    I was thinking about your thoughts on them sounding like their influences. I eventually came to the conclusion that the listener's perception can influence their judgement. Take Dust to Dust for instance. I've played it for 6 different people, and each one said "Oh this sounds kind of like... then each of them named a different band. In fact, they have seen some of us discussing these songs, and commenting how a song reminds us of a band. They say that half the time, they've never heard of the bands we mention.
    Their music invokes a feeling for me that seems really familiar, from all the music I"ve enjoyed over the years. However, I can never seem to track a sound, or chord progression, or any sequence of music to a particular song. I think they break all of the good stuff down to the elements, then pull it together as something new that feels familiar. That's my take anyway.

    Per interview with the band, The Sacrifice is all internal - the queen is talking back to the voices in her head, never realizing that they are only in her head. Also, as Sinister Smiles is coming up - note that this is a duet between the girl and her bad side, with Dany taking the evil side and Pau the good.

    Again, thanks so much for taking the time to delve into TW's entire album song by song with your reactions. I wanted to write more -- zip it Rick! -- but I ran out of time.
    I started writing this earlier: this is a very interesting song thanks to those various intricate parts you mentioned during the reaction, as well as the dissonant notes that meld so nicely with the more melodic melodies. And then on top of everything else, it is a very difficult series of vocals to sing, as the range that Daniela must cover to pull this one off without cracking or going flat is quite impressive, especially with the energy she's expending rocking and playing.
    To me this is one of the more intriguing songs because it showcases their abilities as songwriters and arrangers, as well as performers, and I don't know of many bands that can harmonize this way and deliver a powerful rock "opera" song that doesn't lose it's harder rock edge in the process.

    Finally... I've been waiting for your review of this song in particular (and the song Queen of the Murder Scene from this same live concert). Yes, listen to it again! No, they are not copying anyone. They do like Muse. And if you listen back to their first album and early songs (like Free Falling) they have grown musically big time. They are the real thing... the future of rock is in good hands with The Warning.

  • @danw1955

    What really gets me about Dany's guitar technique, is she can do something I could never do in all my years of playing... she can do an underlying melody and sing at the same time. Other than standard chords, etc., I could never do that in 40+ years, and that's pretty impressive to me.😁 As far as the overall sound, yes, this *IS* only their second album and they have influences from a lot of other bands that came before them, but they always put their own twist on things, and they will eventually find their own 'niche', so to speak. In the meantime, I've got to constantly remind myself that they're all still teenagers and they perform and play so damn well, it doesn't even matter!!😉 These gals are destined for greatness and already have their foot in the door, so I will support them as long as I can. Great review Paul... I'm glad you're looking at The Warning a little more objectively now. 🤘😍🤘

    • @jbartyparty7398
      @jbartyparty7398 5 лет назад +5

      That's a great point Dan! She really is beyond versatile and she hardly ever misses a note with her singing even when she might be playing something that isn't the main melody.

      I too am bewildered at Dany's ability to play melodies while singing. I have been playing guitar over 40 years as well, and I find as soon as I try to venture off the main Rhythm chords, something suffers. It's usually both the playing and the singing. People are often remarking how Pau can drum and sing at the same. I don't see many guitarists doing what Dany does. Until I saw Dany doing it, I had chalked it up to near impossibility. It's almost always the rhythm guitarist who sings. Dany fills rhythm, lead, and lead vocal at the same time!
      I return to my theory they are from another dimension, merely toning it down so we don't miss the show on account of fainting from amazement.

    Dany, Pau and Ale will evolve and progress with their maturity. Life experiences and musical influences will emerge in future creativity. I feel they will always be driven by the hard rock music that mom and dad exposed them to (I pray). I also think there is a rock opera in their future that will be spoke of on the same level as "Tommy" by The Who!

    I guess for me it sounds different than there first album and way different from there EP of there first 5 songs they ever wrote and composed. From the EP up until now they have jumped leaps and bounds in technicality. The EP as they said was exploring different styles of music and had no direction really so I believe yes, they are still finding there sound and do I think it will change, yes. My favorite bands have adjusted there sound over the years so this is yet to be discovered with them being so young and creative!

  • @Divedown_25
    @Divedown_25 5 лет назад +12

    Paul. Thanks for the reaction. Looking very much forward to hear your next coming 4 reactions as these for me are the top songs on the album together with D2D.
    A very good question you pop here. Have they found their own sound already or will it evolve to something else that will be their sound?
    Their sound will of course evolve like for any band. All of us hear influences from bits and pieces of other great bands, you have already mentioned several of them like Muse, Offspring, System of a Down. I have heard a bit of Rush. But question is if they have noticed it or if it is us who want to notice it. Their second album is a bit different from their first full length album (there is an EP first) but you can very much hear The Warning sound on both albums so I say that their sound is already pretty unique. I say so because I’m listening to web radio playing heavy indie band rock and I hear many of the new bands sounds pretty much like a mix of Linkin Park, Green Day and Limp Bizkit and there are many of them, good bands, good music, but a bit predictable in one way. However if you would drop one of The Warning’s song in the middle of it would be disruptive and different. Cannot explain it better than like if you suddenly drop a Rush song in the today’s Billboard top list, people would notice it.

