In July 2022 I started with strange looking sores on my scalp that were very painful, itchy, scaly, and would sometimes bleed. In addition, where every sore was my hair would just fall out...I could run my hands through my hair and get handfuls of hair. I went to a Dermatologist who did a punch biopsy and I was diagnosed with Scarring Alopecia secondary to Lichen Planopilaris. My hair will never grow back since the scarring destroys the hair follicle. I am now completely bald and having a lot of fun wearing wigs and saving a lot of money on shampoo & conditioner...hey, you have to find the bright side of things like this, at least in my opinion anyway.

I think i have to figure out the reason for my hair loss on my own. I have gone to multiple specialists and none of them can tell me with certainty what it is. It started when I was in the 6th grade and over time has gotten worse. My hair is very thin and you can see my scalp at the front and sometimes in the back. We did tests for PCOS, thyroid, hormones, and then they always come to the same conclusion…it’s genetic. But no one in my family has this issue. It’s very upsetting because it seems no one wants to figure out the real cause. Usually they default to “try minoxidil” and brush it off, but it’s become incredibly clear I have to do my own research and ask for tests. Thank you, this gives me more issues to consider. I have anemia and have had an anxiety disorder that was just diagnosed. I think those two are part of the reason I’ve always had thinning hair. I will keep investigating though.

Hello! I am a 69 year old lady. I noticed hair loss around Oct.,22..... I also have RA, for over 30 years. I have been on Methotrexate for almost that long. Also, I was on Leuflonimde . Was told it was probably from the Methotrexate..Since stopping, my hair is getting back to normal! Thank goodness my RA is not a problem. No flares. I didn't even know TE was a thing! Bur about 3 months after covid (+ a long ongoing battle with Ling covid) I lost all of my hair! Now after growing my hair for 9 months it is 4 inches long! Thanks for helping me figure out what it was! ❤
Thank you so much for doing a video like this you are truly doing gods work out here. I lost 75% of my hair and it was devastating as a girl and I was so desperate for answers and this video was very helpful and I’m sure it will be for a lot of people who are going through similar situations.
I cannot thank you enough for mentioning post-immunization TE! I had a very strong immune reaction to the C19 vaccine, and three months later my hair was falling out in clumps. I lost over 50% of my hair in 6 weeks and was terrified it was permanent. No doctor I spoke to (then or since) has agreed with my theory that it may have been caused by the shock to my immune system, so I've been concerned that whatever caused my hair loss may return. But this video gave me a huuuuge sigh of relief!
So, Siobhan, if we're in our latter 60s, is hair loss not normal? Granted, I've had a shock about a year and some months ago, but it seems unfair to be undergoing this. I'm talking about an emotional shock: being abandoned by a partner, causing huge changes in my life and expectations.
I was pregnant with twins in 2018, started medical school in 2020, and the global pandemic all caused me to lose massive chunks of hair. Luckily, I'm in a better emotional space and my hair has started filling back in.
I reduced the amount of times I wash my hair per week.. It’s wavy/curly so less oily/frizzy with less washes. Unfortunately now, it’s harder to decipher what’s normal! Thanks for explaining some causes!
Expert hairdressers have told me that hair should be washed only once or twice weekly. More frequent washing removes too much natural oil and disturbs the chemical balance of the hair. The culture of daily hair washing was cultivated by the shampoo manufacturers.
Doctor. She went through many years of higher education and internship and residency. Influencers are generally just high school educated people that act like they know something.
I did a water fast for the month of January 2023, and I started losing my hair in February and it lasted a couple of months. It was so bad that I had to clean out the drain after every shower. It has yet to start to grow back.
What's the name of the gut bacteria that produces biotin? Do you know which antibiotics knock off that particular bacteria? Do you supplement your patients when you prescribe those antibiotics?
I got the bad hair loss after I got the rona in july of 2020. I am good now but it was scary how much was coming out. Then i found a nytimes article and it put me at ease.
