 😂🤪
I have nails with a distinctly darker area near the distal end of the nail, similar to the "half and half" nails you've showed here, but I've never had any history of kidney disease and they've been like that as long as I can remember. I've also had beau lines before in two of my toenails, but they were caused by an injury and eventually grew out.

This video was fascinating. I recently noticed that I have what you described as Beau nails. Back in July I was hospitalized for three weeks with a severe electrolyte imbalance . It played havoc on my kidneys, heart and apparently my brain ( memory problems and unsteady gait). Now I’m looking at the ridges in all but two nails. As mentioned it probably stemmed from back in July and I’m now seeing it about a quarter of the way from the nail bed. Thank goodness it’s nothing serious but having RA presents with many odd problems. Your enthusiasm for medicine is very refreshing to see. I m looking forward to seeing many more of your patient friendly videos.

What would cause vertical indentations or ridges in nails? They're nearly imperceptible but you can feel them and/or see them at the correct angle, looking across the nail in fairly bright light.

You’re pretty good for a 5th year Medical Student. I’m glad you’re knowledgeable in nails diagnosis! Proud of you! Most Drs don’t even have a clue! I wouldn’t mind having you for my Dr!
I love how excited she is …. I wish I was that excited about anything!
I was really hoping to hear about the vertical lines/ridges on the nails, I'd heard it was related to anaemia or some other vitamin deficiency but was curious about the real reason! 😊
Me too
I just wrote a message here about mine because I have that problem too.
That's why I came here too. Mine are starting to flatten up and down through the ridges too,
Vertical lines not addressed!!!

As a rheumatology patient, I am so excited to have been along for your journey in medicine☺️
It’s so cool that we have these “10 windows on our health”… aren’t bodies simply incredible?
Been wondering what the black lines on my nails were for years. Very informative, thank you.
Your Enthusiasm is a breath of fresh air. Thank you for who you are. Don't let the bastards grind you down. You are amazing.
My mom has yellow nails that she’s never got checked out! Getting her to see a doctor now!
Maybe instead of pills, try Herbal Medicine. The Doctors are trash.
@@Tinyfurball herbal medicine is still medicine
@@Tinyfurball "herbal medicine" is not medicine. It's quackery.
@@ssansu Actually, Herbal Medicine is, and it is all organic and real. The only one that actually Cures, you fool. 😂
Terrific! Thank you!!!
This young lady is going to make one helluva certified doctor!!! 😊
By July 1st it'll happen (or actually a few days before that I think, since that is the beginning of the new school year)
Love the energy and the genuine curiosity that u show! So grateful that we get to follow your journey on RUclips!
Agree!
What a blessing it would be to get a doc like her 🙏
Loved this…retired RN and always wanted to know nail issues and what it indicates..thank you..bring us more!
I really enjoyed your video. I’m an RN and will pass it on to my nurse friends. Your presentation was energetic, informative and fun! Thank you so much!
You talk with so much enthusiasm, it's so refreshing and captivating :D
I'm doing a scientific article about patients with cutaneous melanoma in the hospital near me and now I feel like melanoma is chasing me XD I see it everywhere
This is the best explanation of fingernail abnormalities I have seen. Thank you. Please more.
Thanks Dianne! I’m working on one for hair abnormalities… stay tuned! 😊
I'm a registered nurse in a Geriatric Setting. This is useful information & I thank you for the video.
This video was so helpful! We often get told in our OSCEs to comment on nail changes and we all just reel off whatever we can think of, but it's so nice to have a proper understanding of what we're looking at! So thank you! Definitely going to pass this video onto our year group :)
I was waiting to hear about vertical ridges in the nails and what that means
Vertical ridges can also be a sign of psoriatic arthritis. Or stress
I’ve had them my entire life and was hoping she would mention it. I don’t think it’s anything dangerous but figured it was lack of something. My Mother had them too. Maybe it’s hereditary,
Me too
Was also waiting for that. I have read some articles it can related to thyroid conditions and autoimmunity, like Hashimoto's
I wish I could find a doctor as knowledgeable and enthusiastic as you m
Clear concise and no repetition all videos should be made this way
A big cause of nail deformity such as ingrown, pitting, spoon, is mercury and/or lead toxicity.
Yes, same with my nails-all are soft and all covered with vertical ridges.
Have you soft nail folks had your thyroid checked? DISCLAIMER: i am not an MD, just a thyroid patient with hard nails for the first time in my life.
I think this symptom is associated with thyroid problems, specifically hypothyroidism due to Hashimoto's.
Ma'am you are a breath of fresh medical air. I love your enthusiasm
I love doctors that gives disclaimers unlike these other I know it all folks.
You delivered so well Dr. thank you
Thank you so much for this explanation! as a hairdresser, I am frequently asked about different nail conditions.
What have you learned about the nail ridges? I have them and she did not address it.
Great idea!
Sooo, now we all check our nails very closely😅🙋🏼♀️ Very informative Siobhan👍🏻👏🏻
Thank you for making these videos. I think many of us tend to ignore what we think are superficial issues (especially in this covid pandemic) so it's very helpful to know what to look for and how quickly any of the issues need addressing. I love your presentation style and your "chirpy" upbeat tone. :)
Congratulations. You will be the best doctor for your patients. Listening is key.
You have me beat by 5 years! My fibromyalgia got a hold of me and I couldn’t take it another day!
While I enjoy following you on your rounds, this is so much more informative.
What a great teacher you are! You will make a wonderful clinician! Thank you for passing on your knowledge!
Thank you so much! I really like the style of this video! Very informative! You are very clear, easy to follow! TY
I still remember when the intro was with “2nd year medical resident of rheumatology” I can’t believe we are on year 5 already. Times flies.
Her second year of rheumatology is now
Your doing amazing and 5th year WOW proud of you
Have always had an interest in medicine; was an EMT years ago but now only teach CPR. I'll be watching all of these videos with great interest! Great job!
Spectacular information. Each time I watch one of your videos, I realize how I wrong I was to not study medicine. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.
I m looking forward to seeing many more of your patient friendly videos.
same here..weird nail stuff going on. mentioned was it ok to take Magnesium to doc & She say take it easy on it as it affects electrolytes ..was taking way to much reckon. God Bless -thanks.
I loved this, it's really helpful in my internal medicine rotation, please do more 🥺
And congratulations on reaching 5th year😁 we've been with you since 3rd
What would cause vertical indentations or ridges in nails? They're nearly imperceptible but you can feel them and/or see them at the correct angle, looking across the nail in fairly bright light.
Yes I want to know also
I started taking a Vit D3/K2 supplement that has zinc, B6, and magnesium in it. No more ridges.

I'm a nail tech and we use Shellac in our salon. I will be showing this video to my boss and coworkers to help our clients in a bit of education and tell them to go see their doctors. Thank you for this informative video.
You are very knowledgeable about each nail diagnosis. You also have a pleasant demeanor. Thank you for sharing.
What does it mean, if anything, when only some of your nails having half moons at the base? Thanks for sharing such important info.
That’s just based on where your cuticles are. You’re fine 😊
I am so excited for you and the rest of your journey
Thanks Megan, me too!
This was really interesting. Thank you.
I love learning about bio-science. And you are a really good teacher!
On top of being clear & informative… your freckles and dimples are adorable
Amazing energy
You can tell she has a good heart
Love the dimples too