    A quick note on the axes -- Dany plays the Spearfish in standard tuning and the Manson in drop D. Ale plays the black Spector bass in standard tuning and the white one in C#, D or D# depending on the song.

      Thanks Neal, good to know, and it makes for quick transitions to the next song while someone off-stage can be tuning her previous axe, or replacing a possible broken string or whatever (although I have yet to see Dany actually break a string on stage yet). Pau on the other hand, has to keep plenty of spare drumsticks around, as she goes through them like I go through socks! Her most notable one was at the second TEDx event, where they caught it all on camera! Never missed a beat!😁👍

    Part of the fun, when discovering a new band, especially when they are so young, is taking part in their journey. Its interesting to me to hear people say “TW sound like ‘x’ or ‘y’ “because the x and y never seem to be the same bands. 😂
    Some have been very dubious, because TW doesn’t seem to stake out any particular territory, or sub genre. I can see why that throws some potential fans. For me, I appreciate their ability to morph composition to match the “story telling” aspect of this album.
    Thanks for another honest (and I think great) reaction. I look forward to seeing the next one! You will be starting chapter 3, which as I said before, is my favorite (therefore the best) chapter in this musical novel. 🤘🏻

    • @jbartyparty7398
      @jbartyparty7398 5 лет назад +6

      Well said Roy, I was going to come back and talk about their "genre-less" sound, but I think in one sense, they have found THEIR sound already, and it's really the combination of Pau's hard-driving rhythms with their incredibly powerful vocal work whereby they blend together skillfully varied lead vocal with harmonies, rounds and even "chant" type -- as Paul will soon discover -- polpyhonic choruses that you don't really get much with today's music.
      IOW, you can always count on TW for a more advanced "rhythm" based sound that carries the tune from start to end without having to rely on the most innovative guitar riff or the addition of a keyboard. Now they deliver that too, but what they do on top of these awesome bass lines and low-end foundation is varied and innovative with a variety of tones and melodies to keep you interested as you listen.

I'd bet there isn't another band anywhere around that has written/arranged/recorded 31 original songs already, let alone a batch of songs in which you are not compelled to skip over any when listening to the albums. Yeah, some might say they need to be in the right frame of mind for the ETM stuff, but for their ages and their abilities at the time, most of those songs were ahead of the curve too!

    Wow! Very interesting point. I love that when you're listening your ears are focusing on a different level than most average listeners. I love learning what you have to say because I don't know any of that and it's interesting to me to find out that side of their music. I may get hated on for this next point. The vocals in the studio version of this song are very rich. With this live performance I get the sense that Dany was singing with a tired voice at this point. She was coming up short from bringing the emotion of the studio version. That's not to say she didn't do well. It's just when comparing the two the studio version (naturally) comes out much better - the benefit of retakes and not playing guitar while singing. One last note about the studio version. There's sort of a backing lead guitar happening in it and I just love the sound of it. I think that is one of the elements that lead to my loving this song so much.

    • @holydado
      @holydado 5 лет назад +4

      OG-K I’m pretty sure this is from the first ever performance of the whole album (Queen of the Murder Scene). So it’s possible she’s still getting use to singing it live in front of people and I’m sure she probably didn’t get as much sleep the night before--I sure as heck know I’d never be able to sleep knowing the next day I was playing a new batch songs to people.
      Plus I maybe wrong but in many concerts of The Warning I’d seen before this performance on RUclips they typically played much shorter length shows. I believe this was around when they started playing much longer, I’d imagine that would take sometime for Dany to get use to.
      Just a few thoughts, I could be wrong. I think The Warning have performed all of their songs better as time goes on--I think she sings this song better now, don’t get me wrong I like this performance, but she’s always improving.

    • @jbartyparty7398
      @jbartyparty7398 5 лет назад +5

      I think they were all very much affected by the severe altitude combined with the energy they tried to deliver during this performance. No reason to hate on that comment. It's true. Dany has improved upon this performance by leaps and bounds as they have had time to work out the kinks and Dany has figured out how she wants to sing each one. She's super dialed in now cuz she keeps nailing all of these a capella type TV and radio performances. But yes, Paul will definitely need to download the album so he can re-listen with his head phones to see just how dynamic (and intricate) these songs are in the studio.