I have hypothyroidism and have been on the correct medication for years, as well as taking a multivitamin each day. However, my hair is constantly falling out of my head, and I'm constantly tired. All my blood tests come back normal, no defincies or low levels of anything. I just wish the tiredness would go away.
This is also Hormonal too. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is the androgen that is our main focus here, and pattern baldness is common in males whose blood DHT level are high.
I’m 33 and started having hair loss just on my head. Unfortunately it’s my testosterone that’s killing it. But I fixed in after 6 months of using minoxidil and finasteride that I have to take everyday for the rest of my life or for as long as I want hair. Sucks but it is what it is at least I got my hair back.
My husky was diagnosed as zinc deficient due to hair loss (they had suspected cushings first (my thought was an adrenal or thyroid tumor), but his bloodwork was clean). It turns out he had late stage cancer (they assume liver or stomach) which they were unable to diagnose until it was way too late. I lost him suddenly, a month after the hair loss started. I've also seen hair loss in pets with allergies, stress, mites and even from an ovarian cyst (from working at an animal shelter). I'm just saying it's something to look out for in pets too and to always take it seriously. Animal medicine can be surprisingly similar to human medicine. We often even prescribe the same medications like prednisone.
Wow, what a rich video Dr. Siobhan, this is one that I'll have to watch sometimes and probably take notes! The avidin/biotin affinity was used for cancer therapy in the 90's.
Talking about biotin, so not take it before having blood tests. Most of the immune mediated tests use a biotin mediated reaction. Usually affects test such as ELISA and chemiluminescence immunoassays.
Loved the photos from the Waikato district health board as someone who lived there for 3 years ❤ also thank you for talking about trichotillomania! It can also look like missing eyebrows or eyelashes too which is what my problem is 😅
I have a male pattern hair loss. Went to a dermatologist, had a biopsy done couldn't find what's wrong. Went to an endocrinologist couldn't find what's wrong with me. So I give up and start wearing a wig. I have a vitamin D deficiency so about all the symptoms you mentioned for iron deficiency anemia I already had them due to the vitamin D deficiency. So whenever the symptoms start to bother me I just take some over the counter supplements and it goes away. Later on I start having heavy peroid all the symptoms of iron deficiency are there but when I took the vitamin D it didn't improve like it normally does so I decided to go see my PCP. After some lab work I was anemic. Then they investigate it was my multiple Uterine fibroid that was causing those problems. I had a myomectomy and now my hair is growing back slowly. Personally I think my uterine fibroids were the cause of my hair loss. I was diagnosed with them in my 20 but they were small and didn't bother me. My doctor then told I can remove them but there is a chance that they will grow back so I decided to leave them alone. So Doc what do you think about my hypothesis.
I got my hair cut short recently and noticed a balding patch on the left side of my hair that has thinner white hairs. The rest of my head hair is a bit thicker and nearly black, and it could be alopecia. I never noticed it because I keep the sides of my hair longer and the longer hairs were probably covering it. For years I haven't been able to grow a beard as it comes in patchy and only one side of my moustache would grow, the other side doesn't and only grows sparse, not really visible white hairs. I have had blood tests and done a number of times, including recently and they didn't show any issues. I am going going to contact my doctor and find out about this and see if I can get it sorted out.
Yup, male pattern hairloss and heart problems run in the family. I started losing my hair in college, although some told me it looked thin on top in high school. Then I started HTN meds in my mid 20s. My crown was hairless before 30 and my life was basically over with no hope of ever getting married. Although I didn't die until my mid 40s. They brought me back to life with advanced tech. Now, if only they can bring my hair back, then maybe I'll find a reason for being here.
I’m so sorry you have gone through all this. It is so sad when we genetically inherit things that cannot be fixed. I hope you find a lovely girl someday to marry.
I started going bald in High School. However as i have been loosing weight, doing low carb and on weight loss medication, my hair is coming back in. Its still thin, but my head is filling back in.
