    So bizarre. Sucks because as enthusiasts we sometimes choose to pay the premium and buy a new car for peace of mind over dealing with old cars and their inherent problems. It's a shame given how well the GR86/BRZ is otherwise set up.

      New cars are built with cost cutting in mind and a predetermined obsolescence - so people can go buy a new car sooner.
      Its a shame because unless you buy something really rare/expensive, you get cost cutting and QC issues with something high volume like the FA24

      I'd be waiting for the new 86 with the g16 instead of the boxer if i was after a new car like the brz/86

      @@Mr_jz_12 a turbo 86 has been on the rumor mill since the FRS’s first inception in 2012. The hybrid G16 GR86/BRZ making the rumor rounds now for 2025 is absolutely not going to happen. Not only would it not fit properly in the current chassis, it would cost in excess of current 3.0 Supra pricing. If it ever does hit the market, it’ll be a much more premium segment and a next generation product.
      If folks are waiting out the GR86/BRZ, it’d be more realistic to wait for the eventual mid-cycle update where they hopefully address the RTV and oil pressuring issues. If I had to guess, I’d say the RTV issue gets resolved and the oil pressure issue is left to the aftermarket (since it’s a non-problem on the street).

      @@DoubleOSevan The g16 (non hybrid) has been confirmed, and test mules (even in australia) have been confirmed. It's not a rumor. 🤣

      @@Mr_jz_12 aside from the fact that shifting the GR86’s horizontal boxer 4 to a vertical inline 3 would totally alter the car’s crash safety profile and architecture, Gazoo Racing’s own chief engineer said they have no plans to develop such a car and that the test mules were only for testing synthetic fuels. The rumor isn’t that such test mules exist, it’s that Toyota would make the unrealistic switch and totally drop Subaru’s boxer for a turbo 3-cylinder on an existing platform.
      Not to mention such a car would be much more expensive and totally ruin Toyota’s GR pricing hierarchy. As it stands, the entry level sports car (GR86) builds up to $36k, where the GR Corolla picks up mid way as the hot hatch (36k-45k), and GR Supra closes it off as the mid-tier sports car (45k-64k).
      I’ve been following and writing about cars long enough to know when something doesn’t make sense. As much as I’d want one, a G16 GR86 would cut right into GR Corolla/Supra territory and push a mid-to-high 40k price.

    Wow, that casting flash needs escalated to Toyota. I am sure they would be interested and shocked as well.

      Haha maybe... Toyota of Japan's official stance is that the excess RTV/oil strainer debacle is a "non issue"

      Correct. Unless there is a class action lawsuit (like with the FB engines), dont expect anything to happen from Subaru/Toyota @@P3RV-3

    Good to know that my 2011 Escape with a Mazda (Duratec) 2.5 engine is a pretty reliable car. Only thing that’s on the weaker side is the transmission, but it’s mainly the V6 that has the issue, because they used the same transmission in both applications. As long as you keep the fluid changed, they’ll last a long time.

    Wow the QC is definitely not doing the job correctly. How can you assemble the lower oil pan while seeing this lage piece of casting flash? Nuts....

      Seeing as how it's casting flash, that means it was attached to a casting at one time. That time was probably when it when it was assembled, so it may not have been in the lower pan when it was assembled, then broke off of the casting. Righteous indignation is appropriate, but don't let it stand between yourself and common sense. Yes, qc should have caught it, while it was still attached to the part, and trimmed it off before assembly. Assembly line workers are neither stupid nor malicious, but sometimes they are pressed for time. Toyota should investigate when and where this engine was assembled and inspect engines assembled before and after it. Subaru did something like this a couple of years ago, with an incorrectly installed part. It turned out to affect about 12 cars IIRC.
      Local Toyota dealer seems to have a reliable supply of GR86s, but I think I'll wait a bit before buying one.

      Front timing cover has to come off to replace the oil pick up ie the whole front of the engine.

    Since covid all manufacturers have gone to hell. They literally move faster than things can be inspected and when found are not stopped unless it will not survive the test drive to sell it, they let warranty sort that crap out or a few years later customer pay handles it. Yet these sorry assembly line workers want 6 figure salaries.