    • @johnafagerquist8235
      @johnafagerquist8235 5 лет назад +3

      I also prefer the studio version of this song over this, and perhaps any other, version. That guitar backing riff really adds. Also, the beginning of the pre-chorus, on the album, is a bit less energetic, and a bit more creepy, which, having heard it that way first, I'm stuck on as the "right" way. Not that there's a right way, just a personal preference.
      Any way and all ways, "The Sacrifice" is my favorite song by The Warning.

      In one interview they said that QOTMS was an exhausting album to play all the way through since all of the songs were full-on, with no slow, light songs that allowed them to rest. I watched a video recently of Phil Collins when he sang and drummed (for another discussion on drummers who also sing lead) and the drumming was a slow, light, tap-tap-tap for most of the song. By comparison Pau is beating the drums like they owe her money all of the time. It's a full-on effort. Same for Ale and Dany, and Dany is also striving to show the wrenching emotions of the Queen on top of everything else.

    You know, I've come to realize that many people in TWA have a hard time comparing them to anybody else, or even simply can't. I've listened to all of their albums and EP's many dozens of times each, and I've come to the conclusion that, especially now, they do already have their own sound. If you dive deep into their music compositionally (is that a word, I'll just continue on as if that's word...), of course you can start to piece together their inspirations, but as a whole (to me, at least) they really don't sound like anyone else but themselves.
    With that being said though, funnily enough yesterday I sat down yesterday and wrote like a million pages as to how I think Pink Floyd and The Warning are very similar; but, after like 2 to 3 hours of just writing off the top of my head, comparing every little thing, I realized it just wouldn't be interesting for anybody to read except myself. So, I just asked the community how they thought they sounded similar, and like 90% said they don't hear it at all. And I concluded that obviously their overall sound and tone are completely different, but their ideals are a like in many ways; using stereo sound (in the studio versions of tracks) to encapsulate a certain feeling they want the listener to have, the lyrics themself, the overall production (the small details), etc. But overall, people still thought I was crazy. But especially with QOTMS, I hear similarities. They might be hidden underneath and you might have to dive hard into every song, and dissect them in order to hear 'em, but they're there no doubt. (also, quick note is that I'm known in TWA to be the kid that writes way too much and, you know, tries to sound smart when in reality he kinda really isn't... but case and point is that the longest of the comments I make usually only take like 20-25 minutes at most, so the fact that this analysis I did took 2+ hours, that means I had a lot of stuff... and I can't even compare things very well when it comes to actually playing the instruments, so that just goes to show you that I did end up realizing there were a lot more similarities than even I initially thought)
    But, yeah. With this song, I love it. I love every song they've put out. I couldn't tell you any order I like better than any other song; they're all amazing, even since the EP in 2015. Some songs took a few listen throughs to really interest me, like "Fade Away" from ETM, but even then now that I gave it a fair chance that's my favourite from them as well. Yes, like everyone else here, I've been Warned...

    I like all your reactions, but this one is particularly interesting. If you ask the enthusiastic members of The Warning Army who they hear in terms of influence, you get a lot of different answers. A little behind the scenes fun fact about this particular song: Paulina (drummer and often the initial creative spark) has said K-Pop was a big inspiration behind The Sacrifice. Try as I might, I’ve yet to hear a K-Pop song that sounds remotely like this track. 🙂. Point is, certainly they have influences, but this band is really hard to pin down from song to song. I think that’s due to their process; no matter who starts the songs, they collaborate very heavily in the writing and arrangements. They tinker obsessively to the point that there’s a piece from each of the three sisters in nearly every song by the time we hear them.

    It is true, none of us outgrow our influences. The Warning is certainly giving the college try at a "new" sound which, as you've mentioned, will probably become more distinct as they get older. I can think of a band being lauded these days who didn't even bother with their own sound... or look, or antics, or, etc.. Just sayin'
    Yes, Chapter Three, from what I can tell based on reactions and comments all over, is indeed the "heavy hitter" of the four. But Chapter Four is no slouch. I absolutely love this entire album.
    The Sacrifice is my favorite song by The Warning excepting one. The song I refer to is in Chapter Three and, frankly, is one of those songs that leaves a mark on music history, and so stands in a class by itself. Which song? TWA knows.

    I think part of the luxury of youth, is a naive fearless approach. The girls have zero problem with plucking different aspects of music, from every genre, when they feel it strengthens a song. The result can be pleasantly bewildering. They often zig, when convention tells them to zag. I love every bit of it.
    If you were to critique the album, it would not be harsh, imo, to say that the songs in chapter 2 are “story heavy”. They move the story forward in a complex way lyrically, but the music itself is the weakest of the 4 chapters. I am not saying its bad. It is quite good, just a notch or two below the other chapters imo. 🤘🏻