I have systemic lupus. I used to have thick hair but in my mid 30s it started thinning. Now that im almost 40yrs old, my hair is sooo thin. Every time i shampoo i have so much hair falling out, i spend half my time in the shower picking the fallen hairs off my body! It is soo aggravating! I dont know if its the lupus itself or the steroids i take that causes it. Im down to a fairly low maintenance dose now so im hoping my hair loss reverses!🤞
I was hoping you would cover the type of hair loss I have. I do have a receding hairline but it’s not that easy…my hair follicles become inflamed all along the hairline and the hair falls out. Nothing the doctors have prescribed has helped and as far as I know they haven’t given it a name.
I have areata alopecia.. but it comes and goes ... i feel like mainly stress in big cause depends upon what kind of you are having... i too have it ... that's why i know when they show the science
so interesting! thanks for the super cool video Siobahn . My mum had super thinning hair that started thinning after menopause, and my nephew's started getting male pattern hair loss in his 20's - so we figured it was my mum's influence , but it's interesting to know that's not true that it comes from the female side - i'm sure they were telling us that as late as my biology classes in university in the early 90s 🙂
I had Beau's lines when I had an Amniotic Fluid Embolism in 2009 when my son was born. I survived and ended up having a hemorrhagic stroke in my frontal lobe as well. I had to learn to walk again. I think I'm doing pretty well considering what happened. My son is completely fine. He's now a cranky 13 year old. 🤣
Could you do a educational video on systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (SJIA) w marophage activation syndrome (MAS) and long term outcomes/treatments please?
When I was 13/14, when I first got my period, my hair mysteriously started coming out in chunks, literal chunks. I had 3 bald patches and some serious thinning. Our internist at the time concluded it was a hormone imbalance, it "should" sort itself out (not prepared to give me BC that young) and... hey ho, it did. In a year I had my hair back, and my periods got regular, I did have painful cramping, bad PMS and quite the heavy period. Only got on BC in my late 20s. If I had known sooner, I would have taken BC much sooner, if given the chance.

Hi Dr. Siobhan, it's good to watch a new video from you! May I suggest some names of brazilian singers and bands, I think you will like to listen to these: ( just copy and paste by RUclips to find some of the songs, if you like ). Roupa Nova / 14 bis / Roberto Carlos / Tom Jobim ( Tom created Bossa Nova, that some called the Brazilian jazz ). I'm going to watch your video now. Have a great weekend! :-)
My hair is thinning so my Dr did the usual tests and my iron was at 66 which I thought was low but she said was fine. My vitamin D was low but my thyroid was normal. I'm a 60 year old woman. I've been supplementing with vitamin D but not noticing much hair regrowth. I wonder if my iron is too low.
Thanx. My mother got alopecia areata 40 years ago. Problem was then they could not treat her with anything cause she was pregnant with her sixth child. And up till today she does not have a hair on her body
I have female pattern hairloss. IT SUCKS!! 😅 I am 27 and you can totally see my scalp showing through. I am preparing to wear wigs at some point. I am not willing to take Regain since you have to take it long term and I already have low blood pressure. I have tried everything else and nothing worked. I am on birth control for the past 13 years and I am really scared to get off of it because it might worsen the hairloss. Also scared to have PCOS or endometriosis. 😮
I’m 40 and have been on and off ferrous sulphate since my 20s. I also had a 3 pint transfusion due to blood lose during childbirth! Later in my Late 30s I was diagnosed with IBD, which resulted in a bit of bleeding which caused me to go on a treatment course of ferrous sulphate, after a recent blood test I was able to drop to a maintenance course again! Change my life. I was particularly interested in the hair loss due to covid. I wonder if you could do a video on parosmia particularly due to covid! I’m 16 months in and doctors don’t really know much about it in the uk.
this was very informative, thank you. would it be possible to do a video on, what dr. to see for what? i find it highly confusing with so many different kinds of specialists
As a retired doctor (I was a specialist) I’ll give you my two cents. You need a primary healthcare provider, be it a family physician or nurse practitioner with training in family medicine. They are generalists and can refer you to the appropriate specialist, if one is needed. In most countries outside the US, specialists will not see patients without a referral unless it’s an emergency.
Is there a way to help a man's hair grow back from male pattern baldness? My boyfriend had a full head of hair in high school and now had a large bald spot on the top/middle of his head and thinning towards the front. Does that mean it's linked to heart disease in every case and should get checked out?
Referencing what you were saying at 9:54 Siobhan. While it is true (according to science at least) that we can't "change" genes in our own genetic code, I just wanted to point out that we do have technology to edit our own human genome. In particular however, I am referring to CRISPER which is a technology that has actually been around for several years now that gives us the ability to edit our own cells to give us certain traits that we would want to have, whether that be greater intelligence, an enhanced metabolism, or even eliminating certain diseases like herpes or HIV. So while we can't "change" our own genes (at least to the extent of my knowledge so take that with a grain of salt) we can edit our genome. But still to you and to anyone who is reading this comment take what I am saying with a grain of salt because I am no expert about gene editing I just wanted to point that out. Not because I want to be mean as I don't, I just wanted to point that out. But because I said that I am no expert about this, here is a video you can watch that does better job at explaining this than me. ruclips.net/video/jAhjPd4uNFY/видео.html
Siobhan said we couldn’t change our genes YET. I am quite sure that Siobhan, a fully certified rheumatologist, is aware of the genetic research you mentioned.
I'm starting to get a receding hairline, but I'm planning to go on steroidal antiandrogens in the next few years, and I figure that'll deal with the hair loss at least as well as finasteride would.
Vitamin d deficiency. This one is not rare. Also helps PCOS, fix 2 problems for the price of one. Not near 30ng/mL though, bump it up to twice as much and help your RA patients problems too. Do you have a video on vitamin d?

I have had Long Covid Since 2020. I lost massive quantities of hair for 8 months. My hair is hip length so the lose left a mess everywhere. In April 2021 I started saving the hair to make Victorian hair rats. They're sausage shaped hand felted roller like accessories, which you wrap your hair around and pin in place. My hair lose has diminished, some has grown back, but I'm still using the hair rats. They match my hair color perfectly of course. Good luck with your hair recovery. 😉👍

@@strugglingcollegestudent I know it should be, lets just say I don't see that doctor any more. I was a teenager at the time and he was convinced I was just looking for attention. Thankfully my mom believed me and forced the issue.
Hi! So good to see a normal video rather than a short. Great video; my spouse has telogen effluvium due to cancer treatment. Thank you!
Yup
By watching your videos it makes me Energetic as a Medical Student ❤️

Try Lugohls iodine, my hair never grew beyond my shoulders, now a year later, over six inches below shoulder length.
This is one of the most informative videos on hair loss. Thank you for sharing.😃❤
I have pcos, on epilim and I’ve had hair loss from covid. I’m just thankful I have very thick curly hair.
We just learned a little bit of this in cosmetology school!
Happy to be helping people
I have systemic lupus.
Learned so much more from this video than from the pcp I've gone to. Thank you!
I was hoping you would cover the type of hair loss I have. I do have a receding hairline but it’s not that easy…my hair follicles become inflamed all along the hairline and the hair falls out. Nothing the doctors have prescribed has helped and as far as I know they haven’t given it a name.
Thanks for this - I lost a ton of hair after a crash diet. Nice to hear this possibility mentioned.
I've got hypothyroidism, PCOS, mhtfr and I've got hsir loss
What an interesting, informative video! Thank you.
I have areata alopecia.. but it comes and goes ... i feel like mainly stress in big cause depends upon what kind of you are having... i too have it ... that's why i know when they show the science
You did not mention testosterone hypersensitivity in young women which is often misdiagnosed and causes terrible hair loss.
I appreciate you, thank you for making content.
My early anti-seizure meds caused enough hair loss I had nightmares about it, I switched over to new meds and the hair loss went away ❤.
What about scarring alopecias like CCCA? What do those say about your health?
Looking forward to the video on brittle hair, as I think some of the hair on the back of my head seems to be becoming brittle
so interesting! thanks for the super cool video Siobahn .
Hey checking your videos after a long time, I enjoy your explanations. Thanks a lot.
Thank you so much for sharing❤
Great information as always! I learn so much from you, thank you!
Can you do a video more in depth on Dermatomyositis
Great idea - thanks!
There is also some evidence relating to poor Methylation pathways
Can opioid use cause hairloss if you take them regularly? I am wondering if this is the reason for my hair loss.
Back in the 70s 2 of my friends with severe period pain and bleeding were given BCP at ages 15, 16. It helped them tremendously.
@@joywebster2678 I was just starting puberty, they weren't about to put me on birth control that soon. At age 13? Nope. I would not have accepted it either, and my mom same.
@Marleen G. I read your story the first post, no need to repeat in comments again.
I love your advice, and it helps to understand our health
Stress was not mentioned once. I hate that diagnosis bc its lazy.
I had blood clots after I had my last son ended up anemic and with low blood count. How can I increase my blood count without getting blood?
What about having alopecia endogenica and aereta both ?fatigue and short of breath?
Thank you so much
I’m 40 and have been on and off ferrous sulphate since my 20s.
I’m 16 months in and doctors don’t really know much about it in the uk.
i wish she could give me an evaluation i really cant figure out the prob.
Gosh my hair is so thin after losing so much after a bad allergic reaction to the COVID vaccine. I’m hoping it will eventually come back fully.
"Fun fact about syphilis"
Never thought I'd hear that lol
😂😂
so surprised and proud to see so many New Zealand references in here! :D
Dr. Siobhan, taking about iron defficiency, I have read recently that Helicobacter pylori can be one cause of iron depletion in people.
I didn't realize that there WAS a "fun fact" about syphilis!
😂😂
this was very informative, thank you. would it be possible to do a video on, what dr. to see for what? i find it highly confusing with so many different kinds of specialists
@@gerardacronin334 i made an app. to see my primary, scheduling 3 months out, in the us
Is there a way to help a man's hair grow back from male pattern baldness?

Siobhan said we couldn’t change our genes YET. I am quite sure that Siobhan, a fully certified rheumatologist, is aware of the genetic research you mentioned.
In my case, I noticed my own initial episode of hair loss after getting back home for the first time from the barber's.
i love your vidoesss keep going
For me the main cause was B12 deficiency
ha, me with a crash diet... a year and a half later, my hair is almost all back
I'm starting to get a receding hairline, but I'm planning to go on steroidal antiandrogens in the next few years, and I figure that'll deal with the hair loss at least as well as finasteride would.
Vitamin d deficiency.
This one is not rare.
Also helps PCOS, fix 2 problems for the price of one.
Not near 30ng/mL though, bump it up to twice as much and help your RA patients problems too.
Do you have a video on vitamin d?
Thanks
Oh Christ, are you finally an MD!? I remember seeing a video where you shout out and ICURN.
An MD, did her residency, and is now a fully-qualified specialist. Been a while since you tuned into her channel?
I have alopecia universalis
GMOed foods causes hair loss and Allulose caused me to lose my hair.
Better diet mostly fully raw vegan now with a bit of beef gelatin n collagen n liver has helped me. And N chia seeds n flax seed.
My son is 26 he’s been losing his hair since he was a teenager took him to doctor said it’s normal but he’s almost bald
i know a guy who had neurosyphilis, he literally lost his mind. syphilis aint a joke.
Yes very true!
Every time I brush my hair, I lose so much much hair so I try not to brush it so much.
I make too much hormones.
Heavy period , anemic . Still haven’t went to doctor yet my stomach lining is upset
One thing at a time . Too many problems. Irr
I'm still losing hair a year after having covid. 😭 I take multivitamins because I thought I might be deficient but it's still happening.
What do we do
